FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions by Catholics Questions are often asked about marriage in the church for the Catholic individual: Do we have to me married by a priest? Can we be married on a beach/destination/back yard/ country club? How do we plan the ceremony? Who can serve as witnesses? What readings may we use? Why can’t I have “Here Comes the Bride”? In addressing only the first question, all Catholics are bound by canonical law to be married in a church with the priest, deacon or bishop present to witness the vows. It is possible to get a dispensation (or an exemption), but there are a variety of concerns that must be addressed. The best thing to do is to talk to the priest at your parish and find out what you need for your particular case. Call and make an appointment - don’t ask after a Mass when there are a number of people talking to him and asking questions! As a Catholic, you should take the time to let the priest know of your intention to marry even if you are planning on being married at another church perhaps where your spouse-to-be worships. This is an important step in your life journey - take time to do it the right way! Stay tuned for more information on the other questions! Knights of Columbus Event Schedule Fr. McNelis Council 1481 MEETINGS WILL RESUME IN SEPTEMBER! HAVE A BLESSED AUGUST! TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 14, 2016 TRUTH TO POWER First Reading — They took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern (Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10). Psalm — Lord, come to my aid! (Psalm 40). Second Reading — Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:1 -4). Gospel — I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing (Luke12:49-53). ADULT: When has living the gospel put me at odds with another person or them at odds with me? CHILD: Have I done the right things even when my friends do not agree with me or go along with me? THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. UNDERSTANDING and FOLLOWING In the readings today, we see the prophet Jeremiah withstanding harsh treatment, but yet he continued to speak about God and what the people needed to do to follow God. In Hebrews we hear about the suffering servants of God who are like the prophet Jeremiah. Their perseverance reminds us to “run the race, and keep focused on Jesus”. The Hebrews were not being physically persecuted, but were struggling against the sin of indifference. (Does that sound familiar?) In the gospel, Jesus acknowledges that those who follow Him risk even harsher difficulties—division of families and rupture among the people. Not everyone is comfortable following Jesus and what discord this may bring upon them. God’s word can both comfort and challenge. Living out that word in a prophetic way can provide us with comfort—but also with times of profound challenge. PRAYER In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, you have spoken your word to us. At times it comforts. At times it challenges. At all times help me to hear your voice and give me the courage of your Holy Spirit to live the words I hear. Amen. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Daily Readings—Week of August 14, 2016 Sunday: Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sunday: TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Ps 40:2-4, 18; Heb 12:1-4; Lk 12:49-53 THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Vigil: 1 Chr 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2; Ps 132:6-7, 9-10, 13-14; 1 Cor 15:54b-57; Lk 11:27-28 Day: Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Ps 45:10-12, 16; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56 ST.
