Above all, sperm whales can be seen between March and July, orcas in summer and dolphins the whole year because they are resident species in this section of water, which is only 14 Kilometres and connects the south of Europe with the north of Africa. If you want to watch them, there are several companies in Tarifa offering different types of boats. You will enjoy the morning or afternoon in the middle of the sea, with views over the African continent. nd w Dolphins and whales Cross the Bay of Cádiz Crossing the bay of Cádiz is one of the indispensable appointments. Catamaran trips are very frequent. A pleasant trip from the capital to El Puerto de Santa Maria or Rota. Another suggestive proposal is to go into the Bay by albarco.com and sail under the Carranza bridge before going back to the dock. Looking at Cádiz from the sea, go around its walls and the castle of Santa Catalina until reaching the beach of La Caleta is one of the essential routes. Sailing when the sun sets is one experience that you will never forget. Catamaran: www.cmtbc.es Boat trips: www.albarco.com Beaches Small, large, beautiful, quiet, crowded, with or without waves… the province of Cádiz has 80 beaches to choose what to do, apart from having a walk and sunbathing. There are beaches you should go, even if it is not summer. It is a pleasure to play on the sand and breathe the feeling of freedom that invades us when watching the immensity of the sea. Children are prone to running away and grown-ups to sitting to watch the sight, but it brings a smile to all of us. There are cliffs, woods, marshlands, lighthouses, salt lakes between the beaches with views over the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. s B eac h e 5 Water Pa rks Water parks Aqualand Bay of Cádiz, located in El Puerto de Santa Maria is the largest water park in the province, full of toboggans, rapids, backwaters and whirlpools to enjoy the water. In fact, there are several parks for children to play in facilities just made for them and young people to let their adrenaline out. Bahía Park Bahía de Algeciras boasts about having the largest Jacuzzi in Andalucía. In both parks, there are wave pools, restaurants and picnic areas to enjoy the sun in the funniest parks. Facilities such as kamikaze, crazy race or devil tail give us an idea that water and speed are inseparable companions of emotions. www.aqualand.es www.bahiapark.com 6 Island of Sancti Petri When summer comes, we should have a boat trip at dusk. Boats departure from the port of Sancti Petri of Chiclana and go into the sea to see how the sun sets in front of the mythical island of Hercules, who separated Europe from Africa. It is not a common sunset. In the Costa de la Luz the sun becomes an incandescent red ball and sinks slowly in the sea. This is a great opportunity if you like taking pictures. www.albarco.com You can also disembark in the island to go to concerts, shows for children, guided and dramatised tours to know this spot better where mythology places the temple of Hercules. The best is to contact the tourist offices of Chiclana and San Fernando or www.loggia.es that has been responsible for the custody, access control and tours in the island and the castle of Sancti Petri since 2011. fS ancti P et ri Island o www.turismochiclana.es www.turismosanfernando.org 7 d Chil The city of Boys an Girls The paradise of zip-lines, toboggans, airbeds, roller skates and tricycles. It is not a common park; it has been designed to spend the whole day. Dimensions are like three football fields. It is the largest park in the province and located in Jerez. Workshops and courses are also offered in the Leisure Centre and Family Support. www.venalaciudad.com. You will find recreational areas, outdoors children’s parks, ballparks and the pink-colour world for the girls who want to become a princess for one day with centres like Princelandia all over the province, both in towns and villages. Tourist offices will inform you about their locations. u s, o i c i l De elicious D De Is there anything fresher than hot bread? In El Bosque, there is a water mill where children can learn how to make bread, true bread. A mill where going inside is a pleasure, with its thick walls. An old-fashioned way mill to know how bread was made in the 18th century, from the wheat milling to the dough baking. It is called Molino de Abajo and you can take away the freshly-made bread or it can be taken to your hotel. licious elic ious, Bread and cheese taste like a kiss D 8 ks Children´s Parks n´s Par re It is even more delicious if you eat it with chacina (cold cuts) from the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cádiz) because the production of blood sausages and spicy sausages (chorizo and salchichón) is part of the culinary heritage of the province, specially of the Sierra. Cheese has always been told as tasting like a kiss. In the province, chesses are accumulating more and more prizes, so knowing how they are made is a good option. In the Finca (estate) Las Hazuelas in Grazalema www.pringon.com you can participate in a cheese workshop and try the yogurt. The Quesos Artesanos (traditionally crafted cheese) El Bosqueño www. quesoselbosque.com, in the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cádiz), has an interpretation centre and cheese tastings and workshops are organized. Everybody in the area knows about payoya goats, native of the Sierra de Cádiz (mountain chain of Cádiz), which are fed with their mothers’ milk and produce a so tasty cheese. In Rota, www.elbucarito.es, there is a farm and a glazed area from where you can see how cheese is made and if you like, you can become a cheese expert. w he s e e Mus m eu st te T The sweetest Museum The Museum of Honey and Bees of Rancho Cortesano is a sweet and exciting museum, in which you can see how bees work and spend some time being disguised as a beekeeper. This Museum also shows the importance of bees in the pollination process and in the formation of fruits and seeds. In Rancho Cortesano, there is an ecological garden where mangoes, custard apple tress, pear trees, apple trees, almond trees, orange trees and olive trees are grown. There is also a restaurant and a shop where you can buy jars of multi-flower honey, holm oak honey, eucalyptus honey, orange-flower honey, rosemary honey, delights of honey and meloja, pollen, royal jelly and soaps. www.ranchocortesano.net 9 Tavira From the top Tavira Tower The Tavira Tower is located at the top of the old town. From there, the panoramic view dominates everything: the sea, the land and the sky as if it was a boat figurehead. Every effort has its compensation because 160 steps have to be climbed to reach the top. Nobody should leave Cádiz without climbing to the Tavira Tower. It is one of the towers in the city used to control the boats coming to the coast. There are still two hundred towers but this one is the most emblematic. Inside we can find the dark chamber, a curious gadget from where we can see what is happening in real time, what pedestrians are doing outside the Tower and we can see the rooftops of Cádiz. It is like being an authorized spy. www.torretavira.com Chipiona Lighthouse It is 72 metres high and it is the highest lighthouse in Spain and one of the ten highest lighthouses in the world. You need to climb 322 steps to reach its balcony. But it is not only large, but also beautiful and peculiar because of its spiral staircase. It is aero-maritime because its light beam reaches the same distance both in horizontal and vertical and is used to guide ships and airplanes, reaching eighty miles. The tourist office of Chipiona Town Hall organizes guided tours to this guardian of the mouth of the river Guadalquivir, which from its highest point wonderful views from Doñana to the Bay of Cádiz are offered, through Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Chipiona, with its Monasterio (Monastery) de Regla, fishing corrals and the beaches of Costa (Coast) Ballena. 10 w er To Chip i a It was started to be built in 1863 because sailors who usually sailed along the Guadalquivir river, required a lighthouse for them to be guided along the mouth of the longest river in Andalucía, a complicated area where ships usually ran aground. Today’s modern navigation systems will never substitute the lighthouse legend or the illusion children have when counting the flashes that shine every ten seconds in Chipiona. www.turismochipiona.es 11 Lig house ht on Red buses The red bus route starts in the port of Cádiz and there are twelve stops for tourists to visit the Genovés park, Mina square, San Francisco, San Antonio, Mercado de Abastos (food market), the cathedral, San Juan de Dios square or España square. It is said that it is a city tailored to people, not large not small, therefore the best is to have a walk and discover new places in the historic old town, Paseo Marítimo (seafront promenade) or its beaches. b ed use st Tour i s R On the red convertible bus, people fee like closing their eyes and feel the breeze on their faces. There are many places to visit in Cádiz; it is the capital of the province and the oldest capital city in Western Europe. There are many small beautiful squares and elegant buildings so it is worthwhile getting off the bus, having a walk and back to the bus again. 12 trains Tourist trains Arcos, Chiclana, El Puerto de Santa Maria, Olvera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Sotogrande in San Roque, Tarifa and Vejer are provided with a tourist train to comfortably know their most interesting spots. A very attractive route for hiking, cycling, watching the vultures’ nests or contemplating so emblematic trees like the “Chaparro de la Vega”, a 700 year-old holm oak which is more than 13 metres high and declared a natural monument of Andalucía. The Green Track also offers restaurants and accommodation in old stations or in peculiar places such as train wagon-shaped apartments. www.fundacionviaverdedelasierra.com 14 On a donkey or on a mule Early in the morning or at dusk, www.senderos-sierra-plata.es you are guided along the paths of the Strait and the Alcornocales natural parks on calm mules. A funny, amusing and fantastic way of painting the province, describing it through his colours. His feelings for this small place in Andalucía have been titled “El Sur de Romero (the South of Romero)”. A multi-colour destination that is well worth visiting on the Internet and says a lot about him: an extraordinary self-taught artist who still sees his land with the curiosity of children. Immense, fresh and friendly. This is the way Juan sees the province, despite the time and distance, Romero was born in Barbate (Cádiz) in 1964, but he soon moved to Barcelona with his parents. There, he became interested in the magic of illustrations and in the 80´s, with the comics boom, he started to paint cartoons in the Rambles of Barcelona. He left Catalonia and went back home and found his promised land. He expressed all he had dreamed in a blog www.elsurderomero. com. He is its creative director and the house brand but he is also involved in many other projects. Among them, this “Cádiz with the family” for children of all ages, even grandparents, to know the province better and enjoy it. Among his works, it is worth mentioning “Isla Peques (Children Island)”, the children’s section of the tourist portal of San Fernando www.turismosanfernando.org. He has also made book covers “Güichis Ultramarinos y Otras historias cotidianas de la Isla (Güichis Ultramarine and other everyday stories of the Island)” and “El Cinematógrafo (The Cinematograph)”. In 2011 he was awarded the first prize of the poster contest of the Carnival of Barbate and Conil de la Frontera. Currently, he is working on a comic about a picador, a varilarguero of the Isla de León (Lion Island), who works as a garrochista in Jerez in 1808. He continues, with his unlimited imagination, creating historic and everyday characters and even bringing stones to life, because nature and patrimony have another sense from his view: the world, according to Romero. 44 www.cadizturismo.com www.facebook.com/CadizTurismo www.twitter.com/Cadiz_turismo
