CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY & CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
The Catholic University of America is unique among universities in the in the United States - even among Catholic universities. Established by the Vatican and the U.S. bishops in 1887,
it is the national university of the Catholic Church. It is proud
to have nearly one third of the U.S. bishops as alumni, along
with more than 12,400 living priests and religious from around
the world. In Washington D.C. the University provides an educational based in Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000
students through its 12 schools - that include arts and sciences,
music, engineering, philosophy, social work, law and business
in addition to ecclesiastical degrees in canon law and theology.
Next weekend, we will be taking up the National Collection
for The Catholic University of America. Your support will
enable Catholic University to expand its impact in preparing
the next generation of leadership for our Church and nation We
appreciate your generosity. You can learn more at collection.cua.edu.
PLEASE HELP US FIND OUR OWNERS!
We are lost and forgotten plates, containers and other items that
our owners used to bring cookies and other food to the church
for past events. We can be found on the table in the social hall
near the left side wall close to the refrigerator. The CDA
thanks you for helping us to get home! Also, there are several
coats on the coat rake in the social hall - if you are missing a
coat you may want to check there!
PICTORIAL DIRECTORY
We are planning a St. Bernard 170th Anniversary 2017 and a new parish pictorial directory.
The Evangelization Committee has made several contacts to various companies regarding this
project. Our goal is to complete this by the
summer of 2017. We would like to involve all members of the
parish in this endeavor. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping with this project, please contact Eugene Thomas
at 724-465-4918 or Rose in the parish office at 724-465-2210,
Ext. 110. You may also e-mail Eugene at [email protected].

“SHARE THE JOY”
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul needs volunteers for the
“Adopt an Elder” program. This is only a monthly commitment involving a visit to a Nursing Home or Personal Care
Home to comfort the sick and lonely. Please plan to attend an
informational meeting at St. Bernard Church to find out more
about this joyful ministry. Call Terri Tedeschi at 724-3884006, if interested in attending the meeting Wednesday, September 28th at 6:30 PM. Current volunteers are welcome to
attend the meeting and share experiences.
Please remember in your prayers the departed soul of: Mary Micco, wife of Ray Micco, who was a parishioner here. We extend our condolences & prayerful support for the bereaved family….
May she rest in peace!
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL THRIFT STORE

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT de PAUL QUARTERLY REPORT
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference had another successful
quarter, thanks to your support. The number of people we
served increased by 26%. This translates into helping 188 families. Our financial help per family also increased by 26%. We
have also started ‘twinning” with Fr. Tim’s parish in Brownsville. Twinning means we are sharing some of our financial
resources with them, similar to the way Greensburg helps us
with utility revenue during the winter months. You have been
very supportive of our Thrift Store and with your donations
directly to our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. We sincerely
feel you are reaching out to the poor with your constant support.
We are still visiting the elderly in the nursing homes. Our visits are less compared to last year because we have lost some
volunteers. We could use your help! Please contact Terri
Tedeschi at 724-388-4006, if you can help once a month making a visit. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a wonderful
way to evangelize and you would find it very gratifying.
Please contact Chuck Spadafora at 724-801-6029, if you are
interested. You could attend our monthly meeting to see how
we work. We meet at St. Bernard Church social hall the 2nd
Wednesday of the month at 6 PM. God Bless you for all you
do!

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions by Catholics
Questions are often asked about marriage in the church for the
Catholic individual:
Can we be married on a beach, a special destination, in our back yard, at a country club, hotel ballroom?
Who can serve as witnesses?
What readings may we use?
Why can’t I have “Here Comes the Bride”?
The short answer is NO. As a Catholic Christian, you are
bound by canonical law to be married in your home church.
However, permission may be granted for you to be married in
another Catholic Church. This would be in the case of needing
a larger church to accommodate the guests, using the college
chapel where you met or in the home parish of your spouse-tobe. Canon 1118.1 allows for this.
Canon 1118.2 states that a bishop can allow for a change of
venue to another suitable space. It would seem that you could
request this of a bishop and you might be able to be married at
a destination other than a church. The circumstances for this to
occur are very specific. Since the Church views marriage as a
sacrament most bishops will not give this permission. They are
concerned with the sacramental nature of the wedding and believe that the parish church is the suitable place for the reception of sacraments. Again, it is always best to talk to your
priest as you are making this important step in your life.

AUGUST 21, 2016
LIP SERVICE OR LIFE SERVICE?
First Reading — Brothers and sisters of every race and language will be brought to
Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21).
Psalm — Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117).
Second Reading — Be strong and endure your trials as the “discipline” of a loving God,
for
it will result in the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13).
Gospel — People from east and west, north and south, recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke
13:22-30).
The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.
ADULT: How do I give life service—more than mere lip service—to living the way of Jesus?
CHILD: How do my actions proclaim that I believe in Jesus Christ?
DISCIPLINE
It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and
relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to
follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or
a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not
from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in
us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are
there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In recent decades, attention has shifted away from headgear as a symbol of a bishop’s authority to a more substantial symbol: the
chair, called the cathedra. The word comes from the Latin word for a chair with armrests. It is exactly the reason why dining room
sets were marketed in this country a few years ago with only one chair with armrests, the captain’s chair. For us, the cathedra is a
sign of the teaching authority of the bishop. We inherited the symbolism of the chair from Roman civil life in the fourth century. A
church that houses a cathedra is called a cathedral, and the chair may be used only by the bishop of that diocese. Priests who preside
at liturgy there must use a different presidential chair. You may find the cathedra in its most traditional place at the head of the
apse, or against a side wall as was favored in medieval times, but increasingly bishops are locating the cathedra in the midst of the
assembly of the faithful. In the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, visitors will find no barrier to their trying out the cathedra, an
expression of hospitality that helps the archbishop be mindful of those whom he serves.

PRAYER
Jesus, we desire to eat and drink in your company for all eternity. Show me the way to live so that, nourished by you, I can feed
others with your all-inclusive and unconditional love. Amen.
