I have always loved the Botanist;
I was enticed by its atmosphere
and cosy wooden feel. It warms
you up on a cold winter evening
(and I don’t just mean by
turning the heating up). It has
an inviting relaxed ambience
which envelopes you as you
listen to the live acoustic music.
I went on a Wednesday night to
have a bite to eat and a drink
or three whilst being serenaded
by the local musical talent. We
sat at one of the tables by the
bar and proceeded to order a
few ‘nibbles’ to make sure the
cocktails wouldn’t go down the
wrong way. We decided on the
cumberland and pork chipolatas
with honey grain mustard, salt
and pepper onion petals and
a deli board with meats and
cheese. It was all delicious and
a perfect mid week ‘pre drink’
bite.
For those of you that know the
Botanist, you will know cocktails
are their speciality; and for
those that don’t, I am here to
tell you just how special they
are. I only have limited words
for my article, so I can’t talk
about them all; although I would
if I could. We had different
cocktails each time so we could
a lover of the classic Caipirinha
fell in love with the Botanist’s
Basil and Plum version. I myself,
was torn between the English
Mojito (English because it’s
made with Gin) with its cool
and fresh cucumber finish and
the Raspberry and Thyme
Martini. The latter was a risky
choice, I wasn’t sure about
thyme in a drink but I was
pleasantly surprised; it set it off
beautifully.
All of their cocktails have a
unique edge, making each
drink a new, exciting taste
sensation. In their most recent
charity venture, The Botanist
bartenders had competed
against one another to create
a charity cocktail which
would be sold throughout the
month of October to raise
money for The Haven Breast
Cancer Support Centre. The
aptly named winning cocktail
‘Seventh Haven’, tastes like
liquid chocolate orange, made
with ‘Bloom Gin’, to add a
unique floral edge to the
‘heavenly’ charity cocktail. It
was wonderful to see our local
businesses supporting such
a worthy cause. I am secretly
hoping they decide to make
it a permanent feature, if not I
have.
you would think the cocktails
would be the highlight of the
night and although a close
second, the music topped it
for me. I knew The Botanist
had live music but what I didn’t
know was, it is every night! They
have an array of professional
singers and musicians each with
a different style. Although they
will always play to the crowd,
they tend to have duo acts on
the busier nights to give it a bit
more oomph and more mellow
acts on the calmer evenings to
suit to mood.
We were lucky enough to
experience the dulcet tones of
Jonny Ross. He started singing
a few well known numbers,
ranging from Mumford and
Sons to a bit of John Legend.
He even threw in his own
adaptation of ‘Lucky’ by Pharrell
Williams. His version was
amazing; he had me silenced
(which is difficult to achieve I
can tell you). He then said the
words we had been waiting
to hear… ‘any requests’. We
threw a few challenging ones
at him over the course of the
evening and what was really
impressive is he knew them
he actually runs a couple of
the largest music agencies in
the UK. The Botanist has really
gone all out to provide Leeds
with top entertainment. Rachel
then decided to change (some
may say lower) the tone and
requested a ‘Back Street Boys’
classic. Jonny looked a little
hesitant, that was until half of
the bar had started signing
‘I want it that way’; even the
bar staff were dancing along!
We had an amazing evening,
the staff could not have been
lovelier and for me that makes
the world of difference. Great
atmosphere, amazing cocktails
and vivacious music; three darn
good reasons to head down to
The Botanist.

MALMAISON
ChAT EUA BRIAND
I think it’s fair to say that
Leeds as a city does fine
dining rather well, and
one place that has an
exceptional reputation for
such things is the Brassiere City Dweller and socialite, Rachel Flynn discovers how affordable an evening at

The current offer on the table is
the Malmaison ‘Chat Eau Briand’
at £25.00 per person, which I
decided to take full advantage
of for a long overdue catch up
with my friend.
With Malmaison being situated
slap bang in the city centre on
Swinegate I have found myself
spending many evenings down
in the decadent Malmaison
cellar bar, working my way
through the cocktail menu or
having a glass of bubbly or
three with my mates, but had
yet (until this Monday evening)
stepped into the Brassiere
Restaurant. Sticking with a
classic dark wood and red
brick decor the restaurant floor
exudes quality and has hint
of luxury in the air whilst still
feeling relaxed. On arrival my
friend and I were met by our
waiter Alex who escorted us
to our table, gave us the menu
with my order of my favourite
starter Moules Mariniere and
my friend spotted the Thai
BBQ Chicken Lollipops with
dipping sauce. The mussels in
white wine sauce with parsley,
garlic and shallots were huge,
fresh and tasted devine with the
creamy broth, and the sweet,
sticky sauce went perfectly
with the BBQ meat on the bone
lollipops.
As already mentioned for main
we had the Chat Eau Briand
special, something I have not
stopped harping on about
ever since. We asked for our
steak to be cooked medium
rare and that’s exactly how
it was presented to us, the
meat was pink, tender and
being 600mg in weight there
was plenty to share. The offer
came with a Bernaise sauce as
standard, a buttery, calorific
accompaniment which I could
have quite happily scraped the
pot out (had I not been in such
a classy restaurant of course!),
and a portion of skin on fries
which came in their own ‘for
your fries only’ tin, one of the
many small details that gave
the experience that signature
Malmaison touch. The bottle of
Argentinian Malbec that came
as part of the deal had aromas
of plums, cherries and violets,
and was velvety with a clean
finish. I’ve never thought of
myself as much of a red wine
drinker, however pairing this
Malbec with the tenderloin
steak may very well have made
me a convert. As I have already
mentioned the Chat Eau Briand
offer is just £25.00 per person,
with the quality of the meat, the
wine, the presentation and the
service it’s an absolute steal.
For dessert we could not resist
the made to order pear Tart
Tatin served with fresh cream.
As it was made to order we
waited a little longer than
normal but this was not a
problem, it gave us chance to
let our feast so far settle, work

our way down the bottle of
Malbec and get the low down
on the latest gossip. When the
tart arrived it was definitely
worth the wait, the pears were
drizzled in a Carmel like sauce
which had that satisfying stick
to your teeth element, and the
pastry was crispy in all the right
places.
When dining in The Brassiere
you can’t help but notice that
extra special aspect it has to it,
the calm ambience and expert
service contributes to the
well-deserved reputation that
Malmaison has.
To finish our evening of fine
dining at its best we retired to
the cellar bar to wind down with
a classic cocktail, a full belly
and a slightly tipsy head...all the
signs of a fantastic night!
Whether you’re looking for a
quality evening with a good
friend, or a romantic venue
for a first date or anniversary,
Brassiere at Malmaison is
bound to impress, and I can
confidently recommend the
Chat Eau Briand as a must!
you’d be mad not to book!

4 STAR TREATMENT IN HEADINGLEY
View Over Headingley Stadium from Headingley Lodge
Despite being a girl who knows
virtually nothing of cricket
or rugby, even I’ve heard of
the world-famous Headingley
Stadium. What I didn’t know,
until I was lucky enough to stay
recently, is that someone had
the brilliant idea of converting
part of the complex into a
fabulous 36-bedroom hotel
known as the Headingley
Lodge.
HEADINGLEY
LODGE HOTEL
& SUKHOTHAI
Yasmin Macis, Leeds City Dweller Magazine’s
Travel writer, spends a night nearer to home in
Headingley. Read about her stay in the famous
Headingley Lodge 4 Star Hotel and a fantastic
Thai dining experience at Sukhothai.
10 | City Dweller Magazine
As far as I’m concerned, any
chance to spend a night in
top quality accommodation
is to be jumped at; especially
when the buzzing nightlife of
Headingley’s legendary student
scene is right on the doorstep
and I get to tap into the energy
of my old college days! But
should the frenetic pace of
the lively bars and restaurants
become overwhelming, the
more sophisticated nightlife
of Leeds city centre is only
a 10-minute cab ride away.
This option may appeal to
business travellers jetting into
nearby Leeds-Bradford Airport
and choosing the Lodge as a
convenient stopover.
The hotel and stadium
entrances are adjacent, so
it felt a little like we were
headed to a match, although
none was scheduled and
the neighbourhood was
relatively calm and quiet,
which boded well for getting
an uninterrupted night’s sleep.
The receptionist’s welcome
was warm and enthusiastic and
I noted the air of quality and
professionalism one expects
of a modern 4-star hotel. All
modern facilities are available,
including wi-fi, TV (with Sky
Sports channels of course!) tea
and coffee-making facilities
and, most importantly in this
busy part of Leeds, free onsite
parking.
The biggest surprise was yet to
come though, when we walked
into our room and gasped at
the astonishing uninterrupted
view across the vivid green
pitch. On match days this must
be every fan’s sporting nirvana!
Staying right in the heart of the
action and soaking up all that
wonderful atmosphere. The
double room was also larger
www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk
than many I’ve come across
in city hotels, which can be
compact, and the large windows
facing the pitch added to the
impression of spaciousness. The
bed with its crisp linen was so
comfortable that I almost dozed
off and missed the rest of the
evening!
our drinks and soaked up the
cracking atmosphere of the
recently refurbished restaurant.
There was a happy mix of
students, families and couples,
all clearly having a wow of a
time. It was also great to see
an open kitchen with its air of
organised chaos and theatre.
After sprucing up in the wellappointed bathroom, we made
the short walk to Headingley’s
main drag. Despite it being a
weekday all the nearby bars
and restaurants were busy. In
this part of town during term
time every day is Saturday!
Peering nosily into the many
packed eateries, I realised
that it had been one of my
better ideas to pre-book the
Sukhothai restaurant, which
is a small group that’s been
creating a big stir in Yorkshire,
thanks to its accomplished,
light cooking and authentic
ingredients flown in weekly
straight from Thailand.
Our meals arrived promptly
and my pad khing stir-fry was
exceptional. It sounds like
something you could easily
recreate at home but, trust me,
this took stir-frying to a whole
new level with fresh beef and
zingy vegetables cooked to
perfection. I’m glad we didn’t
over-indulge in the tempting
array of starters (although we
enjoyed the satay gung - juicy
grilled prawns with peanut
sauce, and the crispy seaweed
rolls) because we found the
main courses to be real beltlooseners!
While I know my way around
a tikka masala or a chop suey,
I have far less experience of
Thai cooking and was glad of
the friendly, attentive service
and the fact that our waitress
took plenty of time to guide
us through the huge maze of a
menu, including old favourites
like pad thai and tom yum
soup plus lesser known treats,
such as soft-shelled crab and
exotic duck curry. For those
who simply can’t face so much
choice, there are also easy set
menus on offer.
After finally narrowing down
the options and making our
decisions we sat back with
www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk
My companion was a vegetarian
but this was no handicap
when the menu offers a host
of vegetable and tofu-based
options that put many other
restaurants to shame. In fact,
the flash-frying technique
is ideally suited to cooking
vegetarian food as it helps
retain all the innate flavour and
crisp texture. Her pad kee mao
pak was a delicious combo of
noodles, Thai basil, mixed veg
and bean-curd with a sharp kick
of the ubiquitous chilli. I could
happily go vegetarian if I could
eat all my meals at Sukhothai.
I defy anyone to tackle dessert
after that meal, however, if
you’re up for a challenge, there
are plenty of familiar favourites

AIRE
BAR
10yEAR ANNIVERSARy
We have an excuse to party
this year... an excuse to do
things that little bit louder...
The Aire bar celebrates 10 years of being at the heart of Leeds. Can you
an excuse to let down our
remember what you were doing 10 years ago?
hair and celebrate.
This year is the Aire Bar’s 10th
birthday, we have been at the
heart of the Leeds bar scene for
10 fantastic years and we are
looking forward to the next 10
too!
Let us take you down memory
lane for a moment. Do you
remember where you were or
what you were doing in 2004?
We do of course. Our visions of
Leeds’ latest and best bar were
coming to fruition. The doors
to the Aire Bar first opened
in 2004. A vintage year that
had many events to remember.
Here’s ten events that we
remember in 2004:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Facebook launches and
goes on to change how we
view the internet.
The very first series of the
x-Factor is aired. Steve
Brookstein (did we just
hear a collective ‘Who?’)
was the inaugural winner.
Greece host the 2004
Olympic Games and Team
GB bring home 30 medals
including 9 golds.
not satisfied with hosting
the Olympic Games,
Greece shock the football
world and win the 2004
European Cup with 1-0 win
over portugal... who’d have
guessed that would have
happened?
5. The F.A. Cup was won
by manchester united by
beating millwall in a 3-0
cup final thriller.
6. Arsenal put football to bed
that year and became the
2003-04 champions.
7. The best selling single of
the year was the charity
chart topper ‘do they
know it’s Christmas - Band
Aid 20’.
8. Britney Spears got hitched
for a grand total of 55
hours.
9. Leeds Rhinos won the
Super League Grand Final
beating the Bradford Bulls
16-8.
10. Shrek 2 was the highest uK
grossing film of the year.
We hope that list jogged your
memory a little.
Our vision of the Aire Bar was
a down to earth friendly bar
that you could call your local
in the heart of Leeds. A place
where you would plan to meet
your mates before setting off
for a night on the town... and
then decide to stay because
the atmosphere was great and
the selection of cask ales even
better. As a beautiful ‘Grade II’
listed building we saw a vision
of lazy summer afternoons
with a terrace over the River
Aire. Great food was central to
our vision to partner our great
independent selection of beers,
cask ales and wines. This year
is culminated in the launch of
our bespoke signature menu
and the ‘yorkshire Burgaire
Company’. Live sport is in our
blood, we are passionate LUFC,
Carnegie and Rhino fans! Live
sport is shown on most days
in the bar and the big screens
are rolled out for those bigger
sporting events.
Our patrons have been the
lifeblood of the Aire Bar over
the years. City workers, Uni
Students, Tourists and Leeds
City Dwellers have all made
opening the Aire Bar each
day a pleasure and an exciting
adventure each day. We are
looking forward to another 10
sublime years of being your
favourite local and sports bar!

EVERyMAN CINEMA
Fletch went along for an
evening of food, film and
ice cold beers to discover an
environment that combines
home comforts with the
magic of cinema and so
much more.
I’ve been a huge film fan since
I was a child, and can still
remember Gremlins hitting
cinemas and being annoyed that
I was too young to go along with
my parents to see it. Instead I
had to make do with the toys
and other memorabilia until the
VHS hit the local video shop. 30
years later, and the film industry
has shifted massively, from
the way films are made, to the
formats they’re released on, and
of course where we watch them.
Everyman Leeds is a breath of
fresh air for the city, and offers
visitors a much more luxurious
cinematic experience that is
unrivalled elsewhere. From the
vintage signage outside, to the
classic film poster wallpaper
inside, Everyman exudes moviestar coolness but doesn’t feel in
the slightest bit pretentious or
contrived.
Fletch gets to review the fantastic Everyman Cinema this month. How did Beer,
Pizza and Burgers get involved in all this? Read on to find out.
tomato sauce (5.00) and Cajun
Calamari, served with mayo
and sweet chilli dip (4.95). Both
were delicious, as were the
accompanying sauces, with the
prawns tipping it ever so slightly
for me.
The Wildboar and Chorizo
Burger (9.50) I had for mains
came with jalapenos and fries,
and I loved how the chorizo
was mixed inside patty itself,
allowing the spicy flavour to
blend perfectly with the juicy
beef. My mate went for the
Messy Burger (8.95), which was
smothered in monetary jack
cheese, relish and mayo. Jules
and Vincent from Pulp Fiction
would highly approve – they
were both darn good tasty
burgers, just like the Big Kahuna.
We washed down the food with
a few bottles of Asahi, before
going upstairs for the film.
Everyman has four screens, and
all are built with comfort in mind.
Filled with spacious, two seated
sofas, covered in cushions, you
can take in pizza, hot dogs,
popcorn or any of the drinks
from their well-stocked bar.
Much like the films Everyman
decides to screen, the drinks
selection is carefully selected
with quality and variety in mind.
After picking up some
more beers, we headed into
the theatre to watch ‘71; a
homegrown picture about a
British soldier stranded in Belfast
amidst a series of violent riots
and bombings. A fictional story
based within the true events of
the much documented troubles
in Ireland during the 70’s, the
film is more of a thriller than
the war drama you may expect.
Left to his own devices and
surrounded by conflict and
angry locals after his blood, the
soldier, played by the brilliant
Jack O’Connell (Starred Up,
Skins) must fight for his life and
find his way home.
By the time you read this, ‘71 will
most likely have ended its run at
the cinema, but seek it out on
DVD if you’ve not already seen
it. Apart from the odd aesthetic
slip-up (there are times you
can spot Sky TV satellite dishes
and modern UPVC doors and
windows in the background),
it’s a brilliant film that keeps you
gripped from the get-go. Having
recently also enjoyed The Guest
and Gone Girl, I feel I’ve had
something off a lucky run at the
cinema of late.
The Everyman show smaller
pictures, such as ‘71, and also
screen the best of the current
Hollywood blockbusters too.
For the more cultured cinema
goer they show Royal Opera
House and National Theatre live
screenings and cult classics. The
little ones are not left out either
with a good showing of kids
movies.
I can’t wait to return next month
to see the next Christopher
Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy,
Inception) epic, Interstellar. If
you’re serious about cinema, you
will love the whole Everyman
experience.
We dined in their restaurant
prior to the film, and it was
refreshing to discover they take
their food as seriously as their
cinema. Although predominantly
a pizzeria, there’s a wide variety
of other dishes to suit all pallets
that sounded too good to pass
on (several of them had also
come highly recommended
by a colleague). We kicked
things off with Prawns in spicy

Imagine, if you will, luxury
state rooms arranged over
two floors and with their own
private balconies. On the most
futuristic ships even the interior
cabins have floor-to-ceiling
‘windows’ which are actually
LED screens showing views
of the ocean and upcoming
destinations. This brings me
to an important point; you
need to work out your budget
and decide if it can run to an
outside or balcony cabin. My
advice would always be to
opt for an outside if you can
afford it, to avoid any feeling
of claustrophobia and take
advantage of the amazing sites
and sunrises as they roll into
view, surely one of the prime
reasons to go on a cruise.
Mind you, with so many
activities on offer you probably
won’t find yourself spending
much time in your cabin,
however luxurious it may be.
Where do I begin? Depending
on the ship you choose there
is almost everything you could
wish for. On the entertainment
front there are live bands,
dancing, themed parties,
all manner of great cabaret
acts plus Broadway-style
theatrical shows. And, just
as on land, you can choose
from an international array of
superb restaurants and cafes,
from Chinese to Italian and all
places in between.
If you feel the need to work
off your meal, there’s a lot
more than just swimming on
offer. Some ships even have
climbing walls and zip-lines!
For the slightly less energetic
there’s mini-golf, yoga, iceskating, health spas and much
more.
I’m happy to discuss all your
requirements and match
you with the perfect cruise.
Perhaps you’ve decided
to take the holiday of a
lifetime and sail to an exotic
destination like the Caribbean
or the Pacific Ocean or even
round the world, there are
many other options closer
to home, including the
Scandinavian fjords with
specialist companies like
Hurtigruten and a chance to
go whale-watching or take
in the spectacular Northern
Lights. The Mediterranean
and the nearby Scottish
Islands also remain popular
destinations. And if time is at a
premium I can always find you
a mini-cruise of just a few days
duration. The choice is yours.

1984 was a stonking year for cinema, with each and every genre
served with classic films that people still hold dear today. The
Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Karate
Kid, Gremlins and Ghostbusters thrilled billions the world over,
and all had sequels or became full on franchises. 30 years on
and the prospect of Ghostbusters 3 seemed promising; until the
director suddenly switched to Bridesmaids director, Paul Feig,
who announced the new film will have ‘hilarious female lead stars’.
So now we’re gonna get a rubbish Hangover rip-off mashed with
Ghostbusters and no doubt a ton of irritating cameos. Who you

Apartment values are rising
and why they have to keep
going up
Back in 2008 apartment
values reached their peak and
ultimately when the market
collapsed, many values and
sales figures dropped to
between 30% and 50% from
what was the price paid precrash.
I am pleased to be a part of
a recovering market now,
with many large commercial
developments coming out
of the ground including
the Victoria Gate retail
development and office
schemes such as Wellington
Place. I am experiencing many
apartment values rising quickly
often to similar levels of value
that represent the original
price paid by the purchasers.
However, this isn’t the case
in every development. Many
values are still much lower than
where they were, although
gradually recovering. This
certainly proves that when
investing location is very
important. Some buildings
command a premium; this can
be because of its character,
specification or even its
outlook.
The city centre sales market is
as buoyant as it has been
for several years and I do
expect this to continue for the
foreseeable future, but this
must come with further price
increases across the market as
a whole.
I wrote a piece for City Dweller
several months back, referring
to why now is the right time to
buy and I think looking forward
is perhaps the best way of
understanding why I strongly
believe this.
Currently, the average sale
prices we experience, represent
approximately £200 per square
foot (there are cases in the
city centre of close to £300
per square foot being achieved
but there are also examples at
less than £150 psf ), As a rough
guide this would mean a two
bedroom 800 square foot flat
is worth around £160,000 on
average. Equally on this basis, a
500 square foot one bedroom
apartment is worth £100,000.
Of course there are then many
variables to factor in where the
location, décor, amenities etc
have an influence on the price.
We look at development
opportunities regularly for our
developer clients and it often
occurs to me that the price
of an average building can be
very easily £75 per square foot
if not higher. Fundamentally
property prices rise due to
the cost of building (whether
new build or conversion) with
inflation, add stamp duty,
VAT, Planning and professional
fees and its easy to add
another £130 per square foot
before the new apartment
is completed. At £205 per
square foot in today’s market
to build a new flat means that
developers would be needing
to achieve a selling price of
£250-£275 per square foot
in order to justify investing
money in to a scheme. Funders
would feel otherwise that the
margin of profit would be too
small to make it worthwhile.
It is obvious that the city
centre certainly has a shortage
of rental stock at present, but
I am also concerned that there
is also a shortage of quality
sales stock available (both
new and re sale). Due to this
lack of stock, high demand
for the low supply is forcing
sales and rental prices upwards
and I think that we are likely
to see this continued demand
and competition for quality
properties, forcing the prices
upwards further for at least the
foreseeable future.
There is already a severe
shortage of supply and yet
no developers are actually on
site with a major residential
scheme in Leeds. It will only
be once the market has shown
capital values increase by a
further 20% that we will see
new residential developments
coming out of the ground and
this may be upon on sooner
than people thought!

I do feel sexual health is a
very important subject for
everyone to think about. Sex
is permanently thrust in our
faces these days - on TV, in the
papers, everywhere really. So,
I thought a quick run-down of
common infections and what
to look for would be useful.
These include chlamydia,
gonorrhoea, herpes, genital
warts, syphilis and of course
HIV. They can present in
a variety of ways from
discomfort and discharge,
blisters and ulcers, to non

Cool down: Nearly every athlete
will start their session with a warm
up. This is great for getting your
heart rate up and your muscles
warm for your session. Just as
important as warming up is
cooling down after a session. 10-15
minutes is all it takes and could
simply consist of a simple jog
followed by some static stretches.
This is to ensure that your body
remains limber and aims to reduce
pain and stiffness in your muscles
ready for your next session.
Avoiding injuries: Don’t try to
do too much too soon. Slowly
increase the time and intensity
of your sessions both on the
track and in the gym. Sprained
ligaments and strained muscles
often result from poor technique.
Make sure you learn the correct
technique before you start
increasing the intensity of your
training. Last but certainly not
least, if you get injured – DO NOT
TRy AND TRAIN THROUGH IT.
Rest and recover before you
continue your training.
The use of all sorts of equipment:
Along with your session on
the track, try and incorporate
some multi-functional dynamic
exercises into your training.
Equipment such as medicine
balls, Swiss balls and kettle bells
are a great way of mixing training
sessions up. This will introduce
diagonal and rotational actions
as well as unilateral exercises into
your training, which essential in
preventing injuries.
Coping with ‘Lactic Acid’:
Every athlete will no doubt have
experienced lactic acid at some
point in their training. All though
there is no getting away from
lactic acid, there are ways to help
reduce the ‘burning sensation’
during and after training. Stay
hydrated during your session.
Lactic acid is water soluble,
so the more hydrated you are,
the less likely you are to feel a
burn while you train and cause
lactic acid build up. Stretch your
muscles lightly after intense
exercise. Another tip is to use your
fingertips to massage the area
gently. This will also decrease any
muscle stiffness and will help your
muscles repair for your session
the following day.

Sleep: Sleep is essential to any
athlete. Try and aim for an average
of 8-10 hours’ sleep per night. For
the best quality of sleep, try and
get to sleep before 11pm. Also try
not to watch any TV or go on the
computer 30 minutes before you
go to bed.

pain. Sometimes there are few
symptoms. In gonorrhoea for
example up to 50% of women
and 10% of men may have no

The speed of onset is also
variable from days to months

FEBRUARy
LEEDS FIRST DIRECT ARENA
The Script have announced
the much anticipated news
that their fans have been
eagerly awaiting. In February
2015, the Irish three piece will
kick off an UK arena tour that
will include Leeds First Direct
Arena.
Putting their music in a genre
bucket is no mean feat...
mixing a range of styles from
celtic soul, hip hop, pop and
anthemic rock! With a lively
energetic stage performance
this will be a gig you shouldn’t
miss.
The Script are an Irish pop
rock band that formed in
2001. The band consists of
lead vocalist & pianist Danny
O’Donoghue, vocalist &
guitarist Mark Sheehan, and
drummer Glen Power.
Based in London after signing
to Phonogenic, the band
released their eponymous
debut album in August 2008,
featuring the hit songs “The
Man Who Can’t Be Moved”
and “Breakeven (Falling to
Pieces)”. The album peaked
at number one in Ireland and
the UK.
Their second album, Science
& Faith, was released in
September 2010, and contains
the hit songs “For the First
Time” and “Nothing”. The
album peaked at number one
in Ireland and the UK.

Their third album, #3, peaked
at number one in Ireland and
the UK, containing the hit song
“Hall of Fame”, in collaboration
with hip hop artist will.i.am.
In 2014, they released their
fourth album No Sound
Without Silence which,
again, peaked at number one
and spawned the hit single
“Superheroes”.
Danny O’Donoghue and Mark
Sheehan have been best
friends since they were 12
growing up in Dublin. Sheehan
and O’Donoghue were
formerly part of a boy band
called Mytown, which had
formed in 1996. Striking up a
songwriting and production
partnership, they were invited
to Canada to collaborate with
some of their heroes, including
Dallas Austin, Montell Jordan
and Teddy Riley.They were in
the US for a few years and
had a record deal until the
company dropped them.
They stayed in Los Angeles
and worked there as
producers, writing and
producing songs for
performers including Britney
Spears, Boyz II Men and TLC,
but later moved back to
Dublin, where they recruited
drummer Glen Power for their
new band the Script.
Power learned to play drums
when he was just eight and
he had been playing sessions
from the age of 15, using
the money to work on a
solo project in his home, but
that went on hold when his
collaboration with Sheehan
and O’Donoghue produced
three songs in one week. The
band signed to Phonogenic in
2005, and released an EP on
Last.FM. The band’s influences
include Snow Patrol, U2,
Coldplay, the Police, the
Neptunes, Timbaland, and Van
Morrison.

11 December - 20 December 2014
Christmas wouldn’t be the same without Northern Ballet at Leeds Grand
Theatre. This year they take you to Neverland for a magical adventure with
the boy who never grew up.
See breathtaking flying as Wendy, John and Michael soar into the night sky
with Peter to a magical land of mermaids and fairy dust where children can
fly and adventures happen every day. But beware, danger is just around the
corner - Captain Hook and his pirates are looking for revenge and Peter Pan
is top of their list.
With stunning dancing, a spectacular set by Olivier-award winning designer
Peter Mumford and music by Oscar-winning composer Stephen Warbeck
(Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliot), played live by Northern ballet Sinfonia,
this is one of the Company’s most magical productions.
MAgIC OF MOTOWN - LEEDS TOWN hALL
Friday 12 December 2014 - 7.45pm (Box Office: 0113 224 3801)
Celebrating 50 years of UK number one hit singles, the Magic of Motown brings its brand-new
2014 REACH OUT® Tour to Leeds. Songs like Dancing in the Street, My Girl, Where Did Our
Love Go, My Guy and Baby Love rocketed Motown to the top of the singles charts in 1964, says
show producer Michael Taylor.
“Incredibly, 100 more Motown No1s followed worldwide,” he says. “The Magic of Motown
2014 Reach Out Tour brings to the stage 36 of these chart toppers back-to-back in one
critically-acclaimed production.” Direct from the USA, The Magic of Motown promises five-star
performances that will authentically revive the style and sophistication of everyone’s favourite
Motown legends. Classic hits from the Temptations, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder,
Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and The Supremes are packed into the two-hour spectacular. In 1964 Motown crossed the Atlantic to become a musical
phenomenon on these shores. The labels’ touring concert show, the Motown Revue starring Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations,
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, (Little) Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross and the Supremes, paved the way for Motown’s chart-storming success
in the UK. That year the UK singles charts were peppered with Motown songs. To mark the occasion, The Magic of Motown brings an all-new
production for 2014 to the stage with a 100-date nationwide tour.

visitors can climb the windy clock tower for a unique view of
the twinkly city below, before heading south to discover an
unexpected enchanted forest beneath the bustling streets of
Leeds. The Wood Beneath the World is a large-scale, magical
forest environment in the basement rooms and corridors of the
Town Hall, which has been growing, silently, for decades. A festive
experience like no other! Open from 15 November 2014.
Shop like a pro
Leeds was recently named third
best city in the UK for shopping,
and it’s no wonder why. With over
1,000 shops, its exceptionally
diverse retail offer includes
high-end designer boutiques
in the Victoria Quarter, quirky
independents at Leeds Corn
Exchange and The Light, and all
the brand favourites in Trinity
Leeds. It’s also one of the most
compact city centres in the UK,
designed for efficient Christmas
shoppers, and is full of covered
arcades and shopping centres to
keep shoppers warm and dry. Late
night shopping runs from 14th
November at Trinity Leeds, Monday
to Friday 9am – 9pm, and as of
15th – 23rd December, 9am – 10pm.

overnight stay
With so much to organise at Christmas, it’s easy to forget that it’s
the most magical time of year to spend with family, friends and
loved ones. A short break to Leeds this festive season promises
magical memories, with fun-filled entertainment, romantic meals
and fun shopping trips. Visitors can pick from an abundance of
fantastic hotels in the heart of Leeds city centre, including The
Met Hotel, The Queens and Bewleys who are all offering special
Christmas packages with Visit Leeds including 50% off room rates

Leeds has a superb programme of entertainment across a
number of venues in the lead up to Christmas, perfect for an
inspiring theatre break. Northern Ballet, West yorkshire Playhouse
and Carriageworks, all in the city centre, have a number of
exciting seasonal performances on the bill. Northern Ballet,
which was recently named Best Ballet Company in Europe at the
Taglioni Awards, will debut a very special version of Peter Pan
between 11-20 December at The Grand, while West yorkshire
Playhouse is showing White Christmas (24 Nov – 17 Jan) and
the heart-warming James and the Giant Peach (5 Dec – 24 Jan).
Carriageworks has a schedule of Christmas classics, including
Cinderella (21-22 Nov), Scrooge (27-29 Nov) and Snow White (5
Dec – 10 Jan).
Tis the season to party
Be sure to check out the winter
line-up at first direct Arena, with
John Bishop, WWE Live, Jack White,
Kasabian, James Blunt, Bryan Adams,
The Who, Alfie Boe, Michael Bublé
and Andre Rieu all taking to the stage
in November and December to offer
something for everyone this winter
season.
Kick-start your
Christmas spirit with candlelit
concerts
Internationally-acclaimed Opera North presents a packed season
of international performance and special one-off events this
Christmas, including film, jazz, folk, world music, vocal recitals
and chamber music. The perfect scene for a wonderland of wintry
music, The Nutcracker / Snowman double bill is a must-see at
Leeds Town Hall on 21 December, and Christmas at Twilight at the
holly-decked Howard Assembly Room on 19 December.
Meander round magical markets
A sparkling antidote to high street shopping, festive markets
are round every corner in Leeds this season. Millennium Square
is taken over by the atmospheric Christkindelmarkt between
14 Nov – 21 Dec, and the
main pedestrianised high
street, Briggate, hosts the
popular Farmers and Crafts
market every weekend in
December. Head down to the
cosmopolitan Leeds Dock
for an alternative market
experience on 6-7 December,
with vintage clothing stalls,
street food vans, craft ale bars
and live music, with a fantastic
waterfront location thrown in.
Trade Lapland for Leeds
you don’t need to go to Lapland this year for a true Christmas
experience. Stockeld Park’s award-winning Christmas Adventure
guarantees a memorable day out for the whole family. New
this year is a 4D Cinematic Sleigh Sensation Experience, an
imaginative journey visitors will never forget. Open 15 Nov – 24

SyN
gIRLS JUST WANNA hAVE FUN!
City and Student Dweller Writer, Beautician and Party girl gets the girls together for a
night of fun at one of Leeds’ favourite club venues SYN. Cocktails, VIP Lounge treatment
and a club night to remember.
Saturday night in the city of
Leeds and three girls need
to get out and let their hair
down. Where to go and
avoid the curse of generic
weekend nights out?
I got the girls together and we
decided on SyN in Leeds City
Centre. We’d heard plenty about it
and we wanted to go full ten yards!
Private VIP Booth for a proper
girlie night out. The girls and I got
glammed up, we were ready to
party and nothing was going to
get in our way.
We all hooked up at Chilli Whites
on Assembly Street, a great
meeting point, before heading to
SyN. It was TABOO night at Chilli
White, it was brilliant, and you are
guaranteed to have a great night
there.
We were eager to get to the main
event... SyN. No taxi needed...
straight across the cobbled street,
right opposite Chilli White, SyN
beckons us.
The club oozes atmosphere. With
two huge rooms both pumping
out their own sounds with an extra
room for the VIP’s... yeah that’s us!
Getting that special VIP treatment
really makes a difference to a
night out. Table service and no
queuing at the bar!
SyN have a variety of packages
to meet the needs of any group,
be it a small party of cheeky girls
44 | City Dweller Magazine
all agree with me on that point.
Syn is exactly what the girls and I
needed; a unique and refreshing
club atmosphere that makes it
stand out from all the competition.
If you are tired of the ‘same old
same old’ club scene and fancy
somewhere different; I recommend
you get glammed up, meet the
girls at Chilli White and let your
hair down at SyN.
like us or a corporate night out
for a large company. This includes
packages for drinks that would
meet everyone’s tastes.
The decor is simple but stylish and
the club’s split room layout over
2 floors allows you to roll with a
bass-thumping dance floor or opt
for a more chilled area in the barcentric area.
We needed to dance before
settling in to the VIP room. The
beats were spot on! An amazing
mixture of chart sounds, R&B and

House. The resident DJ’s made us
feel like we could dance all night...
and we wanted to! Non-stop club
sounds that had everyone lifted
to a type of audible nirvana. We
found it hard to leave the dance
floor. However, another round of
cocktails took precedence.
There are some real bargains
on drinks with pre-made jam jar
cocktails for only £4. They even
make my all-time favourite cocktail
- Purple Rain! If cocktails aren’t
your scene they also offer some
great deals on shots, bombs and
as well ‘Skyy’ vodka. One of the
few places in Leeds that offer this
connoisseur vodka. So not only
is the atmosphere great but with
these deals you aren’t going to
break the bank either.
It was refreshing to find all the
SyN staff friendly, professional
and courteous. We felt safe and
comfortable knowing that the staff
promoted a safe party atmosphere
and that if we had any questions or
problems we were sure they would
be at hand to help. They all seem
to be expert cocktail mixologists
too!

ROB
ChADWICK’S
CLUB & gIg
gUIDE
Our man Rob Chadwick is back
with his pick of the best club nights
and gigs in Leeds for the month of
November.
So november is upon us
and we have one eye and
Christmas and festivities but
not to dwell to much on next
month just yet. The month of
Guy Fawkes has an incredible
array of talent stemming
from all genres of the music
forefront.
Starting off at everyones
favourite hang out Distrikt,
DJ Sprinkles arrives on 14th.
The Comatonse hitter arrives
to perform alongside local
spinners Bobby O’Donnell
and Haydn Porter. On 15th
Red Bull Music Academy
return to the city at Canal
Mills with a five pronged
attack; Moodymann, John
Talabot, George Fitzgerald,
Erol Alkan and Daniel Avery
all headline.
If legendary acts are you’re
tipple then look no further
than Hip-hop funny man
Mos Def arriving to play his
‘Black On Both Sides’ 15th
anniversary tour. Just a
stones throw away at First
Direct Arena, Kasabian front
the bill hot on the back of
their hugely successful 48:13
album. My personal pick of
the month is the return of
James on 23rd showcasing
their new album La Petite
Mort. The band have sold
over 12 million albums and
surely Sit Down and Shes
a Star will be met by a
rapturous applaud.
Over at the trendy Belgrave
Music Hall, High and
Lonesome Festival arrives
for the first time on 22nd
teaming with The Trinity
Church and Oporto. Patrick
Wolf and Rachel Sermanni
top the bill. Finally Vermont
storyteller Anais Mitchell jets
in to curate her tour. Hotly
tipped as one to watch she
will perform her latest tracks
at ever present Brudnell
Social Club. Dutch stalwart
Joris Voorn also arrives on
22nd at The Mint Club with
local Josh butler in support.
Back to Basics will also
celebrate their 23rd birthday.
Dave Beer and his brigade
of trusty residents will play
Beaverworks on 29th and
with the line up yet to be
announced its still not one to
be missed.
Of course I haven’t forgotten
the little addition we all love,
The German Market which
starts on 14th November.
Well worth a few early steins
before the aforementioned
gigs start.
A green
Christmas?
You’ve all seen the Leeds arena,
right? I’m sure you will agree it’s
a class establishment, inside and
out, putting Leeds on the map
in terms of venues.
The bright lights that illuminate
the exterior were a very Irish
shade of green the other night,
all in aid of an Aer Lingus launch
party. I was given a glimpse into
the Irish way of life, and I’ll admit
the mixture of Irish whisky and
champagne provided somewhat
of a sore head the following day.
However the Irish lamb stew was
a triumph! Perhaps this calls for
a trip to Dublin next St. Paddy’s
Day, which is all too easy now
the airline fly direct from Leeds
Bradford!
Hill is performing. She’s had
some huge hits this year with
Wilkinson, Oliver Heldens and
Rudimental, so make sure you
get down to see her live.
Secondly, Capital Breakfast’s
JoJo and I will be taking over
Pryzm on Saturday 6 December
for a very special, not to mention
festive, Club Capital. JoJo’s
promising to get some of her
very favourite disco tracks out,
so come down and grab a drink
with us!
Christmas is fast approaching,
which means the return of
Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with
Morrisons. For all the latest
gossip and info, head to
Capitalfm.com.
Come say hey on twitter:
@AdamOnCapital
Party season is properly kicking
in now. It’s a month of morning
after guilt, followed by the
realisation that you’ve got to do
it all again that night. Who am I
kidding? I love it really, so much
so you’ll be able to catch me
DJing at a couple of cool club
nights coming up. Firstly I’ll be at
one of the newest nights in the
city on Saturday 23 November.
