According to Ken Miller, Chief Operating Officer for Beatty, they have chosen to withdraw the application in order to further explore community concerns and analyze how they might be addressed. Miller said, “Our intention in filing the application was purely to enrich the mix of uses in the center and allow for complementary uses that we believe would be an important first step in revitalizing the center. We now understand the depth of the community’s interest in our plans for the property, however, and will pursue any future amendments only after conducting appropriate outreach with the many stakeholders within and around the community.” Miller added that he looks forward to continuing to foster relationships with the community and working together on future plans for Kentlands Market Square. As always, the event will be held on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, September 5, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The USATF-certified 5K course begins and ends in Kentlands Downtown, runs through both Kentlands and Lakelands neighborhoods, and features live entertainment and two water stops along the way. The race will be timed using a chip timing system which allows quick and accurate scoring. The 5K Merchant Expo Festival and Awards Ceremony will be held in Market Square Plaza, immediately following the race. Two kids fun runs include the Toddler Trot, which is a quarter mile run (recommended for children under five) and the Kids Dash, which is approximately a half mile run (recommended for ages 6 to 14.) Both races run along Main Street and finish under the official race finish line. The Fun Runs are untimed and will start in waves to allow for a smooth start for all children. The next best thing to participating in the Kentlands 5K Race is volunteering and being a part of this great community event. Traditionally, more than 100 volunteers help to make the event a success. There are a variety of opportunities, from packet pick-up assistants to race day Course Marshals (a critical job that ensures the safety and enjoyment for the runners and everyone involved in the day). Students earn SSL hours, and all volunteers get a free t-shirt, free breakfast on race day, and an invitation to the annual 5K Volunteer Thank You Party. A complete list of volunteer opportunities and registration is available online. As a non-profit and philanthropic organization, the Kentlands Community Foundation (KCF) hosts the race to not only raise funds to sustain its programming, but to share a substantial amount of the proceeds with other local charities. Last year the Foundation donated $10,500 of race proceeds to local charities, and to date has donated over $100,000. This year’s beneficiaries include the City of Gaithersburg’s Dolores C. Swoyer Camp Scholarship Fund, which provides fees for underprivileged youths to attend summer camp; The Dwelling Place, which provides housing opportunities and support for families experiencing homelessness; MCPAW, a local animal shelter; and the Maryland Senior Olympics. She and I have been together for most of high school and we really care about each other, but we have differing opinions on whether or not to stay together after I leave. I don’t think long distance will work for us, but I am not sure how to tell her this without breaking her heart. What should I do? A: Take some time to reflect on how you are feeling and what the best option is for both of you in the long run. One thing in life that will always hold true is that you will get your heart broken, and that you will break someone else’s heart. It is not realistic to think that you can avoid this part of life, but understandably, it is hard to come to terms with it. Part of dating is to get to know what you want in a partner, so it is important to date different people and see what works for you. It may benefit you to go with your gut feeling in this situation. It seems like you are confident that you are not comfortable with being in a long distance relationship. Let your girlfriend know that you feel this way; explain to her that you care about her and don’t want to do anything that would hurt her while you are away. You can tell her that you would like to do the mature thing, let each other experience life, and if you get back together in the future then maybe it is meant to be. By going with your gut feeling now, instead of avoiding breaking her heart because it puts you in an uncomfortable position, you are taking care of her and yourself. Better to be up front and honest than to end up hurting each other more in the long run. Have a question you’d like considered for an upcoming issue? I especially love getting in a few awesome workouts while on vacation. The combination of the water, breeze, ocean scents, and sand makes for a fabulous atmosphere. Of course, the sand also creates a challenge that cannot be replicated anywhere else. This is a beach workout I will definitely be doing while away. I hope you will want to try it too. It is total body conditioning, so you can efficiently get in both cardio and bodyweight strength training. Always remember to leave time for a dynamic warm up and a complete cool down. Your muscles will thank you. • Start with a ½ to 1 mile walk or run on firm sand. If you can do this barefoot, it will work all kinds of muscles in your feet, calves, legs, hips, and glutes, and you will really feel it. • 2 rounds: 20 squats, 20 push ups, 20 sand dips (sit in the sand with your legs in front and feet flat on sand you put your hands behind your body, lift your hips up high off the sand, and then bend and straighten the arms). • Shuttle sprints – run or step with high knees 20 steps, back to starting point. Repeat 9 more times. • 2 rounds: 100 mountain climbers, 50 bodyweight Russian twists • Box sprints – mark off a large box in the sand. Alternate run, side shuffle, backwards run, side shuffle. Go 5 times clockwise around the box, then reverse direction. • 2 rounds: crab walks toward the water, when your fingers touch the water, flip over and bear crawl back to starting point. • Bounding hops and leaps across the sand – first complete 5 bounding jumps with both feet together, then alternating legs as you leap for 10 steps. Repeat 5 times. • 2 rounds: around the world plank – start in elbow plank hold , rotate to left side plank hold, rotate to both elbows on ground behind you (reverse plank), rotate to right side plank, and return to elbow plank. 30 seconds each hold. • Inchworms to a downward dog push up – from a standing position, reach hands toward sand, walk out to a downward dog, then perform 5 push ups (much more work for the shoulders). Reverse the direction to a standing position, repeat 4 times. • Lateral side squats for 20 steps across the sand, stay low. Reverse the direction. Repeat 5 times. • 2 rounds: glute kickbacks and fire hydrants – get on hands and knees and alternate lifting legs 2 directions while bent at the knee at a 90 degree angle. First lift leg so foot goes straight toward sky, then bend leg from hip out to the side. Perform 20 reps each leg. • Lying windshield wipers and leg raises – finish off the abs with this great pair of exercises. Lie flat on back with arms out to sides for the windshield wipers. Lift both legs toward sky and keep straight if possible. With control take them to the left side, lift to center, and then to right. Perform 10 and move to leg raises. Do not let your heels touch the ground. • Finish with another ½ to 1 mile walk or run to complete the workout Stretch your entire body and do some yoga while laying on your towel for the rest of the day! Raft Night, held on the competition deck with music, food and lots of swimming, was a team favorite. The scavenger hunt for middle and high school swimmers was a fun night of friendly competition among swimmers divided into teams. The team also held a late night swim for middle and high school swimmers. Each pep rally had a theme. One particular favorite was the wedding-themed rally, to celebrate Head Coach Brooke Hoffman’s engagement. The Lionfish family was sad to say goodbye to both Coach Brooke and Coach Michaela, as this was their last year coaching the Lionfish. The pair has led the Lionfish for seven years and will be greatly missed. Both are beginning new chapters in their lives, and while they will not be coaching the Lionfish anymore, they’ll surely be back to cheer the team on from the stands! While the Lionfish Committee will be hard at work finding a new coach for next season, they are also planning some really fun social activities with an emphasis on new and fun things for our high school swimmers.
