My office has a nice view of the coastline from the fifth floor. The real benefit is the FM reception, pulling in classical-music stations from Los Angeles. We enjoy the chamber music, symphony, opera, theater, and restaurant scenes here. The jet plane has made it possible to travel more widely than I would ever have dreamt possible in high school. Academe has permitted sabbaticals: a year in Sweden, a month each in Copenhagen and Padua, and four separate month-long stays in Paris. Besides many trips around the U.S., international conferences have taken us to York and Guilford, Belgium, Japan, Regensburg, Mexico City and Cancun, Israel and Egypt (two days after the invasion of Kuwait), Brazil (three times), Venezuela, Berlin, Sicily, Korea, Uppsala, Turin, and most recently China. Add-on excursions included Britain, Italian hill towns, the Riviera, the Dalmatian and Amalfi coasts, Sardinia and Corsica, Prague/Bratislava/Budapest/Vienna, a Baltic cruise to Tallinn and St. Petersburg, and a cruise along the coast and fjords of Norway. Marilyn took me to conferences in Sydney and Munster, and we went purely as tourists to Italy, Spain, Turkey, Costa Rica, and Hong Kong. Most satisfying accomplishment - my marriage. Hood College, MA from U of Edinburg, Scotland, plus a third college degree. I was a teacher at a Community College. My most life-altering event was the death of my beloved mother early in 5th grade (Miss Dre ssing’s class). I went wild for a while, then I managed to attend and graduate from Hood College and earn my first degree. I married Royal Cleaves Johnson II, a college math teacher whose name I honor and have kept for my children’s sake. I then went on to graduate school and earned a MA in English Literature, getting my final hours from U of Edinburg in Scotland. I had two daughters, both born by the Lamaze Method with Daddy present. We bought an island in Canada and built on it without sacrificing any trees. Then moved to a big country place and got into the really high-adventure stuff. I also became an activist. I earned my third college degree after spending a summer in Africa working in a “bush” hospital and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro when it was still deeply snow-packed. I worked as a therapist, social worker, college teacher and camp staffer in the summer. I married The Rev. Carl F. Pattison nineteen years ago (WHY did he marry such a radical???) and continue to live in the country and plan the next adventure. I will say that I have had major ups and downs. Sometimes I wa s just hanging on by my toes, and other times, I was sailing. According to her brother, Jerry, when she was younger she liked to ride horses and was displaying her riding skills by riding in a stream one winter in Pennsylvania when the horse decided to lie down in the stream. At another time, Ruth was driving down Washington Boulevard and observed a male driver pulled over to the side of the road with a flat tire. Ruth stopped and changed the tire for that thankful driver. Ruth also went to the dirt track races with her best friend and Classmate, Luise WALLY. They even built a still in her basement with the help of Ruth’s father and cooked corn mash that was noticeable all over Virginia Avenue. Luise and Ruth remained close friends by phone. Rachel RAVEY, friend and Classmate, tells of how “We swam almost daily in the Allegheny River near Blawnox, swimming out in front of the huge barges, seeing if we could get across the river before they ran us down. We swam near dams and falls and swam at night. TEACHER Margaret Carr Ms. McCrum She was a no nonsense “Character” and a good teacher. Mr. Berkheimer He had an enthusiastic approach to chemistry. What would you have done differently? I probably would not do much differently, except that I don’t think I was as outgoing as I could have been during my Junior and Senior years. Changing schools after 10th grade was quite a change. Ms. McCrum Mr. McCarthy ----------- What would you have done differently? I would take more time to smell the roses. Ms. McCrum I thoroughly enjoyed her algebra classes. What would you have done differently? Nothing! I have a great life. Ms. Hall I should have listened to her advice and entered the driving competition. Ms. McCrum ------ Ms. Kiley She was demanding but fair. It was good to see her at the AHS Grand Reunion. Mr. Berkheimer His physics classes required participation and provided interesting hands-on learning. What would you have done differently? There is very little that I would have done differently. Those years provided a foundation for what I consider to be a wonderful life. What would you have done differently? Study! TEACHER Kathy Dearing Ms. Kiley She had the ability to make English interesting, even the grammar. Mr. Dahl He had a “ choice” sense of humor. What would you have done differently? Very little! I look back on my five years at AHS and remember them very fondly. Ms. Kiley She really worked hard with me to get a passing grade in English. Mr. Wheeler Mechanical drawing was the only class where I had straight “ A’s”. What would you have done differently? Nothing! Don’t look back. Just move ahead. Ms. McCrum She taught me algebra by intimidation and embarrassment, but it worked. Ms. Lutz Mr. Lindsay They were good classroom managers and knew their subjects. Mr. Fleming He always had his hands full with the band, but that was a fun class and the performances (especially at football games) were memorable. What would you have done differently? Those were GOOD days! I couldn’t say I would have had more fun, because I probably wouldn’t have lived to tell it. There were lots of activities, parties, and fun times, and the longer I think about those days the more I can remember. We all took ourselves very seriously, but that’s the name of the game for those high school years. My family drugstore connection was good/bad news for me. All those experiences and relationships formed a good foundation for me for the next 50 years. I’m grateful for those AHS years. Ms. Kiley Mr. Nikhazy --------- What would you have done differently? Mr. Berkheimer He stirred the science and engineering in my blood, and had patience with the clowns in class. What would you have done differently? I would have learned a lot more about getting into college and programs like ROTC. Ms. McCrum She made her expectations yours. Sometimes it was less than our own expectations and sometimes more. There was nothing you could do about it either way. She was not fair; she had her favorites, but life is not fair and she taught me how to handle that. Mr. Berkheimer He could teach to all his students despite the chasm between those exceptional classmates gi fted in science and the rest of us. I learned! What would you have done differently? Nothing! Judy Gillespie What would you have done differently? Not much! Those were great days. Carol Greene Ms. Kiley She made her classes interesting. Mr. Dahl I loved history and I could finish other work when he reminisced. What would you have done differently? I would like to think that I would have gotten more involved and studied harder. (But maybe not!) Ms. Burnite She made me realize that the arts could be fun. Mr. Berkheimer He made chemistry and physics a challenge. (Even though Dan Thalimer and I used to sit in the last row and play for a penny a point on the difference in our quiz scores.) What would you have done differently? If I could go back to those days, I would get more involved in the aft er-s chool activities and get to know my classmates better. ----- I never had a favorite teacher, but I should have paid more attention in Ms. Klug’s class since the whole world is living on the keyboard now. My two years at Aspinwall were not very happy ones. Jay Labarthe Ms. Kiley She knew what she wanted to happen and made it so; she earned the respect of students (at least mine). Mr. Berkheimer His was much like Ms. Kiley but gave an immense amount of his time for speci al study and teaching, particularly lunchtimes, preparing students for ACS tests. What would you have done differently? I would have spent more time with my parents, brother, cousins, aunt/uncle and grandmother - people who are gone or who I seldom see at this point. Mr. Fleming “Music Man” - somehow he stimulated my life long interest in music. What would you have done differently? My most outstanding memories of Ms. Kiley are “ Diagramming sentences on the board” and “ Consideration for the rights of others is the first mark of a lady or gentleman”.
