Dr. Olivas
Her 40 Years of Humble
Academic Service
"While the boat is sailing, I
am proud to say that I keep
the fire burning,”
A
sight from the starting
line where the end remains unseen makes it
hard for or feet to start
the race. It’s a leap in the dark
but you’ll never see the finish
unless you start one step, to be
followed by another and another,
and another until it won’t want to
stop.
Dr. Lourdes C. Olivas,
recipient of the loyalty award for
40 years, narrates her story that is
built within the long winding
years. On what made her ingrain
her roots in our university, she
proudly answered.
“I have stayed in URS for
forty years for nit made me feel
that teaching is a vocation. From
the Latin word “vocare” which
means to call and at the same
time a mission from the Latin
word “mission” which means to
send. I believe, I am the one being called and sent to this prestigious university which I love the
most for I am an Alumna of the
then Morong High School now
University of Rizal System. Besides, I feel that this university is
giving me the best opportunities.”
Definitely, mud and dirt
will blur the visions and hindrances will either slow us down
or completely take us down. But
she never chose to succumb to
the latter.
“Normally, in saying
there are “ups” and “downs”
but I consider my sailing career, first, as a smooth one or
“ups” due to the ever supportive and indefatigable administrators and staff; value-laden, talented, understanding and cooperative instructors and professors
due to the inquisitive yet lovable
students. Second, there are failures or downs or shortcomings
that I have to overcome. While
the boat is sailing, I am proud to
say that I keep the fire burning,”
Dr. Olivas summarized on what
her career has been on the surface.
Highest and steepest
mountains or widest and deepest
seas, the most courageous voyager will find a way to surpass them
all with a body equipped with the
scars of trials. Meanwhile, on the
smoothest roads never stops in
giving it all.
“As a sojourner in this
university, I could not find the
easiest part except saying “Hi”,
“Hello,” “Kumusta”. But still, I
have to exert effort in greeting
and giving my winsome smiles.
On the other hand, the difficult
part for me is tine management
especially beating the deadlines
of the required report. I consider
tine management difficult yet enjoyable because of the subsidiary of my colleagues. More so, it lightens my
difficulties for I love teaching.”
And as every action has
an equal and opposite reaction,
her work ethics and hard work
are always rewarded by God’s
grace and the University as well.
The most rewarding among her
students numerous is when her
students passed the Licensure and
NC examinations given by PRC
and TESDA. More so, when the
students win in different contests
in different levels of competition
and especially when students performed the 4R’s – Reading, writing, arithmetic and Right attitude.
She wants the trails of her
quadri-decade walk to be remembered with this statement “if St.
Jerome’s remembered as a translator of the Bible from Hebrew to
Latin; for Rizal, his love for his
country and countrymen. For me,
I want to be remembered just as a
simple human being – valuing
love, humility and magnanimity,”
Dr. Olivas humbly ended.
istinguished
ean’s
istinct Story
Character
is what makes you over-all great as
person, but how you show it and rub it
to others is what makes our featured
administrator fully distinguished.
“Have a clear vision
on what you want the College to be
and a strong mission understanding
why the College exist. Having a high
degree of competency is an edge coupled with strong interpersonal relations. Likewise, creation of strong
team with experience and equally capable to supplement the organizational
performance made the difference. Be
confident and inspire others to contribute towards common goal.” stated
Mr. Allan Conde, the recipient of the
Distinguished Administrator Award
on this year’s PRAISE, on what it
takes to be distinct.
Spending 21 years
of government service as a public
school teacher, Sir Conde proves that
time just doesn’t pass. It moulds him
to the very man he is today- a dignified role model and a highly- respected
administrator.
The secret to his
awards though came from the multiple
positions he’s been in – positions
where he gave his heart and soul to the
betterment of every area. Each one
contributed to his administrative experiences and tremendous leadership.
He served as Dean
of College of Industrial Technology,
Director of Special Programs and Projects and Resource Generation, Head
of Science and Technology Researches, Director of Institute of Continuing
Education, Institute Coordinator of
Institute of Industrial Technology.
Also he was appointed as Chairman of
Electrical, Electronics and Drafting
Department, Program Coordinator
of Bachelor of Technology
and Three-Year
Engineering
Technology Program,
Discipline
Head of Career Education Development Program, Area Coordinator of Electronics
Technology.
His projects and
developments are very much unmatched as he implemented and spearheaded Embracing the hearing impaired in the Two – Year Certificate in
Computer Operations, Offering of
Biomedical Technician Course for
regular students, Assessors/Trainors
Methodology Course for URS Technology Experts, Establishment of the
Mechatronics Innovation and Training
"Be confident and inspire
others to contribute towards common goal.”
Center.
Add up to his shelf
of achievements the seminars he attended and lead where he carried the
prestigious name of the GIANTS, in
our home country or overseas. He was
once appointed as the Vice Delegation
Leader of the Skills Training Program
of CHED and Temasek Foundation at
Nanyang Polytechnic International in
Singapore. He has unselfishly rendered
expert services in various activities,
seminars, conferences, workshops and
short term courses as lecturer, panel
member, resource speaker, judge, facilitator, coach, presenter and project
inspector in different levels.
Extensionwise, call
of educational duties brought his ser-
vice-minded soul to reach out the fences of our University. He served as an
arm of the University for On-the JobTraining in Malaysia. And for three
consecutive years, he worked as the
Project Manager of DepEd’s Skills
Enhancement Program for the TechVoc Teachers obtaining a whopping
100% passing rate in TESDA’s Competency Assessment. Also, he actively
and voluntarily involved himself in
various civic and non-government
organizations as organizer, project
coordinator, sponsor, resource speaker,
commissioner, panel member, trainer
and adviser.
The
prominent
plaque he received was only one of his
achievements this PRAISE, the Best
College award given to College of
Industrial Technology is attributable to
him as well as he was the heas and
the mind behind the award- attaining
college. And the secret is...
“Make the people believe
that they are part of the team contributory to the set goals and objectives of the College being the tradition of excellence in technology education and technical manpower development. Let them feel your passion
for excellence as a leader and they
will do their part next towards it. Empower others to achieve a task or
sometimes overcome a challenge. Inspire them to dream, learn, act and
become one.”
Undoubtedly,
his
repertoire summed up to a very outstanding resume up to a very outstanding resume but like everything that
fades away, he aims to leave a mark
that will forever fill the halls of our
beloved university.
On how he wants to
be remembered, he put the period in
our interview with a heart-felt testimony “About the steps I started, I want to
be remembered as to my contributions
that nurture the minds and touches the
heart.
