Mariposa Foundation Summer Scholars Program (Dominican
The Mariposa DR Foundation believes that educating and empowering girls is the solution to ending generational poverty all over the world. Families that are struggling to survive in many communities will place a low value on girls’ education and prioritize domestic responsibilities, often keeping them out of school. When girls are not in control of their lives or their futures, the cycle of poverty continues. Girls are the most powerful force to affect change, with the potential to bring their families with them as they rise above the conditions they were born into. It is our responsibility to share this knowledge, our work, and spread the word to everyone we can. Over the next few years, The Mariposa Center for Girls in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, will expand as a unique learning institution where nonprofit leaders, educators, activists, volunteers and girl champions will convene and co-develop creative solutions to serve girls across the globe. Join us for a unique summer service program to re-imagine the space at The Mariposa Center for Girls and create an interactive learning environment and visual journey into how girls have the unique power to change the world. Program participants will play an integral role in creating the world’s first “Girl Museum”, by girls, for girls and about girls; becoming trailblazers in the international girl movement. During this 20-day program, groups of 5 girls and a teacher from NCGS schools will volunteer during our summer camp, an essential part of our holistic programming for girls in our community. Participants will work closely with their Mariposa peers to research and design permanent, rotating, and interactive exhibits that will form the Girl Museum at the Mariposa Center for Girls in the near future, attracting visitors from around the world to learn about the world’s most powerful force for change – girls. Through hands-on work, excursions and educational workshops with selected readings and films, participants will become immersed in Dominican culture, history and most importantly, will play a critical role in helping to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals that have put girls at the top of the agenda for the next 15 years.
