SECOND QUARTER
2016
Summer Fun!
If you were worried about being bored
this summer, worry no longer. I have filled
your calendar with fun activities and trips.
There are several daytrips planned to
Chanhassen (August 3 for “Beauty and the
Beast”), Old Log Theater (July 6 for “Million Dollar Quartet”), Plymouth Playhouse
(September 22 for “Church Basement
Ladies – Rise Up O Men”) and now the
Ordway Theater to see some wonderful
performances. The new show I’ve added at
the Ordway is “Paint Your Wagon” on Saturday, August 20. St. Paul audiences are
only the second group to see this new preBroadway production. Check out the details on page 16.
There are monthly casino trips planned
also to Diamond Jo (May 24), Treasure Island (June 9), Deadwood, SD ( August 2831) and Jackpot Junction (September 28-29).
Details for all of these are listed on page 18.
The Deadwood trip includes a touring day
where we will ride the 1880s train and visit
two wineries. I have a detailed itinerary
available. Sorry, we can only pick up in
Fairmont for that trip.
All of our planned extended trips are
sold and going this year – Pacific Northwest in June, Mediterranean Cruise in
October/November and New York in December. The Pacific Northwest trip is now
full but you can get on our waiting list.
The Mediterranean cruise still has room
and has some exciting changes to the itinerary. We will now be going to Dubrovnik,
Croatia and Kotor, Montenegro. I was able
to get 8 more spots for our New York trip
and cleared out my waiting list. There are
now 3 spots left available at this time.
I have also made an agreement with
Southwest Tours to advertise some of their
trips since they are by coach only (no flying). That way I can offer you more travel
opportunities and don’t have to get big
numbers of people to be able to do them.
These trips are to Colorado to ride several
trains in August and to Hostfest in Minot,
ND in September/October. You can get
some good savings by signing up through
TOTHC. I would be happy to schedule a
Travel Show in Owatonna if there is interest in either of these trips. Please call me to
discuss this.
Our most exciting news is the three big
trips we have planned for next year already. We’ll cruise through the Panama
Canal on the Norwegian Jewel from Los
Angeles to Miami from February 5-19,
2017. Then we’ll cruise again, this time
aboard the Celebrity Milennium in Alaska
from June 26 to July 7, 2017. This includes
a land tour and the Denali Train. We’re
also working on a trip to Ireland in September but details are not all worked out yet.
We can set up Travel Shows for any of
these trips if there is interest. Please
contact me to make arrangements.
I sure hope you’ll join us for some for
some of these great adventures and fun
activities. I look forward to seeing you all.
Come along with TOTHC—

WEALTH PLANNING
How Fast the Markets Recover
The stock market is amazingly resilient.
The sky is not falling, despite what the pessimists might have you believe. You may be
surprised at how fast the stock market can
change for the better. Looking back, the
market has recovered remarkably and
quickly from some notable downturns.
2001-2002 After the four-day closure of
the stock market following 9/11, the Dow
fell 685 points (the biggest single-day drop
ever) to 8920 on September 17. It kept
falling, losing 14.26% in a week to close at
8,235 on September 21. But what happened
next? A huge gain. The Dow closed 2001 at
10,021 – a 21% rebound in less than three
months.
There were more challenges ahead. On
October 9, 2002, the Dow had fallen to
7,286. But on Halloween, the Dow sat at
8,397 – a 10.6% gain in 22 days.
As for the people who panicked and
bailed out of the stock market, they ended
up kicking themselves: in 2003, the DJIA
gained 25.3%, the S&P 500 26.4%, and the
NASDAQ 50%.
1987 October 19 was Black Monday: in a
contagion of selling exacerbated by
unchecked computer technology, the Dow
lost 22.6% in one day, falling to 1,738, a 508point loss. (That would be akin to a 2,300point one-day drop today.) The S&P 500 lost
20.4%. By comparison, the initial “Black
Monday”, the stock market crash of 1929,
represented a 12.8% market loss.
Then the recovery kicked in. During the
next two trading days, the Dow gained
nearly 300 points – and it closed 1987 at
1,939, gaining back all of the loss and ending up 2% for the year. By January 1990, the
DJIA was at 2,800.7
If you were fortunate enough to invest
$1,000 in the S&P 500 index at the close of
Black Monday and reinvested your dividends, you would have wound up with
about $10,800 20 years later. If you had in-
vested in the Dow stocks a week before
Black Monday, you would have lost 30% on
your investment in the crash but if you held
on, your investment would have gained
462% over the next 20 years.
1974 With investors fretting over rising
inflation and the energy crisis, the Dow
loses 30% of its value during the first three
quarters of the year. Suddenly, the Dow
gains 16% in October. In early December
1974, the Dow is at 577; in July 1976, it hits
1,011.
I hope these examples give you some encouragement and confidence when it comes
to the market right now. The Dow, S&P and
NASDAQ have been through some rough
periods, but the important thing is to look
at how they have climbed across the
decades.
On August 12, 1982, the Dow was at 777.
On January 14, 2000, it was at 11,722.98.
That’s a 1,500% gain in 17½ years. This is
why people stay in the market through the
downturns. This is what the market is capable of achieving. There are periodic descents, but history is definitely on an
investor’s side.
Being older, I know time is an important
issue so your investment strategy should
only have 10 to 20 percent of your assets
dealing with market volatility. If you have
any questions, be sure to talk to your financial advisor as soon as possible.

INSURANCE
Backup of sewer and drains...
Will your homeowners insurance cover this?
Spring and early summer tend to be our wettest seasons making our homes most susceptible to the backup of sewer or drain lines. While these events don't occur often, when
they do, the problem can be a small disaster. Did you know a standard homeowner's insurance policy excludes coverage for such an event?
It's true. The backup of sewer and drains as well as the failure of a sump pump is excluded. The damage you sustain from either of these problems will not be covered and
you'll be responsible to pay for the loss and the clean up. If you have a finished basement,
or use your basement area for storage, you shouldn't go without this coverage endorsement.
Heavy rains can trigger a backup. A storm sewer or sanitary sewer backs up into your
home and usually comes in through a sump well, washtubs in the basement, or toilets in
the basement. However, the damage can happen anywhere in the house. Sump pump failures normally occur from power outages or motor failures. Sump pumps run on electricity and during a bad storm many times the power goes out. That’s when you need the
sump pump the most, to pump the heavy water from the rain out of the basement.
The damage can be quite costly. Normally damage occurs in the basement, which
houses the mechanical systems of the house such as: washer and dryer, furnace, water
heater and the numerous items people store there. Water or sewage usually destroys anything it comes in contact with. For the thousands of dollars in damage, it would be well
worth purchasing the additional coverage with your homeowner's policy to cover such an
event.
Be sure to ask your agent about this coverage to make sure you already have it on your
policy or to purchase it. This coverage can often be purchased as an endorsement on its
own, or with an endorsement that will expand/increase other coverage on the policy. The
additional cost usually runs between $25 and $80 annually. Well worth the peace of mind.
The key is to ask your agent what your best option is.

enjoyed a cruise up the
Mississippi from New Orleans to
Memphis from February 28 to

Also, we enjoyed great food,
relaxing travels and wonderful
service aboard the American
Queen, an authentic paddlewheel steamboat.
It was very special and I hope to take the group back
again soon along a different part of the Mississippi.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE
To Top of the Hill Club Members
Please remember to ask for your discount BEFORE making your purchase.
The number one reason that merchants have dropped out of this program
is that people mention their discount after the transaction is finished. Then
the clerk or salesperson has to rerun the transaction. This slows up their
service and causes them extra work. The only thing that these merchants
get from this program is this small amount of advertising in our Newsletter and the hope that you will patronize their business because of it.
Please DO NOT abuse this PRIVILEGE or we may all lose it!
If your business is interested in offering a discount to our Top of the Hill
members or you know of a business you’d like to see here, please contact
Ellen at 507-235-7577.

offers the chance to watch the calving of Hubbard glacier and
visits to Alaska's quaint ports beginning with Juneau, the only
state capital accessible only by sea or air. Next is Skagway, the
gateway to the Klondike where the cries of “gold in the Yukon”
still echo around every street corner of this historic town. Icy
Strait Point offers a glimpse into Alaska’s Native Tlingit culture,
as well as the charm of an Alaskan fishing village surrounded by
unspoiled wilderness. Finally, in Ketchikan there is something
for everyone from history buffs to outdoor enthusiast to die-hard
shoppers. On the last full day aboard the ship, a scenic cruise
through the dramatically beautiful Inside Passage is the perfect
way to wrap up this exciting Alaskan adventure.
There is something for everyone on this wonderful trip.
Don’t miss it!!

MEET OUR STAFF
Tabitha Pugh
Personal Banker – Mankato
Hello Everyone! As the daughter of
Ben(Karen) Hoppe of Fairmont and
Sheila(Darcy) Drevlow of Truman, many of
you may know my folks! Graduating from
Truman in 2000, I moved to the big city of
Mankato to attend college. While attending school, I entered the retail environment
at Herbergers and then went on to help
open Old Navy in Mankato. Climbing the
ladder of retail, by the time I was finished
with my undergrad, I was a manager at Old Navy and really enjoying it.
Everything from hiring, training, operational audits and just enjoying interacting with customers on a daily basis made the last 14 years fly by! I finished my undergrad at Minnesota State University, Mankato and continued
my journey with Old Navy until now. I was at a point that many individuals
in retail get, where I had put in many nights, weekends, and holidays but
still wanted to help others! I would describe myself as a smiley, fun person
who is pretty reserved at first but who loves to laugh and enjoy the simple
things in life. My college years introduced to me some amazing people including my husband, Dave Pugh, who always keeps life interesting! Having
no children, I recently became a “dog mom” to a rescued American Bully
who is the sweetest thing around. Hobbies of mine include coloring, getting
together with my gal pals, and as members of the River Valley Off-Roaders
(RVOR), my husband and I enjoy spending time in our Jeeps. Whether just
tooling about for a leisure drive or getting muddy in the woods, they are a
great way to relax! Now that you know a bit about me, next time you are in
Mankato, stop by the Mankato Profinium so I can get to know you! I look
forward to rekindling old relationships and igniting new ones and would
love to just say “Hello”!
