As a matter of fact, to compare the two track tours would be like comparing a Ferris wheel to a high speed roller coaster ride at Cedar Point. Each is designed to go round and round and both can be enjoyed, depending on the level of adrenaline your body can endure. Needlessly to say, Kevin bought the tickets for the bus ride with me in mind as it wasn't necessarily his cup of tea. The bus, which were really several busses and some cool vintage race car transporters, came via Switzerland for this event. Our driver spoke impeccable Swiss, German, French and English. He explained that the Swiss maker of the bus, Franz Brozincevic & Cie (FBW) produced these busses between the years 1922 and 1985. Our particular bus was manufactured in the 1950's, used as a city mass transit vehicle for 30 years in original condition which I would describe as miraculously pristine. No gum stuck under the seats, no names carved into the seat backs, no split upholstery, this was unlike any public bus I had ever ridden on. We had a early preview of the bus when we looked out our hotel window on Saturday morning. It turns out that the bus crews, two for each bus, were staying at the same accommodations as us. The bus rides were scheduled during the noon break when typically the track goes cold and exclusively on Saturday. We had prepaid tickets and needed to be at the bus terminal 15 minutes before they left. Problem was, where was the bus terminal? You'd think it would be easy to find a bunch of parked busses among the vast car collections but the track grounds are spread out and quite extensive. I asked for directions twice. Notice that I said, I asked, Kevin would have rather continued to walk around in circles. Not me, my feet were starting to hurt even though I had on sensible shoes. We weren't the only ones confused. I saw several other people, passes clutched in their hands, unable to figure it out either so we ended up following them. We kept adding individuals to our little group with each step we took. No one knew where to go. In desperation, all of us entered the paddock and sure enough, the busses pulled in several minutes later about half full so some folks had solved the dilemma (just not us) and we loaded up to go out. 4 We must have gotten lucky and scored a seat on the party bus. A group of gentlemen, 6 guys squeezed into the back row which was intended for no more than 5, had already been celebrating. What they had been celebrating before the civilized hour of 4pm, I can only guess at. There was definitely an international flavor to the group. We had French, German, English and Americans on board and we proved to be a abundantly joyful crowd. We couldn't speak each other's language but we were all there for some easy fun and merriment. We cheered when we passed a vehicle on the track, booed when we were passed. The corner workers stayed out to wave us on and to take pictures. At every apex we hit and those were few and far between, we clapped our approval. Encouraged by our uninhibited enthusiasm, the driver jerked our bus back and forth telling us he was "warming the tires". I can honestly say that a good time was had by all, including a pleasantly surprised Kevin. Before we knew it, we were back at the front straightaway and the ride was over. Our exuberance must have made quite the impression because arriving back at the hotel sometime after midnight, our driver saw us come in to the lobby and stopped to wish us a good night. Let's hope it was a good impression, just in case we want to go back again in two years. Patrice AUGUST 2016 5 The summer of 2016 is off to a running start with so many club events — it is hard for me to keep track of them all! The month of July is always jammed and August is looking equally as hectic. What a delicious dilemma for the club. As soon as the Fourth of July celebrations had ended, a merry group of bourbon lovers charged off the following weekend to visit a few distilleries in the motherland of Kentucky. When the concept of a bourbon trail trip was floated last year, it was met with so much interest that the trip had to be split up into two trips. Hal and Linda Grossglass led the initial bourbon trail adventure and they managed to keep 6 cars together for the weekend. The second trip was led by Gerhard Hillmann and he had 10 cars to manage. Everyone Bruce Schwartz and Betsy MacDonell stayed at a unique destination: the restored Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. This is the largest private collection of original structures and is surrounded by 3,000 acres of conserved farmland, native prairies and forests. The buildings have been beautifully restored and updated for modern hotel amenities but the feeling is still very Shaker, which is utilitarian and plain. We dined at their period restaurant for breakfast and dinner (delicious!), and the gathering rooms were very handy for bourbon and socializing on arrival and tour days! Visiting the distilleries was really fun as well as informative! The three that we visited were: Four Roses, Woodford Reserve and Wild Turkey. They each had similarities but it was finding the differences that made the trip fun. I am now a Four Roses bourbon fan after experiencing their tour! A big thank you to Gerhard for setting up a wonderful way to spend several days with fellow club members and their carefully selected companions! The July Third Thursday event was held at Leatherlips Yacht Club, a location coordinated by Jose and Kathy Isern again this year. The setting on the Scioto River was beautiful and presented a lovely introduction to many of the club members who came out to check out the scene. The food-truck idea continues to be the answer for food at these events due to their growing popularity. Everyone had fun despite the heat and humidity of July in Columbus! The August event is also on the water — this time it will be located at the Hoover Sailing Club with Dave Stetson as the host at this new location! The penultimate event in July took place in Granville. Porsches to Ohio was another super success this year! The welcome party on Friday was a total blast. Picture this: A weather pattern that threatened rain all afternoon but never happened, two local food trucks, tables and chairs under club pop up tents spread out in the front of the College Town House, and beer and wine served out of 6 the club trailer. The early birds to registration had a real treat this year! But the best part of the evening was when event sponsor Bruce Schwartz and his staff from Stoddard drove in with four beautiful older model 911’s in an array of bright colors into the heart of the party! The welcome party was rolling along so well that we had to shut it down at 8PM so we could get organized for the big day. The weather continued to be threatening, and it did give way to rain in the early morning. But we did not see a drop of precipitation during the show and the cloud cover did help keep the temperatures within a manageable range. According to our Chairman Bill Slone, the total registration was around 235 participants this year. This is fabulous for MORPCA, and Porsches in general, due to the competing local car events that weekend. The organization and effort put forth here really showed how well our club members are at putting on these big events! The various posts on our Facebook page show the magnitude of this awesome event. Bill Slone sweated the details during the planning process and had timely help by key club members. There will be a full write-up and formal thankyou’s to all that facilitated another wonderful “Casual Porsche Party” in this edition of DOS. As we look forward to several more events on the MOR calendar, it's exciting to note that the Driver’s Education event at Indy has been sold out for a second time! Kevin Hennessy and Mike Stoner have tweaked the details to be able to perform the necessary Technical Inspection at the track on Thursday night — thanks, guys! This change is huge because now the focus on early Friday morning will be all about driving. They continue to refine these event details to enhance the overall experience. I can’t wait to be a part of it again! The 50th Anniversary party is shaping up! Former PCA President Manny Albin will be attending and will share his unique perspective on the club from the national level. The event will be all Sunday afternoon, August 25th, with scheduled announcements and events to keep everyone busy inside the OSU airport hanger. There will be an area for members to bring and share their memorabilia and a silent auction of some valuable posters. Keep an eye on your inbox for an Eventbrite invitation. Hope to see you at an event soon! Betsy AUGUST 2016 Chip Chip Henderson Henderson MOR MOR Vice Vice President President It has been said that auto racing has a lot in common with downhill skiing. I have to agree with this statement. The balance, edge control, vision and momentum management is very similar to tracking a car. I'm not much of a skier, but I do like to get out on the slopes now and then just to prove that I can still do it. My style is more like a Yeti falling down a mountain than anything you see on TV, but I get it. The thrill of speed and danger is intoxicating. To be honest though, what scared me was turn four. This is another blind, very fast, left-hand sweeper. On approach, the track drops away out of sight then descends about forty stories into a short braking zone and into a uphill hairpin. TV and videos do not do it justice. It is insane. Oh, and the locals tell you not to brake before entry - "just a slight lift off the throttle is all you need." Yeah right. No matter how hard I tried, my brain could not convince my right foot to not to hit the chicken pedal before diving into the turn. I tried it once, but that was on the warm-up lap and even that was scary. The turn reminded me of skiing, as you crest over the hill the steering would get really light and the car felt right on the edge. Just at the Some race tracks remind me point you think all hope is lost, the car takes a set of skiing more than others and aided by a slight positive camber, you get especially those with a lot of back hard on the throttle and rocket down the Franz Klammer elevation change. Mid Ohio is a pretty good hill. At one point I stole a quick glance at the speedo - 110 example of this. So is Road America and Watkins mph and accelerating. At the bottom of the the hill the Glen. Last week I had the chance to drive the at the Canadian entry into the double-apex hairpin looms like a wall of asphalt in the Tire Motorsport Park - or Mosport as it has been called for windshield. Brake hard, downshift and car goes to full compression many years with the Upper Canada Region of the PCA. Located as you set up for the turns 5a & 5b - the Moss Hairpin. This turn just northeast of Toronto and within sight of Lake Ontario, 3-4-5 series reminded me of Franz Klammer during his gold medal CTMP is a wickedly fast, undulating gem of a track. Half of the run at the 76' Olympics - basically a controlled fall. 10 turns are blind - meaning you have no idea what awaits you My words do not do this track justice. If you love a challenging track around the bend until you get to the apex - already at full throttle. - or a great downhill ski run, you have to experience the Canadian This track demands a lot of Tire Motorsport commitment. The great Sir Jackie Park for yourself. Stewart once said "Don't push the Will you need to throttle down until you are sure you bring some adult don't have to lift it back up" (maybe he diapers? It said that - I'm not sure. Just go with it.) Depends. (sorry, At CTMP, this is a real challenge. Turn bad dad joke) two, considered one of the toughest turns in North America, is a stupid fast blind left-hand sweeper that falls I'll see you at Indy! away after the first apex. By the time you get to the second apex you are at Chip warp speed desperately hoping the car doesn't fly off the track into something hard. The margin of error is slim. After my first session, I considered picking up some adult diapers. MOR Members at Mosport Matt Coffman, Bruce Wentworth, Chip Henderson 7 “A Casual” P2O® Weekend Bill Slone P2O® Chairperson With a record number of “day of” registrations, and a sizable crowd that stayed the entire day, the 12th edition of P2O® was the best one yet. Presented by Stoddard Authentic Parts, P2O® continued the tradition of “A Casual Porsche Party”. The weekend started with “A Casual Friday Reception”, this year held on the front lawn of The College Town House. The setting proved to Photo by John Morrison full of event information and t-shirts. The Marylynn’s Row registered cars received premium parking in the Granville Town Square. In addition to the premium parking, $100 of the Marylynn’s Row registration fee goes directly to charity. be popular with both the attendees and organizers. When the P2O® Chairperson refused to look at the radar, the rain held off, with the evening weather being pleasant, encouraging casual conversation among the trees. Two food trucks, Moe’s Original BBQ and Mai Chau Vietnamese inspired street food provided dinner for the guests, along a selection of wines, beers and complementary water provided by the club. The highlight of the evening was when Bruce Schwartz and his Stoddard Authentic Parts crew arrived with 4 vintage Porsches: a 1969 912 Soft Window Targa (of which only 9 were made that year), a 1977 911S in Speedway Green, a 1978 911SC Targa, and a 1982 911SC. The cars were parked in the circular driveway surrounding the reception area, allowing for easy spectator viewing. Photo by John Morrison Saturday dawned with an early morning fog, which led to partially overcast skies and temperatures in the mid 80’s. The weather was a welcome relief to the previous two week’s HHH…hazy, hot, and humid! The morning was busy, with early Porsche arrivals getting prime parking spots (read “shady”), vendors setting up their tents, and everyone getting a “Goodie Bag” 8 While visitors were busy viewing all the Porsches, entrants were busy deciding which Porsches they would vote for. P2O® has always been a “People’s Choice” format. The awards are based on popular votes, not concours judges scrutinizing each car. Besides the Top 50 awards, there was also a special Christopher Carlson Foundation award. This trophy, started in 2015, is awarded to the car selected by the young parking volunteers. This year the Granville area Boy Scouts helped park the Porsches, then picked their favorite car. The Top 50 and CCF awards are listed below. After a busy morning, lunch at one of the many local Granville restaurants, more viewing and shopping in the early afternoon, the awards were announced. A special presentation was made to Bruce Schwartz, whose Stoddard Authentic Parts helped make the weekend possible. The weekend concluded with a Sunday morning drive through the Licking County winding roads. The final stop was at the Velvet Ice Cream Ye Olde Mill in Utica, where the Sunday Drive participants began the difficult task of selecting which of the many flavors to order! Plans are already underway for 2017. Watch the P2O website and Die Offene Strasse for details! Mike photo by Doug Harris I’ve been writing autocross articles for about 7 years for the newsletter but I have never had to report on one this hot and humid. I’m still sweating onto the keyboards 2 days later. And even more surprisingly we had 28 cars show up to enjoy the track, heat and humidity. We had a nice variety of Porsches, plenty of 911’s both air cooled and water cooled, quite a few Caymans, 928, 944 and even a Cayenne. On the non-Porsche side we saw Vipers, Miata, S2000, Challenger, Opel, Corvettes, an old Ford Mustang and a couple of VW’s. It was fun to see the wider variety of cars and drivers. photo by Doug Harris Results photo by Doug Harris While the temperatures launched upward to the mid 90’s and the humidity levels were through the roof, we got in 11 runs which I think was enough for everyone. The course lay was pretty quick except for a few tricky gates at the beginning and a very tight finish. We use two sections of banking and most of the infield. The transitions from the infield to banking were mostly smooth and created some fast times. I received many comments on how much fun the back transition was from the back banking to the infield. During the month of July, we had 18 members in 10 cars make the run! Gerhard Hillmann, David Stetson, Betsy and Parker MacDonell, Jim Davis and Jennifer McCain, Jose and Kathy Isern, David and Marsha Hayden, Todd and Stacey Diller, Patty Morgan and Tom Jones, Joe and Julie Billmaier, and, Mike and Lisa Doseck. To begin our adventure we met up Friday afternoon for a paddleboat ride on the Kentucky river. It was hot and humid but as the boat started moving we got a little relief from a breeze. It was a very relaxing and beautiful ride that gave some history and background about the river and surrounding area. Our accommodations were at the historic Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is a landmark destination that shares 3,000 acres of discovery in the spirit of the Kentucky Shakers. Shake Village is home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States between 1805 and 1910. There was live local music and cocktails when we arrived. We enjoyed dinner together Friday evening at The Trustees’ Table, and dined on traditional favorites and seasonal Kentucky dishes. Steeped in tradition, the Trustees’ Table’s menu celebrates Shaker Village’s roots by featuring dishes made of seasonal ingredients from their garden and local farmers. The next morning we gathered after breakfast and drove some rolling, curvy country roads to Four Roses Distillery. I must admit, 9:45 am is the earliest I have ever had bourbon! After the tour and some time in the gift shop, we caravanned to Woodford Reserve. 18 Gerhard Hillmann Tour Guide The Woodford Reserve tour is beautiful, but a little like Disneyland, not very authentic. After enjoying lunch at Woodford Reserve, we had time for a nice drive before our final tour at Wild Turkey. David Stetson and I were the only two “bachelors” on the trip so we rode together on Saturday as the leaders of the pack. David pulled up a map on his phone and navigated us on a fantastic trip through beautiful countryside. Things did get a little dicey when one road kept getting narrower and narrower, eventually turning into a gravel road. Fortunately this did not go on for too long before it turned to tarmac again. As soon as we were on pavement again, we found the road completely blocked by an enormous semi, moving a couple into their new home. We all had to drive through their front yard to make it around the truck. David and I were sure Jim Davis was going to cuss us out as he has a brand new, black 911 that he is rather particular about. We decided to tell our good friend that we took that route so Joe and Julie Billmaier could experience the capabilities of their Macan. Our worries were for not, Jim was a good sport about it. The tour at Wild Turkey was very authentic. It is a huge facility with massive warehouses full of barrels of aging bourbon. We returned to Shaker Village in time for more cocktails and live music before another delicious dinner. Sunday, several of us explored Shaker Village while some headed west to visit a few more distilleries. A great time was had by all and I would highly recommend a visit to the region. " Bourbon helps me appreciate the smaller things in life, like shot glasses." "Bourbon is liquid sunshine." "Keep your friends close & your Bourbon closer." " If you climb in the saddle, be ready for the ride." " Bourbon is the answer, regardless of the question." Captions provided by quotegram.com. I'm not bright enough to come up with these on my own-Ed 19 April 1989 Terry Mason, newsletter editor, wrote in "The Last Lap" about his time in Norway. The law in Norway for driving under the influence was that you lost your license for life. Terry commented that the law must have been effective, based on the number of drunks either on bicycles or stumbling about. West Germany had strict DUI laws as well. Terry had seen police waiting in cars outside of beer halls and party houses waiting to arrest anyone attempting to drive while intoxicated. August 1989 The MOR July board meeting was held at Harry Mullin's home. Nancy Jackson reported that the scrapbook to compete in the "Region of the Year" contest had been forwarded for judging at Parade. Dee Clark reported membership at 360. A drawing was made from the general questionnaire returns, with Michael and Marilyn Hickey winning a Cross pen and pencil set with the Porsche emblem. December 1989 Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has been completely resurfaced. Plans are being made to walk the course and see all the improvements. After the brisk walk, a stop at Buck's for a burger is planned. John Mason sent a letter to the track requesting two dates for drivers' school. Members were reminded that there will be an April drivers' school for women. Steve Southard, Zone Representative, expressed concern about the future of IRAC competitions, as the number of cars entering each event has dropped from 40-50 just a few years ago to 20 cars currently. 20 AUGUST 2016 NEW MEMBERS Tony Asby Powell, OH Transfer In to MOR: None MEMBER: 7/1/16 Roger & Linda Blackwell Columbus, OH MEMBER: 7/1/16 Pat Blake Lancaster, OH MEMBER: 7/1/16 James Clemans Delaware, OH MEMBER: 7/1/16 James DAndrea Marysville, OH MEMBER: 7/1/16 Wolfgang Teran New Albany, Ohio MEMBER: 7/1/16 Transfer Out of MOR: ANNIVERSARIES 40 YEARS Martha Shaw C Yaczo Charles Bennett J Kearney Kathleen Riggs 37 37 32 31 31 30 YEARS C & Sandra Campbell J & Janet Bock Mark Baranoski Emily Eby Chip & Sheila Henderson 25 22 21 21 21 20 YEARS Matias & Sarah Bonnier Logan & Lon Herman Jason & Stephanie Brua Geary & Judith Willis Sue Snyder 19 19 18 18 17 Gregory & Janice Adams Jeremy Lucas Jeffrey & Karen Dupler Stephen & Elayne Gunder Derek Strong Nicholas & Lani Davakis John Berger Jeff & Lorie Copeland Bryan & Kris Dunlap 15 15 14 14 14 13 12 12 11 10 YEARS Brandon Davis Pete & Steve Schaeffer James & Deborah Tulloss John & Susan Fearon Stanley Ross 8 8 8 7 7 OVER 5 YEARS 21 Around The Zone By Michael Soriano Zone 4 Representative Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members, It has been a very busy summer for us here in Zone 4, and all of our regions’ social calendars are at full speed. There are opportunities to participate in a multitude of events, whether it’s car shows and concours, driving tours and dinners, autocrosses, or DEs. I recently attended A R P C A ’ s PVGP Chair Ed Rice, Zone 4 premiere event, Representative Michael Soriano, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and ARPCA President Mark Hanson at Schenley Park, the nation’s largest vintage race, and one of only two vintage races that occur on public streets in the world, the other being in Monaco. The 3-day event began with a tour through the beautiful countryside of western Pennsylvania concluding at the Kick-Off Welcome Party for visitors from out of town. 22 Everyone attending received a gift from the evening’s sponsor PCNA. In addition to the vintage races, there is an international car show, catered meals, and some great prizes. Nearly 200 Porsches participated in the car corral. During the weekend, I presented the Region President Mark Hanson with items to commemorate ARPCA’s 55th Anniversary. A few weeks later, I attended P20. For the 5th year in a row, the event was held in Granville, Ohio, just east of Columbus. Friday evening there was a reception at Dennison University’s College House. Early Saturday morning, with the cooperation from the City of Granville, Broadway Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, was transformed into the perfect setting for the nearly 300 Porsches that lined the street. The event sponsored by Stoddard raised money for a number of the region’s charities. This year I registered my car and was pleasantly surprised when I tied for 3rd place. On Sunday, I attended the Zone 4 Concours at the Concours d’Elegance of America at St. John’s in Plymouth, MI. This is the 3rd year that Zone 4 members have attended this event. The Concours d’Elegance of America is widely regarded as one of the country’s best concours events featuring a world class exhibition of classic, rare, and exotic automobiles. The judges for our concours who graciously donated their time to make this event possible, were trained at last year’s Zone 4 National Concours Judges School. A great deal of hard work goes into making these events the successes that they are, and to all of the volunteers, I want you to AUGUST 2016 know that your efforts are not going unnoticed. One of the goals I set when I first became Zone Representative was to have Zone 4 regions work together in order to provide even more opportunities for our members, and I was very pleased to see that each of these activities attracted participation from members from regions throughout the zone. The hospitality and camaraderie displayed at these events confirms that we are on the right track. As we continue to enjoy our very busy driving season, there are a number of wonderful events being offered throughout the zone. Please remember to check your region’s website and newsletter, as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org for the most up to date list of events available to you. Nearly 60 years ago, the racing world was knocked sideways by a lively, mid-engine roadster— the 718 RSK. It swept past the establishment, capturing winners’ podium after winners’ podium at places like Targa Florio and Le Mans. For those who raced it, it was the epitome of Porsche fun. Today, that spirit and mid-engine layout return with the new 718 Boxster. Near-perfect balance, unrivaled agility, and a new flat-four turbocharged engine give it all the speed and power necessary to quickly make up for lost 26 time. Porsche. There is no substitute.
