Doctor’s Orders: Kids Need to Play
Parents know it. Teachers know it. And now pediatricians
have weighed in with an official opinion about it. What’s
the big consensus? Kids need regular doses of constructive
play for healthy development, says the American Academy
of Pediatrics (AAP), and play is an important
factor in building strong parent-child bonds.
In the January 2007 issue of the
journal Pediatrics , Kenneth R.
Ginsburg, MD, MSEd states, “Free and
unstructured play is healthy—in fact,
essential—for helping children reach
important social, emotional, and
cognitive developmental milestones as well as helping
them manage stress and become resilient.”
Judy Aagard, co-owner and buyer at Tiny Tots Diaper
Service and Baby Boutique, who is dedicated to carrying toys
that encourage children to use their imagination, develop
social and emotional skills, and stay physically active, also
applauds the pediatricians’ report.

deeply committed to their child’s
healthy development. If your
pediatrician says that you need to let
your child have more free play time,
that can give parents confidence that
slowing down is not only okay—it’s
actually recommended.”
Many parents will agree that it’s hard to be a relaxed, bonded
family with all the emphasis on achievement and the
belief that lots of organized activities are important for their
children. Aagard points to some specific recommendations
contained in the AAP report that she feels are especially
useful for today’s parents.
It’s not about what the toy can do, but rather what the child
can do with the toy. The report encourages parents to look
for toys that encourage imaginative, rather than passive
play.

Aagard suggests that parents take note of these
recommendations as well:
♦ Building academic skills and other skills like
competence in a sport or in music may be important
goals, but they should be balanced with the equally
important (if not more important) goals of promoting
the healthy development of social and emotional skills.
Many social and emotional skills—for example, self-confidence, self-regulation, resiliency, and stress management—are best learned through experience, which for
kids generally means play.”
♦ Kids don’t need to have a long
list of wide ranging accomplishments to be successful or to
compete in the adult world. The
most important quality that will
lead to their success will be a
sense of personal security and
confidence.
♦ Claims made by some compa-
nies in marketing their products, suggesting that kids
can become “super children” if they use the product,
play on parents’ desires to be “good parents.” Parents
should learn how to filter out advertising messages that
promise things their children don’t really need. There
are plenty of people willing to escalate your worries that
you’re being a bad parent if you don’t buy the latest
thing for your child or if you don’t sign them up for more
lessons or sports than your family can handle. Stay
focused on what your child and your family really need
and what you can afford—in terms of dollars, time, and
the extra stress.

CONGRATULATIONS to those who have
graduated from diapers. Thank you for giving
us the privilege to help out with some of the
“dirty work”. We hope the diapering years
have been a time of wonderful memories for
your family.
A single-use product cannot
accurately be labeled “ecofriendly” simply because it
doesn’t contain chlorine, dyes,
perfumes or latex.
It is not our normal business practice
to confront other companies, but in
lieu of the anniversary of Earth Day
we feel compelled (and find it easier
to justify) exposing an environmental
and health inconsistency. We personally shop at Whole Foods Markets
because we believe they maintain a higher standard then
other markets and trust that the products we purchase have
been pre-selected and accurately reflect our shared values.
Whole Foods recently introduced their private label paper diaper. Each bag of 365
Whole Food diapers says, “At Whole Foods
Market, we care about your baby’s health
as much as we care about the health of the
world he or she will inherit…..super-absorbent gel helps to keep your little bundle of
joy comfortable and dry, in the most ecologically
conscientious way possible.”
Disposable diapers of any type, including the private label
that Whole Foods sells, do not offer the eco benefits a customer assumes they are getting. The reality is that every
disposable diaper made is a brazen denial of the reduce,
reuse, recycle priority of conservation. A single-use
product cannot accurately be labeled “eco-friendly” simply
because it doesn’t contain chlorine, dyes, perfumes or
latex. Single-use and eco-friendly are an oxymoron.
Health concerns are even more disturbing. Every brand of
paper diapers, except Tushies*, contain super-absorbent gel
called sodium polyacrylate. This chemical has been linked
to toxic shock syndrome, an increase in childhood asthma
and scrotal temperature increase in boys. It is troubling
that Whole Foods would choose to include this chemical in
a product they privately make and sell for use on babies.
The following excerpts from the Whole Foods website are
inconsistent with their decision to carry a diaper that
contains chemicals and is 100% garbage:
♦ We provide personal care products that support health and
well-being.
♦ We carefully evaluate each and every product we sell.
♦ We take a look at your environment and try to eliminate
any unnecessary chemicals.
♦ We are committed to offering you products with natural
ingredients, free of unnecessary additives.
♦Our Whole Baby line includes eco-friendly diapers.
Please let Whole Foods know if you feel they should stop
advertising their disposable diapers as eco-friendly and
healthy for babies. Or better yet, maybe they could stop
selling disposable diapers altogether and offer a reusable
option in their place. There is hope they will listen and
change their diaper product line.
*Tiny Tots sells Tushies Disposable Diapers because to our knowledge it
is the only disposable diaper available that doesn’t contain sodium
polyacrylate. Even though they are chlorine, dye, perfume and latex
free, we make no eco-friendly claims regarding their use. We carry them
solely because they are a healthier alternative to the other single-use
diapers on the market.

The only single-use diaper on the market today that doesn’t contain
super absorbent gelling chemicals (AGM) is Tushies. They are a

Easy Audit For Your Diaper Count
An easy way to have us audit your diaper inventory is to
write a 2-word note on the label on the soiled bag before
you set it outside - “25 left”, or whatever number of clean
diapers are left in your home. These labels are cut off the
diaper bag and
turned into the
office after the
soiled
diaper
counter counts
your bag and
writes the count
on the label.
When we add up the number left + the soiled count + the
number of diapers delivered that day, we can determine
if your rotation is correct. Some customers do this every
week. Some do it once a month.

This 7 week class begins on April 18 and ends on May
30. It will be on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 The
cost is $110; please pre-register as space is limited.

Toddler Wearing Workshop

Cost for baby wearing workshops are $25
per class (or $40 on day of event if there
is space available). Our baby wearing expert, Rebecca
Bennett, works with each baby and their parent(s).

Infant & Child CPR Class
Thursday, May 24 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.
The cost is $35 per person; advance registration is required. Students learn CPR,
rescue breathing and choke saving for
infants and children 0-8 years old and receive an ASHI
CPR card valid for 2 years.
