After a very long and very rainy month,
Lakelands residents enjoyed a beautiful
Memorial Day weekend, which included the
opening of the pool and a movie on the lawn.
At the Pool Opening Party on Saturday,
families enjoyed a dj, dunk tank and games
on the pool deck. That evening a large crowd
gathered on the lawn for a relaxing evening,
watching ET on an inflatable screen.
The pool is now open every day until
Labor Day. We welcome back Allyson Evans
and her staff of RSV Pool Management.

May Board Meeting
The monthly LCA Board meeting was held on May 9. The board
approved the following motions:
• T he appointment of Kate Strand to the Social Committee.
• T he appointment of Rupal Turner to the Board of Directors term
due to expire at the 2016 Annual Meeting and David Stillwell to
the Board of Directors term which is due to expire at the 2017

June Board Meeting
The Board will host its monthly meeting on Monday, June 13,
at 7:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Lakelands Clubhouse.
All residents are welcome to attend. The meeting begins with
an Open Forum during which residents can address issues of
concern.
Kidical Mass Ride
Sundays are fun days for a bicycle ride. Join Bike Gaithersburg
for its monthly Kidical Mass Ride on Sunday, June 11. This ride
will have two meeting points. Meet at Kentlands Market Square
at 10:00 a.m. and ride along shared use paths and low traffic level
streets to Malcolm King Park on West Side Drive around 10:40
a.m. There will be time to play at the park while others join in.
From Malcolm King Park, ride to Bohrer Park for mini golf. For

Bulk Pickup Day
Bulk trash pickup, provided by the City of Gaithersburg, is
scheduled for Lakelands on Thursday, June 2. All items must be
placed at the front curb of your home before 7:00 a.m. Items placed
in alleys or mews will not be collected. Acceptable items include
heavy electrical appliances, furniture, mattresses, large toys and
other large household items. Tree trunks and limbs, less than
six feet long and weighing less than 40 pounds, are acceptable.
Unacceptable items include household refuse, contractor debris,
household hazardous waste, propane tanks or tanks under
pressure and motor vehicle parts, including tires. Items must be
clearly marked as “Bulk Pickup”. Materials placed in plastic bags
will not be collected. For any specific questions concerning this
service, contact the City of Gaithersburg at 301-258-6370.
Keep Trash Where Trash Belongs
Please help preserve the beauty of our community by not leaving
trash cans and recycling bins out. Bags of trash should always
be kept in closed containers, and stored out of sight. These
containers should not be placed outside for trash service pickup earlier than 7:00 p.m. on the night before a pick-up day and
should be returned to the homeowner’s property no later than
the night of a pick-up day.
Kentlands Film Society
Kentlands Film Society will be screening the British film, Locke,
on Sunday, June 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
The film provides a truly original cinematic experience which
follows one man as he fights to salvage all that is important to
him. Subscriptions for the 2016 – 2017 Kentlands Film Society
season, as well as a limited number of walk-in tickets for the June
showing, will go on sale that evening beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the
reception preceding the film in the Arts Barn foyer. Subscriptions
cost $40 each, for the series of five films; the cost for just Locke is $9.

Rock the Block – June 12
The businesses of the Kentlands Square Shopping Center are
holding a block party on Sunday, June 12, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
This large-scale community event will feature fun for all ages
including face painting, train rides, food samples, prizes, a wine
tasting, Block Party Bingo, massages, and more. It will all take
place in the parking lot of Kentlands Square Shopping Center.
Free Kids Movies and a Treat for Dad at
Paragon
During Father’s Day weekend, Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19,
treat dad to a hot dog at Paragon Theaters in the Kentlands and receive
a free small popcorn. Also, beginning June 21 Paragon Theaters is
offering free kids movies for families every Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m., through August 18. The film lineup

Digital Mailboxes Now Available at Parcel
Plus
Since opening some 20 years ago Parcel Plus has offered physical
mailboxes to serve personal and business customers. Modern
technological advances have now made digital mailboxes
managed by customers from Apps on their Apple or Android
devices possible. In February Parcel Plus registered their first
customers on iPostal1 and already has increased their total

number of mailboxes by more than 20 percent. The application
is ideal for creating a virtual office, managing and reading mail
while away, and digitally archiving correspondence. It saves

Foundry Fitness 4 Kids Coming This Month Eric Pellicci, owner of the award winning gym, Foundry

Two Left Feet Dance Studio, located at 217 Market Street West,
is proud to welcome Chelsea H. Smith to their dance team
of instructors. Ms. Chelsea recently moved to the area from
Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from the University
of Alabama with a double major in Dance and Psychology
and received her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. As a
Dancer-Choreographer-Instructor, Ms. Chelsea’s long list of
accomplishments include being an American Ballet Theater
Summer Scholarship Recipient and an instructor with the
Universal Dance Association. She was most recently a company
member with the Sanspointe Dance Company in Birmingham.
Ms. Chelsea is teaching classes on Thursdays for teen ballet and
pointe, and adult ballet and tap, and on Saturdays for children
14 months to five years old in ballet, tap, pop and creative dance.
Main Street Farmers & Artists Market
The Main Street Farmers and Artists Market, located at the Main
Street Pavilion (301 Main Street) is open on Saturdays from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Products available for purchase include locally
grown produce throughout the growing season. In addition to
produce, a variety of meats, eggs, baked goods, honey, cider,
jams and jellies, granola, fresh herbs, natural soaps, and plants
and flowers may also be available. The farmers are joined by a
variety of local artists, acoustic performers, and craftspeople
with unique handcrafted items, freshly prepared foods, potted
plants and cut flowers.

Turner and Stillwell
Appointed to LCA
Board of Directors
At their May 9th meeting, the LCA Board of Directors
appointed Rupal Turner and David Stillwell to the two
vacant positions on the board. Turner will be filling the
position vacated by Kathy McKee. This position will
expire in November of this year. Stillwell will be filling
the positon vacated by Susan Seber. His position will
expire in November of 2017.

daughter Kishori. In her new
position she hopes to have a
positive impact on everyone in the
community. Her goals are to protect
the value of homes in the Lakelands
and maintain the quality of life.
Stillwell and his wife, Erin, Rupal Turner
have lived in Lakelands for more than 15 years. They
have two children, Samantha and
Ryan. He said that as a member
of the Board of Directors he
hopes to help maintain what the
communit y has in good order
and to look at what needs to be
changed and updated, so that
the Lakelands continues to be a
community that individuals and
families want to be a part of.

a current Lakelands Facilities Access Card to enter the pool
area and there is no pool admittance from the front door of the
clubhouse. All pool patrons must enter from the side entrance.
The Snack Bar will be open daily. Hours are from 3:00 to 6:00
p.m. while school is in session, and 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. daily after
that. Please use small bills when patronizing the snack bar.
Each household is allotted 10 guest passes, which are linked
to all cards in the household. The computer system will track
the number of guests when a card is swiped. Additional guest
passes can be purchased as needed, at a cost of $2 per guest.
Adult residents may bring up to five guests at one time. However,
residents between the ages of 12 and 17 may only bring two
guests at a time. Please remember that children under 12 years of
age must be accompanied in the pool or on the deck by an adult,
over 18 years of age.

Invited to Preview
Proposed Plans for
Former CPSC Site
An ad hoc committee comprised of eleven volunteers and
city staff members has been working to develop proposals
for the public use of the former Consumer Production Safety
Commission property at 10901 Darnestown Road. The 9.5 acre
site was acquired from the federal government in 2014.
The ad hoc committee will host an on-site Open House on
Wednesday, June 8, from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. to allow the public to tour
the site and see renderings of the proposed new park. This will be
followed by a formal a presentation at 7:00 p.m., during which
there will be an opportunity to ask questions. The presentation
will take place in the warehouse building on the property.
Formed in July of 2015, the committee is charged with
proposing possible name(s) for the park, reviewing information
about existing site conditions, advising the city on ways to
engage the community in the project, identifying stakeholder
concerns, ensuring that design recommendations take into
account both crime prevention and environmentally sensitive
practices, making recommendations for the repurposing and/
or redevelopment of the property, discussing trail connectivity,
examining and incorporating the history of the site as
appropriate, and working with staff and the architect/consultant
on making recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.
A presentation to the Mayor and City Council is planned for
the summer of 2016. For more information please visit the City

Neighborhood Watch Group to
Host Child Safety Speaker
June 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Clubhouse Red Room

The Lakelands Neighborhood Watch Group (NWG) held
its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 3. The main topic of
discussion was that they will host an event on June 22 at 7:00
p.m. in the Clubhouse Red Room, where Officer Dan Lane of the
Gaithersburg Police Department will speak on topics related to
child safety in the community. With the warm weather upon us
and the upcoming summer recess, children will be outdoors
and vulnerable to safety and security issues. Officer Lane, a
trained and experienced community liaison officer, will provide
valuable information and tips on how to improve the safety and
security of our children.
The NWG is looking for local merchants to donate
refreshments such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, doughnuts, cookies
or snacks for the June 22 event. The NWG will be pleased to
publicly recognize donors at the event and in a follow-up
Lakelands Leader article.
Following up on previous discussions of how the NWG can
generate interest and participation to promote community safety,
one of the members created a flyer that provides information about
monthly group meetings. Group volunteers will ask local merchants
to display the brochure in store windows. The flyer will also be
circulated throughout the community to promote community
awareness of NWG meetings, as well as safety and security issues.

LCA to Update
Guidelines

The Lakelands Design Review Committee (DRC)
has commenced a process to review the Lakelands
Community Association Community Standards and
Guidelines (Guidelines), the DRC Terms of Reference
(TOR), and general procedures. The committee will
make recommendations for changes, if any, to the Board
of Directors. The Guidelines were last updated in April
2010. The TOR were last updated in July 2013. Both
documents can be found at www.lakelands.org. Click
on the “Documents” tab and then the Category “DRC
Documents.” Please note, you must be logged into the
website in order to access these documents.
The general schedule is:
• May – July: Notify community of review process and
solicit community input.
• August – September: DRC review of guidelines and
procedures and prepare draft changes.
• October – November: Notify community of DRC’s
recommended changes and solicit further community
input.
• December: DRC to finalize its recommendations, based
on community input and submit DRC’s recommended
changes to Board of Directors for review and
consideration.
The DRC meets the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
at the Clubhouse. If you would like to submit comments
or suggested changes for the DRC’s consideration, please
attend a meeting or email them at [email protected].

Second Annual “Kentlands Under
the Lights” Community Dinner
Planned for June 18

Last summer’s community dinner was a huge success.
With over 3,000 people attending, it is only fitting that a second
Kentlands Under the Lights community dinner is in order for
this summer’s kick-off. As part of the Kentland’s ongoing 25th
anniversary celebration, last year’s first community dinner was
developed as one more way for neighbors and friends to come
together while enjoying a bite to eat, a drink and entertainment
in the Kentlands Market Square.
In the city of Siena, Italy each year the town residents
gather under hundreds of glowing lights to share delicious
cooking, engage in lively conversation and connect together…
as neighbors and friends. This special tradition was the
inspiration for our very own community dinner. When my wife
Ailene and I saw the community celebration in Siena, Italy we
thought this is the type of event that epitomizes a community
like the Kentlands.
The planning committee is bringing this communitybonding event to the Kentlands. Mark your calendars now to
take part in an enjoyable al fresco dinner from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m.,
on Saturday, June 18. The event is open to neighbors of all ages.
Market Square and the surrounding streets (Market Street East
and Market Street West from Center Point Way to Main Street)
will be filled with tables for diners and tents of food offerings, all
covered by a canopy of lights.
Local restaurants are invited to present their best dishes
for outdoor dining. This opportunity to showcase their business
and support the community requires a $300 fee for the 10’x10’
tent at the dinner. Restaurants interested in reserving a tent for
food sales are directed to contact either John Ingrassia at (240)
832-0557 or myself at (240) 4497115. Last year’s restaurants were
overwhelmed with demand, so
come prepared.

Congratulations to the Class of 2016!
Michael Baniak
A member of the QOHS Class of 2016,
Michael played in the QO Marching
Band and in the pit for school dramas
and musicals. Additionally, highlights
of his high school years include playing
with the Powerhouse Brass Quintet at the
Governor’s Mansion, Christmas recording
sessions in the summer, providing music
for Honor Flights for veterans, and performances at Young Artist’s
competitions, County and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals, and
All County and All State Honors Bands. Michael will be attending
the Clark School of Engineering at University of Maryland College
Park, Honors College this fall.
David Benko
David, a member of the QOHS Class of
2016, is heading off to George Mason’s
Honors College and plans to study political
science, economics, and philosophy in
Mason’s School of Politics, Government,
and International Affairs. David also
hopes to minor in German so that he can
go to grad school in Germany, where is
brother Zach Gallant lives. This summer he will be working part

Aly started as a kindergartner at Rachel
Carson 13 years ago and is now graduating
from QOHS. She will be taking her talents
to the University of Arizona where she will
be studying Speech Pathology after many
years of working with children at every
level of her schooling.
Alice Cook
Alice is graduating as a valedictorian of
the QOHS Class of 2016. The daughter of
Adrienne and Brent Cook, she grew up
in the Kentlands/Lakelands, attending
RCES and LPMS. While at QOHS, some
of Alice’s best experiences and friends
came from her years in Marching Band,
Pit Orchestra and Chamber Singers. Alice
received the QO Marching Band Member of the Year Award in
2015. In addition, the Flute Section, of which she was Section
Leader, was awarded Section of the Year. She was also inducted
into the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Alice earned more than 500
community service hours, many from helping children learn to
ride horses. Alice will be attending Grinnell College in the fall,
where she was the recipient of a Founders Scholarship.

Sam Gelman
Sam is a member of the QOHS Class
of 2016. He looks forward to attending
James Madison University in the fall of
2016. He is planning to major in sports
management. Shelby Hardy
Shelby’s high school career at QOHS was spent taking
challenging honors and AP courses; pursuing her love of
photography through her AP Studio Art portfolio, as well as
being a student aide in the Advanced Photography class; and as
a four-year Varsity Pom, where she was
a captain in both her junior and senior
years, and recently led the QO Poms to a
3rd place finish at counties and brought
home the First Place Captain award.
Shelby also dances on a competitive
dance studio team, as well as teaching
dance classes and leading the team as
a captain. She still finds time to hold
a part-time job at a clothing retailer
and spend time with her friends. Shelby will be attending
University of Arizona as a business major and looks forward
to the sunshine.
Perry Howell
Perry graduated with a degree from
Northeastern
University’s
College
of Social Sciences and Humanities
in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
As part of Perry’s work coop experience,
he was an intern at the Massachusetts
State House during the Duval Patrick
administration, and was employed as a
legal assistant at a Boston law firm. Perry intends to continue
working in Boston, preparing for the LSAT exam, and trying to
avoid the Fenway Park traffic.
Eisley Kim
Eisley is a member of the QOHS
graduating class of 2016. He was a scholar
athlete playing varsity football, wrestling,
and lacrosse. Eisley was elected Captain
his senior year for all three sports. He
also participated in club lacrosse with
Green Turtle DC. Eisley will be attending
Arizona State University in the fall and
plans to study business.

Jessica Manion
Jessica is QOHS Class of 2016 valedictorian.
She was actively involved in the Best
Buddies program for all four year of high
school, serving as vice president this year.
Jessica spent her senior year as an intern
at Quince Orchard Veterinary Hospital,
where she gained hands-on experience
in the field of veterinary medicine. In the fall, Jessica will attend
University of Florida as a Gator Nation Scholarship recipient. She
will be on the pre-vet track, majoring in animal science.

year’s Maryland state bocce championship. Drew will attend
Montgomery College and has aspirations to become a baker’s
assistant through the program at Sunflower Bakery.
Cassidy Solomon
Cassidy graduated with honors from
QOHS. She was an AP Scholar and
received a Signature Program Certificate
in Advanced Academics and Social
Science. She was a member of the National
English and Spanish Honor Societies
and was an officer in the National Honor
Society and the International Thespian
Society. She also received a Certificate of Meritorious Service
for completing 600 hours of community service. In addition to
academics, Cassidy participated in the QOHS musicals all four
years, was a member of the QOverture A Capella group, and has
been dancing with Joy of Motion since 2004. She will attend the
University of Maryland, College Park in the fall.
Mac Stiles
Mac will graduate on June 5th from
Gonzaga College High School in
Washington, DC. In his four years there
he participated in many clubs, sports
and activities including Chamber Choir,
A Capello Club (co-founder), GenVest
Financial/Business Club, Weightlifting
Club (founder), Kairos Retreat Leader,
S.O.M.E and Reading Partners Volunteer and played Varsity
Rugby on Gonzaga’s National High School Championship
Team. Mac was honored to receive the Barnes Leadership
Award (’13), Chamber Choir Leadership Award (’14) and
the 2016 St. Ignatius Spirit Award. In addition, he worked at
the Lakelands Clubhouse year round and as a Concessions
Manager for the Lakelands Lionfish. Mac has committed
to play rugby at the University of South Carolina, Columbia
where he will begin his studies in the fall of 2016. Dara Sypes
Dara is graduating from QOHS, where she
was involved in the Health Professionals
Club, a QO student ambassador, a member
of Varsity Poms and a member of the Latin
National Honors Society. She worked as a
student intern at the National Institutes of
Health last summer and currently works
at the Bar Method fitness center. Dara will
attend Elon University in North Carolina
with a major in pre-medicine studies.

School News
While QOHS seniors have already graduated, there are still
several weeks left in the 2015 – 2016 school year for the remainder
of the students. The last day of school is June 20, which is an earlyrelease day. Reports cards will be mailed on June 27.
RCES
RCES chorus and instrumental music students will perform their
spring concert on June 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the
QOHS Auditorium.
A New Student Open House will be held
on Friday, June 3. This event is for students
entering grades 1-5, who will be attending
RCES for the first time in the fall. The Open
House will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the AllPurpose Room.
The PTA Executive Committee election was held at the
May meeting. Officers for the 2016/2017 school year include
President – Paula Ross; VP, Community Relations/1st VP – Jaime
Hirschfeld; VP, School Support with Co-Chair – Lyndsey Burgess
and Jen Griswold; VP, Ways and Means – Melissa Bernstein; VP,
Social Functions with Co-Chair – Meredith Fogle and Ellie Hitt;
Treasurer with Finance Committee – Guilia Mason, Allyson
Wetter and Danielle Miller-Kordella and Secretary – Sheila Fram.
The Moon/Yoo and Dart families were named this year’s top
early PTA donors. Street signs were installed in the parking lot in
their honor. The final PTA meeting of the school year will be held
on June 7 at Pinky & Pepe’s, beginning at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate
the year, recognize outgoing executive committee members,
and welcome new parents. All are welcome, including incoming
kindergarten parents.
The fifth-grade promotion picnic will be held on June 13 from 9:15
am. – 3:00 p.m. at Smokey Glen Farm. The promotion ceremony
will take place on June 15 in the QOHS auditorium, from 9:00 –
11:00 a.m. An all-school yearbook signing will take place on the
afternoon of June 15.
The final day of school will be a Spirit Day. Students are asked to
dress as though they’re going on summer vacation. The end-ofthe-year awards assembly will begin at 9:10 a.m., during which
SGA officers and safety patrols will be recognized. Additionally,
service and merit awards will be given out, and departing staff
members will be bid farewell. The assembly will end with the
traditional fifth-grade clap-out.
LPMS
LPMS students will have a review day on June 13, followed by
final exams on June 14-16. June 17 is a makeup day for final
exams.
A PTSA End-of-Year Celebration Meeting will be held on Tuesday,
June 14, at Pinky & Pepe’s. All parents are invited to recognize

the hard-working volunteers who helped make the 2015-2016
school year a success. President Saghi
Modjtabai said, “The PTSA is in dire
need of parents who are willing to
volunteer and serve on the board as
officers, otherwise the PTSA will have
to go on hold until we get the right
people voted in. Without a board, all
of the activities that we would conduct
will completely stop.”
The eighth-grade promotion and recognition ceremony will be
held at QOHS on June 16 at 8:30 a.m., followed by a cruise on the
Spirit of Washington for all eighth-grade students. On June 20,
the last day of school, the students will have orientation at their
prospective high schools.
QOHS
School is over for the Class of 2016! Commencement ceremonies
were held on June 1 for the approximately 469 seniors at D.A.R.
Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. Armando Trull, Senior
Reporter for NPR, gave the commencement address.
Meanwhile, underclassmen are still working
hard. Final exams begin with a review day
on Monday, June 13. Exams will be given on
June 14-17. Eighth-grade orientation will be
held on Monday, June 20.
Elections of officers will take place at the
Booster Club meeting on June 8 at 7:00 p.m.
The Boosters are beginning their 2016-2017 Sponsorship Drive.

Ladies’ Day of Pampering &
Shopping Was a Huge Success
The ladies of Lakelands started their Mother’s Day one day
early at the Ladies’ Day of Pampering & Shopping, which was
held on Saturday, May 7, at the Lakelands Clubhouse. The Social
Committee lined up a great group of women to provide goods
and free services to the ladies. In the Red Room, Christa Sperry
provided seated massages, Gwen Davison led yoga workshops,
and Wendy Andrews gave mini-manicures.
Meanwhile, in the Green Room, Cabi stylists Penny Durham
and Anna Heineman offered style advice and helped women find
great deals on clothing; Karen Kearney sold her unique line of
jewelry, tees and gifts; Cori Abrams offered makeup application
advice and sold her line of Younique makeup; Cassie Cooley
offered mini facials and her line of Rodan + Fields skin care
products. Additionally, Becky Green of Kentlands Nutrition
provided samples of energy and metabolism boosting tea and
healthy protein snack bars, and using her Tanita scale provided
body assessments to women, including lean body mass,
metabolic age, bone mass, and more. Kearney, a Lakelands
resident said, “It was a lovely afternoon and a pleasure to see so
many neighbors who will be wearing my jewelry!”
Resident Sandy Doveikis was among the women who
attended the event. She said, “Ladies Day at the Lakelands
Clubhouse was fun. I enjoyed getting together with friends and
neighbors for a relaxing mini-massage, having my nails painted,
and I even found a wonderful birthday gift for my daughter. Many
thanks to the Social Committee and vendors.”
Approximately 50 women attended and enjoyed mimosas,
fruit and cheese from Whole Foods, and mini bundt cakes from
Nothing Bundt Cakes. Thank you to Social Committee members
Ivy Ho, Yanni Yee, Shadi Benz, Beth McGonagle, Kate Strand,
Joni Madary and Carol Douglas for their help with this event.

LPMS Eighth Graders
Ready to Move On
By Sloane Gallagher, QOHS Class of 2016
Transitioning from middle school to high school is both
an extremely exciting and intimidating experience for many
students. Leaving friends behind, realizing that you are growing
up, and all the festivities that accompany the eighth grade
graduation, mark an important stepping stone in the lives of
both students and their parents. Many of these rising high school
freshmen can’t wait for the feeling of independence that comes
with moving on to high school.
Ashleigh Gordon, Lakelands Park Middle School (LPMS)
eighth grader, said, “One of the things that I am looking forward
to most about high school is that I will be gaining more freedom
to choose my own classes, and I will have the option to take a
variety of different courses that interest me.”
Not only is it going to be more fun to pick their own classes,
but some hope that high school activities will help pave the way for
their future career goals. “I’m looking forward to being able to pick
classes related to my future career,” Jade Skok said. “I want to take
yearbook because I love writing and I really enjoy taking pictures. I
would also love to join Best
Buddies because I hope
to be a special education
teacher or a journalist one
day,” she added.
Although they can’t
wait to move on to better
things in high school, there
are many aspects and
memories from middle
school that LPMS students

will miss. “My favorite

middle school memory was
when we went on the Outdoor Ed overnight trip. It was raining
and we got stuck inside, but I ended up meeting a lot of new
people and making a ton of friends!” Jack Rosenberg said.
Sometimes it’s also the little things, like waving to your
favorite teacher in the hallway or seeing familiar faces when
you walk into school, that students will miss the most. “I think
that I will miss the teachers the most, because over the course
of three years you become close with them and they know you
best. Going to a new school means starting over and forming new
relationships which takes time,” Jade said.
Besides leaving LPMS, some students will also be leaving
friends behind, since the student body will be broken up; some
students will attend Quince Orchard High School (QOHS) while
others will attend Northwest High School, not to mention that
some students are lucky enough to get into magnet programs
at other schools. “I will miss living so close to school and being
able to walk with my friends every morning. And I know that it’s
going to be hard to leave some of my close friends behind, but I’m
confident that we will continue to keep in touch through social
media!” Ashleigh said.
Even though there may be concerns about high school and
what lies ahead for these students, the festivities that surround
graduation are what thrills most of the eighth graders. A
promotion and recognition ceremony will be held at QOHS on the
morning of June 16, immediately followed by a cruise on the Spirit
of Washington for all eighth grade students. “I am so excited to go
on the cruise. I also love dressing up and I’m excited to be with my
friends one last time. It’s a great way to finish up the school year
and say goodbye to the end of our time at LPMS” Jade said.
As the school year comes to a close, one important piece of
advice for future sixth grade students seemed to be consistent
among these three students. “I would like to tell future sixth
graders that they should try their best to appreciate every
moment because middle school flies by and you don’t want to
miss it!” Jack said.

Gaithersburg Ranked as Most Diverse City
in America
WalletHub, an online financial resource and services website
for individuals and businesses, recently compared 313 of the
most populated cities in the U.S. and ranked them based on a
variety of diversity metrics, including social class, ethno-racial,
household and economic diversity, and more. Gaithersburg
ranked #1 for ethno racial diversity, #2 for social class diversity,
#84 for household diversity, and #216 for economic diversity.
Its aggregate score of 70.90 across these four metrics earned
Gaithersburg the #1 ranking in the country for the second time.
It was also ranked #1 in the Small City category for communities
with populations under 100,000.
Gaithersburg Wins Awards at Recreation
Conference
The City of Gaithersburg won four awards at the 2016 Maryland
Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA) Conference in April.
Gaithersburg’s Youth & Law Enforcement Summit won the
Recreation and Leisure Services Branch Award. Constitution
Gardens, a reimagined natural play space that opened in October
of 2015, received the MRPA Planning & Design with Environmental
Protection in Mind Award in the Park and Resource Conservation
Branch. Two publications promoting City of Gaithersburg events
and amenities won first-place Agency Showcase Awards, which
recognize the best marketing and promotional materials produced
by parks and recreation agencies in Maryland. Best Program Flyer
was awarded for a performance by musician Amadou Kouyate.
Kentlands Mansion won in the Best Facility category for a booklet
highlighting rental opportunities at the historic property.
Online Records Request System Launched
To provide for enhanced transparency and staff efficiency, the
city has launched JustFOIA, an online program that allows
individuals seeking public information to submit records requests
under the Maryland Public Information Act. With this program,
requestors can specify the documents they are interested in
obtaining and can then check the status of their request, from
submission through response, via the city’s website. For details
about the public information request process, click on “Public
Information Requests” under the “Government” tab at www.
gaithersburgmd.gov.
City Employee Receives Award
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition has
selected Pam Truxal, a Program Supervisor with the City of
Gaithersburg Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture, as
a recipient of its 2016 Community Leadership Award. The award
is given annually to individuals and organizations that improve
the lives of others within their community by providing or
enhancing opportunities to engage in sports, physical activities,
fitness, and nutrition-related programs. Pam was nominated

for recently organizing two recreation activities geared toward
older adults. The President’s Council presented the Community
Leadership Award to 60 recipients across the country. Pam was
one of three recipients from the state of Maryland.
Gaithersburg Student Selected in Statewide
Essay Contest
Each year the Maryland Municipal League (MML), in partnership
with the Maryland Mayors’ Association and the Chesapeake
Employers Insurance Company, hosts the “If I Were Mayor...”
essay contest for fourth-grade students throughout the state of
Maryland. This year, students were asked what new programs
or services they would create to help citizens lead a healthier
life and make “Happy Town” a safer place to live. Gaithersburg
student, Mahita Damodara, was named a District 5 semi-finalist.
She is a student at Diamond Elementary School. In her essay,
Mahita said that if she were the mayor, she would “… work with
schools to teach kids about the importance of leading a healthy
lifestyle by making the right food choices, exercising and staying
away from bad habits. The children can inform their families so
that they will change and become healthy. I would also ask for
feedback from the citizens, on what else we can do, to support
the healthy habits of Happy Town.” Mahita will read her essay at
the Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council meeting on Monday,
June 6. Her essay is also available on the city’s website.

use a marked trail that winds through the fields and wetlands
at Bohrer Park. All participants will receive a completion award
and a free one-day admission pass to the Water Park. A brief
post-event celebration will be held at the Hillside Pavilion.

Dara Sypes Dances Her Way South
to Elon University

Dara Sypes is a member of the Quince Orchard High School
(QOHS) Class of 2016 and is committed to attend Elon University
in the fall. Dara has been a part of the Lakelands community
since 1999, with her mother Carrie, father Eric, brother Ethan,
and sister Tahli. This summer Dara is excited to embark on the
monumental milestone of graduating high school and moving
315 miles south of Lakelands.
Elon is a private liberal arts university located in North
Carolina. Moving five hours away can be a bit scary, but Dara
says, “I’m most excited to meet new people and try new things in
college. I’m looking forward to living in a new state and possibly
studying abroad!” At Elon Dara plans to begin studying for
a career in the medical field. She is starting as a public health
major on a pre-medical track. Her love for the medical field is
inspired by her mother, who is a nurse and the internship she
served at the National Institutions of Health last summer. During
this internship Dara worked in a chemistry lab in drug discovery.
This summer Dara is planning on working at The Bar Method, a
barre workout studio in the
Kentlands, to save money
for college.
Dara admits that
senior year was definitely
busy. Balancing a busy
schedule of AP classes,
working, making time for
friends and participating in
extracurricular activities,
such as the QOHS Poms
Team, was definitely
challenging. Dara was a
member of the poms team
all four years at QOHS.
She recalls that her favorite high school memory is her first
time performing at a QOHS football game with her poms team.
“It’s such an amazing feeling to walk out under the lights and
hear everyone in the stands cheering for you and your team.”
Dara’s achievements throughout her poms career allowed her
to be a senior leader this year, which came with responsibilities
including “helping the younger members on the team with
technique and learning the dances, and answering any questions
they may have had.”
Dara and her peers celebrated their graduation at D.A.R.
Constitution Hall on June 1st, “It’s really sad that high school
is coming to a close, but I couldn’t be more excited to start
the next chapter of my life,” Dara says. After experiencing an
activity- and stressed-filled senior year Dara offers some insight
for upcoming seniors. “My advice for rising seniors is to make
the most of every moment. Senior year is a time to make great
memories with your friends and it’s going to be the best year
of your high school experience. Don’t stress too much about
college, just try and have fun!”

Washo Family Bids Farewell
to Lakelands

Mark, Wendy, Sophie, and Natalie Washo have called
Lakelands home for the past seven years. However, at the end
of this month, they will say goodbye and move on to a new
chapter in their lives. A graduate of the State University of New
York and a native of Rochester, New York, Mark is returning to
his roots. He has taken a new job as Chief Business Officer/
President of the Rochester Rhinos, the men’s professional
soccer team.
The couple met in Arlington, Virginia, shortly after they
both graduated from college. They were married in 1998. Mark’s
career in sports management has taken them to New York and
Chicago, although Lakelands is the place they have called home
for the longest period of time. “We moved here two weeks before
Sophie started kindergarten,” recalls Wendy. “This is home for
our girls.” Sophie is in sixth grade at Lakelands Park Middle
School (LPMS), and Natalie is in fourth grade at Rachel Carson
Elementary School (RCES).
Wendy says they fell in love with the neighborhood when
they first saw it, and have loved living here. “I love the fact
that we can walk everywhere, and that when we go out we
always run into someone we know,” she said. The Washos have
engrossed themselves in life in the Lakelands. Because of the
many amenities of Lakelands, their lives on Gatestone Street
Celebrate! Gaithersburg

The 34th Annual Celebrate! Gaithersburg Festival will
draw an entire community to Gaithersburg’s historic city
center. Features include three bands engaging in a Battle
of the Decades, a Taste of Gaithersburg with delectable
samples from thirteen local restaurants, Dogfish Head
beer, a pop-up MakerSpace, an antique car exhibit, nature
demonstrations, amusements and activities, and much,
much more.
Celebrate! Gaithersburg in Olde Towne street festival
takes place in and around the intersection of Summit and
Diamond Avenues. Festival admission and parking are
free. Free shuttle service is available to and from satellite
parking at Lakeforest Shopping Center. Additional parking
is available at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, less than a
quarter mile from the festival area.
Wendy, Mark, Sophie & Natalie Washo
have been very enjoyable. Sophie and Natalie both swim for
the Lionfish and play soccer. Over the years, they have enjoyed
summer camps at LPMS and the Arts Barn. “There is always
something to do,” said Wendy.
Mark bikes regularly with a group of men in the community
and plays football on Saturday mornings at RCES. Wendy has
worked in Downtown Kentlands for realtor Elaine Koch for the
past three years as a Listing and Marketing Coordinator and
has helped out with concessions for the Lionfish. “There is just
something about going to swim practice every day and knowing
everybody there,” said Wendy. That, she says, is perhaps what she
will miss most.
Wendy grew up in northern Virginia and graduated from
Virginia Tech. They have a lot of family in the immediate
area. Although they will be leaving this family and the many
friends they have made over the years, they are all excited
for the move to Rochester. “It’s beautiful and there are great
schools,” said Wendy. After living in a townhome for the past
seven years, she said they are looking forward to living in a
single family home.
This month, the girls are finishing up the school year, Natalie
is celebrating her tenth birthday, and they all plan to make the
most of their last month in Lakelands. Wendy said they plan to
relax with friends at the pool and also to enjoy some of the sites
and attractions available in Washington, DC.

little slower and enjoy all sorts of pleasures, including the arts!
And when it is just a leisurely bike ride away, it is that much more
appealing. This summer, Arts on the Green has many week-long
summer camps, some one-time workshops for adults, lots of
theater, and the occasional special event. In June, that special
event is Happy Feet Family Dance at Kentlands Mansion.

Summer Camps
Week-long summer arts camps are filling up, but there are still
some opportunities to get in on making great memories and
spending time with friends—all so close to home. Full weeks of

visual arts camp you may not have thought of: photography. And
not just any photography, but sports photography! Instructor Phil
Fabrizio brings a wealth of experience and skill to what can be a
fulfilling hobby, placing the photographer right in the middle of

FOCUS ON FITNESS
A Spring Workout You Can do Outside

I always look forward to spring, and the opportunity to get
in some great exercise outdoors. It’s a good time for me to share a
very fun workout you can do with only a bench, a set of dumbbells
and a quarter-mile area where you can walk or run. As usual, my
go-to place for a terrific outdoor workout is the Lakelands Park
gazebo and surrounding paths. The benches on the picnic tables
work well for the bench exercises. You may also want to have a
mat handy.
Start with a quarter-mile walk or easy jog and then perform
several dynamic stretches such as walking knee hugs, butt kicks,
soldier walks, and side steps. Make sure to warm up the upper
body as well, with some shoulder shrugs, shoulder rolls, arm
circles, torso twists, and side bends.
The workout is divided into circuits, with four exercises
and then a quarter mile run. Each circuit is comprised of two
dumbbell exercises and two bodyweight bench exercises.
You can do the whole workout one time, go through the whole
thing once and repeat, or repeat each circuit before moving
on. Beginners should do 10-12 reps of each exercise. For a more
advanced workout go for 20 reps of each. You have plenty of
options to make it work for you.

1. Front Lunge to straight arm torso twist with one dumbbell – As
you lunge forward with the left leg, twist the dumbbell to the
left side. Alternate sides.

3. Bench Push Ups – Either hands on bench (beginner) or feet on
bench (advanced)
4. Bench Lunges – Stand with back to bench, place left foot behind
you on bench, lower and straighten right leg. Switch sides.

1. Side Bend to Bicep Curl – Hold both dumbbells at sides, bend to
right side. After you straighten complete a curl with right arm.
Alternate sides.
2. Stagger Step One Arm Row – Take a big step forward with right
leg and lean chest toward the leg. Hold a dumbbell in left hand
and row. Switch sides.
3. D ips – Sit on bench, place hands on bench, shift your
bodyweight slightly forward, bend and straighten the arms.
4. Bench Bird Dog- Place hands on bench, walk feet backwards,
alternate lifting right arm and left leg, switch to left arm and
right leg.

run a mile and a half along with an awesome total body strength
workout. Hope to see you out there crushing a workout and
breathing in that fresh spring air.
