Stars!
The annual music awards have been getting
very glam, and the proof is in the gorgeous
gems on display. What these stars chose to
wear last year was pitch-perfect, and we can’t
wait to see the dazzlers to come

Adele
Best Diamond Duet
“When Adele performs, the camera comes in close,” says
her stylist Gaelle Paul. “You want pieces that glitter.” So a day
before the show, Paul headed to Cartier and found these
stunning earrings (she dubbed them the Donuts for their
distinctive shape). Covered in 460 diamonds and paired with
a pavé diamond band, the singer’s gems sparkled against
her black Burberry Prorsum dress throughout a rousing rendition of “Rolling in the Deep.” Afterward, Adele may have
switched into Armani Privé, but she kept the pieces on as she
picked up six Grammys, including Album of the Year for 21.

RIHANNA
Best Riff on Gold
Rihanna’s source of inspiration for
her Grammy red-carpet look was
Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Elvira
Hancock in the 1983 cult classic
Scarface. The singer’s sleek attire
included an Armani Privé gown
and lots of jewelry. She piled on
gold Neil Lane snake rings and
bracelets—a cuff and a bangle.
Super-sexy Jacquie Aiche gold
body chains—one with a pavé-set
diamond snake and the other,
a diamond cross—showed off the
gown’s plunging neckline and her
golden skin in the open-back gown.

Best Ensemble
“The night before the show,
Whitney Houston passed
away, and Jennifer was asked
to perform a tribute. We
put the jewelry together in
something like three hours,”
remembers Neil Lane.
Hudson, singing the iconic
“I Will Always Love You,”
wore a black-and-silver
Alexander McQueen gown
and three art deco bracelets,
plus diamond pendant earrings and a large diamondand-pearl ring. “It was
glamorous,” says Lane, but
also tasteful and appropriate
to the moment.

Best Ring Bearer
Hillary scott
“Once I saw the Alberta Ferretti dress
Kelly was going to wear, I knew these
pieces would work,” says Lorraine
Schwartz. Indeed, the texture of the
rough diamond slices and faceted gems
in this blackened platinum ring from her
Iridescent Diamond Silver collection
looked as though they were made to
match the metallic embroidery on the
bodice of the gown. According to the
jewelry designer, the fit of the matching
75 carat earrings was also just right. “A
large marquise-shaped earring that hits
below the jawline lifts the face in the
most flattering way.”
Best Eye-Catchers
The female voice of the country trio Lady
Antebellum, Scott was stunning in Sutra earrings that were impossible to miss when the
group won Best Country Album for Own the
Night. More than 26 carats of pink quartz slices
were at the center of the bold beauties, set
with diamonds and pink sapphires in blackened 18kt gold. “Jewelry is as important to
the overall look as the hair and makeup,” says
Scott’s stylist Lee Moore. “The stones
echoed the smokiness of her eyes, and
there was a hint of the colors in her
Monique Lhuillier dress.”
miranda lambert
Best Trio
“Miranda has an obsession with Tiffany jewelry,” explains
her stylist Tiffany Gifford. “She buys the Celebration rings
for herself and loved ones, but we had never done Tiffany
jewelry for an event until the Grammys.” Gifford chose
diamond pieces to accessorize the country singer’s
ornately beaded, flesh-toned Atelier Pavoni gown. The
foliate pattern and intricate metalwork in the 2.15 carat
marquise diamond and platinum earrings echoed the
pattern of the dress. The triple stack of diamond bangles
added extra sparkle to her wrist. “Her engagement ring and
wedding band were on the left hand, so we put the stack of
bracelets and a ring on the right,” says Gifford.

Best Mix
More than a month before last
year’s ceremony, the talented
jazz musician and 2011 Best
New Artist Grammy winner told
her stylist Cassie O’Sullivan that
she wanted to pay it forward
by wearing clothes and jewelry
from up-and-coming designers
who use fair-trade materials.
With the advance planning
time, O’Sullivan had Aimee G
make a wild silk handpainted
dress, and then she sourced
jewelry to highlight the colors
in the gown. Three handmade
red copper and resin bracelets
from the War Paint collection
of Bali-based Swedish designer
Lena Bernard were pushed up
on the singer’s forearm. Around
her wrist was L.A. designer
Julie Rofman’s Cape Cuff of
delicas beads, assembled using
Native American techniques.

katy perry
Best Diamond Drops
Perry brought her unique POV to the
red carpet with dazzling Norman
Silverman Diamonds earrings and a
beaded pale blue Elie Saab dress colorcoordinated with her electric-blue hair,
which was pinned up in an exaggerated
pompadour. “The gown and the way her
hair was styled inspired the jewelry,”
explains Perry’s stylist Johnny Wujek.
“The long earrings felt right with the
look.” Three Asscher-cut diamonds
(totaling more than 20 carats) set in
diamonds and platinum made up the
dramatic danglers.

gwyneth paltrow
Best Rocking Ring
Jessie j
When she stepped onstage to introduce Adele, Gwyneth Paltrow showed
how to do the new minimalism: in a
Stella McCartney halter dress with
cutout details and a wide golden belt.
The only jewel she wore (besides
her wedding rings) was a Delfina
Delettrez silver open-heart ring set
with black diamonds and pierced by six
arrows in silver and gold, dripping with
blood-red rubies. “That ring practially
looked like a tattoo,” says her stylist
Elizabeth Saltzman.
Best Quick Hit
The hard edge of Jessie J’s Julien Macdonald
gown and her jet black hair were in sync with
costume pendant earrings from Mawi’s
Pretty Tough collection. Red Swarovski crystals
popped against the charcoal hematite and
gunmetal jewels by the London-based designer.
The “Who You Are” singer flipped when she saw
them. “They were an instant hit,” says Mawi.
fergie
Best Hoops
“The jewelry had to be as bold—and make
as much of a statement—as Fergie’s orange
peekaboo Gaultier Paris gown,” says
Neil Lane. So when the Black Eyed Peas
singer chose a hand-hammered gold cuff
from the jewelry designer’s Byzantine
collection, he knew the look she had in
mind. “I had a big pair of hoops, but Fergie
wanted them bigger,” says the designer.
“We created a huge pair in three days
for the special night.”
