December 2015
Principal’s Message:
It is hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us! Life at Miles Mac has been incredibly busy with many curricular
and extra-curricular activities highlighting the calendar. December alone saw many fantastic performances on the stages
as we held our major theatre production, Arrivals and Departures followed closely by our music department’s performances
of Naughty or Nice. All of the shows were very well attended earning rave reviews in the process!
Sports were also prominently featured in the school landscape, underscored by our varsity boys’ volleyball team and their
spectacular run to the provincial final where they earned a silver medal after a dominating season that saw them ranked
number one in the province for much of the season. Our boys’ hockey team travelled to Ottawa to play in a prestigious
tournament where they represented the school and province very well against some high end competition.
Other big news in the school and the community was the school division’s announcement regarding the reconfiguration of
the Miles Macdonell Collegiate catchment area. We are very excited to welcome this year’s current Grade 8s and Grade
9s to our school next year. The school and division are working hard on the Making the Move plans. Please check the school
website for information about reconfiguration by clicking on the Making the Move banner on the front page of our website at
http://retsd.mb.ca/makingthemove/Pages/default.aspx. This information is also available on the Division’s website. Here
are some important dates regarding Making the Move:
Thursday, January 14th: Making the Move Parent Information Evening at 7:00 in Gym A.
Tuesday, February 23: Open House for the current Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians
Wednesday, February 24: Open House for current Grade 9 students and their parents/guardians and new Grade 10, 11
and 12 students and their parents/guardians
Please see our website for full details about the open houses. We will have regular updates about Making the Move on our
website and we will provide timely e-mail updates to parents throughout the year. Should you have any questions about
Making the Move please contact me anytime.
As we enter the holiday season, on behalf of the staff and students of our fine school, I wish you and yours nothing but the
best this holiday season. Enjoy and cherish the gift of time with family and friends.
Season’s Greetings,

We’re making the move!
We’re making the move! Our school is part of the final phase of “Making the Move,” RETSD’s initiative to
reconfigure all schools in the division into early (K-5), middle (6-8), and senior years (9-12) groupings.
Beginning in September 2016, schools within the Miles Macdonell Collegiate catchment area will be
grouped this way:
Early Years (K-5) at Angus McKay School, Lord Wolseley Elementary School, Neil Campbell School, Polson
School, Prince Edward School
Middle Years (6-8) at John Henderson Junior High School, Munroe Junior High School
Senior Years (9-12) at Miles Macdonell Collegiate
Parents and guardians across the division were notified of the Making the Move plan on November 24 and 25.
To find out more, go to the “Making the Move” link on our website. It’s where we’ll provide further
information as the plan progresses.

Annual Music Christmas Craft & Bake Sale
It was a day to remember! The MMC Music Program held its annual Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday,
December 5.
The hallways and 2 gyms were home for the day to more than 150 artisans. The opportunity to visit our
bake sale tables filled with wonderful home baked items, sit and enjoy some delicious food in the
canteen, be the lucky recipient of various prizes and enjoy the diversity of musical entertainment
provided by students are but a small sampling of the beauty of the day.
Thank you to the parents, students and community for being major contributors to our event. We can
hardly wait for the December 3 Craft Sale of 2016!
Drama
Success takes flight on closing night
Our 15 cast a complete delight
Backstage crew were out of sight!!
On December 1st we went back to 1984 to peek in on passengers milling about the
Winnipeg airport. Carol Shield’s play Departures and Arrivals inspired our students
as they shared stories that could have happened today.
After two months of rehearsals and countless hours of work, our 15 cast and 20
crew put up five shows that had their audiences in stitches. Playing over 65
characters challenged both our cast and costume crew, but they pulled it off with
flying colors. Our airport was totally authentic thanks to the families and teachers
who loaned us travel posters and luggage, and built us a nifty luggage carousel.
This play was a lot of fun for all of us, and would not have been such as success
without our dedicated students and everyone else who support them.

Cultural Circle
A special thanks to the members of our Cultural Circle who attended the power, moving, and educational
event in efforts to move towards reconciliation with our First Nations Peoples. Our students were a part of
the 1000+ students who attended the event on November 4th, and I must say, they demonstrated what it
means to be an excellent Buckeye with their respect and engagement in the day’s events!
From the Winnipeg Free Press, November 5, 2015:
It took a student to ask the question, "Why would they do that to people?"
A daylong teach-in for hundreds of Manitoba school kids and teachers on truth, reconciliation and
residential schools rolled out Wednesday at the RBC Convention Centre.

As part of the opening for the National
Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the day
was part pep rally and part workshop, and
marked the second day of an extraordinary
opening for the centre and a database that
went public.
"I think this event is good opportunity for
students and teachers who don’t have any background to start learning about residential schools," Daniel
McIntyre Collegiate Institute teacher Leigh Brown said as an afternoon panel played out on a giant stage.
"That’s the whole point of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission — it’s to share knowledge, to go
home and talk about all the information, all the stories," added Rina Bright, an aboriginal student coach at
St. John’s High School.
"It’s kind of like, unbelievable. Why would they do that to people?" asked Grade 9 student Alison Rowe,
from the Town of Birch River in western Manitoba, about residential schools.
Residential schools were the focus of the largest court settlement of its kind in the country’s history and
led to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Canada’s churches have apologized publicly for their
role. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a public apology on behalf of the country. Some
150,000 indigenous Canadians were forced to attend the schools that ran from the 1800s until the last
school closed in 1996.
If Tuesday was the time for a ceremony where dignitaries paid respect to the fact the National Centre for
Truth and Reconciliation at the University of Manitoba now houses the repository of records and
testimony about residential schools, Wednesday was about acting on it.
The centre wasted little time getting to work on the business of educating Canada about the dark chapter
in assimilation and a brighter, shared future.
Some 1,700 school kids and 350 teachers were assembled at the convention centre to start the process of
reconciliation.
Students and teachers from 35 public schools and half a dozen private, independent schools attended,
along with students from half a dozen First Nations schools.
Former Olympian Clara Hughes urged students to stand up for the truth of residential schools and commit
positive acts of reconciliation. "We’re asking you to imagine a brighter future for this country," Hughes
said.
Hughes introduced herself as a TRC honorary witness, a public-speaking role to talk about residential
schools and reconciliation as a national process.
"I became an honorary witness to retell the stories that I’ve heard, to share with Canadians who don’t
know what our true history is. I’m here to encourage all of you here today, aboriginal and non-aboriginal,
to learn clearly what has happened, to learn about things that should never have been done... to tell people
the truth," Hughes said.
She issued the challenge in the form of a national essay and art competition, called Imagine a Canada. On
March 1, 2016, students with the top 10 entries will attend a special ceremony at Rideau Hall hosted by the
Governor General.
The centrepiece Wednesday for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation was the launch of new
national centre’s online website, a portal into the country’s failed assimilation of indigenous people and the
effects it has had on generations of families.
The centre’s online database went live at 2 p.m. with the release of tens of thousands of documents, from
an interactive map of residential schools in Canada to individual school records and testimonies before
commission hearings from coast to coast.
The event, months in planning, took the combined effort of mainstream, government and indigenous
sectors mainly in Manitoba, including the Manitoba Teachers Society, the Manitoba Association of School
Superintendents, the province, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Aboriginal Peoples
Television Network and City of Winnipeg officials.

Clara Hughes with our Staff and Students
One other important thing that I would like to share with all of you is a call for submissions for the
TRC's "Imagine a Canada" competition. It is outlined below with a link to the information page. I
would love to see students at Miles Mac getting involved in this!
Through the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), all Canadians were asked to
reflect on the historical treatment of Indigenous peoples in this country. The TRC interviewed
thousands of survivors and others affected by the Residential Schools. 94 Calls to Action were issued
by the Truth and Reconciliation calling upon all Canadians to re-imagine their relationship with
indigenous people. Now, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is turning to Canada’s
young people to lead a conversation around the future of the country.
"Imagine a Canada" is a national art and essay competition that asks young people to share their
thoughts on what the future of Canada will look like through the lens of reconciliation. The
competition is open to grades 1-12 as well as to undergraduate students at post-secondary schools.
Contestants may submit works of art, poetry, film, video, or traditional essays in this competition
(see guidelines for grade level breakdowns below).
The top submissions will be selected by a special group of reviewers and will be prominently
featured by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

Soup’er Bowl Fundraiser
"December 1st's Soup'er Bowl Fundraiser was a huge success! In the Art Room a variety of chili and
soup was served up with the purchase of handmade clay bowls and in the Gym, the Winnipeg Blue
Bombers defeated the Winnipeg Police in a charity basketball game.
Almost $950 was raised along with numerous non-perishable food items in support of Winnipeg
Harvest where they are able to leverage $20 worth of food for every $1 donation... this means they are
able to provide over $19,000 worth of food to people in need with the help of our school in efforts to
fight hunger over the holidays"

created.

Music Department
There is no better way to start The Most Wonderful Time of the Year than the Miles Macdonell
Collegiate annual Christmas concerts on December 9-10, 2015, put on by our MMC music students
and of course the passionate music instructors Garth Rempel and Zane Zalis.
It was a time that joined everyone together in this most joyous season. The sound of the MMC concert
band started off the nights with “Do You Hear what I Hear?” “Comfort and Joy”, and “The Most Wonderful time
of the Year”, making everyone dance the Waltz in their seats.
Superphonic followed the band with their own arrangements of “Have Yourself a Merry Christmas” and
“Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (Funky Rudolph)”.
The beautiful voices of our choir filled the hall with “A Prayer for All”, and a Christmas classic, “White
Christmas”. They finished with the crowd’s favorite, “Go Tell it on the Mountain” featuring Grace Wilmer
and Emily Arsenault.
The Gold Jazz Band put us in a Jazzy mood with their lit-up trombones and their jazz version of “What
Child is this?” and “Have a Cool Yule!” Of Course no Christmas concert is complete without “Santa Claus is
coming to Town”(featuring the guitar students) and “Jingle Bells”, and no MMC concert is complete
without the incredible performance of Prodigy who always leaves jaws wide open and everyone
wanting for more.
The nights ended off with a sing-along including everyone in the building. The atmosphere of the hall
was filled with hundreds of voices singing one tune unitedly; a perfect way to end off the night! Many
thanks go out to all those who attended and shared this very special evening with us.

Water Polo
On Sunday Dec 6, 2015 at the Pan Am Pool, the Water Polo team were in the finals and the
Buckeyes knocked it out of the pool winning their first game 9-7.
An outstanding second game was played bringing home silver medals to MMC complete with our
first ever Water Polo Banner. Our Miles Macdonell Team are the silver finalists in Water Polo
Division A. Great plays were made by all team members. Not too shabby for a first year team!
Go Bucks Go !!!!!!
Ms. B is very proud of the whole team. We could not have brought this victory back to MMC
without the coaching of Nancy Smith and Brad Logstrum. Thanks to all the spectators who were
out cheering us on.
Varsity Girls Volleyball
The Varsity Girls Volleyball Team had a successful season this year. They improved a great deal
as the season went on, and should be proud of their accomplishments. The Buckeyes were
ranked within the top 10 provincially, and advanced to the championship side for all
tournaments. In K.P.A.C. action, the girls advanced to the K.P.A.C. semi-finals.
The coaches would like to thank the girls for their time and the many laughs. Special thanks
goes out to the grade twelve athletes who have contributed to the Buckeye volleyball program
for the last few years, and have set the standard in terms of commitment and work ethic. We
wish you much success in your future endeavours, and hope to see you in the stands next year!
We would also like to recognize Charity McMurray for being selected to the 2015 Graduating
All-Star Team.
Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball
Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball Team
The Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball Team put in a lot of time this season. They worked hard,
competed against the best teams in the province, and made new friends. The girls finished
fourth overall in KPAC this year. Go Bucks!
Team Members: Lindsay Amos, Cassidy Drabyk, Hailey Egtberts, Paige Ellison, Tori
Havrilenko, Ayla King, Katheryne Lorenzana, Louise Mangali, Delaney Mansky, Kaylee
Pederson, Lauren Sitar.
Coaches: Ms. M. Vince, Ms. J. Zahaiko, Miss K. Bommersbach, Miss A. Peterson
Buckeye Boys Hockey
The Buckeyes have had a very busy couple months in tournament and league play. In late
November, the team travelled to Ottawa to compete in the Capital High School Hockey
tournament. The competition was excellent, and the boys were able to get a win against a team
from North Bay, but were unable to qualify for the playoff round. While in Ottawa, the team
visited Parliament, the Canadian War Museum, and went to an Ottawa Senators game. The
boys represented our school and city very well!
In league play, the Buckeyes are 8-4 at press time, good for a position in the top third of the
Winnipeg Free Press Division. On Nov. 20 the team faced off against rival Kildonan East. The
game was designated as a fundraiser for CancerCare Manitoba and prostate cancer research.
Team members and coaches participated in a “Movember” competition and both schools raised
money for the cause. The Reivers won the game 4-2, but the Buckeyes won the Movember
competition by raising $1723.00 for a good cause.
In January, the squad will travel to Winkler/Morden for the annual NPC invitational
tournament, in which the Buckeyes were finalists last season. From there, the exciting push to
the playoffs will be on.
If you would like to come see a game, schedules are posted on www.whshl.com. Home games
are typically played on Wednesdays at 4:30 at Terry Sawchuk.
Buckeye Boys Hockey at the Ottawa Parliament Buildings
Girls Hockey
The Buckeyes Girls hockey team is dominating the Winnipeg Free Press “B” division with a
record of 12 wins, 0 regulation losses and 1 OT loss. In January the team will be travelling to
Chicago to take part in the prestigious Chicago Winter Classic Girls Hockey tournament.
Special congrats go out to the following players that are amongst the top ten in the Division for
points, goals, assists, shut-outs and goals against average; Rebecca Thevenot (4th points, 2nd
goals), Grace Fedirchuk ( most shutouts with 9 and lowest goals against average), Kali
Solmundson (6th points, 9th goals, 1st assists), Elise Catelier (6th assists) and Kaitlyn Chorney
(10th assists) . The team is looking forward to continuing with their stellar season and is hoping
to see a lot of fans out to their home games! The following is a list of our schedule for the rest of

Languages Department - Japanese
On Friday, December 4, the Japanese 30S class experienced authentic Japanese cuisine and
dining during their afternoon field trip to Dwarf No Cachette on Provencher Blvd.
Students were able to practice their menu ordering skills in Japanese with the staff while
enjoying such culinary delights as Okonomiyaki ("Japanese Savoury Pancake"), Tempura Don
(deep-fried vegetables on rice), Japanese Curry Rice, authentic Miso Ramen, and Takoyaki
("octopus ball") to name just a few of their menu choices.
Gochisosamadeshita! ("It was a feast!")
"Japanese cooking lessons anyone?" Our grade ten intro Japanese students all raised their hands
when asked this question. On Friday, December 11, students had the opportunity to get their
hands sticky with rice as they experienced cooking with Kennedy-sensei x 2! Kennedy-sensei
and his wife who is from Kagoshima, Japan, showed the class how to make "onigiri" (rice
ball). Two different type were made; "wakame onigiri" is made from a mixture of salt and
seaweed flakes pressed into a ball, while tuna-mayo is a ball of rice with tuna and mayo inside.
At the end of the lesson everyone enjoyed tasting their food along with a cup of green tea. It
brought back fond memories of Japanese "kyu-shoku" (school lunch) for Kennedy-sensei where
all students take part in the preparation of the meal and wait until everyone has been served
before dining.
Itadakimasu! (Let's eat!)
French Immersion
The French Immersion students in Miles Macdonell Collegiate participated in a school-wide
poetry competition, entitled Concours les voix de la poésie, on Friday, December 4, 2015. For the first
time, the school had competitors in two categories, francophone and bilingual. Anne-Sandra
Isingizwe emerged victorious in the francophone competition, and Shaelynn Burr took first
place in the bilingual competition. Both students will be competing on behalf of the school in
the provincial finals. Congratulations to them both!
Languages - Spanish
As the grade 11 Spanish class finished up their health and body unit, Harren Therapies’ yoga
instructor came to the class and taught a yoga class in Spanish. Students were engaged and
enjoyed the opportunity to practice their language skills outside of the class. Additionally, all
grade 11 students went to the Art Gallery and enjoyed a Spanish tour of Olympus.
After walking through the galleries and
learning about the Greek gods, they
worked up an appetite.
Afterward they went to a “Taquería” at
BMC Market where they enjoyed
traditional Mexican tacos with “jarritos”
(carbonized flavour pop). They ordered
in Spanish while enjoying the Spanish
music and learning the meaning of
“picante” (spicy).

Blue Space Youth Conference
On Thursday November 26th four students from Ms. Street's Geography and Global Issues
classes were selected to take part in the Youth Blue Space Conference at Oak Hammock Marsh.
As part of Miles Macdonell Collegiate's focus on Education for Sustainable Development, these
students had the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops such as a hands-on activity
in which students make Eco-friendly shampoo and toothpaste, how to plan an sustainability
focused Take Action project, how to use art to promote environmental initiatives and how to
preserve Lake Winnipeg. The next step for these students will be to plan and implement their
own Sustainability focused action project. Keep your eyes open for these projects around the
school!
State of the Province Address and Question and Answer with Premier Greg
Selinger
Five students from Ms. Street's Global Issues course have been selected to attend the annual
State of the Province Address and Question and Answer Session with Premier Greg Selinger at
the Convention Centre as part of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce High School BOLD
Program. The students, Kayla Labun, Paige Lutzer, Taylor Keir, Mish Baerg and Evan Kiz not
only have the opportunity to be a part of this prestigious luncheon where the Premier outlines
his vision to 750 government and business leaders, but they also have the chance to meet
Premier Selinger and ask him questions about the future of the province. Each student prepared
thoughtful questions in advance about issues that interested and concerned them such as the
state of Manitoba’s foster care system, youth engagement in politics, poverty, and greening the
economy.
The students are extremely grateful to have the opportunity to take some of the things that they
have learned in their Global Issues class and apply them to the real world. They are really
excited about having the voices of the youth heard by our political leaders and look forward to
participating in upcoming High School Council events that the Winnipeg Chamber of
Commerce is planning in the New Year including the annual State of the City Luncheon with
the Mayor Brian Bowman.
Ethics Bowl
On Wednesday December 16th the Miles Macdonell Collegiate Ethics Bowl Team will be
participating in the Regional Finals at the University of Manitoba. The winner of this event will
go on to represent our region at the United States National Ethics Bowl at the University of
North Carolina. The team which is coached by Ms. Street consists of Makenna McAmmond,
Anika Moran, Graham Driver, Joseph Geodisico and Abby Szunyog. The Ethics Bowl is a
collaborative yet competitive event in which teams analyze a series of wide-ranging ethical
dilemmas. Responses are judged according to the quality of a team’s reasoning and how well
team members organize and present their case, attend to and analyze the morally relevant
features of the case and anticipate and pre-emptively respond to commentary and questions and
since this is not a debate, students are rewarded for their skills at acknowledging and/or
enriching their opponents strengths.
Student Council
For the 2015 / 2016 year, our Stuco team has successfully had the Welcome BBQ and our annual
“R U BUCK ENUF” for the new Grade 10’s in September. In October we planned our first spirit
week of the year which was Halloween themed. That week included a variety of activities at lunch
such as karaoke and bobbing for apples in the cafeteria.
The last week before the break in December, we have a fun filled spirit week planned with Holiday
themed days like Holiday Headwear and Ugly Sweater day. We are providing an opportunity to
get you and your friends’ pictures taken with Santa or to come watch the exciting Dance Off
between the dance class and our very own Miles Mac football team.
On behalf of Stuco we would like to say a huge thank you to all the students and staff who have
participated in the events to make them possible! Our events wouldn’t happen without the help
and support of the amazing administration, teachers and all the MMC staff.
As the New Year approaches, we are excited for the many events yet to come as we aim to build a
strong unified community within our school.
Diversity Board - GSA
The Gender and Sexuality Alliance group (GSA) is proud to announce that their interdivisional
and community based project has been completed. The creation of the Diversity Board was
developed through a collective effort, which included all staff members and students from
Miles Macdonell Collegiate, Murdoch MacKay Collegiate (Mr. Walc, Graphic Art Instructor),
Arthur Day Middle School (Mr. Forsyth, Carpentry Teacher) and staff members from the Royal
Bank of Canada. The words that appear on the board are those that we, Buckeyes, believe in.

Vesey’s Bulbs.
AFM News
Kevin Brooks visited our school on November 26 to speak to our Grade 12 students. Kevin shared his
story of the night that changed his life forever. What started as a typical Saturday night quickly
turned tragic because of a poor choice. Kevin left a party under the influence of alcohol and driving at
excessive speeds and caused a horrific crash that killed his passenger and
childhood friend.
Kevin didn’t walk away from the crash unharmed either. Kevin has spent every day since that night
confined to a wheelchair. Kevin's story left the entire room thinking about the impact one poor
decision can have on both ourselves and those around it. It also left us inspired about how he was
able to use his poor decision to influence other young people to think twice about their choices.
Kevin was given a special honor while at Miles Mac. His wheelchair now is branded with an "Are
you Buck Enuf?" sticker which he is very proud to take with him everywhere he goes.
With the holidays upon us, just a reminder to plan ahead and drive safe. A great message for our
students, staff and parents. In addition to always having the option to call a cab or use Winnipeg
Transit, below you will find a list of other alternatives for a safe ride home.
