They have carved a great reputation of being a captivating and entertaining live band in America and abroad. From an early age, the sisters sang and played traditional Irish music as their mother’s back-up band in Ireland and across Europe. When they hit their teenage years, they formed their own rock band -- the Screaming Orphans. They have always admired the diversity of the American music scene and that was instrumental in their decision to relocate to America. Living in New York City has inspired them to explore new and exciting song writing and performance concepts that reflect their Celtic roots but crosses many cultural boundaries. And if you’re wondering about the band’s name… when the sisters decided to start their own band, and their mother no longer was the lead singer and their father the manager, they became “orphans.” And they “scream” for attention in the music industry and to be heard by each other. S ince 2001 the band Ice Wagon FLU has created a fun mixture of genre bending world music pop, which has solidified a growing cult following and insured a place in Indy rock. Their songs are both radio friendly and underground comedic, making them at home in any Irish Pub or funk dance hall. Seamus Kennedy The hardest working superstar in the whole business is the irrepressible Seamus Kennedy, who seems to have the energy of ten men. The craic has never been better and it is in the good hands of Seamus Kennedy. ~ Shay Clarke, Irish American News, November 2008. S eamus Kennedy has been entertaining audiences all over the United States for almost four decades. An accomplished guitarist with a ready wit and a vast store of songs, he travels the country performing for thousands of people each year. A multiple WAMMIE award-winner (the prestigious Washington Area Music Association Awards) for “Best IrishMale Vocalist”, Seamus appreciates the fact that the recognition comes from his fellow performers and musicians, although he doesn’t place much importance in awards and ceremonies. Page 2 P ut together by Banjo player Jim Phelan from Stradbally in Co. Laois, The ShamRogues have proven themselves very popular in Maryland, with an ever-growing group of supporters on the Irish pub scene in the Baltimore area. Not a band to stand around on stage blasting out song after song, The ShamRogues like to involve their audience in a fun, lively evening of songs and stories of Ireland, and God help anyone who forgets to clap along !!! F B urning Bridget Cleary took form on St. Patty's day of '06 when Genevieve Gillespie joined forces with the father-daughter duo, Lou and Rose Baldino. The combination sparks a blaze of Celtic sound that is perceived way beyond the sum of its parts! The girls front the band with their fiery fiddles, bringing a lively flair of youthful intensity and exuberance to traditional tunes. Lou‘s guitar bestows the dynamic rhythm and bass end, tastefully embellished with distinctive chording. Canadian native, Peter Trezzi, completes this compelling combination with the beat of the African djembe. K ilmaine Saints were shaped in 2009 when members of the Lochiel Emerald Society Pipes and Drums (Harrisburg, PA) shared a desire to hear a harder brand of Celtic rock in the area. A musical group that is equal parts Irish Swagger, Scottish Pride and whiskey, this explosive, high-energy Celtic rock band will lift your hearts, your spirits, and your pint when you’re not looking. Having released their first CD in July 2010, the band and their music have met great reviews. P rounced “Tipsy,” the Traditional Irish Pub Song Club was founded as a way for friends to get together to learn and sing Irish pub songs. J ames Gallagher singer/ songwriter from County Donegal Ireland had been on the music scene in Ireland for many years before his 1995 American debut at Shenanigan’s Irish Pub in Ocean City, MD and James Gallagher has been captivating audiences with his energetic, set em’ up, knock ‘em down shows. Gallagher joined by his band, Off the Boat is the music of Ireland. From sing-a-longs that celebrate the camaraderie of raising a pint with friends to the tender ballads of the heart they will get people out of their seats, on the dance floor, and asking for One More Song! As their loyal and ever-growing fan base can attest, when they are on stage, the only thing that won‘t take you by surprise is how much fun you're having. MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT ormed in 2006, The Rovers have taken the Celtic music scene by storm thanks to an eclectic mix of traditional roots and blazing instrumentals with an amped up rock twist. Their musicianship and show is nothing short of high octane. Their fan base is continually expanding and covers people of all ages from all walks of life. The Rovers are fronted by Ray Murphy (lead guitar) from Dublin, Ireland and backed by Jenn Garmen (fiddle), Eddie McGowan (bass and bagpipes), Jim Martin, (percussion), and drummer Garet Howard. They are sure to keep you on edge until the final track has been played. Irish-American communities. “Our mission is to pass on the tradition of Irish dance, teach the basics of dance and the music it is danced to and to have fun while we learn,” school director W. Sean Culkin, TCRG, said. While competition is not the sole focus of the Culkin School, dancers from the school have won 21 regional championship titles in both individual and team dance competitions and, since its inception, the school has qualified dozens dancers for the World Irish Dance Championships. The Culkin School’s adult dance team won the 2009 North American Irish Dance Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, and in February 2010 traveled to and placed in the All Ireland Championships in Killarney, Ireland. For more information, visit the Culkin School’s website at www.culkinschool.com. T he Broesler School of Irish Dance, under the direction of Kevin Broesler, is recognized as one of the leading Irish Dance schools in the United States. Broesler School dancers have competed and won awards at regional, national, and international competitions. They have danced at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and the Meyerhoff with renowned musicians, including The Chieftains and Eileen Ivers, the fiddler of Riverdance fame. They have also danced throughout the Baltimore/Annapolis/D.C. area at various festivals and cultural events, at weddings and other celebrations, and at many local churches and retirement/ nursing homes. The Broesler dancers are grateful for all of these opportunities to share their love of Irish dance and culture. We are a non profit organization that is committed to Developing Gaelic Games in the Baltimore area and providing a healthy social outlet for our members and friends. The club welcomes anyone with an interest in Gaelic sports; no experience is necessary. We offer games for men, women, and co-ed participation. The Baltimore GAA also fields a Men's Football Team and a Women's Football Team that compete against clubs from all over the country. Additionally, as interest grows, the Baltimore GAA would like to offer competitive teams in Camogie and Hurling. The Baltimore GAA is also dedicated to helping out in the local community. About Gaelic Games: Gaelic Games are the ancient Irish sports of Gaelic Football, Hurling, & Camogie. History states that the Gaelic Athletic Association, or the GAA, was officially founded in a hotel in County Tipperary in 1884. However, these games were played well before this date and there is reference made to these games in Irish Folklore. Teams were, and are still today, organized by locality. This meant that competition was for love of town and village and was thus very fierce. Time has not dulled this competitive spirit as today’s games are as fiercely contested. It is no wonder that Gaelic Games are Ireland’s national pastime. In the US, Gaelic Games are played in many cities under the guidance of the North American County Board. Page 12
