Its work, as the name implies, involves exploring the relationship between faith and conflict as well as interfaith dialogue and training. It mounts over 100 public events every year and to better fund its work the charity has decided, for the first time, to make the venue available to the open market for event hire under the banner of “78 Bishopsgate”. Extremely convenient for the City, this is not a large capacity events venue (see Space Details) and as such can offer a degree of intimacy and dignity. Its very history promotes calm reflection and a sense of perspective which can provide a wonderful “accelerator” to events be they management training seminars, AGM’s, or team away days simply to allow pause for thought. Near destruction and a subsequent rebuilding also imbued it with a sense of joy and optimism that is a wonderful backdrop to any celebratory event. We look forward to welcoming you. Not only will you enjoy it but you will have the satisfaction of knowing that by choosing 78 Bishopsgate you are doing more than holding an event – you are doing good! -4- The History This structure is a rare surviving example of the medieval City churches that were mostly destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666. It is dedicated to St Ethelburga’s, a 7th century abbess of Barking; she was the sister of Saint Erkenwald, a Bishop of London. Its foundation date is unknown, but it was first recorded in 1250 as the church of St Adelburga-the-Virgin. The dedication to "-the-Virgin" was dropped in Puritan times but was later restored. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century – possibly around 1411 – and a small square bell turret was added in 1775. In order to raise revenue for the church, whose parish covered just three acres, a wooden porch was built over its exterior in the 16th century to house two shops. It underwent major changes in 1932, when Bishopsgate was controversially widened. The shops were demolished and the porch dismantled, revealing the façade of the church for the first time in centuries. It suffered modest bomb damage during the London Blitz of the Second World War and was restored in 1953. In 1993, the church was half destroyed when a massive IRA bomb exploded nearby, devastating Bishopsgate and causing an estimated £350M worth of damage. After significant fundraising efforts it was rebuilt to its original plan, though much changed internally. The church now houses the St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. The Centre organises a programme of more than 100 public events a year exploring the relationship between faith and conflict, as well as interfaith dialogue and training. -5- -6- The Spaces We look forward to welcoming you to a truly beautiful venue space in the heart of the city. The Aisle Adjacent to the Nave is the Aisle. This is the perfect catering or break out space and provides a suitable holding area for a reception or registration prior to any event. It has a bar and lounge furniture and access to all amenities including kitchen and toilets. The Garden As part of the re-construction of there was a peaceful garden designed to give a chance to reflect. Recently re-planted it consists of two courtyards. A perfect oasis for a summer event or a break in proceedings during a long day. The Tent This original Bedouin Tent was built to provide a meeting place for the charity and to provide the perfect forum for interfaith and reconciliation discussion. This charity was born from the ashes of the IRA bomb in 1993. When you book an event at 78 Bishopsgate we will automatically enrol yourself or your organisation into a Friends of St Ethelburga’s. This is a free membership that will allow you to then book the venue at discounted rates for the next 12 months and also allow you access to a whole range of charitable activities not ordinarily available including speakers and free sessions. You may well find some relevance in the charity’s programme of activities and there have been examples of effective conflict resolution within corporate situations. The Charity has some of the following aimsTo address the pressing issues of our time, we need to learn how to work together across differences of all kinds. By building and renewing relationships across divisions of conflict, culture and religion we can release new energy and hope. St Ethelburga's offers: • • support for communities experiencing conflict; training courses that share our tools and approaches. We also: • • • support a network of people who build relationships across divisions in their own situations offer a focal point of intellectual and cultural inquiry into new ways of working with difference, division and disagreement stimulate questioning and reflection on the ethics, values and practice of reconciliation. We believe the starting points of building relationships are mutual listening and stimulating curiosity. We use tools to facilitate this which include: • • • Participatory dialogue processes Working with personal story and narrative Coaching and mentoring. Our experience of working with religious differences and conflicting narratives equips us to help with: • • • Complex or sensitive issues Cultural differences of all kinds Situations where core values and identities are at stake. - 13 - Catering Seasoned Events recognises the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and strives to ensure that all its companies operate in a manner that is both ecological and ethical. OUR MISSION Increase energy efficiency. Reduce energy consumption. Reduce water consumption. Minimise CO2 emissions. OUR APPROACH We monitor the working practices of all our suppliers. Our products are sustainable and ethically sourced. We reduce emissions by sourcing local/regional produce, supplies and staff. We recycle paper, glass, toner cartridges and cardboard. We purchased new vehicles with the latest Euro5 energy efficient engines. We use numerous online e-brochures to reduce paper brochures. All lights, computers and electrical equipment are switched off after work. We have regular maintenance of equipment. We provide support to local communities and charities. Seasoned Events conducts business with integrity and courtesy to foster a culture of collaboration and participation with both staff and clients to develop mutually compatible policies that promote sustainable processes. We maximise quality and innovation in our service delivery to exceed our customers’ expectations and we establish methods of harnessing our resources to maximise the benefits these can bring to the implementation of projects that will contribute to the communities within which we work. CSR is a passion driven across our business and is not merely a corporate doctrine. Our ISO 14001 accreditation is consequently an achievement we are rightly proud of and it is this policy which drives our on-going commitments to the environment. OUR GREEN INITIATIVES As part of our on-going commitment to our ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation the Seasoned Events team undertakes three “green initiatives” every year. Our initiatives last year were to reduce the carbon footprint of our team with the Pedometer Challenge where staff walked to meetings and site visits where possible instead of using public transport; by producing electronic contract tenders instead of using reams and reams of paper; and by recycling our waste. The results were fantastic; the team walked over 200 miles, recycled over 10 tonnes of glass, paper and cardboard; and submitted 81% of its tenders electronically. This year we are continuing with our three 2011 initiatives as well as planting 1 tree in a local orchard for every 1,000 guests we serve. All of the team at Seasoned Events is committed to delivering our green initiatives and they have now become part of our daily routines. We hope that together we can create a culture of environmental responsibility within our business. - 14 - - 15 - Contact and Location 78 Bishopsgate David Webster Events Manager London EC2N 4AG T: 0845 548 7878 E: [email protected] Directions to 78 Bishopsgate The venue is located within St Ethelburga’s Church, on the east side of Bishopsgate between St Helen’s Place and Camomile Street.
