These experiences are what help build our students’ character and ambition to be able reach higher and achieve their goals and dreams after high school. Board of Education: Jon Swadley, President; Jack Sherry, Vice President; Dewayne Maylen, Clerk; Sherry Morgan, Terry Swayze, Members On Thursday, May 13, fifty eight Pre-K students participated in graduation. They worked very hard on their program which included a patriotic song as well as showcasing what they had learned this year. They sang the days of the week and the months of the year as well as “The Alphabet Song”. Each student shared with the audience what they wanted to be when they grow up. The program was a huge success and students did a great job! Thank you to the many parents, friends and other family members that took time out of their day to attend. On April 22, the first g r a d e classes at Ethel M. Reed Elementary visited the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma. The trip was made possible through “The Fish Friends” scholarship fund, which allowed all students and faculty free admission. Children were provided an opportunity that was truly educational and unique. The students were excited to learn about marine animals, aquatic science, and the environment. On May 7th the second grade class went to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum. The students had a great time exploring all the hands on activities, especially the tornado simulator and the auto mechanics area which are new exhibits. The students also had the opportunity to pretend to be firefighters, dentists, doctors, computer operators, grocers, judges, television news casters, and experience many other occupations. This was an all day event complete with sack lunches and fun for all. The students and teachers had a great time. The Ethel M. Reed Elementary third grade classes traveled to Oklahoma City on May 6, 2010, to visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Seventy students from Mrs. Hodgins, Mrs. Jenkins, and Mr. Sipes classes attended. The group was greeted by Museum volunteers and staff and was guided to the “Cowboy/Cold Branding” Program. The students learned about cattle branding in the classroom by viewing brands and learning how they are designed. They made a brand of their own design on a piece of leather that they wore as a necklace. A Museum tour guide led the students through the galleries that showcased significant art work illustrating cowboys working cattle. The students also visited the American Cowboy Gallery where they viewed the materials of cowboy culture and viewed different styles of branding irons used in the West. At noon everyone sat down to a sack lunch in the outdoor Luncheon Pavilion. After lunch, the classes broke into smaller groups for informal tours with the chaperones. The trip was funded through a grant sponsored by Bank of America, BancFirst, Bank of the West, Great Plains CocaCola Bottling Company, QUAD GRAPHICS and RBC Dain Rauscher Foundation. Without these sponsors, the Museum would not be able to provide Oklahoma’s youth with this opportunity. I want everyone to know that it is a pleasure to be in Holdenville for this coming school year. We are pleased that the Board of Education chose Barlow and Associates to provide you a superintendent, and I am personally pleased that the board chose me to work with Holdenville Public Schools this year. I pledge myself to keeping the district stable and running smoothly until a permanent superintendent can be hired. A bit of information about me: I have been a school superintendent for 18 years, a principal for 6 years, and have spent 33 years in education. I certainly don’t have all of the answers, but those years of experience have taught me a lot about how a school should operate for the benefit of children. That is our primary mission; to educate and care for the children of the community. Please say hello to me as you see me at school activities. I look forward to getting to know as many people as possible. If you need assistance at school, my door is always open. We will do our best to resolve any issues you have. Thank you and I hope we all have a wonderful school year in 2010-2011. Dr. Bob Neel, Interim Superintendent
