11 February 2016 We are still getting results in after the Year 6 entrance exams and have even more great news to report. Eleven children have been offered places at Bradford Grammar School – Molly, Elissa, Anamaria, Kamran, Emma, Hugo, with Kai, Scarlett, Georgia H, Georgia T and Leah all being awarded Charter Scholarships. Woodhouse Grove has offered places to Anamaria, Imogen, Emma, Eimhir, Hugo and Arabella. GSAL places have been offered to Molly, Fintan, Munashe, Rahul, Livia, Ashaz, Kamran, Joseph, Olivia, Remy, Polite, Toby, Arabella and Georgia T. This is a tremendous set of results on which the children must be congratulated. More results are awaited so watch this space! I had the pleasure of going with the children to BGS swimming gala. Pleasure and indoor swimming pool rarely go together for me – sticky hot, echoey noise to mention just two elements! But Monday really was a pleasure. Not only did the children swim well, a few like elegant fish, they worked together, swapping into races to support each other. Their combined efforts meant we won with a team of 23 from Years 3 to 6, against a squad of 43! The children’s behaviour was exemplary too, plain for all to see. I was really proud of them. Thank you too to the parents who travelled to support us. Happy Birthday to Bongani, Grace M, Michael D, Thomas H, Anna A, Lucas and Olivia, Callum and Alice A. Happy Birthday also to Miss Lloyd and Mrs van Opstal. THANKS! Harriet and I would like to thank you all for your support in Harriet's first ever solo bun sale. Those of you who brought in biscuit/cake tins, who assisted Harriet in putting up posters and bought the produce. Also a final mention to the four girls from Year 5 who assisted Harriet in selling her produce—Mia, Lucinda, Dameisha and Caitlyn. The grand total raised from selling buns is £143.50. Due to unexpected media attention over Harriet’s Bake-a-Thon, her yearly target of £2,700 is nearly met after her first event and currently stands at over £2,000. To say we are overwhelmed is an understatement. Thank you again, one and all. Harriet and Harriet’s mum PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION Don't forget to return your form and payment for the school discos by the end of this week please. In bags this week will be information about our PA annual ball, which is being held on May 14th at Castle Grove, Headingley. This is a popular event so we advise booking your tickets as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Michelle Lofthouse—Chair SWIMMING GALA V BGS On Monday, RHS traveled to BGS for a swimming gala. We took 23 swimmers in contrast to BGS who had double that number. The instruction to the team was simple - ‘SWIM YOUR HEARTS OUT’ and once again, the amazing children from RHS did not disappoint. Boasting several new debutants, including Helena, Noah, Joe F, Holly F and Sophie B, RHS really went at the hosts in style. Helena started off in awesome style, winning her backstroke race, with Noah (Y3) close behind. Hugo won his back stroke race and Ginika won the breaststroke. Hugo also won the freestyle as did Freya. Now normally at this point I tell everyone how Leah won the Butterfly race with consummate ease but Freya, actually sneaked in and won the race by millimeters, which is not easy to do. I for one can’t wait for the re-match! Both girls are truly amazing swimmers and I’m sure Leah actually enjoyed some competition for a change. Then came the relays: U9 Medley 1st U9 Breaststroke Relay 1st U10 Breaststroke Relay 1st U9 Freestyle Relay 1st U11 Freestyle Relay 1st U11 Hockey Tournament at GSAL Last Friday, the U11 girls went to GSAL for a hockey tournament. RHS were the only school to take two teams, which was a triumph in its own right. The other competitors were GSAL, BGS, Wakefield Girls’ and Silcoates. The “B” team found it very tough as they had to play the eventual winners in their first game, which was Wakefield. RHS continues to improve and Caitlyn worked incredibly hard up and down the pitch. Orla made some good saves and Arabella worked hard with Eihmir in defence. Georgia T made some good passes, as did Daisy and Freya. The girls got much better as their games went on and the scores against them were lower as the tournament went on. The “A” team also had a good tournament and didn’t look out of place with the bigger schools. They made a positive start, drawing with BGS and held Wakefield to 0-0 at half time. They narrowly lost to GSAL, and drew with Silcoates. Well played to all the girls who participated. Mr S Lowe Games & PE Co-ordinator The overall results were: RHS BGS U9s 64 36 U10s 54 35 U11s 40 40 158 111 Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed and played their part in a win over BGS, which hasn’t happened since 2012! Thank you to all the parents who came and supported the children. Next up is Moorlands on 7 March. Simon Lowe PE & Games Coordinator The children thought the new swimming hats helped them in that being streamlined was the extra element, so many thanks to the Parents’ Association for their funding of the hats. LIMERICKS BY YEAR 6 On Tuesday we invited the parents of 3VO and 3M to come in and look at our work on the Egyptians. This was the culmination of a term and a half’s work on the topic. Nile Deltas had been made, pyramids built and houses constructed as part of our learning. The information that the children researched independently was presented on ‘A’ frames to make the topic come to life for our visitors. I was over the moon to see all the parents come, ‘one hundred per cent,’ to support their children. Mrs Matthews and I were really impressed by the professional way the children explained the work and items on display to the grown-ups. Their knowledge and confidence in talking to the parents about what they had been doing was a joy to watch. Parents were given quiz sheets to complete as they moved around the ‘market place’ to make sure they were on task. At the end the children assumed the role of teachers to mark the parents’ work by asking them for the answers to our quiz and everyone was a winner! On Wednesday other classes came to pay us a visit and also take part in our quiz. So I would like to thank all the children and teachers who came to support us and learn a little about the Egyptians. It was such a memorable experience for our children and I don’t think they will ever forget it. I know every time they hear Dark Horse by Katy Perry the memories will flood back. I would like to add one final thank you to Super Cup Cake’s dad (alias Kylene’s Dad) for surprising me with a fabulous post on the Y3 Blog. Please do watch the video if you can, the children know where to find it. U11 & U10 Rugby v Pocklington On Wednesday the U11 and U10 rugby teams travelled to Pocklington Prep near York. On a perfect day for Rugby, the U10s faced difficult opponents and quickly realised they would have to work very hard in defence if they were to keep the score line down. In attack, the boys played some intelligent rugby and tried to throw the ball around to keep it away from much bigger and stronger opponents. This did result in RHS scoring five excellent tries through Callum and Oliver. However, the home team was also very organized so they were able to punch holes through the RHS defence despite the best efforts of Matthew, Callum, Harvey and Ben S, who did tackle very well throughout the match. ‘Man of the Match’ was Ben S and ‘Most Improved Player’was Matthew for putting in some bone crunching tackles. The U11s had an even harder time and also found that if you don’t tackle, the opposition will just run past you. Kai had another great game, as did Hugo, who showed great improvement from the last game. Polite scored the game’s only try for RHS, but well done to all the boys for keeping going until the final whistle. A special mention must also go to Luke, Sam F and Oliver who played for the Y6s and were the stand out players! Next up is a small tournament at RHS organised by Leeds Carnegie on Thursday 25 February, followed by a festival at Headingley Carnegie on Sunday 28 February, prior to the Leeds v Bristol game. Details will become available when I have more information. Mr S Lowe Games & PE Coordinator NETBALL NEWS I am not sure if it is allowed but if I could adapt Marv Levy’s quote and say ‘Netball doesn’t build character but reveals character’, it encapsulates the performance of the Year 5 and 6 girls in yesterday’s netball matches. We had a convincing win against Pocklington, but that is not what I am celebrating. The pride of Wednesday afternoon was witnessing the girls understand that we do not want to humiliate opponents and so they willingly adapted where they played and who came off. The captains, Grace O and Livia, managed their teams in a mature manner and virtually every player, regardless of their strengths, played in an attacking position and scored. Olivia, Leah, Emma and Imogen took on the role of umpiring when they were substituted off. One of Pocklington’s visiting staff commented on how astute and fair they were. All the girls were a huge credit to us as a school and a pleasure to be with. Mrs S Young
