I love the Illinois Valley. I grew up here and it will always be home. Although the
area is getting larger and industry is growing, the feel of the area is still that of a
close knit community. The Illinois Valley offers the best of everything. It is large

and a great feeling like you belong somewhere.

My first job out of college was at Union Financial in the Accounting Department. I
was only there for a short period and was then appointed City Clerk of Oglesby. I
learned and took away with me many things from working at the City because I had a

in my career. The more you know the more you grow.

I love the area that I‘ve grown up in. This is home for me and I spend a large majority of my
time advocating for why this region is so valuable to both me and to those who reside in it. I

immediately after high school. Our community has so much to offer and it will continue to

There are a number of accomplishments that I am very proud of. I have been the Executive
Director here for about two years and we‘ve completely eliminated all of our debt and we are
now very financially healthy. In terms of community outreach, I feel that we are affecting
more children than ever. Our membership has gone from 1800 to 2400. We now have a t-ball
program with close to 300 children. We now serve 6100 people in our community (through
programs, membership, and social services) which is 1 out of every 3.5 people in our
operating area.
In 5-10 years, where do you see yourself?
I still see myself as the Executive Director of the Streator Family YMCA. I will continue to

goal is to establish the City Wide Youth Development Committee. I am currently in the
process of spearheading this committee which will include a number of city leaders. Our

Brokaw Imagination
Resident: Princeton, IL
Employed: Princeton, IL
List the professional or community organizations that you belong to?
Bureau County Historical Society, Bureau County Genealogical Society, Prairie Arts Council
(past board member), Friends of the Princeton Public Library, Hegeler Carus Foundation
(Advisory Board), KidLit Foundation (co-founder and board member), Drupal Association,
Knife Rights (charter member)
Why did you stay or return to the IVCC district?
The IVCC district is my family. My entire family remained here because of a love for the area.
However, as I began to work more deeply with local entrepreneurs, I began to realize the deep
vein of creativity and possibility this area has. Yes, current industry wants to reach out and
expand, but there is also a limitless horizon as to what business and industry could be here. I
have become quite a fan of this area and have worked extremely hard to become a standardbearer, and cheerleader, for the Illinois Valley's progress.
List your Education:
Bachelor of Science - Illinois State University & Associate in Arts - IVCC
What was your first job, and what is one thing you learned from your first job?
Katie Johnson hired me at the Apollo Theater in Princeton. Her main lesson? Keep the
customer happy. Everyone comes to movies for one reason: to be entertained. They cannot
be entertained if the popcorn is stale or the floor is sticky. There is no difference today with
any business in the Illinois Valley. Theater, perfume boutique, grocery store; customers need
to be kept happy. What I try to do, harkening back to my first job, is to keep the popcorn
from getting stale...metaphorically speaking.
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
My greatest professional accomplishment so far was being part of a small group of
volunteers/business owners that, over the course of four years, brought over 19,000 people
to Princeton for Festival 9 ¾ (street carnival that celebrated the releases of the last two
books of the Harry Potter series, with a couple of years with no books releases in between). It
was through Festival 9 ¾ that the non-profit KidLit Foundation was founded.
In 5-10 years, where do you see yourself?
It is impossible to say, given the mind-spinningly fast evolution of technology. Where will
any of us be? I know I will still live and work in the Illinois Valley and I hope to have helped
local businesses and industry come to understand that technology isn't scary, it isn't
difficult. It is easy, it's flexible, and it can bring more and more customers to the front door,
whether that door has a knob or a portal.

What was your first job, and what is one thing you learned from your first job
My first job was at age 11 delivering newspapers for the Aurora Beacon News. It was
an everyday job. Saturday and Sunday newspapers had to be delivered by 9am. It
taught me discipline, and a strong 7 days a week work ethic which I‘ve carried
forward to today.
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
Turning a passion into job which supports a family of 5 (soon to be 6). I left a full
time job in the construction field 7 years ago and went into the antiques and estate
sale business. My small antique shop has transformed into a 25,000 sq. ft. building
which
houses both Main Street Estate Sales and Matthew Bullock Auctioneers.

was given to us.
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
My greatest professional accomplishment to this point was

What was your first job, and what is one thing you learned from your first job?
My first job was getting off the school bus at my father‘s company and doing
whatever needed to be done for him. He designed and invented products from his
small shop in Granville, IL. I was exposed to every facet of electronics and innovation
for as long as I can remember. This exposure gave me the drive and passion to invent
new products that help people solve everyday problems.
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment would be hard to narrow down to a single item. It seems
like every month I do something for a client that gives them that ah hah moment
When others say it can‘t be done I love to take on the challenge .If I had to pick one
thing I would have to say being part of the design team for Lockheed Martin on the
MRAP vehicle. Working hand in hand with the soldiers that would use our vehicle and
knowing that a product I designed would protect so many people.
In 5-10 years, where do you see yourself?

every person that came through the door, and that made a huge impression on me. I
love taking the time to get to know people‘s stories. I also learned the hard work and

documentary I gathered, wrote, and produced from Pakistan on the sentiment of Pakistanis as the U.S.
military invaded neighboring Afghanistan. This coverage, titled ―Inside Pakistan: America at War‖
resulted in numerous professional awards, including the Radio and Television News Directors
Association (RTNDA) Edward R. Murrow Award. By a personal standard, my greatest professional
accomplishment is the most recent, personal project I completed earlier this year. I was fortunate to
produce a television documentary about my high school choir director, Roger Amm. Titled
―Something of Love: A Tribute to Roger Amm,‖ the program aired on WTVP-TV, the PBS affiliate in
Peoria, Illinois, and tells the story of how Mr. Amm inspired generations of his students, and the

directed, wrote, and edited through support from the Ottawa Township High School Educational
Foundation and the Ottawa Visitor‘s Center.

our young area graduates think that they need to move out of the area to find career opportunities,
and that‘s simply not true. The Illinois Valley has given me an excellent professional path close to
friends and family with many of the same amenities that the suburbs and more metropolitan areas
have to offer.
List your Education:
Master of Arts in Organizational Management-University of Phoenix; Bachelor of Science in Public
Relations-Illinois State University; Associate of Arts in Sociology-Illinois Valley Community College;

What was your first job, and what is one thing you learned from your first job?
My first job was working at the Spring Valley Tastee Freez when I was 16 years old. Above all, I
learned that the customer is always your first priority. Customers are the reason why any business
exists. Being polite, professional and responsive to their needs are work habits that are easily
transferrable to any role. I wish everyone could start out in a customer service-related position
because they will undoubtedly learn workplace lessons that will serve them for a lifetime.
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
In 1999, I decided that it was important for me to go back to school and earn my master‘s degree. At
the time, online education and other non-traditional forms of higher education was really a very new
concept, and I was even a little skeptical at first. I took a chance and earned my degree (while
working full-time) through a non-traditional program in 2002. It was a wonderful experience, and I
can‘t say enough times how much getting an education has helped me in my career. A few years ago,
my story was featured in HR Magazine, a monthly publication of the Society of Human Resource
Management. I took a lot of pride in that article because things had really come full-circle. I was no
longer just a student of my profession. I had a story to tell that could hopefully help others just
starting out.
In 5-10 years, where do you see yourself?
Anyone who has achieved any level of professional success, particularly at a young age, almost always
did so because someone took a chance, someone opened a door. Along the way, I had many people
like that in my own career. I was given those opportunities to prove myself, and I have never stopped
being grateful for the faith and confidence those early mentors placed in me. In 5-10 years, I hope
that I am well-positioned to open doors for the next generation of professionals.

Why did you stay or return to the IVCC district?
I am a transplant. It will be 13 years this January. I grew up in the Sauk Valley Area (Rock
Falls-Sterling) and have many fond memories of Rock Falls/ Hall basketball games from the
mid to late 90‘s… and watched with great pride as the Rockets went on to capture the state
title in 1998 (sorry Red Devil fans.) But, now I find myself at Red Devil games in Red and
Black (I still turn the red to green when RF is in town.)
I moved to LaSalle from Chicago in 2001 after getting the job as News Director of the Radio
Group. My small town instincts instantly kicked in, especially after being swallowed up by
the fast pace Chicago lifestyle and trying to find a place in the big city. I instantly fell in
love with the Illinois Valley.

Bachelor‘s Degree North Central College, Naperville, IL.
What was your first job, and what is one thing you learned from your first job?
My first job was news intern/part time announcer/board operator at WSDR AM1240 in
Sterling. At 16, I was reading and writing newscasts, chasing tornados, and racing off to
report on fires… as well as operating Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell on Saturday/Sunday
overnights. I quickly learned to solve problems without spending money. If you want to do
something to attract customers/listeners, you have to be creative. Side note: small market
radio is notorious for not having a budget, and will ‗trade ads‘ for almost anything (in the
case of WSDR – it was office furniture.)
What has been your greatest professional accomplishment?
Starting a business: Guys on the Radio: DJ Service- Shap and I created a DJ Company with
―Event Planning‖ as the focus. Music is second nature for the two of us, but – the ability to
run a successful event, down to the smallest of details, is where we shine. These past two
years have been incredible, and we look forward to what the future brings.

As an innovative entrepaneur, launching start-up companies. At Illinois Valley Cellular, I
work with new business ventures including Fliptext Mobile SMS Marketing and Skymessage
