The afternoon event began on the beautiful open plaza with the ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by none other than the Honorable Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Congresswoman Waters remarked on her long-term relationship with the regional center and with the late O.V. Smith, a pioneer in the field of work related to those with development disabilities. The main program then moved into the newly restored auditorium in the Historic Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building. Opening remarks were made by SCLARC Board President, Ana DaSilva and Terrence Payne, President of Friends Housing. Proclamations were read, which were received by the Honorable Congresswoman Karen Bass, Senator Ricardo Lara and Assemblyman Anthony Rendon. Welcome remarks were made by 8th District Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson and 9th District Councilman Curren Price. For the two men, the events had special meaning because they focused on military veterans, specifically to fight homelessness and end hunger. “After spending 10 years in the military myself, it’s awesome to see people come together to try to eliminate homelessness for veterans,” said Henderson, an Army veteran who participated in the walk with his wife, Rosetta Dantzler Henderson, a Southern Califor- nia Edison project manager. “I really look forward to an event like this making a big difference.” Los Angeles is part of a national effort to find housing for the country’s homeless veterans. In a count earlier this year, officials identified 4,344 homeless veterans in the greater Los Angeles area alone. Nearly 50 Edison employees and their families were among 12,000 volunteers who participated in Saturday’s fundraising walk/run. see EDISON Pg. 5 Edison volunteers add peanut butter and apricots to food boxes being packed at the Orange County Food Bank as part of National Family Volunteer Day. Coliseum gave USC the PAC 12 South title, the Los Angeles City Title and a shot at Stanford in the Conference Championship game this Saturday. The winner heads to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. Trojan QB Cody Kessler connected on 15 0f 26 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Smith rumbled his away for 130 yards on 25 carries and JuJu Smith- Shuster had five catches for 85 yards as the clearly dominant Trojans put together 380 yards of offense in a game. phases super return man Adoree Jackson returned a punt 42 yards for a touchdown shortly before half. It was the second one this season.” I saw everyone overlap me and then I just wanted to go down the sideline,” said Jackson. Rasheem Green put the Trojans (8-4-5-3) ahead to stay in the third quarter when the freshman defensive lineman returned a Rosen fumble for a 32-yards for a touchdown. “It was like a dream come true,” said Green “I couldn’t believe it happen, there was no one around. My eyes got so big I just picked it up and ran.” Ronald Jones II ran for 83 yards and became the top freshman rusher in USC history, surpassing Charles White’s season mark. The defense had a big game as the Trojans sacked freshman QB Josh Rosen five times. He finished the day completing 19 of 37 passes for 227 yards but had three turnovers. USC improved to 5-2 under interim coach Clay Helton, winning five of its last six games. The interim title was removed a few days after the win as Helton was signed to a new five year contract. John Perkins had 5 catches for 36 yards and Jordan Payton had 5 receptions for 60 yards for the Bruins (8-4,5-3) . It was Senior Day and Greg Townsend II played his last game for Troy. Call Aviation Institute of Maintenance 866-231-7177 When her two younger sisters, Nina, 20, and Lazarina, 18, found the same success in the following years, the trio made Caltech history. “In the nearly half-century since Caltech began admitting women to its undergraduate program, 2015 is almost certainly the first year we’ve had three sisters enrolled in three different graduating classes at the same time,” said Barbara Green, Caltech’s interim dean of undergraduate admissions, in a statement. According to Caltech, an applicant’s family does not factor into the person’s application, as each candidate is reviewed independently of any ties the family may have. “For three family members to receive consecutive offers of admission indicates how tremendously talented all three of them must be,” said Jarrid Whitney, Caltech’s admissions director. The sisters, from Blue Springs, Mo., take after their mother, Maria Butkovich, a chemical engineer. Both Slava, a junior, and Nina, a sophomore, major in chemical engineering. Lazarina, a freshman, has not decided between chemistry and chemical engineering. Their father, Eric, is a lawyer. “It focuses a lot on trying to solve problems,” Slava said of chemical engineering. “I think it is rather versatile as far as majors go.” Last year, Slava was selected for a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. For Nina, the sciences are more objective than other fields, she said. Slava’s acceptance into Caltech led to Nina and Lazarina’s love for the school, which they developed from visiting their sister. Slava chose Caltech because of its reputation, the classes it offered in her field and the small class sizes, she said. Nina said the small campus and inter-connectivity between the student communities and their field of studies drew her to Caltech. The sisters aren’t competitive. They grew up with a strong belief in cooperation, they said. They still eat dinner together most nights. By having their sisters close and in the same field, the Butkovichs act as a support structure for each other. Slava, 21, is able to share her experiences with professors and classes. By chance, Slava also serves as a teaching assistant in one of the freshmen lab classes Lazarina is taking. “If I need advice, they’re the ones I go to,” Lazarina said. “They’re like your best friends. We’re really close.” CCN LET US SAVE YOU TIME & MONEY REACH 75+ MILLION READERS WITH ONE ORDER, ONE BILL! u Community Classified 25 words/245+ papers 1x $650 Statewide $435 North/$485 South u Daily Classified 25 words/41 papers/7 days 7 days $995 $650 North/$650 South COMBO u CLASSIFIED 25 words/282+ papers 8 days $1,270 Statewide DISPLAY - Community Newspapers u 140+ papers 1x $1,600 2x2 Statewide; Sizes: 2x2; 2x4; 2x5; 2x6 $1,240 2x2 No.; $1,240 2x2 So. Dedication Left to right: Frank Harris and Donald Dustin and Reginald Andrews On November 7, 2015 in recognition of their dedicated service to the Los Angeles school system and Locke High School, the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Unified School and Green Dot Public Schools congratulated the three Honorees Frank Harris, Donald Dustin and Reginald Andrews with a ceremony honoring their service to their students. The music building was named the Harris, Dustin, and Andrews Music Building to honor the 60 plus collective years of teaching music by the three honorees since the opening of Locke High School in 1967. William Allen Young star of the new Wednesday night CBS Drama Black Code was the outstanding Master of Ceremonies for the event. William is also an alumnus of the Locke Band and Orchestra. Locke Alumni Patrice Rushen, Raymond Pounds and Simeon Stewart presented plaques from the Locke High Alumni Council to the three teachers in honor of the building dedication. The trio was honored with a proclamation from L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas presented by Dr. Chris Hickey, also a band alumnus. Kristen Gordon the deputy of City Councilman Marqueece HarrisDawson spoke on behalf of Council District 8 with a promise of more honors to come. Bruce Peterson, Co-President of the Locke Alumni Council, gave an oral history of the Band and Orchestra program under the three honorees. Under the direction of Frank Harris, Donald Dustin and Reggie Andrews, Locke High School’s Music program became the number one Marching Band in Los Angeles. Beating all High Schools in direct competition, Locke High repre- sented all schools in Los Angeles in the Rose Parade. The Locke band then became the nucleus of the Los Angeles All City Marching Band, created so other students in different schools beside Locke could also participate in the Rose Bowl every year. The Locke music program has produced artists such as Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, who was present to honor his music teachers in person, Gerald Albright, Tyrese Gibson, Terrace Martin, La Vern Antoine who played a solo violin piece, and Del Atkins, who was the Musical Director for the dedication ceremony dinner which was hosted by James Janisse and Vickie Brown. November 7, 2015 will be a date all three honorees Frank Harris, Don Dustin and Reggie Andrews will remember for years to come. CCN Candelaria Lopez had tried to learn English before, but it didn’t work. She couldn’t always make it to class, and when she could, it was hard to find the energy to sit through a three-hour session after her long days as a farmworker in New York’s Hudson Valley region. So even after 20 years in the United States, the Mexican immigrant was still pretty much only comfortable saying “Hi.” Not these days, though, thanks to a unique pilot English language learning program offered by New York state that works through phone calls and text messages. The 38-year-old mother of four said she has had a whole new world open up for her in recent months — new responsibilities at work, talking to her daughter’s teacher without needing a translator, even helping another Spanishspeaking family find an apartment to rent. “For me, it’s happy,” she said. “For me, it’s exciting.” New York state launched the pilot through its Office for New Americans earlier this year. The premise is simple — those who have signed up call a number whenever they want to hear recorded lessons. They are then asked questions they answer via text messages to show they’ve understood what’s being taught. Get the questions right, move on to the next unit. Answer incorrectly, and a coach will call to help clarify the concept. It’s low-tech enough — no apps, no need for fancy smartphones. Anyone with even the most basic phone can access it and it is flexible enough that users can go at whatever speed they’re comfortable with. It’s free of charge, aside from whatever their phone plans would charge for cell phone minutes or sending and receiving see IMMIGRANTS Pg. 5 Make Sure To Visit The California Crusader Newspaper on The WEB 7th Annual SANTA Monica Pub Crawl Returns Sat.12-12-15 Benefiting The 7th annual SANTA Monica Pub Crawl returns with merry good cheer on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. Assembled from corrugated patina metal, reclaimed wood, found objects, galvanized metal, polycarbonate panels, end grain plywood and natural cork, Dominique Moody will live in the trailer and offer free tours in her portable artwork. Tours are available from Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the duration of its visit to CAAM. Despite loosing part of her eyesight due to a genetic form of Macular Degeneration, Moody’s creative insight continues to reach new heights and has required her to transition from being a realist illustrator to an assemblage sculptor. Los Angeles has enabled Moody to become immersed in the creative community and broad spectrum of art to began practicing the art of assemblage. Moody successfully funded her current creation, NOMAD in 2012 through the US Artists Projects Online Fundraiser. “The Nomad is an assemblage artwork that functions as a dwelling and is mobile. Its practice reflects the ideas and actions of social sculpture. As a portrait of home, it inspires viewers to remember, think and feel a call and response to action. It’s mobility commands freedom. Its porch evokes storytelling,” says Moody. “Its creation was inspired by my personal and family story through a cultural legacy.” The project, now a “life practice” took close to four years to complete, but for Moody it was a 30year dream. Black and born in Germany during the 1950s, Moody developed a comprehensive perspective of the world through her family’s ability to nomadize. Constantly on the move she created a special connection and foundation to the African diaspora. Through a Mitochondrial test Moody’s sister discovered their family origins traced back to Africa’s Fulani tribe, ironically, the largest pastoral nomadic group in the world. Moody graduated high school at the age of 15 and as an emancipated minor began living on her own in New York. As a painter and illustrator she studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and the Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, New York. Throughout her creative journey, Moody has been granted numerous awards and participated in group and solo exhibitions. The success of her “Into the Dreambox” exhibition at the Watts Towers Art Center in 1996, prompted her to move to Los Angeles. For 50 years, PPLA has been helping women, men, and teens get the compassionate care they need and deserve. The largest provider of reproductive health care services in LA County, PPLA provided services to 150,000 patients at 19 health centers last year. The new West Hollywood center will allow even more Angelenos to get the highquality care and information they need. Additionally, the HIV epidemic is one of the most pressing public health issues in the County, with nearly 2,000 individuals becoming newly diagnosed with HIV each year. PPLA provides HIV testing and works to reduce stigma around HIV/AIDS through counseling and education at its health centers, in classrooms, and in the community. The iconic funk rhythm band Earth, Wind & Fire will perform for the first time in Cuba during the third edition of the Havana World Music festival, organizers of the March 2016 event confirmed to EFE. The U.S. band is scheduled to perform numbers from its most recent album “EW & Experience,” although additional details of their show remain to be specified. Earth, Wind & Fire will head the list of bands at the third Havana World Music festi- val, which will also include the Mexican band Centavrvs, nominated for a Latin Grammy; Ellas, a trio of mariachis from Los Angeles; Spaniards Jorge Pardo and Lin Cortes, and Carolina Camacho from the Dominican Republic. So far, the host country’s performers will include salsa band Havana D’ Primera, singer-songwriter Kelvis Ochoa, the Yoruba Andabo folk group and jazz newcomers Yissy & Bandancha, among others. Havana World Music was launched in 2014 by Eme Alfonso as a result of his experience in a project to investigate the island’s ethniccultural origins. According to the artist, the aim of the festival is to suggest to the young Cuban public “new sounds coming from different cultural areas,” which make the event a forum for disseminating alternative musical styles outside normal commercial routes.
