The depth and spontaneity of her singing are rooted in a
journey of spirit. She believes that music is a divine gift given to
all creation. Thus it becomes a “sacred mirror capable of
reflecting the Divine and the Soul with its varied expressions in
life.”
Shree Karunamayee began her music study with Pandit Vinay Chandra
Maudgalya in 1943, training in Hindustani classical singing at
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. It was later, after completing her M.A.
degrees in music and philosophy, and while she held prominent
positions as an educator, composer, performer and ‘A’ class
broadcasting artist for All India Radio, that she intensified her search
for music which would give deeper expression to her inner spiritual
experiences. She encountered Pandit Pran Nath in 1953, master vocalist
of Kirana style, who embodied the music she was seeking. With great
fortune, she had the privilege to receive his direct guidance.
Ray Spiegel is a disciple of the late Tabla Master Ustad Alla Rakha
since 1975, specializing in the Punjab Gharana (style) of Tabla playing.
He has performed in the U.S. and India as both accompanist and
soloist, appearing with such well-known musicians and vocalists such
as: Ustad Alla Rakha, Ustad Sultan Khan (Sarangi), Ustad Aashish
Khan (Sarode), Pandit Ragunath Seth (Bansuri flute) and Pandit Barun
Kumar Pal (Hindustani Guitar).
Gordon Korstange began learning flute as a Peace Corps volunteer in
South India and later continued his studies with the renowned T.
Viswanathan. Gordon has played for numerous traditional music and
dance performances and has also been an accompanist for the dancer
Nina Gulati and poet Robert Bly.
