Apply Scratch Coat Install Stone to side motion to create a bond. Each additional course that is installed will begin with a cornerstone. Manufactured stone veneer is easily shaped or cut as desired. This enables you to fit stones quickly into place, insuring a natural looking wall with tight mortar joints. Cutting or shaping can be done by using either of the following tools: 4” handheld disc grinder with diamond blade, nippers or a wet saw. Note: Always wear safety glasses while cutting stone veneer. 5. Apply a nominal ⅜” to ½” thick layer of mortar over the lath with a mason’s trowel. Ensure the lath is completely covered with mortar to allow for scoring of the surface. Apply a thin layer of mortar over any areas of the wall where lath is still visible. The mortar should be applied with sufficient pressure and thickness to fully embed the lath. Once the mortar is thumb-print hard, scratch the surface horizontally with a notched trowel, scarifier or scrap piece of lath to create a scratch coat. 6. After the scratch coat dries (allow at least 24 hours) and before the stone is applied, snap 8” chalk lines across the wall for the purpose of proper horizontal alignment of stone. When installing the first course, start at the bottom corner of a wall installing one or two corner stones first. Corner pieces have a long and a short return. These returns should alternate in opposite directions on the wall’s corner staying within the chalk lines. Continue the project by installing flats off of these corner pieces. Apply mortar to the back of the stone and work it into the wall with a side 11191 Calabash Ave. • Fontana, CA 92337 Phone: (800) 847-8663 Fax: (909) 357-7362 [email protected] w w w.C ORON A DO.c om Due to photographic and printing variations, colors may not be accurate. Before installing any Coronado Stone® veneer products, make sure the surface is clean and free of any dust or debris. Dirt and dust on the wall could lessen the bond between the stone and the masonry surface. 2. Build out the wall to your desired dimension (note: installing the scratch coat and stone will add additional dimension and should be factored in while designing your fireplace). 3. Install sheathing over your wood frame. There are several different types of sheathing that can be used including: plywood, drywall and cement board. The most commonly used sheathing is plywood. Tools and Materials Required: Hammer, Mason’s Trowel, Safety Glasses, Level, Chalk Line, Whisk Broom, Wire Brush, Water Bucket, Hoe, Dust Mask, Screw Gun, Screws, Nails, Premixed Type S Mortar and Polymer Modified Mortar Possible Tools Needed: 4” Grinder with Diamond Cutting Blade, Coronado Nippers or a Wet Saw 4. The WRB should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Next, apply a layer of 2.5 or 3.4 pound expanded metal lath horizontally. The lath should overlap a minimum of one inch on the horizontal and vertical seams. Detailed instructions available at www.CORONADO.com
