Supporting our students
Kirkton Public School continue to
endeavour to create and initiate schemes
and practices that will support our
students.
The P&C continues to provide extra
funding, activities and extra insight into
community perspectives and concerns in
relation to the students;
Parents and staff have worked together to
broaden the communication options as
we now have our newsletter, the school
app, our Facebook page and the website
to advertise happenings and information
relating to school function.
Sporting, cultural, extra curricula and social
opportunities are provided throughout the
year to help expand on student skills,
interests and social awareness;
In school we treat all students as individuals
and strive to develop them to their
potential. Student learning support officers
assist in class and with small groups or
individuals, teachers differentiate the
curriculum and make adjustments of
curriculum delivery according to individual
need.
We are involved with KidsMatter (focus on
mental health) utilising the Bounce Back
program to explore the concepts of
KidsMatter. This focus is also merged with
PBL (positive behaviour for learning) which
gave us our catch phrase of FLORA
(friendship, Learning, opportunity, respect
and achievement) – the concepts of which
are explicitly taught.
School programs, continued training and
development of staff and extra personnel
also support our student learning and
wellbeing. This term we have introduced Mini
Lit to refine literacy skills in our younger
students and a staff member is being trained
in L3 (Language, Learning and Literacy - a
research-based, classroom intervention,
targeting text reading and writing). We are
also involved in the Quality Teaching Rounds
program which is centred on teacher lesson
delivery and strategies.
Also School Counsellors assist staff to support
students and families. All work to create safe,
caring schools, free from violence and
discrimination and can help you or your child
in different ways.
School counsellors are experienced teachers
who have a degree in psychology and
post-graduate qualifications in school
counselling. They work with students of all
ages, and their families, from pre-school to
Year 12. School counsellors work positively
with students, parents or carers and teachers
in a variety of ways.
Their work includes:

counselling students, assisting parents or
carers to make informed decisions
about their child's education

assessing students' learning and
behaviour, assisting schools to identify
and address disabilities that affect
students' learning and liaising with other
agencies
concerned
with
the
well-being of students.
We would like to welcome our new School
Counsellor to KPS. Mrs. Mary–Jane Britten.
Mrs. Britten will be with us for 2016 and
hopefully beyond. We share her with a
number of primary schools as well as
Singleton High School. We hope she enjoys
working with us and meeting our students.

2016 Student Council
Congratulations to those students who
have been elected by their peers to be
members of this year’s Student Council –
Pip, Georgia, Alyssa, Zeb, Millie and Raoul.
They will be working closely with our student leaders to raise money for charities,
providing activities for their peers and
creating a warm, active and friendly
culture for our school. Well done to all!
Parent Teacher Interviews.
The parent/teacher interviews will be held
in Week 8 – 14th, 15th and 16th March, in the
Library.

Year 4/5/6 Monday 14th March

K/1 Tuesday 15th March

Years 2/3 Wednesday 16th March
A form is attached to this newsletter so that
you can give the teachers an indication of
your preferred times for your interview. If
you can return these as soon as possible
return slips with your actual interview time
can be processed and returned to you
quickly to aid your organisation.
The interviews for Years 4/5/6 will again be
a ‘three way’ interview – with the student
involved. This ensures all know and
understand what was discussed in the
interview,
students can give their
perspectives and also begin to take
ownership of their learning.
Cattle Judging
Jago , Max , Ethan, Asha, Alexander, Audrey,
Connor, Jordan, Millie, Ethan, and Raoul
make up our 2016 Cattle Judging Team. The
students have their first experience for the
year at Maitland Show on Friday. They have
been busy trying to learn aspects of bovine
anatomy, analysing the conformation of
cattle
(pictures) and
creating
oral
presentations based on their findings.
Normally students will judge 3 classes of stock
– heifers, bulls and steers. They at times are
required to write answers to questions
relating to the stock. If their assessments and
answers are close to that of the main judge
they may be asked to give an oral
presentation to the crowd to explain their
placings. If they score well across all three
sections (judging, questions, speech) then
they have a great chance of a win.
Good luck to all!
Parent Information Session
Many thanks to those who returned the
survey relating to a possible Parent
Information Session this term.
At this point in time we have only 7 returns
wishing for such a session. If you would like
an information session and haven’t yet
returned the survey please do as a final
decision relating to the provision of this
session will soon be made.
