Teacher Suggestions
This resource can be used in a variety of ways:
1. The student booklet focuses on one chapter of the novel at a time. Each of these sections
contains the following activities:
a) Before you read the chapters (reasoning and critical thinking skills)
b) Vocabulary building (dictionary and thesaurus skills)
c) Questions on the chapter (reading comprehension skills)
d) Language activities (grammar, punctuation, word structure, and extension activities)
2. Students may read the novel at their own speed and then select, or be assigned, a variety of
questions and activities.
3. Bulletin Board and Interest Center Ideas: Themes might include baseball, amusement/theme
parks, or small breeds of dogs.
4. Pre-Reading Activities. Joey Pigza Loses Control may also be used in conjunction with themes
of children with special needs; self-esteem; the importance/influence of parents; friendship;
facing adversity; developing personal responsibility.
5. Independent Reading Approach: Students who are able to work independently may attempt
to complete the assignments in a self-directed manner. Initially these students should participate
in the pre-reading activities with the rest of the class. Students should familiarize themselves
with the reproducible student booklet. Completed worksheets should be submitted so that the
teacher can note how quickly and accurately the students are working. Students may be brought
together periodically to discuss issues in specific sections of the novel.
6. Fine Art Activities: Students may integrate such topics as the art of tattoos, sports
(i.e., baseball), planning and designing a theme park, collages, a Storyboard, and a book cover.
7. Encourage the students to keep a reading log in which they record their readings each day and
their thoughts about the passage.
8. Students should keep all their work together in one place. A portfolio cover is provided for this
reason.
9. Students should not be expected to complete all activities. Teachers should allow choice and in
some cases match the activity to the student’s ability.
10. Students should keep track (in their portfolio) of the activities they complete.

Synopsis
Joey Pigza’s life is turned upside down when his mother allows him to spend a few weeks in a
nearby city with his estranged father and grandmother. Joey has learned to depend on a medicated
patch to control his hyperactive/compulsive behavior, and dreads being without it for long periods.
Joey has an idealized image of his father, and resents his mother’s smothering ways, however
when he moves in with his dad, Joey quickly discovers the man is actually very much like him in many
respects. Carter Pigza is impulsive and has great difficulty controlling his actions and tongue. Joey also
discovers that his dad has a rather serious drinking problem.
Carter Pigza signs Joey up as a player on the baseball team he coaches, and they are both surprised
to discover that Joey is an excellent pitcher. Joey’s visit, however, becomes quickly unraveled when his
dad insists that his son stops wearing the medicated patch which helps to control his erratic behavior,
feeling that it is simply a crutch. Without this daily medication, Joey’s behavior and unhappiness quickly
spirals out of control.
The climax of the novel occurs during the championship baseball game, when Joey, unable to
control his frustration, has a complete meltdown on the mound. His mother is sent for and whisks Joey
home.
The visit has revealed to Joey a much more realistic picture of his father – both his good points and
bad, and also has helped him to realize how his mother has only had his best interests in mind in all of
the decisions she makes on his behalf.

An idiom is a literary device that says one thing, but means another (i.e., “you hit the nail on the
head”). An example from Chapter 2 is “she was steaming mad.” Think of another example of an
idiom and record it below.
Foreshadowing is a literary device in which an author drops subtle hints about what will happen later
in the story.
In this chapter, Joey spends a good deal of time practicing his pitching skills. Another clue that this
might become an important part of the plot is the cover picture showing a number of baseballs. If this
is indeed an example of foreshadowing, how do you think baseball and Joey’s pitching skills might
become a part of the plot in future chapters?

Questions:
Shortly after arriving, Joey’s mother disappeared down the road. Joey could tell by his dad’s behavior that
he was wired. His dad shook Joey’s hand and said to call him Carter. Grandma misunderstood what Joey said and
thought he was being rude. Joey’s dad decided they would visit Storybook Land Fun Park. This was the place where
his dad’s whole life had been turned around. Joey figured that this place was way too young for him.
Joey’s dad asked Joey if he brought a glove because he was coaching a baseball team. Once they arrived
at the park, Grandma decided to work on her short game at miniature golf. She needed oxygen because of her
emphysema. It was at the first exhibit of Humpty Dumpty that Joey’s dad explained how his life had been changed
on that very spot. He felt the experience had given him the willpower to change. It also made him think like never
before. His dad suggested they then go and get their pictures taken. Joey felt that his dad talked too much.
Their time in the park came to an abrupt end when Joey remembered where he had put Pablo. His dad told him
not to worry that he was probably waiting for Joey on the front porch. When Joey told his dad that he wanted to play
baseball, his dad told him he was a chip off the old block.
