Updates – JERRY MANGANO SANDY MANUELE MANGANO 18 Merryton St. Voorhees, NJ 08043 [email protected] Sandy (C) 609 922-1189 Jerry (C) 609 922-1165 Sandy and I are proud to be members of the class of ’59 with so many fine people who have contributed to the better life for their friends and family. Our family of three sons, one of whom turned 50 last year, are raising their families: Jerry Jr. with two children in Medina, OH; Ted and Barbara with three children; and Nick and Alyssa in Cherry Hill with their three children. Are we happy not to be in New Jersey this past winter? We are in the Villages, FL, with a few other classmates in the area: Giordano, McCosker, McDermott, Crossan. We celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2013. Sandy and I play golf together here in the Villages and at Tavistock with friends who also happen to live here in the Villages, Camden Catholic people. This past year we were in Paris for a belated anniversary trip – quite the city, but the most impressive part of the trip was to the beaches in Normandy. Hopefully we will see many of you in Cape May. This year we will be on the trolley trip and bird watching, golf – but not blowing up balloons! DOMINIC MARROCCO 4143 High Sierra Dr. San Antonio, TX 78228 (H) 210 733-6065 Since our last reunion, my wife of 48 years passed to diabetes. I am now on the pathway to marrying a very sweet and wonderful lady. At 73 years of age, I am a very blessed man and full of hope. Yolanda and I have dated for about two years and plan to wed in October. Besides plans to be married, there are few changes since my last bio (50th Reunion book). I am still living in San Antonio, Texas, retired and enjoying life. I recently became a born-again Christian and was baptized at 73. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the reunion, but want you to know that you are in my thoughts and heart. As I reflect, our high school graduation class was perhaps the best, and I am so proud we shared that together. I have a favorite scripture. It’s Psalms 3:1-8 about King David when he fled from his son. God bless and keep you. BOB and NORMA GRIFFITH McAFEE 707 Lees Ave. Collingswood, NJ 08108 [email protected] (H) 856 854-3840 Hello, classmates. We are still enjoying our retirement years - everyday life plus occasional vacation trips. We enjoy day trips and winter picnics ands look forward to our winter vacations in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Our trips are often focused on our hobby of birding. Norma still teaches quilting at the Little Shop in Haddonfield. CHARLIE (CHICK) McDERMOTT 565 Beaulieu Loop The Villages, FL 32162 [email protected] (C) 609 605-0666 (H) 352 753-6051 After 40 years at General Electric Co., where I was an area sales manager, my wife Martha and I left the Medford area to move to The Villages, where we continue to enjoy golf, ballroom dancing and snow-free winters. We travel extensively and this year’s trip was a riverboat cruise down the Rhine. We also enjoy our annual trip to Ocean City, NJ, where we get together with family and friends. Visiting our four sons and 10 grandchildren – who live in Charlotte, NC, Philadelphia and Reno, NV, is also a favorite activity. My favorite memories include working at the Big Oak frozen custard stand and attending high school dances. Once in a while we would sneak over to American Bandstand. Four teachers I believe had a positive influence on me were Joe Goldstein, Harry Schwartz, Chet Olinger and George Homan. –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– 21 LANA MEREDITH CHAMPION 21 Penn Road Voorhees, NJ 08043 [email protected] (H) 856 767-7486 (C) 609 767-8600 Dad and Mom both have passed at the ripe old ages of 98 and 99. The Collingswood house has been sold and remodeled, and strangely enough the grandchildren of a very good friend have moved into the upstairs apartment. We have been blessed with two beautiful grandchildren. Kellie had a daughter, Mollie, whom both of my parents lived to know. Kendall continued the Meredith family tradition of being married on Jan. 22. She was the fourth generation to do so. Dad died shortly before the wedding, but Mom danced up a storm. Last year Kendall presented us with a beautiful grandson. She took the house number from the Madison Ave. house to put into her house, which strangely enough is also 31. I finally retired from the Voorhees school district. Helping out with our little ones fills a lot of my time. It’s true that God gives children to young people for a reason! Champ works part-time for Rutgers University and still teaches a course at the community college. He continues to deer and turkey hunt in Virginia. I’m grateful that we are able to get together for another reunion, as our numbers do seem to be getting smaller. This is the first reunion without my dear friend Patsy Agurkis Shontz, but I know she is with us in spirit. Hope to see you all in another five years. BILL AND GEORGENE HORNER MORRISON 42 Lavender Drive Sewell, NJ 08080 [email protected] (H) 856 227-0850 (C) 856 994-2120 The best thing at this point is that Jean and I are in fairly good health. Jean spends her time doing things with her friends, daughter and grandson. We do 22 – Classmate some travel and have been spending Februarys in Florida. I like fishing, boating and reading. Our grandson plays ice hockey and it is really enjoyable to watch him grow in this sport. I suppose that in the next year or two we might relocate to Florida; but, we still enjoy living here near our friends and kids. We wish you all the best. GERALD O’HARA 508 Sandstone Place Gallup, NM 87301 [email protected] (C) 505 870-1314 I’m writing this less than a week after my retirement and it’s a wonderful feeling. The last few weeks seemed like months, but now I feel my energies can be dedicated to useful and fruit-bearing purposes. Currently I’m running for the McKinley County, NM, Commission as well as using my new-found freedom, nvesting even more energy into our pet community projects. Win, lose or draw, that will not change. We’ve invested too much energy thus far to abandon these projects in favor of a lifestyle defined by peach-colored shirts with “matching” sea foam colored pants. Millie and I are planning to attend the upcoming “double nickels” reunion fully and look forward to visiting with all of you who will also be there – and please, be there! I am intimately familiar with how much effort Priscilla, Ron and Bob put into the cohesiveness of OUR class of ’59. The reward for their efforts is your participation. We are in excellent health (so far), which can be attributed to a mix of Millie and I astutely picking good gene pools before birth, staying involved with life and some crazy notion on the part of the Creator that we deserve that gift. Well, Millie okay, it makes sense, but me? That’s crazy. How crazy? Well, one standard deviation from the crazy notion on the part of the Creator had a favorite in the Super Bowl. Anyway, the worst we’ve had to content with is Millie’s hip replacement four years ago and my kidney stones last year. Priscilla and Bill King, Millie and I have been taking actual vacation trips together for a few years now, visiting different parts of the Western U.S. and I couldn’t ask for better traveling companions. Also, I couldn’t ask for a more stunning country to travel in. The things we’ve done and seen are the stuff of expanded horizons and a deepened appreciation –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– Updates – of the wonders we are surrounded with and that includes our nearby environs. Yes, the very same “stuff” of wonder captured so artistically in photos by Bob Homan. See you in Cape May. CAROL OLENSCHLAGER 3032 N. Constitution Rd. Camden, NJ 08104 [email protected] (H) 856 962-7316 Let me live in a house by the side of the road Where the race of men go by. The men who are good and the men who are bad, As good and as bad as I. I would not sit in the scorner’s seat, Or hurl the cynic’s ban: Let me live in a house by the side of the road and Be a friend to man. (From the writings of Sam Walter Foss) KENNETH OSTBERG 572 Fruitville Pike Manheim, PA 17545 [email protected] (Ken) 717 203-5703 (Eileen) 717 802-4181 Eileen and I are blessed with good health and a joy-filled life. Together we have six children and seven grandchildren, two of whom are 14 months old. Among church, family, traveling, maintaining our home and loving our neighbors, our days are full. I have been retired from PP&L for 12 years (early out) and Eileen is retired from Lancaster Surgery Center and now teaches a toddler church program part-time. Eileen and I both enjoy reading and Eileen likes scrapbooking and baking. I enjoy cooking and just having fun with people. LOIS PALMA-BROWN 222 Red Mountain Drive Cloverdale, CA 95425 [email protected] (H) 707 894-0623 No real changes in my life. I worked in the field of occupational health. I’m divorced from my first husband and my second husband died. I live in Cloverdale, CA, in Sonoma County, a wine-growing region. Not blessed with children, I keep busy by serving on the board of directors at the senior center and the Homeless Task Force for a homeless shelter. Helping with the annual Fiddle Contest and Citrus Fair in my community keeps me busy. In my spare time, I like to make pottery, take art lessons, travel, pet sit and play mah jongg. TOM PARR 22 Garrett Rd. Reading, MA 01867 [email protected] (H) 781 944-0863 (C) 617 335-8967 After a six-year stint doing hyperspectral and LIDAR research for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, I find myself retired. However, I may still try to find some consulting or teaching opportunities. My wife Mary expects to retire from her pediatric practice this fall. Our three daughters (Jess, Gillian and Sasha) are all married and our son (Bren) just announced his engagement. Our only grandchild (Lily) is five. We continue to travel – the Galapagos, Hawaii, Ireland and Tanzania in recent years – and have especially enjoyed hiking and snorkeling on those trips. This May we went to Norway and some of the remote Scottish islands. We also spend time each fall hiking and biking in New Hampshire and along the Maine coast. In the winter I enjoy skiing nd snowshoeing in the White Mountains and the whole family tries to get together for a week of skiing at Smuggler’s Notch, Vermont, Next we hope to travel to New Zealand. I’m again active with the MIT Outing Club and serve as a member of its alumni board; last summer I joined the club on a whitewater canoeing venture. I still love flying my airplane, though weather last winter was not very cooperative. –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– 23 STEVE PHELAN MULLER [email protected] Mid-May to Mid-November PO Box 1238 705 Francisco St. LaVeta, CO 81055 (C) 830 613-9877 Mid-November to Mid-May 650 Pecan Creek Dr. Horseshoe Bay, TX 78657 (H) 830 596-0520 Cell same as above Since retiring from medicine in 2003, life has been full and exciting. For nine years, Vicky and I lived at 9,300 ft. in a CO log cabin – 10 miles from the nearest paved road and 1 ½ hours from the nearest grocery store. During those years, we ran a little company, Brush b’ Gone, to help neighbors make their properties more “fire safe.” In 2012, we moved 12 miles east and 2,200 ft. lower to the town of LaVeta (pop. 700), which harbors wannabe artists, musicians and various misfits. It is so much fun that we can only live there six months of the year. With 12 grandkids, all in Texas, we spend Nov. to May in the Hill Country 45 miles west of Austin. During the last few years, we operated a little side show, Wee Haul, intending to help “old folks” transport goods/junk from place to place. As that business is slow and boring, we have just now started the first tequila farm in Texas (actually an agave aqui) pictured here with el jimadore jefe holding the caos (hand tool)…and sampling some other (inferior) brand of the infamous cactus juice. As we have a pair of owls living on our farm, our tequila will be marketed as El Tecolote Loco. Don’t hold your breath waiting for our bottles to appear on your local shelves (though we have the labels printed), ‘cause the plants take +/- 15 years to mature. Though it is a trite expression, we do realize we are living the dream. When asked, “How are you doing?”, we reply “Better than we deserve!”…and it’s true. The three things we hold most near and dear are our Faith, our Family and our Memories. As you are part of number three, we look forward to making more of them with you in October, 1914. JACKIE PHILLIPS Ph.D 149 E. Broad St. New Holland, PA 19557 [email protected] (H) 717 355-0765 (C) 717 808-0993 I say that I am still moving forward in my adventurous life. I have no regrets. The children and 24 – Classmate I have traveled all over Europe when we were younger. I have lived in France and Spain. This year we go to the Costa Del Sol to transfer our condo to our youngest son. After staying home with the children for 15 years, I finished my master’s in counseling psychology at 40 and finished my Ph.D at 50. I am still working as a PA psychologist and have a title as clinical director. I am very close to my children and grandchildren. Each September I go to the Jersey shore and still love it as much as ever. My husband and I, after 30 years, still are crazy in “like” with each other. We enjoy our life so much. I am happy and grateful for my life – high school at Collingswood High, a college degree and wonderful children and grandchildren. Most of all, I am grateful that I never lost my silly gene and that I still laugh loud a lot. Now my goals are smaller, like having fun and laughing every day. I am so grateful to see again this wonderful class of ours in October. DR. ROBERT PRITCHARD 404 NW Shoreview Dr. Port St. Lucie, FL 34986 [email protected] (H) 772 446-7440 After retiring from Rowan University after nearly 40 years of teaching, writing, consulting and investigating in real estate, Barbara and I decided to take a close look at Florida as a place for our permanent retirement residence. Why Florida? Because it is warm, offers year-round recreation, has a minimum number of potholes, is relatively easy to get to from NJ and offers important tax advantages. We decided to buy our retirement home in “The Cascades,” a senior community located in Port St. Lucie on the eastern coast of southern Florida. We also purchased a second home in River Winds (West Deptford, NJ), another senior community, where we will spend the holiday season and a couple of months in the summer. Life with Barbara is great. We get along very well, enjoy many of the same activities and share many of the same activities and values; we recently celebrated our 15th anniversary. I am truly blessed with her. We eat great low-fat meals, exercise a lot, visit with our –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– Updates – four children (in the north land), travel, enjoy playing bridge and we are on two tennis teams. I continue to write articles as a guest columnist for Florida papers, as well as the Courier-Post and South Jersey Times. Currently, I am preparing an article that examines the impact of the armed assault of an electrical substation in Metcalf, CA, on the peninsula called southern Florida. Interesting topic. DON RAFF 603 N. Shamrock Rd. Bail Air, MD 21014 [email protected] (H) 410 838-8398 After 11 years as a band and chorus teacher and 24 years as a secondary school assistant principal, I am now retired and living in MD. I was married and had two sons, Jeff and Steve, both school administrators. I was divorced (no fault, remain friends) and remarried to Carolyn Weaver White in 1994. I have a stepdaughter, Nicole, a Ph.D. in medical research presently working for the Dept. of Defense at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. My main hobby away from music is sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. We have traveled to Europe and many states in the US. Once took a river cruise in Iceland and met our former exchange student, Solveig Karvelsdottir. I have served as president and secretary of the Eastern Shore Band Directors Association. Over the years, I organized and directed the Smyrna (DE) Community Band and was assistant director of the Bel Air Community Band. I have been a member and arranger of the Susquehanna Symphony for 28 years and have been a member of the Wolftrap Big Band for 8 years. I have written 16 arrangements for the community band, a jazz band and orchestra and am a member of ASCAP. GENE RAMSBOTTOM 128 Montrose Ave. Bryn Mawr, PA 19010 [email protected] Travel in 2012 to London and Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands by rail with stays at many hostels, and Mexico in 2013 were highlights since our last gathering in Cape May. Otherwise, tending to either Rose Marie’s grandchildren or mine has also been a source of joy, though we are as happy to depart as when we arrive. Sailboat racing on the Chesapeake and its tributaries has become another key interest in the interim – not as captain, but rather as yeoman sailor or even as “railmeat” (ballast) has its rewards. We are involved with our Unitarian church in Devon, PA, on many fronts: choir, social justice and more. We enjoy center city theater, opera and the orchestra. And we love to dance, which is how we met 15 years ago. This year is also my 50th college reunion at Rutgers-Camden – my birthplace. Kind regards and best wishes to all. KEN ROBERTS 120 Kihade Trail Medford Lakes, NJ 08055 [email protected] (H) 609 714-3093 (C) 609 744-0119 Like many classmates, Kathy and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary last year. Some 100 relatives and friends witnessed our renewal of vows and joined in a party. I’m supposed to be retired, but the current Retrospect staff keeps the Old Geezer around to tell stories of the “Old Days,” the years prior to 1980, and to laugh about my completely clueless adjustment to the post-1980 Digital Age. I have written over 500 interviews/features since 2007, which I find fulfilling. I never had time to write such features when I owned the paper. I have served the Collingswood High Athletic Hall of Fame for 22 years and this year I also joined the board of the Camden County Sports Hall of Fame. My wife and I are both active in our church missions council. She is chairman of the peace initiative, while I am program chairman for our monthly men’s breakfast. We read in the Bookmates program for children. I am also hooked on fantasy baseball and football. Kathy and I both like traveling and going out to dinner with friends. We also enjoy our four children, Pam, Eileen, Craig and Jackie, and seven grandchildren, ranging in ages from 10 to 16. –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– 25 WALT ROECKER 125 Meeshaway Trail Medford Lakes, NJ 08055 [email protected] (H) 609 654-5211 Since our 50th reunion, Toni and I have continued to enjoy doing many things together: traveling, museums, birding, house and yard projects, church activities and friends. Some of our trips included our wonderful Costa Rica experience (thanks Wolfsons!) and a visit with Priscilla and Bill in Tucson. We have been to Naples, FL, almost every year to see Toni’s best friend (from third grade) and my daughter Jacquie). My son is still in Chicago. Also managed to see the Magees there one year. Every summer we visit Toni’s college roommate in the Berkshires and friends in Vermont. Another New England destination is Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire (where Toni’s son and family do triathlons). Her son did an “Ironman” in Lake Placid, so of course we went to cheer him on! Last summer we visited friends in the Boston area and spent an amazing day on their boat in Boston Harbor. Also went to the Biltmore in Asheville and Falling Water in 2013. Health-wise: I have had a shoulder replacement and “deal with’ arthritis. Otherwise, I manage to keep pretty active and even have a part-time job as a crossing guard in Medford Lakes (where ALL the kids ride their bikes to school). BOB ROEGER 1652 Kelvington Blvd. Gallatin, TN 37066 [email protected] (H) 615 451-3144 I am married to Marion (Fiene) from Cherry Hill, NJ, since 1967. We have three married daughters, Michelle, Christine and Danielle, and ten grandchildren. I graduated from Rutgers University in 1963 with a BA in political science and served six years in the Air Force (air wing intelligence) In my professional career, I have been CEO/president of two Fortune 500 companies in the building materials manufacturing industry; later stages of career became a venture capitalist associate/specialist for company mergers/acquisitions and turn-arounds. 26 – Classmate I retired from corporate life in 2003. In 2005, I moved to Nashville, TN, and became a high school math teacher, while my wife pursued her real estate venture. I wanted to do something I thought would be worthwhile, that I felt I could so something different, but on a different level and in a different way. I teach algebra, trig. and calc. to teenagers by trying to impact their lives both in the classroom and in the “real” world once they graduate – and how math is important in that world. I’m in my tenth year doing this and enjoy it immensely. Besides, it keeps me younger and keeps my brain from atrophy. Marion and I vacation in Florida and New England, travel a lot and enjoy country-club life. And I still love the game of baseball as much as I did as a kid growing up in Oaklyn. My best to you, and all 1959 classmates. PAT RONEY 705 Clear Cove Granite Shoals, TX 78654 [email protected] (H) 512 589-5945 I only send my best regards to our great classmates and report I’m enjoying my life here in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. JEAN ROSS THOMAS 33 Crofton Commons Cherry Hill, NJ 08034 (H) 856 667-3941 Where has the time gone? I can’t believe I am this age and have had the blessing of being able to enjoy so many experiences in life – good and bad. I am in good health, my family is doing well and I am blessed with wonderful grandchildren. And, most of all, I love the Lord and love to laugh! I am now a widow. I spend my time caring for Mom, –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– Updates – serving the Lord through my church and with the Light House Riders, Chapter 923, of the Christian Motorcycle Association (cmausa.org). I don’t have my own bike for several reasons, but do so enjoy working and riding with the others. Beside doing various riding events, our chapter also attends events with our “Boot Shine” booth, where our members give free boot shines to anyone who will allow us. It is such a blessing to meet and serve others and have the opportunity to pray with them. If you ever attend an event with a “Light House Riders” booth, please stop by and let us serve you. I hope I am able to spend a day with everyone at this reunion. God’s blessings to all of you! DORIS SANTORA SICILIANO 6 Sequoia Drive Cinnaminson, NJ 08077 (H) 856 829-8381 I have been retired for ten years and still live in Cinnaminson, NJ. My husband Tom and I have been married for 47 years and are blessed with three wonderful children and their wonderful spouses and five of the world’s greatest grandchildren. We are a close family and spend lots of time together. We love to go to Ocean City to our kids’ houses in the summer. Guess you could say we are living the good life with the help of God. ANITA SBAR GROW 5611 Cherokee Circle Fairway, KS 66205 [email protected] California, where I completed college and graduate school and began teaching and making art. After living in Nebraska a few years, I moved to the suburbs of Kansas City, where I still reside. Now retired from teaching, I continue to paint the landscape and exhibit locally. For the joy of traveling, Jon, my partner of 14 years, and I manage to go abroad each year. Since the last reunion, we have set foot in Turkey, India, the Baltic states and St. Petersburg, Israel and Jordan and Morocco. We visit the Philadelphia/NJ area and the Outer Banks of NC regularly to be with family and friends, including Jon’s two young grandchildren, who call me “Mimi” (another name for “Grandma”). I keep quite occupied with book club, French study, helping with our vast vegetable garden, fitness and dance classes, especially the Afro-Brazilian-Samba dance performing group “Women of the Drum.” Through the years, the connections with my CHS ’59 friends have been my treasure. I look forward to our 55th reunion to renew friendships and catch up with classmates in Cape May. SALLY SCHOLL OLIVERI 534 West Shore Dr. Brigantine, NJ 08203 [email protected] (H) 609 266-0369 (C) 856 304-0848 Since the 50th reunion: My oldest grandson (Cameron) spent two tours of duty in Afghanistan and is still in the military. He was married to Victoria in Sept., 2012. My oldest granddaughter (Reagan) is a college student at Temple University and on their gymnastics team. My other grandchildren (Gavin, Daniel and Tayler) are all high school students and I keep very busy traveling to attend many of their events. I retired in Aug. 2012, expecting to relax and enjoy retirement, but Superstorm Sandy had a different idea. In Oct. 2012, my home was substantially damaged and it took until Nov. 2013 before repairs were completed and I could return home. I was fortunate to have had the support of family and friends. I have kept in touch with many Oaklyn friends and I am looking forward to our 55th reunion. Thank you to our reunion committee. You do a great job! My nine grandchildren still keep me busy. My oldest grandson graduated from college and is attending Temple U. working toward his master’s in music composition. My next oldest grandson is attending college locally and is getting his education in the natural gas industry. This industry has greatly improved the local economy. I have two granddaughters and one grandson graduating from high school (from three different school districts) and all are planning to attend college in the fall. The rest are still in school, three grandsons in high school and one granddaughter in junior high. I will not be attending the reunion, but I hope everyone has a wonderful time. ARTHUR SCOTT 7610 Glenwood Drive Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 [email protected] (H) 843 449-4905 As my wife and I have both entered into our 70s, we often talk about what we should be doing. I usually say, “I want to finish strong.” That involves continuing to grow stronger, having been together for 53 years. Our four married children have blessed us with 12 grandchildren. Since the 50th CHS reunion, we have been able to take six of them on special trips. Upon reaching age 10, they select the location for a week-long trip with us. Our desire is to carve our name on their hearts and not in marble. I am still involved in preaching the Word of God domestically, as well as in periodic trips serving churches in the Ukraine. There is a real need in a broken world for God, who can heal that brokenness. Every other month this last year has involved my wife traveling to Kentucky to care for her 95-yearold mother. It has changed our lifestyle, but has enabled us to honor a mother in a caring way. On this 55th CHS anniversary, I am still very strong and humble to declare, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song and He has become my salvation.” (Isaiah 12:2). Blessings to you all 28 CAROL SEIBEL HENDRIX 40 Junction Road Dillsburg, PA 17019 [email protected] (H) 717 432-8276 Since our reunion, Sherm and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary, and I celebrated my 30th ordination anniversary and the 60th anniversary of attending my first Phillies game. We are enjoying retirement, including travel these past five years in 11 European countries, Canada and the USA. We continue to enjoy gardening, reading and being with friends and family (two married children and five grandchildren, ages 20 to 5. Now and then I preach, teach and participate in theological conferences. Following our last reunion, several of us who had been friends at CHS started getting together a couple of times a year after not seeing other for 50 years. One classmate from Oaklyn with whom I had kept in touch since graduation was Judy Kampmeyer Zanger, at whose graveside service I officiated in 2012. Thanks to all who planned the 50th, including the Oaklyn reunion. PATRICIA SELBY MARZILLI 12980 Springview Ave. Baton Rouge, LA 70810 [email protected] [email protected] (H) 225 766-9217 Since our 50th reunion, my husband Luigi and I continue research in bioinorganic chemistry at LSU, where Luigi is chair of Chemistry. At home, we enjoy watching birds (egrets, herons, ibises, kingfishers, anhingas, hawks, bluebirds, hummingbirds, bald eagles, etc.) that visit our lake and sleep overnight in the lake, hung with Spanish moss. –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– Updates – After a conference in Slovenia (2010), Italian collaborators loaned us their old family home in a Venice palazzo, letting us experience daily life in the “real” Venice. On sabbatical the next year, our flat in Bath, England, had a panoramic view of the town; we could walk everywhere along canals. From there we visited old friends in Edinburgh and toured Wales. Back home, daughter Alisa and son-in-law Kevin joined us from Austin for JazzFest in New Orleans. We travel often to DC to visit son Alan, daughter-in-law Dana and grandchildren Wibb and Rae, and to Portland (OR) to visit daughter Veronica, son-in-law Greg and grandchildren Oscar and Ruby Mae. I enjoy gardening, sewing and collecting Oziana and books for my library. I attend workshops on deciphering Maya glyphs and this year attended my 50th reunion at MIT with fellow 59er Tom Parr, staying at his home. Grandson Wibb is a future All-American in cross-country and competed in the Junior Olympics in track, crosscountry and indoor track this year. BOB SHEPHERD 1603 Glencrest Trail Lawrenceville, GA 30043 [email protected] Leslie and I are both fully retired now. We have been traveling a lot in the last two years. Visited Niagara Falls (Canadian side), old friends from MA, France (Seine riverboat cruise), Guam numerous times to visit our son, daughterin-law and two grandkids. Have plans in June to visit HI for granddaughter’s first surf competition; Charleston SC to visit friends who have just relocated from San Diego; Ocean City MD in July for a wedding; and maybe New Zealand in Aug. Looking forward to seeing 59ers in Oct. DARLENE SHINN BENDY HC 78, Box 92 Augusta, WV 26704 Enclosed is a check for the reunion book, as it’s not possible for me to make plans at this time. I’ve been dealing with knee replacement surgery, along with tendon repair – three times surgery in six months with a cast on my leg for 95 days, which was just removed. A brief bio would be: I’ve been married for 54 years, raised a family of three, who have given us five grandchildren and 5 ½ great-grandchildren. My husband Marvin retired as fire captain for the city of Camden. He worked some of those years with John Maroldo of our class. CALVIN “JERRY” SHUTS 1014 Longview Dr. West Chester, PA 19380 [email protected] 610 696-4299 After graduation from CHS, I went into the Air Force in 1960. I graduated from the Air Force navigation school in 1961 as a 2nd Lt. and spent four of eight years flying in and out of Vietnam. I did receive an Air Medal for combat missions flown in Vietnam. In civilian flying, I also flew missions carrying troops and cargo into Vietnam. My civilian career started as a navigator and then a pilot for Capitol International Airways. In 1986, I started flying with United Airlines and first doing instruction and training on the DC-8 aircraft. My career at United included flying overseas mostly on DC-8, B-757, B-767 and B-777. I retired in 2000 with a total flying experience of 40 years and some 23,000 hours in the air. My most memorable experience was in the Air Force on a C-124 plane with one engine shut down and two engines on idle power and the last remaining engine at full power heading back to Guam. Yes, we made it okay. My hobbies are woodworking and raising Koi fish in a 1,500 gallon above-ground tank. Most of my woodworking these days is rather small projects. My wife Nancy and I will be celebrating our 31st anniversary in November. No grandkids as yet – hopefully in the near future. –– Collingswood High School Class of 1959 –– 29 BRUCE SMITH 2205 E. Alameda Ave. Denver, CO 80209 – Classmate [email protected] (303) 961-1212 Sandy Johnson Smith and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in June 2015 – WOW! We have lived in Denver for 23 years and love it! We have a son, Gary, 42, and a daughter, Lauren, 39. Gary has given us a grandson, Riley who is 14 and lives in KC. Lauren has given us a granddaughter, Lindsay, who is 8 and a son Benjamin “Bruce”, 2, and lives in Denver. Our other family member is a 2 ½ year-old, 62 lb. golden doodle, who is my constant companion and best buddy We still enjoy skiing and the Colorado mountains for the hiking and biking in the summer. We purchased a second home in La Quinta, CA, (Palm Springs area) in 2003, where we spend most of the winter and spring months playing golf and tennis in 80-degree sunny weather! Since it is only 112 miles from San Diego, we often go there for a few days at the beach. I retired in 2007 and for the past seven years I have provided pro bono mentoring to four small business owners in the technology and outsource service markets. I have also been fortunate to provide business development consulting to a Denver based, $400 M wealth management firm that manages the financial resources of businessmen, NHL and NFL athletes. Most important, our health and attitudes are “excellent!” RUTH SPULER DONADIO 36127 E. Kensington Dr. Springfield, MO 65802 (H) 417 868-8750 Going on 28 years living in Missouri. A source of both happiness and pride is the fact that I was part of our great CHS class of 1959. It’s exciting and exhilarating to look forward to 55th gala celebration, knowing that there will be many hugs, gasps, photos and special rekindling of friendships. Our reunions are just wonderful blends of past and present. I continue to enjoy traveling around this beautiful country of ours, vacationing in Ocean City, NJ, every summer. I also find my hobby of genealogy fun and relaxing. It has been my pleasure to serve as our class correspondent and I thank everyone for all that they have contributed to make my job easier. BOB STEVENS 2904 Emig Ct. Dover, PA 17315 [email protected] (H) 717 747-3448 My wife Dianne and I currently live in PA near our daughter Randi’s family. We have been married 49 years as of this July 31 and we think the marriage is going to last (just kidding). Randi and her husband Ed have three children: two sons, ages 10 and 12, and a daughter, age 5. Randi is an R.N. and we babysit her youngest several days a week while she is working. Our other daughter, Traci, lives in NJ. She is a special ed. teacher, but not currently working, as she has three-year-old twins and a ten-year-old son, which keep her very busy.
