In 1999, when a group of families came together on the land that would become The Reserve at Lake Keowee, they were struck by not only the beautiful landscape but also, and likely more so, by the stunning lakescape. As virtually all residents, Members, and staff of The Reserve will agree, the pure and serene azure waters of Lake Keowee make all the difference and give The Reserve much of its identity. For RLK members Cindy and Erv Burbach, the marina functions as their own personal dock. “We bought our lot with a swim dock, not suitable for boats, because of the view it offered. So, knowing that we had a full-service marina was a big plus for us. We keep our boat in a slip at the marina and find it very convenient.” It is no coincidence that The Reserve’s community master plan centers all of our primary amenities in a village by the water. And it is only fitting that the founders and developers planned and built a full-service, 200-slip private marina—complete with a Commodore, staff, and a scenic halfmile boardwalk skimming the shoreline—so that the Members could enjoy Lake Keowee to its fullest. Indeed, the marina, where the lake meets “We tell our friends: Picture a beautiful Canadian lake and then add perfect weather year round, and you have Lake Keowee. The change of seasons is wonderful. The access to the lake year round is great.” “We looked at lake communities across the Southeast, but in the end, chose The Reserve because of this lake.” — Betsy and Doug Barker, Reserve Members since 2008 the land, is the gateway into the heart of the community, not only in the literal sense but also through the lens of The Reserve’s quintessential lake lifestyle. A Gateway to Fun, for Everyone What distinguishes the marina at The Reserve is that it is connected to a community of more than 650 vibrant, engaged families, their extended families, and circles of friends. It brings families together and is a tie that binds grandfathers to grandsons, mothers to daughters, teenagers to their parents, and neighbors to one another. Sibling rivalry becomes sibling revelry, and “time outs” turn into “time ins.” The noise of everyday life is a joyous one, of laughter, splashes, and long talks on the docks. “Lake Keowee attracts a wide range of people to The Reserve. My family grew up fishing and shrimping on the Bayou, so they love to come to The Reserve because they can fish. Erv can host an executive from Exxon-Mobil, or I can host my brother-in-law, who’s a musician in Louisiana, and they both will feel comfortable and at home here. That’s why we built here.” — Cindy Burbach Doug Barker got the nickname “Captain Doug” in The Reserve community when he started a Sunset Moonlight Cruise three years ago. As many as 14 boats and 57 people have attended this monthly party, going out half an hour before sunset, tying their boats together in Lake Keowee, and celebrating the rise of the full moon. “We also coordinate Float Nights with our neighbors, the Andrews, across “Captain’s Cove.” Eight or ten boats with as many as 35 people have come out, tied up to our dock or anchored nearby, and enjoyed an evening swim with music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres,” Barker says. Unlike many places, The Reserve’s marina is available and accessible to every Member and property owner, allowing everyone to enjoy the lakeside experiences that so often become treasured memories and family traditions. — Cindy and Erv Burbach, RLK Members since 2007 The Burbachs, who have two adult daughters, spend many of their visits on the lake, playing volleyball at the beach near one of Lake Keowee’s waterfalls, or going to the Jumping Off Rocks. And on large occasions like the Fourth of July, Cindy describes the marina as a “home base” of sorts: “We have had 15 house guests before, so we can drop people at the pool while we take others wakeboarding and skiing. I can drop my husband and his friends off to play golf at the club, and the ladies stay out on the lake and relax. It’s a win/win for everyone!” High or Low, ‘Tis Always the Season on Lake Keowee While most lakes are enjoyable only a portion of the year, Lake Keowee knows no such restrictions. Thanks to the moderate climate and four mild, yet distinct, seasons, being out on the lake happens as easily in January and it does in June. “What is huge for us is the amount of time you can enjoy Lake Keowee. It’s not uncommon for us to be wakeboarding over the Thanksgiving Day weekend,” attest the Burbachs. Each December, Reserve residents take to the water for an annual Holiday Boat Caroling event, singing from dock to dock. Warm weekends grace the winter months and enliven the water with boaters who day-dock to grab lunch at The Market, play a round of golf, or simply check the mail at the Village Post Office. “We had long-time friends who were building at The Reserve. We came down to visit them as we looked for a mountain house in Asheville. That night, we all shared a bottle of wine out on their dock. Then and there, we said, ‘Why are we looking in the mountains?’ We really enjoy the people at The Reserve. They were the reason we bought, besides the lake being great. “Our older daughter graduated from Clemson University, and this Christmas, we received cards from several of her college friends, saying they are happy to come ‘boat sit’ at any time,” the Burbachs chuckle. “That’s how much they’ve enjoyed their times on the lake at The Reserve.” The only thing better than the Marina Park at The Reserve at Lake Keowee is what keeps the lake beautiful and the community fun, warm, and inviting: the people themselves. This story is the first in a series that will continue throughout 2012 highlighting the Marina. Photo by EG:IMAGE Photography PGA Professional Greg Rushing and Jon Cesaro, Assistant Pro From the Golf Shop Greg Rushing [email protected] | Golf Committee [email protected] Looking forward to another great year of golf at The Reserve! The golf shop staff would like to wish everyone and their families a year of good health, prosperity and, of course, great golf at The Reserve in 2012! It was kind of “Old Man Winter” to give us so many mid-60 degree days in December and even into January! (For the record, our Doug Barker “long pants count” ended in the single digits this year; a great weather year for you, Doug!) Throughout 2011, your Reserve at Lake Keowee Golf Committee and Handicap Committee both worked very hard in hopes of making everyone’s tournament experiences the best. On behalf of the entire Reserve golfing core, a special thank you goes to Mrs. Kimberly Martin, Mr. Harry Ahlfeldt and Mr. Dick Bishop as their two-year terms on the Golf Committee come to an end. We thank each of you for donating your time, your commitment, and your understanding as you helped with the many improvements made over the past two years. In 2012, we now welcome our new Golf Committee members: Mrs. Kathleen Carney, Mr. Mike Kennedy and Mr. Doug Barker! We have confidence in their ability to bring wonderful and new ideas to the committee. Call the Golf Shop for Tee Times: 864-869-2106 THE WINNER’S CIRCLE As a quick 2011 tournament recap, we would again like to recognize and congratulate our major tournament winners: 2011 Tournament Winners Senior Club Champion Dr. Scott Kabas Member-Guest Champions Wes Bigler and Mark Gresham Ladies’ Member-Guest Pamela Smith, Marion Currow, Paula Wilde and Debra Hatcher Men’s Founders’ Cup Champion Rick Vieth Ladies’ Founders’ Cup Champion Debbie Baughman Jr. Club Champion Scott Adams Men’s Club Champion Dr. Scott Kabas Men’s Club Champion Kathleen Carney Great playing—congratulations to you all! As in every year, the golf shop will continue to encourage more tournament participation from our Primary Members, and urge them to encourage their Legacy Members to join in our competitions! Our Quest to Be the Best! Like many of you with New Year’s resolutions or goals, we in the golf shop have a couple of our own. We would like to make our primary goal this year to provide both the best service and the best communication possible. We have already begun work on meeting our first goal of better service in the following ways: • At Your Service! To provide faster service at the beginning and end of your round, our staff outside will be no fewer than three to four people to take care of bag retrieval, the driving range, club washing, and to meet you and greet you in parking lot. One person will be dedicated to helping at the range and one will be dedicated to the bag drop area. • More Golf Carts! To provide better service throughout your round, we have acquired a new, larger golf cart fleet of 2012 Precedent Club Cars. • Gary at The Turn! To provide better service at the turn, we have hired newcomer Garry Huffman at the Halfway House, who will provide hot food quickly from his new and ever-changing menu. • Fine-Tune Those Clubs! And, finally, if your golf experience is compromised because of your clubs, we may be able to help! The Golf Shop now has a Loft and Lie machine to adjust or fit clubs so you can get the most out of them. To help us reach the second goal, we will provide information you can access using your computer, your feet, or your phone! We will post upcoming events in the weekly Reserve Happenings emails, and on The Reserve website on both the calendar page and the golf page. Select news can be found in the Reflections newsletter on the Reserve website. We will also keep you informed of events when you visit the golf shop with our announcement loop on the TV, sign-up sheets, and the information bulletin board. In addition, your cell phone can be a pipeline of communication if you sign up for our text broadcast while in the golf shop. Finally, urgent messages about changes in events or schedules will be communicated to you via text, email, and/or phone call. To start the new year off right, we have already posted updated 2012 tournament schedule, golf fees and dress code on our golf page in the Members’ section of the website. Sam Crowe, CGCS, Certified Golf Course Superintendent Short-term disruptions provide long-term health in the Life of our Turf 864-868-3062 | [email protected] Our team is excited to welcome the warmer temperatures and “spring green” of new growth on the golf course. It will certainly be another great year of golf at The Reserve! We have planned fewer days of disruption for maintenance, which allows you more days of enjoyment on your course. We continually strive to provide the best possible conditions for your game, each and every round, but sometimes needed cultural practices will affect playing conditions. Although this is sometimes inconvenient, all of our maintenance practices are based on providing for long term and short term needs for maximum turf health. Compacting our routine maintenance schedule this year will allow for less interruption of your game, while still providing for our course’s needs. We are accomplishing this by increasing the size of tines during aerifications, which eliminates two aerification dates during the summer. Also, we have moved the fairway aerification to the summer to speed up recovery. Please make note of the following dates so that you may plan your golf around these cultural practices. April 23–24: Golf course closed on Monday 23 – Aerify greens with 5/8” tine, 2”x 2” spacing with sand topdressing July 16–20: Golf course closed Monday – Friday – Aerify Greens with ¼” tine, Tees, Fairways, Collars and Verticut Fairways October 22–23: Golf course closed Monday 22 – Aerify greens with ½” tine, 2” x 2” spacing with sand topdressing If you have any questions on this or anything else related to The Reserve, please give me a call. Littlejohn’s Grille was opened by Horace Littlejohn after World War II ended, and existed until his death in the 1960s. In the era of segregation, many famous black musicians on the “Chitlin” Circuit (The Blues Road to New York) played at Littlejohn’s Grille. Some of those appearing at the Grill include: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ruth Brown, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, Etta James, Mary Wells, Moms Mabley, James Brown and scores of others! Join us as we step back in history and learn about life at the Littlejohn Grille! May 11 — Friday, 7-9 pm LIVE AT THE RESERVE: Legendary Blues Guitarist Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues Mac Arnold must have known at an early age that his music career would read like a “Who’s Who” of Blues/R&B Legends. His high school band, J Floyd & The Shamrocks, were often joined by none other than Macon, Georgia native, James Brown on piano. After deciding to pursue a professional music career, he joined the Charles Miller group until 1965 when he made the move to Chicago to work with recording artist/saxophonist A.C. Reed. In late 1966, at age 24, came the opportunity of a lifetime to join the Muddy Waters Band and help shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Regular guests of the band included Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop. The Muddy Waters Band shared the stage with the likes of Howlin’ Wolfe, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton—just to name a few! Photo by EG:IMAGE Photography After more than a year with Muddy Waters, Mac formed the Soul Invaders which backed up many artists, including The Temptations and B. B. King. In the early 70’s, he moved to Los Angeles to work at ABC Television and LAFF RECORDS (Redd Foxx). This led to working on the set of Soul Train from 1971 to 1975 and then working with Bill Withers (“Lean On Me”) before moving back to South Carolina in the 80's. Mac now resides in Pelzer, SC, where at the age of ten he got his first taste of the blues when he learned to play his brother Leroy’s home-made guitar. Going back to his roots, Mac is currently serving up "a mess of blues" with his own band, Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues. The band consists of Danny Keylon on bass and vocals, Austin Brashier on guitar and vocals, Max Hightower on keyboards, harmonica, guitar, and vocals, Mike Whitt on drums, and Mac Arnold on vocals, bass and gas can guitars.
