MESSAGE from our PoteNTATE
Progress
Without dedication there
can be no progress
We are off on a new adventure. Coming up this quarter
we have the following events:
January
18 Business meeting-events, and budgets for this year
23 East West Shrine Game
27 Appointees dinner at Silver Gardens
February
6 Sportsman Raffle hosted by Mike Zelmanski
10 Unit Veterans Party at Silver Gardens
March
26 World Famous Meat Raffle-hosted by Len Satlowski
And of course, soon to be followed in
April by our world greatest Shrine Circus
now appearing at Suburban Collection
Showplace, April 7-10 and for a very limited
engagement on April 5 in Port Huron!!
These events support our Temple and its finances. We’ve
moved away from asking our Nobles to support our fund
raisers. We do now however, ask for your support in time,
time committed to assisting with events. I am asking all
our Nobles, old and new to come out and assist us in
making these events a great time for our fraternity and
for those who come to see our shows.
our Nobles and families. Come out and enjoy our circus.
Bring the kids and grand kids out, work the circus for a
short time while the kids and grand kids enjoy the circus
as our guests. We want your family to have a good time,
enjoying doing what we as Nobles enjoy doing… enjoying
the company of our Shrine friends, our Shrine families…
I encourage everyone to stop in to the Divan office. Say
hello for this new and exciting year. We are off to a great
start. As I write this, we enjoyed almost 200 of our friends
at the Officer Installation. I want to thank everyone
for all the hard work and effort that went into making
this a successful event. I want to thank everyone who
gave up a Sunday to come out and participate in a great
Temple event. We installed a group of men dedicated
to improving our Temple for our Nobles and family.
Dedication, our way to progress. Proud, and humble I am
to be able to serve all of you. We have a chance to make a
difference and that is our goal… to make a difference… to
look back on this adventure and do so with pride because
you, our Nobility, believe we did a great job and made a
difference…
God Bless,
Craig A. Stigleman

Our fraternity is founded on fun. Its time WE make

We as a board, are committed to keeping our budgets

and the second is personal support of Past Master

The Past Master Unit welcomes Worshipful Brother
Thomas Moody to our Unit and look forward to His
being a regular at our meetings and events. Thanks

The Past Master Unit needs you. The Past Master /
Reception Unit Christmas Party was a huge success

Reception Unit
by: George Staten
Greetings to all the members of the Reception Unit. I hope
everybody had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This
was a slow time in the Shrine with not too much happening.
Hope this finds everybody in good health and enjoying the nice
chilly weather we are having. We have been very lucky so far with
only a small amount of snow but you can bet that sooner or later
we will be getting it. So be prepared and meanwhile keep warm.
As I said before, all of the functions that are put on by the Shrine
are not only fund raisers, they are for your enjoyment and if you
don’t attend them, you are not getting your money’s worth.
the Reception Unit for a year. This still stands. Pick-up a petition
from the Shrine Office for your Masonic Lodge and the Shrine
and see how many you can get to join. Maybe we can help have
more candidates at the next Ceremonial.
If anybody wants RECEPTION on their FEZ, let your director
George or Secretary Ray Moore know. The Unit will cover the
cost. Also, if you want a Unit Name Tag let your Secretary know
and again, the Unit will cover the cost.
We still have gold and silver Shrine Fez pins, so sell them if you
can. Call director George at 248-828-4151 and he will mail them
to you.
December 7th was the Shrine Business Meeting and Election of
Officers.
If you are not receiving any notification of meetings, call
Director George. I talked to Bufford Gibson and he is doing
ok. He is not home yet but he says he is doing fine. He is still
recovering from the stroke he had, give him a call at 248669-5958 and let him know we are thinking of him. That will
probably make him feel better.
Also, as I said last month, congratulations are in order for the
new Oriental Guide, our very own Ray Moore. Ray say’s we are
going to lose our Secretary, so would anybody like to take his job?
If you know of any of our members that are not doing very well,
let your director know And he can send them a card and give
them a call.
Again as I said before, our Unit has been given the job of
carrying the Shrine Banner in all the Parades. Everybody needs
the exercise, so if you can, volunteer to help. All of our Parades
for the year are over but we will need help when they start again.
Our next meeting will be Monday, January 25th. Join us for
snacks, dessert, refreshments, a 50/50 drawing and a door prize
and a lot of fellowship. We will have new members coming in so
come out and meet them. With your help we can have a great
meeting.
As I said last month, our Unit Christmas Party Dec. 3rd and
our Shrine Christmas Party Dec. 5th were well attended and
everybody had a great time.
By the time you receive this article the Shrine Sportsman Raffles
will be in a few more weeks, February 6th. Plan on helping the
Shrine or with your Unit’s Wheel Barrow of Cheer Raffle. This
will help to make you eligible for our Unit subsidies. You know
this is one of the ways that we make money so we can donate to
our Shrine Hospitals, other Shrine functions and our subsidies.
We still need a donation of Booze or a monetary donation
for the Wheelbarrow. We are running out of time, so bring
your donation to our meeting January 25th or take your bottle
of booze down to the Shrine Temple and I will pick it up.
Remember, this helps to make you eligible for the subsidies.
Those that don’t work at our fund raisers can do their share by
donating.
We do have dates of February 14 thru 17 and May 22 thru 25 for
Charity Poker Outings. This will be 5:00 pm to 2:00 am. Let me
know if you would like to work and we will set up a day. This will
be at the: Sportsman Bar and Grill, 46858 Dequindre Rd. Utica,
MI 48317. Plan on being a part of our fund raiser.
If you can think of any fund raiser that might be good for the
Unit, come to the meeting and let us know and we will discuss
them.
We have new ties, a Shrine Shirt and a Gray Shrine Sport Jacket
on order. If you want any of these let your Director George know
and he will order them. These will be subsidized by the Unit.
Brothers, as I said before at one of our meetings of the Reception
Unit, a motion was made to pay half of the fee of any new
Shriner that any Member of the Reception Unit would have join
the Shrine with the stipulation that they be an active member of
Nobles: Would anybody like to volunteer to be the Scribe for the
Unit? Your job would be to put the article in the Moslemite each
month. It’s not a big job and doesn’t take much time. If you are
interested, talk to George.
Brothers, there has been some question on the Subsidies, so here
is the Motion:
October 28, 2013 (Motion at meeting): Motion to have Unit
Member qualifies for subsidies by attending four unit meetings
(one per quarter), contribute to the Wheel Barrel of Cheer and
attend (2) Shrine functions per year and pay dues. The Director
may make exceptions based on circumstances. Motion made by
Stan Miller and Second by Joe Amador. Motion passed.
Since that time, motion was made to change motion to subsidize
members only.
Dates to Remember:
Jan. 21 thru Jan. 24 – East West Shrine Game.
Jan. 27 –Appointee’s Party.
Feb. 1 – Shrine Sportsman Raffle Meeting.
Feb. 6 – Shrine Sportsman Raffle.
Feb. – 10 Unit Veterans Party. Mar. 12 – Fellowship Night.
Mar. 26 – Shrine Meat Raffle.

Highlanders
By Roger Brown (TheMightyPiper)
Below is a picture of Teri Knecht who is Kenric’s
wife. As you can see, Teri arrived at our Christmas
party without the peculiar object you see upon her
head in the picture below. This was brought to the
party by Beverly Flaton – Pete Flaton’s wife. Beverly
also was wearing a peculiar thingee on her head as
well, as was Carol Rogers (Jim Roger’s wife). There
were many comparisons made to what they looked
like, but when all was said and done, we still weren’t
sure just exactly what
they were, but finally
accepted them as
Christmas decorations
for your head (I guess).

I have neglected to mention how we now have
an instructor who has been providing us with
invaluable assistance, and participates with us from
time to time. I am referring to Bruce Burt, who is a
much accomplished piper. Bruce is a Grade 1 piper,
has taken first place in many pipe competitions, was
Pipe Major of the Red Thistle band, and is a certified
piping judge. Not since Dave Martin was our
instructor have we been so fortunate to have Bruce
working with us and providing superior instruction.
Bruce doesn’t use the unfortunate “core tunes”
philosophy and encourages us to pursue new music.
I was approached by a brother who was under
the impression that to become a member of the
Highlanders you have to be of Scottish ancestry. Not
true! Whatever your ancestry is, you are welcome
and we encourage you to join. You will be provided

instruction on pipes (start with practice chanter),
drums (start with pad and sticks), or tenor or bass
drum. As a matter of fact, some years ago we had
three members who were of Ukranian ancestry –
Tony Golovan, Ray Karakuc, and Bill Small. There is
a strong Irish contingent (myself included). Speaking
of the Irish contingent, there is an old joke that goes
“the Irish gave the Scots the bagpipe as a joke, but
the Scots didn’t get it”. Anyhow, please come down
on Tuesday evenings. Our current reigning member
from “the auld sod” – Ed Fox, is an accomplished
drummer and has also served as our Drum Major.
The great thing about the Highlanders is that we are
last of the marching units and proud to be! Part of
our practicing is marching as per a Scottish regiment
would do in the British Army. Going down the street
in a parade and watching folks on the side watching
us and cheering, is a great feeling! Sometimes, after
parades, we are rewarded with free beer and food,
but of course we do decline.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact myself
or our Director Scott Clark. Call the Shrine office
and they will tell you how to get in touch. All it takes
is some patience, and, while you are learning your
instrument, you can parade with us in our flag corp.
We are looking forward to seeing you soon!
You can actually buy these at Heart of the Highlands

As you may know, we are looking for supplies/donations from all

Masters and Highlanders Units.
Please keep the supplies coming, as the caravan to the Armory

KEYSTONE KOPS
By Johnny Rad
Hope everyone had a good holiday season, although
by the time this article comes out it will be sometime
in February. I got a little lazy last month and didn’t
have an article ready for publication. What I’m really
saying is, I didn’t have anything interesting to say.
Surprising, I know, since I am the most interesting
man in the world. I don’t always write but when I do,
it’s interesting. The last article I wrote, I asked Steve
Gregory to include some pictures he’s taken. Steve
is our resident photographer, always snapping a
picture here or there. The problem is, until now, only
Steve got to see them. When I was looking at the
pictures Steve sent in I noticed someone who looked
a lot like me and I said to myself, self, that is you! I
guess it’s true what they say, the camera does add 10
pounds. I don’t know what my excuse is for the other
50, but I’ll come up with one. So, because of those
pictures Steve sent in, I’ve started to workout again
and it sucks. So lets talk about the Sportsmen’s Raffle
instead, shall we. It came, and it went. The Kops had
another successful raffle. I have no idea how we did
because we haven’t done it yet.
The Kops have a business meeting in January but
that’s old news now, since it’s February. Maybe
we’ll have one in February. So if you’re a Shriner
and looking for a unit to join come on down to
the February meeting. It’s at the Shrine Center in
Southfield, but if you’re a Shriner, you should already
know that. Until next time, that’s all folks.
HAIL TO THE VICTORS AND GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Greetings Ladies of the Household,

WINTER SPORTSMAN’S
RAFFLE by Mike Zelmanski
At the time I wrote this article, it is 4 weeks before
the 2nd Annual Winter Sportsman’s Raffle at the
Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi and with
U.S. bulk postal deliveries, I’m not sure mail delivery
will be completed but, an on-line version will
probably be available.
The Winter Sportsman’s Raffle is important because it
gives us as Shriners the opportunity to showcase our
fraternity to thousands of non-Shriners in attendance.
The venue provides us with exposure to a large crowd
with a demographic make-up that hits us right in our
wheelhouse. You might not realize it, but we and our
event are being scrutinized by our guests throughout
the day. So remember, they are watching us and
perhaps evaluating whether they want to support our
cause or even become a member.

February Moslemite
Childcare will be active attending events the first quarter
of this year starting with Moslems Sportsman’s Raffle
on February 6th where we will have a display setup to
discuss our philanthropy with the Raffle attendees. The
next event will be the Fireman’s Expo held at Suburban
Collection on April 6th followed by the Shrine Circus
April 7th to the 10th.
We need to promote our Philanthropy and our outreach
clinics are the best way to get the word out,Nobles please
talk with your blue lodges about hosting a clinics
Some of you may be an employee or retired from a local
school system,If you are a member of a church, fraternal
group other then Shriners. Stop by the Shrine office and
ask for our information packets, grab some of cards on
the desk that gives out our phone number and list some
of the health issues that our Hospitals treat.
There are kids out there that need our help they just
need to know the great work our Shriners Hospitals can
do for them.
Frank Dougherty
Childcare Director Moslem Shrine.
Did you know we re-branded the Sportsman’s
Raffle? We are calling the event the “Shriners Annual
Sportsman’s Raffle”. We dropped the “Extravaganza”
and added “Shriners” to draw attention to our
fraternity. Plus, with the winter event at the SCS in
Novi and not at our facility, we want everyone to
know it’s a Shrine event.
I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank
You to all Nobles, family and friends that continue
to support our Temple by supporting the Shriners
Sportsman’s Raffle. Without your involvement with
advance ticket sales, volunteering prior to and at the
event, none of our success would be possible. I also
look forward to directing the August 13th Summer
Sportsman’s Raffle under Potentate Craig Stigleman.
I also would like to Thank Pote Craig for his trust
and giving me the opportunity to once again serve
Moslem in this capacity.
