“Catholic Eyes”
What does the world look like, with its ongoing hustle and bustle of life, through strictly Catholic eyes? Anyone reading
this will immediately allow their minds to wander to whatever Catholic theology and history they know. They, at the least,
may assume that such sources would have to be the makeup of the answer in any case. But it’s not. I am going to suggest
that the answer to this question can just as easily be found in literature.
Let’s consider Tolkien, the writer of “Lord of the Rings,” and “The Hobbit.” Although these references are to books, you
might recognize them also as movies. “Lord of the Rings” was released some time ago. The first part of “The Hobbit”
was released just recently. My understanding is that a second part is yet expected. How is this a Catholic way of looking at
the world?
First, Tolkien was himself a devout Catholic, so much so that he was willing to be on the editorial board of the Roman
Catholic Jerusalem Bible. Engrained as he was with a strong Catholic philosophy, shouldn’t we expect that his two stories
mentioned above can easily be expected to have a Catholic perspective of life as well? Let’s see.
The core of both books is that a ring was claimed by a Hobbit named Bilbo which gave one a strong sense of power. This
power could actually be experienced by the owner as, for example, becoming invisible to anyone else simply by putting the
ring on. But there is a catch! Each time one places the ring on, especially for such a purpose, one’s personality is slightly
transformed into what appears to be a power loving person, increasingly disconnected from other human beings. All that
matters is that I am powerful in an ever increasing selfish or self-seeking behavioral stance. This person becomes, for lack
of a better phrase, mentally ill. And Bilbo, as we see in “Lord of the Rings,” is evidencing such behavior. There is another
more complicated problem. The world is affected, too. A great evil acts through this ring and, without going into detail,
is affecting the world. So, this ring must be returned to where it came from, and thrown into the fire there. Another Hobbit, Frodo, ends up with this ring and is joined by a number of other folk to engage on a journey to destroy this ring. We
will see in this story that this ring will affect even him.
Now, what could be a Catholic influence here? How about Adam and Eve? They were connected to God in a world
where everything was in balance, and then they threw everything off balance by eating an apple that they had been told not
to eat. But they did so, convinced of the personal power that they would gain. Now disconnected to God, they were banished from the Garden of Eden. As Frodo was a generational descendant from Bilbo, so a descendant from Adam and
Eve would also make an appearance and restore the Order. That would be Jesus. And before and after Him, a company
of faithful witnesses would arise to do their part to help, very much like the company that joins Frodo to get rid of the
ring. Individuals who feel power hungry may severely weaken the world’s balance, and it takes a family of people very
much connected to each other and to the world who will restore it. And in addition the star of Tolkien’s book is a weak,
small Hobbit. But don’t be fooled by his size. A force of good flows through him, and he is stronger than you would
think. Think of David and Goliath here. God destroyed Goliath through David, who certainly could not have done that by
himself.
There is a saying that “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Such is the nature of sin that renders a
power-seeking person who leaves his heart behind, a heart that should share with others, with an ever increasing distorted
personality. Gollum, another owner of the ring before Bilbo, is so distorted that his very humanity is barely recognizable.
But all is not lost, whether for the characters in the Tolkien stories, or for us. Good does indeed triumph over evil. Tolkien
reminds us of that, and so does Christ, who after all reminded Tolkien first.
Peace, Fr. Walter

Marriage Preparation Program At
Our Lady of Peace Church
Parishes have the responsibility of preparing their parishioners to receive the Sacrament
of Matrimony. Depending upon the specific circumstances of the bride and/or groom
(particularly in the case of different religious or faith beliefs and if the wedding is to take
place at a non-Catholic church) special instructions, permissions, and dispensations will
be needed. Consequently, marriage preparation should begin at least 9 months prior to
your wedding.
If your plans include marrying at Our Lady of Peace and you have a wedding date in
mind, please call the Rectory, 630-323-4333 Ext. 23 and leave a message for Deacon Larry.
He will contact you and enter your date in the marriage book. One year prior to your desired date is not too soon to call. It’s important to reserve your church date and time before you schedule your reception.
