Neighbors, for our spring
clean-up project, instead of a
main focus being along the RR
tracks, or one of the park areas,
we decided to choose an area
within the internal confines of our
neighborhood.
Since Willow
Spring Road is probably the main
point of entry into St. Helena… it
became an easy choice. We
started the morning with about 65
volunteers representing various initiatives with the ‘Clean-Stream Initiative’. We met at our community
building for breakfast… then at 9:00 we separated into various groups that would focus on different areas
around Dundalk. About 25 volunteers stayed behind for Willow Spring Road. We chose 2 starting points. (1)
Ten people started at our sign on Dundalk Avenue and Willow Spring Road. (2) Ten people started at the
American Legion on Dunbar Road… and headed toward Willow Spring Road. And a few canvassed the
neighborhood in search of any bulk items that needed to be removed.
Along Willow Spring Road ALL trash was picked up from the gutters as well as from adjacent
properties. Gutters were swept as well as shoveled. Items as small as gum wrappers were
removed. My guess is that hundreds of plastic bags were removed from hedging and various shrubberies. At
about 11:30 am, the 2 groups met near the old Odd Fellows building. Along the route, countless bags of trash
had been set in the street for pick-up. Willow Spring Road looked really nice… a PROUD entrance to our
neighborhood.
But Wait…there’s MORE…
The very next day (a Sunday), Dolores, (a neighbor residing on Cleveland Avenue) observed a bottle in
the gutter. She stopped pick it up in an effort to maintain the effort from the previous day. She decided to go
the entire length of Willow Spring Road to see if any other items were ‘discarded’ by dis-respectful people.
(Here it is… ) Dolores came upon 2 plastic trash cans that had been dumped, (I mean ‘placed’) at the end of
Willow Spring Road near the RR tracks. One had just regular trash spilling out of it. She removed the lid from
the 2nd can to peer inside… and almost fainted from the stench as well as the contents. The can was half full of
some type of gray liquid muck and BONES. LOTS of bones. LARGE bones. Duane and I went to
investigate. The bones had no meat on them… we were at a loss. I called the police. It appeared that the bones
were likely animal. On Monday I had a hazardous waste unit pick up the finding that some ______e. dumped.
(SO TOTALLY DISRESPECTFUL)
But Wait…there’s MORE…
Also on our clean-up day, there was a private initiative to clean up the alley that’s shared between
Patapsco Avenue and St. Helena Avenue. A notice of this project was placed at every address that shares the
alley.. Inviting all to join in and help to spruce up the area. WE had pledged that as soon as the Willow Spring
Road Clean-up was completed, some of those volunteers would join the neighbors for this ‘alley’ effort. So….
Guess how many additional neighbors stepped outside their back door to help clean up their own alley. Are you
ready? Sitting Down?
None.
Let me repeat that NONE. Now please don’t get me wrong. I know that
some people work on Saturday, I know that many of our neighbors are elderly, I know that various other
hindrances apply as well such as other things on our schedules, or sickness, aching muscles… and so many
other issues that we all have from time to time. But I can’t help but to think that there had to be quite a few able
bodied people who were sitting in front of their tv on the morning of the clean-up…without a care in the world.
If you’re one of them, then in my opinion you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

OK… You’ve been asking for it:
A FLEA-MARKET event in St. Helena!!!!!!!! As many of you may recall,
we sponsored a flea-market at our community building for several years. After a while
it got kinda ‘stale’. We weren’t getting many outside customers. Shirley has contacted
Rev. Gudmundson at the First Baptist Church of Dundalk (Dundalk Ave and St. Helena
Ave). Rev Gudmundson and the members have kindly consented to allow us to use
their property to host a flea-market where it will be visible to many who travel Dundalk
Ave and/or Willow Spring Road. A few of us then went to the property to assess the
best layout. WELLLLL it seems that the parking lot that faces Dundalk Avenue would
NOT be the best place for vendors. It’s small and the grassy areas are somewhat hilly.
So we’re going to use the back grassy lot that is along Willow Spring Road.
Here’s what the event will consist of:
 We’ll be able to sell 50 spaces for 10.00 each.
 Spaces will have a front area of about 12 feet.
 Almost all spaces are in the sun. You are invited to bring a 10x10 canopy or beach umbrella for shade.
 You must bring your own tables/chairs (none will be lent out).
 Vendors may not sell food.
 St. Helena will sell hotdogs/soda/water/coffee/donuts/bagels/chips.
 You will be assigned a spot number. Be sure to indicate if you want a spot next to a friend’s spot.
 You may begin setting up at 7 am. The advertised start time is 8:00 am, with the end time being 2 pm.
 At 7 am you may drive onto the grassy area from the back entrance of the church to very quickly unload
your vehicle. You may then park your car on the church FRONT LOT. Please do NOT park on Willow
Spring Road or on the 100 block of St. Helena Ave. Please reserve these areas for our customers that we
desperately want to please. If shoppers have nowhere to park they’ll keep driving. Limited parking
will be allowed for CUSTOMERS ONLY at the Willow Spring Road back entrance to the church.
 Unfortunately, there will be no rain date for this event.
 Reservations for a space can be made by calling Joe at 410-285-5658.

New Police Captain in Dundalk (Capt. Orlando Lilley)
This spring Captain Orlando was assigned as our new captain at the North Point station. Dundalk is a
new area for him, so in an effort to get to know the community a bit better, he has made a commitment to meet
all neighborhood leaders and walk some of the streets to personally see the areas and possibly take note of any
trouble spots. So with this in mind, Capt. Orlando was introduced to St. Helena just a few weeks ago. Joining
us for our initial meeting then walk through were: Several officers, detectives, Councilman Crandall and some
of his staff, George, Mary, Joe and Shirley, and a few residences that we picked up along the way. Our meeting
was GOOD, and we have every reason to be totally optimistic about future relationships with our new captain.
Capt. Orlando did stress the importance of Citizens on Patrol in our neighborhoods…. So as a neighborhood
we’ll need to discuss any options that we may want to pursue. As a side note: I had to chuckle to myself as a
known addict shouted across the street that it’s about time ’something’ gets done around here. (Some people
just don’t have a clue)

I Think I want to try Something:
Every once in a blue moon… we may get an anonymous letter complaining that we (associations) don’t
do anything. I always tend to think that if someone is afraid to sign a letter, then the letter may not be worth
our time. However…. Let’s try this. I’m sure you can read my feelings of disgust into the ‘clean-up’ articles.
What are your suggestions on how we can improve our neighborhood? This time… let’s absolutely be
anonymous. No signatures please!!!. Send in suggestions now. Then over the summer, possibly we can
review and evaluate to see if there is a new way to approach issues. PLEASE don’t just tell us what’s wrong
w/the area… tell us how you think issues of trash, dirty alleys, dirty streets, dumping can be improved. What
needs to happen to make our streets/alleys look better???? Some of you have GOT to have thoughts on this.
I’m not talking about crime… that’s another whole initiative… I’m talking about the appearance of St. Helena.
Where is our pride? Send letters to: Joe Stadler… 226 Detroit Avenue. (DON’T SIGN THEM)
Ok one more thing: Don’t waste your time or mine if you’re only going to complain… the letter will be
trashed… I want good solid suggestions that our associations can actually discuss.
OH and know what …One MORE thing. Some people tend to forget that we are VOLUNTEERS. No one earns
a paycheck for organizing clean-ups, national night out, various community events, dumpster days, Red Rocket
Review newsletters, maintaining e-mail trees, Next Door St. Helena, and Community flea-markets. Not a
dime!!!!!!!!!!! We do what we do because we want to see our neighborhood become a better place. I know
there’s got to be more of you out there. What do you think??????????

Ah, can you smell it? Summer is in the air and right around the corner. As you shed the
heavy winter sweaters, you may realize that they were covering more of you than was there last
fall!
This is the perfect time to get moving and eat better! Warm weather calls you outside to
walk and maybe even jog (after checking with your doctor first, of course). Meet up with
neighbors you haven’t seen during the long winter. Social interaction is a good way to help
prevent heart disease.
While you are out getting exercise and getting reacquainted with your neighbors, walk on
over to the Flagship House of Prayer. You can walk in any Sunday at 11 AM for worship, or
Wednesdays at 7 PM for Bible study. The door is open, walk on in!

Whether you have a pieced quilt that belonged to your great
grandmother, an old wooden trunk in the basement, a treasured dinner service, an old toy you played with as a
child, or a rocking chair that belonged to your great aunt, come to the Dundalk Antiques Appraisal Day and
discover the value of your family heirlooms.
Dundalk Antiques Appraisal Day will be celebrating its 5th Annual Event on August 22, 2015,
benefiting the St. Helena Community Association, Inc. The Dundalk Antiques Appraisal Day
event feature a panel of accredited appraisers and national experts in the areas of American
furniture, folk art and primitives, glassware and porcelain, silver, pewter,
jewelry, coins and clocks who will examine your item and give you a verbal
approximation of value.
This is a very unique event in Dundalk. We are sure people are going to be
very happy with the estimates they receive for their cherished possessions, but
not everything will bring the appraisal that they were looking for; in any case it will be fun to
find out the true value of your heirlooms. A few years ago we had an heirloom valued at
$20,000, maybe your item will be the next great FIND!
Hotdogs snacks and beverages will be provided by the St. Helena Community Association, Inc.
Due to insurance restrictions, Appraisal Day staff cannot handle patrons' objects. Please plan to
transport your objects from your car to the appraisal event. The St. Helena Community Association
is not responsible for objects left unattended. No buying or selling of objects is permitted at the
event.

Police Crime Report for St. Helena
In the past few months there have been a lot of people reporting break-ins in their homes and cars. Some have
sent me emails and others have posted it on Nextdoor St. Helena. So I asked the Police on the county and city if
they could give me a report on the number of calls to 911 and how many reports were actually written. Please
keep in mind that these numbers cover anything from Burglary, Assault, Narcotics, Abuse and Theft from Auto,
the list is long. So here are some of the numbers for the past 3 months.
Total Calls to 911 County/City = 474
Burglary/Larson County/City = 43
Destruction of Property County/City = 9
Total Reports Written County/City = 103
Disturbance County/City = 74
Narcotics County/City = 10
The St. Helena Neighborhood Association use to have a Citizen on Patrol (COP) and it folded because we did
not have enough people to go out and patrol our streets. If you would like to help bring this program back and
volunteer to go out at least one night a week please let me know and we will have a meeting with the Police to
reinstate this program.

Cimaglia Park Reforestation
Have you been to
Cimaglia Park at Fort
Holabird
lately?
Don’t know where it
is? It’s at the corner
of Pine and Oak
Avenues, across from
Donna’s Tavern.
Before the trees were planted
You’re looking at 25 years of advocacy and dedication from
our community association, local businesses, local and Federal
Government and volunteers of every stripe. Thousands of
hours involving clean-ups, tree plantings, environmental
remediation’s and the removal of old structures, including two collapsed bridges, a gas station, service roads
and abandoned playing courts (basketball and tennis). It’s been a long road, but we showed that we cared
enough to make a difference and be diligent in our pursuit for something better.
Last fall (2014) the renovation of the ball fields, including
lights and irrigation, a new trail which is almost ½ mile
long, a new basketball court and additional parking, were
all completed from a 1.7 million dollar grant through Rec
and Parks (Baltimore City).
This spring a new phase has started a massive
reforestation project inside the park. In the past we could
only plant 15 to 20 small trees at a time with volunteers.
This time professionals from McDowell Landscaping are
planting 965 trees at one time. This project is being
funded by the MTA in relation to the Red Line Light Rail.
“The Maryland Transit Administration and its project partners are committed to making the Baltimore
Red Line Green. Our goal is to meet and exceed environmental requirements and sieve an opportunities
to support green initiatives in the Baltimore Region.”
This project includes the removal of invasive, non-native species from along Colgate Creek such as Japanese
Honey Suckle, English Ivy, Asian Elms, Mulberry, Japanese knotweed and Chinese Tree of Heaven. These are
being replaced with 30 American tree species including Red Maple, River Birch, Black Gum, American
Sycamore, Swamp White Oak, Burr Oak, Willow Oak, Tulip Popular and Kwanzan Cherry. Much of the grassy
areas are to be converted to meadows. Also there is a 2 year maintenance
plan to include watering and dead tree replacement.
Not only does the reforestation create a wonderful oasis of nature in our
community, it enhances our recreation space, helps clean the air and water
and offers a chance to escape our fast paced world each day.
Everyone can help take care of green gem by showing a little respect and
care. Take your trash home with you. If you can take there, you can take it
home, pick up behind your pet. Don’t be lazy. Dogs should be leashed. No
motorized vehicles off the parking lot. It has taken many years of work,
time, effort and money; please don’t take it for granted.

The Councilman’s Corner
By Jim Kraft, Baltimore City Councilman – 1st District
First District Baseball League. As I’ve stated
before, the health and success of students in the
Southeast is one of my top priorities. If you would
like to get involved with the League, please contact
Jeff Amoros at [email protected].
This league allows students the chance to grow in a
safe and smart environment.
The recent unrest in our city
has highlighted the continuing
challenge to government and its
elected officials to support all
citizens of Baltimore. It has
also shown how strong, capable
and determined our city can be
when it joins together in times
of need. I will continue to work
with anyone who is committed
to making this a city of tomorrow, today.
It is important to me to connect with constituents
and hear their thoughts on all things Southeast. This
year, my annual constituent breakfast will be held at
Ikaros, located at 4901 Eastern Avenue.
Registration starts at 9 A.M. and the program will
begin at 10 A.M. A full breakfast will be served.
The breakfast is free. Please call my office at 410396-4821 to confirm your attendance.
One way I encourage schools to help their students
grow is by sponsoring the Southeast Schools
Baseball League. After being postponed due to
rain, Opening Day was held on Thursday, April 23
in Patterson Park. Since the first pitch, teams have
improved their baseball skills and are learning
teamwork and good sportsmanship. Thank you to

City Farms Garden Program
Gardening in the city is difficult because of small and often shady yards. The City Farms Program offers sunny
locations with soil well suited for most vegetable and flower gardens. In addition, the City Farmer receives a
quarterly newsletter, which provides a wide range of gardening information and advice. The City Farms
Supper, is scheduled for August 18, 2013, also gives the City Farmer the opportunity to meet fellow urban
gardeners from all areas of the city.
The City Farms Program of the Department of Recreation and Parks began in 1978,
with the first City Farm Garden opening at Clifton Park. The program has since
expanded to seven gardens, with additional gardens located in Carroll Park, DeWees
Park, Druid Hill Park, Cimaglia Park at Fort Holabird, Leakin Park and Patterson
Park.
The Cimaglia Park City Farm Garden is located in Saint Helena. To get there, take
Dundalk Avenue to Pine Avenue and continue to where Pine Avenue ends at the park. It
is across from Donna’s Tavern.
City Farms plots measure approximately 10’ by 15’ and rent
for $30 per year. The rental fee includes city water, wood
chips and manor compost. There is a onetime key fee of $10, which gives the
gardener access to a fenced and locked garden. For more information, or to reserve
a garden plot, call Coleen McCarty, City Farms Coordinator, at 410-396-4850 or email [email protected].

This years’ scholarship awardee is Ms. Brianna Floystad of the 6500
block of Baltimore Ave. Shirley Gregory will present the award on
May 19th during the awards ceremony at Patapsco High School and
Center for the Arts. The award is in the amount of $500.00. Brianna
will be attending Elizabeth Town College (in Pennsylvania) in the
fall. CONGRATULATIONS Brianna.
As a reminder…. Funds collected over this past year from our
aluminum drive are directly earmarked for this purpose. If at
scholarship time, we have $1,000.00 in the fund, then 2 awards are
offered. As of this writing, we have over $200.00 in the fund… so
I’m somewhat optimistic that next year at this time 2 scholarships
may be offered. So my friends and neighbors… Keep Those Cans
Coming. Get them to us by:
 Bringing them to community meetings or events
 Drop them off at Shirley’s House (6512 St. Helena Ave)
 Drop them off at Joe’s house (226 Detroit Ave.)
 We don’t have to be home… just put them in the front or back yard. We’ll get them.

COUNCILMAN’S CRANDELL CORNER
By: Todd Crandell, Baltimore County 7th District
410-887-7174
The historic St. Helena
community
straddles
two
jurisdictions. Sometimes this
creates a complexity in getting
things
done
as dedicated
community leaders address both
city and county officials for
assistance with issues. I observed
the cleanup activities on April
11th, I was impressed to watch
residents from the county and city come together along
with the Port and several others to spend a pleasant
Saturday morning and afternoon making your
neighborhoods shine. While I have authorized and
passed legislation to address illegal dumping, it takes
the help of your engaged community to begin to make a
difference.
As we move forward, the various county
agencies are beginning to play a role in a greater
movement. It takes a group effort to produce results, and
I was proud to walk along with Precinct 12 Commander
Captain Orlando Lilly as he and his outreach team
toured your community. Problem areas were identified,
and the team of Officers noted your input. I have no
doubt they will put it to use for future results. Over the
past two months I've done several walk-throughs across
the district with Captain Lilly. We have a degree of
cooperation and partnership between our offices and
community leaders that I believe exceeds the
expectations of many communities so far.
After the walk-through and cleanup activities,
we were able to get a street sweeper to assist. I wish we
had a dozen of them working daily in our district, but
the reality is resources are always limited. Balancing
those limited resources of the county with the needs of
our communities is always a challenging task. We have
to take pride in small successes along the path to the
future.
Others see that possibility of a prosperous future
and they share in my opinion that we are a district on
the rise. Evidence can be seen with the brand new Texas
Roadhouse at Merritt Park Shopping Center.
Additionally, Chili's will locate a restaurant there. These
businesses do not invest in an area where they cannot be
successful; they recognize we are on the rise and
support their businesses with our burgeoning prosperity.
That success is produced by the efforts of many.
It is not just my office, and it's not just the police, code
enforcement, or planning. It is, rather, a concerted effort
which starts from the passion of the community and
drives the local government process and all those
departments to produce measurable results over the long
term.
I look forward to the progress we all make
together in the years to come.

National Night Out was first instituted about seven years
ago as a ‘take back out streets’ initiative. In a sense, it’s
evolved from that. Now, many neighborhoods plan
parties, various get-togethers, contests, and displays. A
lot of very positive things have happened in St. Helena
over the last several years… and we want to keep the
momentum going.
This year, our National Night Out event will truly be an
EVENT that you will remember. We have Wildlife
Adventures Outreach Program coming to St. Helena (see
below). We also have a Band all lined up, and McGruff
the Crime Dog is making another appearance again this
year, to take a Bite out of Crime.
Attendees may be able to get a ‘health check’. And
did we mention food? How about if we fire up the
grill and serve the neighborhood. Some attractions
are already in place, others are being worked on…
fliers will be distributed throughout the neighborhood
prior to the event… so this article is just a ‘mark your
calendar’ reminder. But here is the place date and
time:
Place: St. Helena Community Building
Date: Tuesday August 5, 2014
Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Wildlife Adventures
Wildlife Adventures will be bringing live animals to see up-close and personal and helps us
to know if we are Living Wild! This program examines the animal’s lives, some issues
facing their survival and positive ways that we can make a difference in their lives. Touching
is encouraged of the reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, and things you may find on
a hike. Children learn the “tricks” that animals use to survive in the wild. All animal will be
on display for children to touch and/or hold animals.
Possible included animals: Rabbit, Duck or Parrot, Hedgehog, Toad, Tarantula, Turtles,
Lizard, and Snakes. Snakes include one or two local snakes and at least one large exotic Boa
Constrictor or Python.
