2015 ANNUAL REPORT
FOUNDATION
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear friends,
As I serve my second year as Board President, I am
extremely proud to be associated with such spirited,
interesting, and engaged Board members, along
with a diligent Foundation staff! As many of you are
aware, these are exciting times for SPSCC! Here are
just a few of the many current highlights I’d like
to share:
- The SPSCC Lacey Campus opened in October 2015 and is already exceeding expectations for
enrollment. Corporate and Continuing Education
has already provided thousands of hours of non-credit courses in professional development, computer training, and
personal interest.
- SPSCC collaborated with the Thurston County Economic Development
Council to open The Center for Business & Innovation.
- The Clipper Nation is expanding! The women’s volleyball inaugural season
begins Fall 2016.
- The South Puget Sound Community College Music Program now offers
community members and students the opportunity to perform with an
orchestra, a concert band, or a choir. The Fine Arts are flourishing!
- Two South Puget Sound Community College faculty members have been
named by the National Academy of Sciences as National Academic Education
Fellows in the Life Sciences for the 2015-16 academic year.
SPSCC is a long-standing community treasure positioned for continued success.
I encourage you to visit either campus and witness the exciting learning and life
transformations taking place. I am so grateful for your support and commitment
to helping these students excel!
With gratitude,

Total Endowment as of December 31, 2015: $6,084,461
Scholarships: The Foundation was proud to offer 26 new scholarships this
year, for a total of more than 200 scholarship opportunities. These funds,
in addition to tuition waivers and emergency grants, provided increased
access to workforce training, transfer courses, and certificate programs for
over 350 students. This is an investment in better lives for individuals and
families, a productive work force and an educated citizenry.
Staff receiving awards at the 2015 Staff Appreciation Day Event
Faculty development and training: The SPSCC Foundation offers more
than $50,000 annually to staff and faculty in recognition of excellence and
innovation. The Exceptional Faculty Award supports grants to faculty
members for activities to enhance their professional development and help
keep faculty members at the cutting edge of their teaching fields. The
Trustees' Classified Staff Professional Development Award supports
conference registration, specialized training, departmental projects and
even tuition towards an advanced degree. The Employee Excellence Award
is given to faculty and staff who are nominated by their peers and can be
used for professional development.
Community Impact from the Clipper Scramble Golf Tournament and
The Experience: These much-loved fundraising events raise nearly
$300,000 annually for student success from our local businesses and
individuals who realize the value of education, and give generously to
help remove financial barriers to access.
Campus Giving Campaign: Staff and faculty believe in SPSCC! Through the
annual payroll deduction campaign, the Foundation receives almost $32,000
in contributions to various programs and scholarship funds.

to increasing student achievement by constructing clear degree
and certificate pathways supported by measurable outcomes.
Inspire Teaching and Learning Excellence: Our faculty are
inspired to continually grow as teachers and to lead instructional
change that increases student engagement, achievement,
and completion. Our students acquire the educational and
professional skills they need to thrive in the world beyond the
classroom.
Advance Equity and Embrace Diversity: We embrace the
diversity of our changing community and strive to reflect that
diversity in our staff, faculty and student body. We cultivate an
inclusive environment on campus while ensuring respect for all.
Champion Innovation: We promote a culture of creativity
among staff and faculty by encouraging innovation leading to
student success. Teamwork and collaboration across disciplines
and work areas are essential aspects of the innovation we seek.

employment and earnings, and access and success for
minority and low-income students.

STUDENT SUCCESS
Student Scholarships: The College Foundation supports hundreds of
SPSCC students by providing scholarships to eligible students. Over
$250,000 is awarded each year to over 200 recipients — awards
range from $500 up to $4,000.
Emergency Funds: The Foundation awarded nearly $45,000 in
emergency grants to help students in need, through several endowed and
emergency funds. This ability to be responsive to student needs provides
stability and enables students to stay in school and complete their programs.
Skills & Tools: Programs such as Rosie the Riveter Tool Fund, the Betti
Tool Fund, and the WorkFirst program funded nearly $30,000 to help
students purchase books and classroom supplies, uniforms, and tools.
Lara Semidei
Labor Relations Assistant,
Office of Financial Management
Recipient: Mabel Berg/Vera Westover,
Helen C. Shank, and the Thurston
County Bar Association Scholarships
Lara was a stay at home mom,
occasionally working retail and administrative jobs. After a divorce, her family
needed a change and they moved to
Washington State. Lara said “I knew I
had to go back to school and improve
the standard of living for my family. I was
looking to increase my skill set in order
to provide for our needs without remaining dependent on outside resources.”
Lara enrolled at SPSCC and started by
taking one online class; she was awarded her first scholarship in the next
quarter. In addition to her studies, Lara gained additional skills while working
on campus in the federal work study program. Together these led her to the
career she has today with Washington State Human Resources as a Labor
Relations Assistant.
“The support of the Foundation donors was an invaluable piece of my
success. It allowed me financially to be a parent to my four children while
taking a full load of classes in order to complete my educational goals
successfully and in a timely manner. The support and generosity of the
donors afforded me academic and professional success for the first time
in my life, and I plan on continuing to pay that support forward.”
ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS
Thu Le
SPSCC Class of 2016
Nursing Program
Recipient: Gisela McRavin Ray of
Hope Scholarship; H. "Jerry"
and Esther C. Maury Scholarship
Thu is originally from Vietnam. In
2010, she arrived with her family in
Washington State. She struggled at
first; the biggest obstacle was the
language barrier. She studied the
culture and tried her best to adapt to
the new environment. Thu attended
Black Hills High School and
graduated in 2013 with a 3.2 GPA.
After graduating high school, Thu
focused her educational goals on
becoming a registered nurse. She
opted to attend SPSCC because
of the nursing program’s excellent
reputation. She recently completed
her prerequisite courses and plans
to transfer to PLU to obtain her BS
in nursing.
Thu stated, “There is a need for
quality healthcare in third world
countries; this is why nursing has
become my passion. I plan to travel
abroad to use the skills I obtain from
my continuing education to help
other people around the world.”
She added, “I would like to thank the
SPSCC Foundation and scholarship
donors for their support."

Scholarship recipients and donors come together at the Annual Scholarship Reception, November 2015.
Avet M. Waldrop
Current SPSCC Student | Nursing Program
Recipient of: Olympia Country and Golf Club Scholarship
Avet has returned to college at 38 years old, a widow with three children, to
establish a better future for her family. She is currently in her third quarter at
SPSCC, obtaining her pre-requisites for the Nursing program. Avet first thought that
because of her age she was not eligible for assistance; she later learned that the
Foundation's scholarship program is available to all students.
Avet would tell a potential donor that "the Foundation's financial support helped
me to be able to focus on achieving a good balance between time with my
children and school.”
Bryan Barnett
SPSCC Class of 2016 | Associate of Arts
Recipient of: Diversity & Equity Center Scholarship; The Thurston Group
Bryan started at SPSCC as a Running Start student in 2014, lacking guidance
and support in high school. Starting college was a pivotal moment for Bryan. He
remembers being told, "You are a college student now… go get your student ID
card.” Landing at SPSCC broadened Bryan’s horizons and helped him become
confident around adults. Newfound friends encouraged Bryan to get involved
and he quickly realized he had a passion for the Diversity and Equity Center. He
helped start the Black Student Union and has been involved with many project
collaborations and clubs on campus.
Though he was unsure of what his experience at SPSCC would hold, Bryan has
just completed his Associate's Degree, was selected as the student speaker for
the 2016 Commencement ceremony, and is transferring to UW Tacoma in the fall to
study medicine. When it comes to inspiring others, Bryan was quick to say, "Believe
in yourself. You cannot look for affirmation in anyone else. No goal is too big—just
go for it".
