They are truly the greatest show of athleticism on the face of the earth. So, where we are as the hype starts to build for our Olympians. The US Team and coaches is 555 strong, with a record 292 women. Men’s and Women’s Basketball are as close to locks for gold medals as you can get. Women’s soccer, the defending champions, looks awfully strong, but you can never count out the South Koreans and Japanese. Watch for the emergence of our youngest player Mallory Pugh. She just turned 18, and has already scored three international goals. And then we have Women’s Gymnastics. We are fielding the reigning all around champion from the last Olympics, Gabby Douglas and the current reigning World all-around champion Simone Biles. It is the strongest team we have ever fielded. The US Track and Field Team have another solid group with some great runners and field event athletes. We have Meb Keflezigli, better known as just Meb, running the marathon at age 41 in his fourth Olympics. And Galen Rupp running not only the marathon (winner of our trials), but also the 10,000 meters – shooting for gold after a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics. No one can say enough about our Bernard Lagat, also 41, running in his fifth Olympics, and our hope for gold in the 5,000 meters, where he won our trials. Dropping down to the sprints, both men and women, we’ve got great runners. Our best 100 meter sprinter, Justin Gatlin, is in top form and looks for a great race against the defending champion Usain Bolt, better known as Thunder Bolt. Our women sprinters are awesome. Gone are the days of somewhat stocky sprinters, the modern day sprinter is built like a greyhound. And our best is English Gardner in the 100. I am taking her for the gold and breaking the world record held by Florence Griffith-Joyner (USA), 10.49 (1988). And last but not least is the Decathlon, the winner recognized as the best athlete in the world. Once again Ashton Eaton is going for gold. All in all, we have got one of the strongest Track and Field teams in history and they are looking to win more than the nine golds we got in the last games. I have saved the best for last and that is swimming. I am only going to mention two swimmers. Michael Phelps is in his fourth Olympics at age 31. He has so many gold medals already, 18, that he cannot even wear them all. He may not win any gold this time around, but I am confident he will win some. It will be the close-out to a wonderful career for the US and the greatest Olympian ever. And my favorite female swimmer Katie Ledecky, the reigning gold medal champion in the 800 meters. She is so good that she holds the top ten times in this event. One word describes her: Unstoppable. Who are the unknowns? The Chinese. You never know what they are going to do. They can come out of nowhere in any particular sport when four years before no one expected anything. So hang on to your hats and get ready for an absolutely exciting Olympic Games. If it is quiet, you might be able hear me cheering all the way from Florida. COL John J. Braham, IV (USA, Retired) CUSTOM as low as $8 229-253-1299 T-SHIRTS .50 ea. must buy doz. Commissioner John Koskinen wrote in a July 22 letter to Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn that the issue has been “forwarded” to the IRS “Exempt Organizations Examinations” program in Dallas. “This program considers all referrals and will send you a separate acknowledgement letter when it receives your information,” he wrote, in a letter first reported by The Daily Caller. It’s unclear whether the agency might take any further action. The letter noted that, under the law, they could not reveal “any actions we may take on this information.” Asked for comment on the referral, the agency said in a statement: “The IRS receives referrals from a variety of sources. We forward all referrals to the appropriate area for consideration of whether there are issues that justify further review. We have standard processes and procedures we follow when we receive information or referrals from outside groups. Due to federal privacy protections, the IRS cannot comment on individual taxpayers or organizations.” The request for an examination came in a July 15 letter from 64 House Republicans including Tennessee Rep. Blackburn. In the runup to the Democratic convention where Hillary Clinton was nominated for president Tuesday, they asked the FBI, IRS and Federal Trade Commission to examine the dealings of the foundation. “From the information we have been able to gather, it appears the Clinton Foundation is a ‘pay to play’ sham charity that needs to be investigated,” Blackburn said in a statement on Tuesday. “The Clintons have used their Foundation to personally enrich themselves at the expense of American foreign policy. At a minimum, the Foundation’s tax-exempt status needs to be reviewed and revoked immediately.” As reported Monday by FoxNews.com, their letter focused primarily on three unresolved controversies, brought up by Peter Schweizer’s book, “Clinton Cash” and New York Times reporting in 2015. Willis 13527 Moultrie Hwy., Barney Getting lost is something that comes naturally to me. At times I feel as though I was born with no sense of direction or the ability to use a compass. Once, while driving my sons to a birthday party, they could sense I didn’t know where I was going. As I looked at the slip of paper in my hand that contained directions and an address, and looked from side to side at a four-way stop sign, not knowing what to do next, my eldest son said, “Are we lost yet, Dad?” He knew if I wasn’t I soon would be. His confidence was inspiring! Fortunately, a police officer on a motorcycle saw me looking at the piece of paper and offered to help me. With compassion he asked, “May I help you, Sir?” Of course I said, “Yes,” and with a great sign of relief gave him the address of the party. He gave me careful and complete instructions. Then, looking at me and realizing I had no idea what he was talking about said with great compassion, “Never mind. Follow me, I’ll get you there.” And it worked. In a few moments I looked at the name and address on the mail box and knew that I had arrived at my destination safely. In the maze of life with its constant confusion and complex choices we often need help. David said, “I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me.” Jesus, realizing our lost condition said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. Follow me.” God keeps those safe who follow His directions. That’s a predictable response anytime a controversy comes up about the Clintons, Blackburn said. Home: (229) 859-2073 Fax: 229-859-2096 D&D MOBILE HOME Need your mobile home moved? This is about the rule of law and many times the Clintons feel like they can skirt having closer inspection of their activities by claiming that it is a conspiracy.” The letter detailed how former President Bill Clinton accepted $16.5 million as honorary chancellor at Laureate International Universities, founded by Douglas Becker. The company also gave between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation. Bloomberg News reported the U.S. Agency for International Development, an appendage of the State Department, gave more than $55 million to Becker’s International Youth Foundation, while Hillary Clinton was the secretary of state. A Laureate spokesperson pushed back, telling FoxNews.com, “Allegations of any quid pro quo between Laureate, the International Youth Foundation and the Clintons are completely false. … IYF and Laureate Education are independent organizations. Laureate has never received any funds from IYF.” The spokesperson pointed to PolitiFact and Washington Post Fact Checker articles on the issue, while IYF CEO William Reese stated in an open letter Meets each Thursday at 12 noon in the Presbyterian Home Board Room that Becker was the board chairman, but the organization has received State Department funding since 1999. On another front, Uranium One Chairman Ian Telfer donated a total of $2.35 million to the foundation – and the New York Times reported that former President Clinton once received $500,000 for a speech in Moscow from a company promoting Uranium One stock. As secretary of state, Hillary Clinton was among the U.S. officials that approved the Uranium One sale to Russian investors. Uranium One did not respond to phone and email inquiries. However, citing a complex timeline, PolitiFact ranked the accusation of a quid pro quo as “mostly false.” The fact (continued on page 11) Kitty Love Rescue, Valdosta www.kittyloverescue.com 229-834-0765 Free Classified Ads (229) 735-2111 e-mail: [email protected] checks on both companies relate only to past comments by Donald Trump and not the House Republicans’ letter. The foundation’s website suggests contributors do not receive anything in return aside from the knowledge they are making a difference. The FBI has stayed mum on the subject, though, even after closing the email investigation with no charges filed. During testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, FBI Director James Comey responded, “I’m not going to comment on the existence or nonexistence of other investigations,” when asked if the bureau was investigating the Clinton Foundation. As for the questions over the 501(c)(3) filing, the tax filing for the organization from December 1997 described the organization as running a presidential library, maintaining archives and doing research. “No mention is made of conducting activities outside of the United States, which is one of the codes included in the IRS ‘Application for Recognition of Exemption’ in effect at that time,” the letter says. “As a result, the Foundation’s global initiatives appear to be unlawful pursuant to the IRS code.” FoxNews.com’s Fred Lucas and Judson Berger and Fox News’ Peter Doocy, Tamara Gitt and Mike Emanuel contributed to this report. A Clinton Foundation source, though, rejected reporting that the letter indicates an investigation. “Nowhere does this letter say that there’s an investigation, or that the IRS is even considering an investigation,” the source said.
