I was born and raised in San Antonio, TX and received my Bachelors Degree from Trinity University with a double major in Economics and Religion. At that point in my life I knew that I was called into ministry, but was sure it was in some form of international justice and mercy mission, and not in the church. God was at least clear about my call to seminary, so I moved to New Jersey to attend Princeton Theological Seminary. Three years later I found myself torn between a passion for international work and a deep love for the local church; so upon graduating I did what any rational 20-something would do, and I packed up and moved to Guatemala. I had already spent extensive time living and traveling internationally, so spending a year serving with a medical project in the highlands of Guatemala felt like a natural choice. During that year I felt God continue to lay the local church on my heart and I returned to serve as an Associate at First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, TX. Since returning to the local church, I have also served at FUMC San Benito, TX, Cedar Creek UMC, Haynie Chapel UMC, and most recently Faith UMC. I am a pretty active person, and have found Austin to be an incredibly life-giving place. In my free time, if I'm not running, biking, or swimming, I'm usually outdoors somewhere with friends or relaxing with my nose in a book. I am so excited to dive into all that is happening at Oak Hill UMC, and to learn more about each of you. The author writes of the search for love and family as thousands of abandoned children were sent west with the hope of being adopted. Our next meeting will be on Thursday morning, June 26, at 10:00 at Panera Bread on William Cannon. A second selection was chosen for our August meeting, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It is a Pulitzer Prize winning tale of a thirteen year old boy who after surviving an accident that kills his mother is taken in by a wealthy family in New York. Vividly drawn characters and a story full of intrigue will hopefully prove fascinating Summer reading. We will not meet in July. Until our June discussion on Thursday morning, June 26, happy reading! KVUE “Five Kids Who Care” Awards Our own Eleanor Hemenway will be one of five kids featured on an upcoming KVUE broadcast set for Tuesday, June 24 at 5 p.m. They will air individual videos about each of the award recipients. Eleanor was among the Five Kids Who Care awardees for her work on the pajama program back in May. Chet Miles reports that the Oak Hill UMM Father’s Day BBQ Fundraiser on June 15 took 10 briskets, 80 leg quarters, 40 lbs sausage, 20 lbs beans and two days of cooking.... and raised $2000.00 to the building fund!!! The Austin FreeStore is closed for the month of June AND we are delighted to be hosting a team of AmeriCorp volunteers in the Missions Building. So, if you have items to donate to FreeStore, thank you so much, but could you please hold on to them until mid July when the store is open again. We have no place to store them until then. Did you know that our name tags are another way of saying Welcome? “Welcome to Oak Hill UMC, we are glad you are here!” We are wearing our name tags so you will know who we are. We hope you’ll note on your attendance sheet that you would like us to know you, too! This Sunday we will have a new pastor and it is very special for us to let her know who we are. It is hard enough to remember a few names, but 600+!!! Nobody can do that! Not even a pastor! If you have lost your name tag or can’t find it, please let us know on your attendance sheet. If you never had one, please note it, too, along with your phone number. Your tags will be made before the next Sunday and placed in your name tag folder. Packing Your Cookies: Bag the “cooled” cookies in quart-sized Zip Lock style bags (no hard pull tabs) – a dozen to a bag. Do not label these bags in any way, but please do mark on the outside of your carrying bag or box to indicate the type and number of dozens of cookies you have provided. After loading your bags, keep the cookies in a cool place until they are delivered – freeze only for longer periods of time in excess of several weeks. Here’s the classic chocolate chip cookie recipe from Hershey’s: Please note the Kairos two-inch size restriction when baking. KAIROS COOKIES - Kairos #57 We are having our Oak Hill UMC Kairos Cookie Roundup as agape for the Kairos Prison Ministry Ferguson #57 weekend this summer. We will be collecting cookies on Sundays in June and the final deadline is Sunday, July 6th. As part of the Kairos weekend and an expression of God’s love, a dozen chocolate chip cookies go to each inmate and staff member at Ferguson prison – hand delivered by Kairos volunteers. Cookies, along with fresh fruit, are also part of the weekend at each of the seven tables with our 42 participants. Homemade cookies are a tangible expression of Christian love and an indication of God’s concern for a group of people who seldom encounter either in the course of their daily lives. Your loving sacrifice will provide “bread” that shines the Light of God’s Grace into the darkest corners of the Ferguson Unit. Bake them as part of a team, on your own, or both. May God bless your gift of love through baking! Cookies can be delivered to Barbara Cox, Jim Cox, Jan Roberts or Pastor Jim Roberts. A number of people have volunteered to help bake cookies and anyone can join in. Cookie Preparation: Types of cookies considered to be acceptable include: Chocolate Chip, Sugar, Oatmeal, Molasses, Ginger, and Peanut Butter. DO NOT SPRINKLE ADDITIONAL SUGAR OR GLAZING ON THEM. Cookies should be about 2 inches in diameter (bigger is not better) and not more than 1/2 inch thick (to get 12 in a quart size plastic bag – smaller really is better). Chocolate Chip is no doubt the favorite of more than half of the inmates. Please keep separated any cookies containing peanuts or nuts. Key Ingredient: Prayer: Stir prayer individually, as a family, or as a team as you prepare ingredients, place the cookies on the cookie sheets, and throughout the process as you make the cookies. Enjoy the process and ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the prisoners and staff during the Kairos weekend. Pray that each cookie brings the inmate, guard, or warden who eats it closer to God. We want every person to become part of the Family of God. Ingredients: 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) HERSHEY’S Special Dark Chocolate Chips or HERSHEY’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Directions: 1. Heat oven to 375°F. 2. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla in large bowl with mixer until creamy. Add eggs; beat well. Gradually add flour mixture, beating well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts, if desired. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. 3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. Makes about 5 dozen cookies. If you want to do something different, Kairos also uses oatmeal cookies or sugar cookies or any other cookie as “table” cookies during the weekend. Please pack those in non-zipper zip lock bags, too. Any cookies with nuts should be marked too, due to nut allergies for some. Nuts are fine, but must be handled separately. Mixes or cookie dough products are fine, too. We promote Kairos cookies as homemade and prayed over by volunteers that you do not even know as an expression of God’s love. It is similar to the important role of agape at the Walk to Emmaus as an expression of God’s love. Thanks very much! Young at Heart Dinner Group meeting in progress! VBS was still in progress at printing time, but it’s been great fun for everyone! Making manna bags, painting, playing, building, singing and even storytelling! Thanks to Ms Suzanne, Julie Lintz and Kim Horek (VBS directors), and all the volunteers, parents and kids who made it all happen! VBS kids learn about the rebuilding of the temple and construct their own building Storytime girls helped act out the story of the loaves and fishes! Youth Week Oak Hill UMC June 8-12, 2014 “Not Enough Hours in the Day - To PRAY?” Come join us for Youth Sunday School this summer! We will be working on a 10-week Sunday School series on Prayer. At our recent Youth Parent Meeting, many parents expressed concerns for the need to have separate programming for Junior High/Senior High students. Sunday School is the ideal opportunity for your student to meet regularly with peers in their age group. In order to offer Sunday School classes for each age group, WE MUST HAVE MORE TEACHERS!
