WELCOME FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
I would like to welcome everyone to the 51st Texas Locksmiths Association Annual
Convention, Security Trade Show and Expo in Plano, Texas. The convention will
be held at the SouthFork Hotel, February 19-21, 2015. I am looking forward
to seeing everyone again and meeting with all of our new members. We have
activities planned for everyone to enjoy and we will have a daily agenda posted
by the TLA office as well as in the registration booth area. For everyone that
preregisters there will be an agenda enclosed in your packets.
As in past years we are following our two day class format. We will be having four
and eight hour classes, Thursday and Friday as well as our evening seminars on
Thursday. Please make note of the class schedule to verify your class hours (4
hours or 8 hours). We have lined up some new classes this year. I hope you come
take advantage of all the education. Our business meeting is Friday evening at
7:30 PM please make every effort to be there. We have several items on our
agenda that need our attention. We must meet quorum to conduct business. Our
trade show and expo will take place Saturday morning 9:30AM-3:00PM at the
Southfork Hotel with the Banquet to follow at 7:00PM.
We will have family activities in our hospitality room during the day for our
families and friends to enjoy. I would like to see families continue to return to the
TLA Convention. Last year we had activities including scrapbooking and crafts, a
recipe swap, movie time, games, Scentsy and Mary Kay. We hope to have similar
activities open to everyone this year.
Wayne Howard at Laser Security Products has donated a 3D Pro and Zak Gilmore
with Hollon Safe has donated a RG-22 Gun Safe to help raise money for our
Association. The 3D Pro along with the Gun Safe will be raffled off. I would like
to thank all the vendors for their longtime and continued support of TLA. Please
make sure to stop by their booths and thank them for their support. Our vendors
help make all this possible.
I wish to thank all the instructors that come to teach and help make this a
successful event and all the vendors that have stepped up and supported our
organization this year and in past years.
We are looking for people to help fill our board for 2015. If you know someone
or if you yourself would like to participate on the TLA board please contact me or
one of the board members.

The DPS will perform a legislative update to all who attend at 6:00pm on Friday
before the General Membership Meeting. To those that are seated before the
doors close and remain until completed we will issue 1 CEU for attending the

You may pick your pre-registered packets up on Wednesday evening from 5:00
p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. All tickets and
receipts will be held for your arrival and check in at the TLA registration booth.
PRE-REGISTERED
Anyone registering prior to January 16, 2015 will be considered PRE-REGISTERED
and receive special rates. Registration should be mailed to the Secretary using the
enclosed form. Please register early to be assured your choice of classes and prevent
cancellation due to low student ratio.

2015 Membership
Membership packets and ID cards for 2015 can be picked up at the Membership
desk throughout the convention week. All 2015 packets that are not picked up
during the convention will be mailed out after the convention. Membership dues
can be paid at the convention to bring your membership current and active for
2015. Just as a reminder, membership dues need to be paid prior to the General
Membership Meeting in order to attend and vote, membership dues can be paid
at the door.

Exhibits are open from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
There will be many great door prizes given away during the exhibits. The annual
TLA “Casino Night” will be held Saturday night, which will benefit the Scholarship
Fund. We will have a great buffet dinner, fun, games, door prizes, awards and cash
bar. Tickets are a bargain at $30.00 per person / 2 people for $50.00.

CLASSES
All students must be registered for the convention and pay necessary fees in
order to take classes, attend exhibits, etc. All classes and ethics will be at the
Southfork Hotel. All regular classes begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.; you MUST be in
class NO LATER than 8:15 a.m.
LUNCH
Lunch is included in the cost of all 8 hours of education on Thursday and Friday.

on checks returned for any reason. All Texas licensed Locksmiths who apply for a

Class 1 / Quickbooks / Sheryl Bartos (8 Hour/CEU)
In this class the student will learn and be able to perform the fundamentals of
Quickbooks software. The student will learn how to work with lists, create and
maintain files for customers and vendors, record transactions, use bank account
registers, record and pay bills, record deposits, reconcile checking accounts,
create and customize reports.
CLASS 2 / Basic Automotive / Sean Preuss (8 Hour/CEU)
Introduction into basic automotive key generation and programming. Tips and
tricks for a quicker and more money efficient stock. Basic transponder chip
harvesting and alternative uses for specific chip sets. Automotive ignition removal
and repair tips and tricks.
Class 3 / Life Safety Codes w/ ADA / Woody Goodyear (8 Hour/CEU)
This is a must class for the Locksmith/security professional of the 21st Century.
The areas covered will include the new International Building Code, IBC 2006
Chapters 3, 4,10 & 11. The National Fire Protection Association, NFPA 80-2007,
NFPA 101-2006, Underwriters Laboratories product listings, and ADA Act of
1990. Each student will leave with a clear understanding of how the building and
fire codes work. Each student will receive a manual for a future reference guide,
the cost of which is included in the class price.
The information presented will be useful in preparing for PRP section L-07.
PRP Section L-07 will be offered after class.
ALOA Members - $20.00 & Non-Members - 25.00.
Class 4 / Introduction to CCTV / Don Hiser (4 Hour/CEU)
We will learn the basics of an analog CCTV system. We will explore the difference
between crimp on and compression BNC connectors. We will have hands
on attaching BNC cable ends to RG59 cable. We will learn basic setup and
programming of a multi-channel DVR. We will discuss different ways of cabling,
monitor setup and camera selection in a commercial environment.
CLASS 5 / Detex Hands-On Exit Device and Automatic Operator Training / Scott Peck & Russell Hansmann ( 6 Hour/CEU)
With more electrified products than the competition, this class will alloy you
the hands-on experience on installation & integration. Be prepared to install
mechanical and wire electronic devices. You will have the opportunity to wire
electronic automatic door openers. Come learn the electrified door hardware.

CLASS 6 / ATM’s, The Do’s and Don’ts / Mark Caudill ( 4 Hour/CEU)
All will receive folders and DVD of more information than can be taught in a
single class. You will learn things about ATM locks and how it is changed, so there
are need to know things. You will learn about Hard Plate, Drill Points and Drilling
methods that work, including opening an older NCR 5800 type of ATM with a
single bit. We will also cover repair techniques.

CLASS 7 / EEPROM / Stacy Hetchler (8 Hour/CEU)
Course is a full hands on transponder programming class via soldering/de
soldering and EEPROM work. Students will be provided with full soldering
stations and programming equipment including solder and hot air station, AR32
EEPROM reading equipment, Zedbull and Tango Programmers and all the
necessary tools for in class use. Our team of instructors will walk you through
step by step from locating the modules in the cars, the device on the module,
desoldering it, extracting the transponder info from the device and use of the
advanced programmers to produce a working transponder for cars and bikes. We
will show you how to produce keys for Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, VW,
Ducati, Vespa, Porsche, SAAB, etc. All of this done without pin numbers, OBD
Ports, expensive dealer programmers and subscriptions. Can you make a push
fob key for 2013 VW Passat CC? I will show you how it is possible in under 30
minutes. This will be strictly limited to 30 students and all students are required
to bring a working keyless entry remote for a car that contains an 8 leg EEPROM.
Any student who would like to bring car modules that contain key data and larger
devices IE 64 QDF and 44 LEG Flash etc, we will service those and show data to
key conversion if time permits.
CLASS 8 / Small Format Interchangeable Core / Buddy Clifford (4 Hour/CEU)
This course will encompass a brief history of IC cores, and their purpose of use.
Student(s) will learn the art of keying, servicing, finding control and masterkeying
of; Falcon, Best, Arrow, Eagle, Lloyd Mattheson, and Keymark by Medeco Cores.
This is a hands-on class during which student will learn and exercise the proper
procedure for keying cores and doing applicable paperwork. Each person should
complete this class with the knowledge and confidence necessary to service
Small Format I/C Cores.

CLASS 9 / Growing Your Retail Business / Dan Floeck (4 Hour/CEU)
You are the lock professional, make sure every customer agrees. Topics covered in this
course, include: Merchandising, Customer Impressions, Pricing, Shop Appearance,
Employee Attitude and Arguments, Silent Salesmen, Product Strategy, Inventory
control, Location, Location, Location.
Class 10 / Lishi / Chris Law (8 Hour/CEU)
Automotive hands-on training with Genuine Lishi 2-in-1 lock pick/decoder tools.
Students learn the proper use of the tools and the steps required for successful
use in the field. Standard and High security locks are covered.
CLASS 11 / Safe Lock Servicing & Troubleshooting /
Woody Woodyear (8 Hour/CEU)
This course will feature the basics of combination locks as well as a discussion on
the different makes and models. Students will also learn how to disassemble and
reassemble combination locks. They will also learn to change combinations and
determine what numbers should or should not be used. There will also be handson dialing diagnostics and troubleshooting. When the student leaves this class
they should feel confident about changing combinations, proper servicing of the
lock and be able to do some dialing diagnostics that will enable them to open
many malfunctioning safe locks without drilling. Materials students should bring
to class: Medium size common and #2 Philips screwdrivers, diagonal pliers and
pencil and paper for any notes they want to make. The information presented
will be useful in preparing for PRP Section L- 24 & L-33 and STPRP Section S-00.
CLASS 12 / Tips, Tricks & Transponder Update / Jim Hetchler (4 Hour/CEU)
Course will focus on automotive tips and tricks pertaining to the interaction of
keys and electronic systems along with changes in automotive transponders.
There will be numerous ideas and suggestions to make it easier to accomplish
key generation. Some pitfalls and how to avoid them will be discussed. As this
becomes a one world system new and different options are being introduced to
the USA from other parts of the world.

CLASS 13 / Replacing Lost Keyless Entry Remotes / Keyless Ride (4 Hour/CEU)
Established in 2001, KeylessRide is a leading designer and marketer of replacement
automotive keyless entry remotes, transponder keys and programming
technology. Landon Taylor has been a Technician with KeylessRide for two years
and specializes in automotive key and remote originating and duplicating using
tools such as Hotwire, Zed-BULL, Miracle A5, K2 Forge and many others.
CLASS 14 / Creating a Web Presence / Steve Sacco (4 Hour/CEU)
Creating a website can be a terrifying thing especially if you don’t know how
to do it. This course will explain how to create and maintain a web presence.
The presentation will examine various web authoring options and what each
has to offer. Additionally, a presentation comparing good and not so good, site
will show participants what to look for in a website. The following topics will be
discussed: What is a website and how do you use it to get more customers, How
to use SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Web authoring tools, Web hosting
options, How to have a website match the corporate identity, The components
of a site, Good website design practices.
CLASS 15 / Locksmith Marketing / Steve Sacco ( 4 Hour/CEU)
Wonder why some people are more successful at marketing than others? Wonder
what scammers do that you don’t to market their business? This course will give
participants insight in the world of locksmith marketing and how to create a
truly professional corporate identity. The following topics will be discussed: The
importance of a logo, Using a consistent theme throughout your marketing, The
use of social media to improve your market share, Free marketing tools that are
readily available, Locating inexpensive print vendors, Understanding the current
use of internet based marketing, So much more.

CLASS 16 / Ethics / John Helweg (1 Hour/CEU)
The student will be examining ethics as they pertain to the locksmith profession. This is
a fun and enlightening class. The instructor encourages class participation and follows
and interactive discussion format. This class meets the state ethics requirement for
locksmith licensing. This class if free with registration to any paid class.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS
Sheryl Bartos is the owner of SherylQBPro-Consulting which specializes in
QuickBooks setup and support. She created SherylQBPro-Consulting to help
individuals and businesses alike solve their QuickBooks issues. Sheryl began
working with QuickBooks in 2001 at a Public Accounting Firm in Bedford, TX
and started her own business in 2010. Her Intuit Certification and experience has
provided her with expertise in multiple versions of QuickBooks. In addition, her
educational background includes degrees in both Accounting and International
Business Spanish. Sheryl is married with 3 grown daughters and 4 grandchildren.
Mark Caudill, CRL, has been in the locksmith trade for 38 years working on safes,
ATM’s and vaults. He has written articles published for both ALOA and SAVTA. He is
currently working on a book about ATM’s and hopes to have it ready for convention.
Buddy Clifford is a third generation locksmith and has been working in the
industry for over 48 years, 38 of those have included instructing the Small Format
IC Core Class for many local and state associations. Buddy was factory trained
by Best Locking Systems in 1969. He and wife, Judy have owned and operated
Anchor Safe & Lock Company in Lake Jackson, Texas for 48 years. Buddy has been
a member of TLA and ALOA for over 45 years and has served on the board in
various positions for TLA. He is also a member and past board member of GHLA.
He was one of the first members of ALOA to earn the designation of CML and has
been licensed by the State of Texas for over 41 years.
Dan Floeck has managed retail businesses since 1974. In 1988 he began
managing H.L. Flake and has been there ever since. In the past, he owned a small
chain of bicycle shops with stores that averaged over 3,000 sq. ft. of space. His
business was a top 5% performer in sales volume when compared to others in the
industry. When many other shops struggled to sell 1,000 bicycles annually, one of
Dan’s stores sold 990 bicycles in a two month period. Dan also served as Store
Manager and as Senior Manager over eighteen stores of a 72 store Hi-Lo Auto
Parts chain. He eventually moved up to Chief Operating Officer, overseeing stores
that stretched from Metairie, Louisiana to Laredo, Texas. The stores averaged
9,000 sq. ft. in size with over 1,500 feet of merchandising in front of the counter.
Inventory was difficult while tracking 30,000 different items without the use of a
computer. These stores had some of the highest gross sales in the Texas / Louisiana
region, with annual sales over 70 million dollars. He left Hi-Lo Auto Parts in 1988 to
purchase H.L. Flake Company. He credits his success today to the lessons learned
behind the sales counter many years ago. Dan has also served on the board of
directors for the Security Hardware Distributors Association and ALOA.

Russell Hansmann has been in the door and hardware industry for over
27 years. He has worked for Detex Corporation during this time and currently
is Supervisor of the technical support department. He has worked directly with
locksmiths and electricians on installations, applications and troubleshooting.
Russell has an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from NEC.
He has been training for over 20 years on door hardware and electronic watch
clock systems.
Jim Hetchler has many years in the law enforcement and repossession
industry and became a locksmith in 1995. He has spent many hours with hands
on learning the automotive field. Presently he is on the NASTF Committee and
teaches throughout the USA for ALOA and many other locksmith associations and
distributors. He established the Key Pro¨ Website in 2005 which is dedicated to the
automotive industry. To date there are over 1100 members with almost 260,000
posts and over 170 training videos available. Ten years ago Jim became a partner
to the Just Cars Show and this year bought his partner out and formed an LLC.
Each year for a weekend 500+ locksmiths gather to learn the latest techniques in
the industry. Jim enjoys sharing his collection of videos, articles and data he has
gathered in the last 18 years. He has also served as past President of the Texas
Locksmith Association three terms. Promoting and teaching advanced methods of
automotive key generation is a goal he embraces.
Stacy Hetchler is a successful, advanced, automotive locksmith; providing 17
years of dedicated service to south central Texas. He brings efficient ideology
and innovation to the industry with his instruction techniques, published articles
with internationally recognized KeyPro.com and trustworthy reliable tech support
and BETA testing. When he is not traveling the world to teach or take in another
convention, he spends his limited free time with his family and friends playing
soccer or paintball. He also enjoys flying helicopters, good music, and good food.
Don Hiser, CRL, is the owner of 24 Hr. Lock & Key based in Houston, Texas. He has
been a professional locksmith and security technician for over 20 years. He covers
most of Southeast Texas. He started in CCTV work over 10 years ago, specializing in
4-16 camera analog systems. He is a member of GHLA, TLA and ALOA.

Chris Law was an arcade and gaming machine technician for a major casino at
Lake Tahoe from 1993 to 2002 and had many different lock related opportunities
on the job. He developed a custom security hasp configuration for certain
coin operated machines which eventually was used by other casino properties
nationwide. He was collecting and picking locks at a very young age and was
always interested in high security. In October 2004 he purchased a mobile
locksmith business and soon discovered the need for generating automotive
keys. In 2006 he purchased his first Lishi pick tool for Audi/VW and was very
impressed by the unique design and effectiveness of the tool. He sent a few lock
samples to Lishi Tools creator Mr. Li hoping for new tool development and it was
a huge success. A few of the Genuine Lishi Tools he helped with developments
and testing: B107, DAT17, GM37, GM37W, GM39, HY20, TOY2 and TOY43R. In
2011 he received the Genuine Lishi Training School Certificate at ALOA. He is still
actively beta testing new tools in developments for the USA market.
scott peck has been in the automatic door manufacturing business for 20
years. He is experienced in assembly, technical support, design, sales, installation
and servicing of low energy automatic swing door operators. Scott is employed by
Detex Corporation as a Sales Engineer and duties include product development,
demonstration and training.
Sean Preuss has been locksmithing for approximately for 12 years specializing
in automotive for the last 8 ears. He has been a Just Cars instructor for the last 3
years. He has extensive automotive knowledge ranging from beginner to advanced
locksmithing. A few of his areas of expertise include basic and high security key
generations, OBD transponder programming, EEPROM programing, high security,
basic lock, ignition removal and repairs.
Steve sacco, RL, has been a locksmith since 2005 and along with his loving wife
Sharon, is the owner of Local Locksmith in Benson, Arizona. Steve has an extensive
background in computer technology that began in 1975 and has been a computer
educator for over 35 years. He believes that this background is what makes
working on automotive immobilizers and EEPROMs so much fun. Additionally,
Steve has been a small business operator for over 20 years and has been a web
developer for more than 16 years. When he is not locksmithing, he enjoys pen
turning, leatherworking, his dog Plymouth and radio controlled vehicles.

Grey R. “Woody” woodyear, CRL, is an ACE Certified Instructor who works
as a locksmith, safe technician, and instructor in Austin, Texas. Woody started
his career in Washington D.C. servicing many Government Agency safes, high
security systems, and keyless mechanical locks. Now in Austin, he is involved in
all levels of locksmithing and specializes in Safe work of all types. As an instructor
for the Associated Locksmiths of America, he has taught classes in Safe Servicing,
Electronic Safe Locks, Fundamentals of Locksmithing, SFIC, Ethics, Safe Deposit
Locks, Professional Lockpicking, and Impressioning. He has also taught classes
