Be Made Clean
The liturgical year and the spiritual life coincide. This is
a certainty, but how to explain it?
Let me say what I understand, since it is the reason I
write these reflections each week. (1) The goal of
spiritual life is to let oneself be open to the God of all
creation. (2) You and I are constructed so that we
become completely ourselves when (and only when) we
do this explicitly or implicitly. (3) We love and are loved
insofar as it takes place. All of this is the "spiritual life,"
at least in this way of looking at it.
Maybe we can think here about number (1) and this
week's Gospel.
The gospel stories this year are being told by Mark, just
as they were told by Matthew last year. Mark’s is the
most vivid of the gospels. Even though he is direct and
uses few words, still, he has more concrete details about
the stories. Last week Jesus did not just “cure” Peter’s
mother-in-law, a bland way of putting it, he “grasped
her hand, and helped her up.” When Jesus stills the
storm at sea, he is not just “in the boat,” according to
Mark, he is "at the stern" of it; and he is not just asleep,
but asleep “on a cushion.”
Mark's approach helps us to get the texture of the story,
to listen with our imaginations and let the life of Jesus
enter in. We open to the God of all creation as we
receive Jesus, the Word of God. We partake of his life in

ritual, we recall it in the readings and we receive it as
sacrament. Whether we remember it explicitly or not,
our goal is to “know him more clearly, love him more
dearly, follow him more nearly.”
So, as listeners, we begin by quieting down, perhaps
admitting how little each of us knows, and then we let
Jesus’ life speak to us in the readings.
We might notice a few things in this Sunday's Gospel:
that the man who walks up to Jesus, covered with scales
and scabs, is out of place. As long as the sores are on him
we know already that he should “dwell apart, making
his abode outside the camp,” according to the explicit
instructions of the First Reading. He should be ringing a
bell and crying out "Unclean, unclean!"
But Jesus does not mind. In Mark's words, Jesus is
“moved with pity.” Just three words, but they tell us so
much.
Then a wonderful statement from the leper. "If you want
to, you can make me clean." He has to believe in Jesus'
power in order to say such a thing. It is a confession of
faith.
Jesus answers, “I do want to.” Direct, honest, so
revealing of God. The whole life of Jesus seems to consist
of this desire to help those who are in trouble, to give to
those who have a seed of faith to receive the cure.
Finally, in an extraordinary move, Jesus stretches out his
hand and touches the man. The ancient belief was that
this sickness was communicable, and at the very least it
was disgusting. Yet Jesus touches him with care and
says, "Be made clean."
Let’s pray and ponder in our hearts this wonderful story
from Mark (and from Peter?). It tells us about God.

Pastoral Care Minister Position
Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines, Iowa
seeks a Full-Time Pastoral Care Minister for our
parish of 1,100 households. The focus of this ministry
is to the elderly, the sick, those in care facilities, the
home-bound and to the dying and their families. This
position includes supervision, coordination and
education of volunteers who share this
ministry. Holy Trinity Parish has an active Stephen
Ministries program which the Pastoral Care Minister
coordinates. Qualifications: Practicing Catholic,
degree or experience in nursing, and prior
involvement in pastoral care. Driving is required for
this position. The Pastoral Care Minister must have a
valid driver’s license, an insured vehicle in good
working order and a good driving record. In
addition, the applicants will undergo background
checks and complete diocesan child sexual abuse
prevention program.

Father-Daughter Dance

SAINT OF THE WEEK
Paul Miki and Companions,
Martyrs, d. 1597
During the 1550s, St. Francis
Xavier evangelized much of
Japan and made hundreds of
thousands of converts to
Christianity. Some forty years
later, one of those, Paul Miki, a
Jesuit scholastic studying for
the priesthood, and twentyfive others died for their faith
at Nagasaki. The group
included Jesuit and Franciscan
priests, brothers, laymen, a doctor, teachers, a soldier,
old people, and young altar servers. Their
nationalities included Spaniards, a Mexican, and an
Indian, as well as native Japanese. Of this group of
twenty-six, Paul Miki became the best known. As he
was dying on the cross, Paul, who was native
Japanese, preached to the crowds and prayed for his
executioners.
The Shõgun who had these martyrs killed wished to
wipe out Christianity in Japan, calling it a religion
brought by foreigners intending to conquer the
country. A great show was made of the killing. The
victims were maimed and then led, bloodied, through
several towns to a hill, known today as Holy
Mountain, for their execution. This action was meant
to terrorize the people into giving up their Christian
faith.
When missionaries returned to Japan almost three
hundred years later, they initially found no sign of
Christianity. After they were established, they found
thousands of Christians living around Nagasaki who
had secretly preserved their faith, a tribute to the
steadfastness of Paul and the others, as well as to St.
Francis Xavier. Paul and his companions were
beatified within a few years after their deaths, but
were finally canonized in 1862.
We celebrate the memorial for all of these saints on
February 6.
Paul's message today: Like many other martyrs, Paul
forgave and prayed for his slayers. It is never easy to
forgive those who have hurt us in some way, but if
Paul could forgive those who killed him, can’t we
forgive those who have caused us to suffer in some
lesser way?
Do you have some family member or close acquaintance
who has hurt you? Think about how you can shed this
burden by forgiving that person.
