Follow yard rules to enjoy a safe summer
School is out and summer activities are underway! Fort
Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities would like to
share a few safety tips to help keep everyone’s summer a
safe and enjoyable one.

Please be mindful when driving through housing areas
and remember that children are at play.

Small wading pools holding less than 18 inches of
water are only allowed within fenced areas. Children
must be supervised by an adult at all times while using
the pool. Pools must be emptied and stored after each
use.

Trampolines that are in good working order and
equipped with a safety net are permitted in fenced
rear yard areas only. Adult supervision is required
when trampolines are in use. Remember to secure
trampolines during high winds and storms.

Lawn furnishings are allowed, but it is important that
they be stored away on scheduled mowing days. Patio
furniture must be located on the front porch or in the
backyard and should be properly assembled and
maintained for safety and appearance.

Playground equipment must be in the back yard or side
yard if no back yard exists. Residents are responsible
for the supervision, safety and maintenance of the
equipment. Written permission must be obtained
from the FLFHC office to place large playground
equipment outside a fenced yard. Upon move-out,
residents are responsible for any lawn damage caused
by the equipment.


Portable basketball backboards are permitted beside
driveways and must not block access to trash
collection or mowing. Backboards are not permitted in
common area parking lots and cannot be within ten
feet of the street or in cul-de-sacs.
Children are prohibited from playing on or near new
home construction sites, whether or not work is in
progress; in unoccupied homes or their surrounding
yards, in trees, shrubs, or planting in common areas;
on equipment owned by contractors such as mowers,
construction equipment or trailers; or in drainage
ditches or culverts.
Bulk Trash Bins
Reminder, there are bulk trash dump bins located by
Hancock Gate that are available for residents' use at any
time.

Maintenance Messages
In need of touch-up paint?
Grilling & Fire Pits
Stop by the Maintenance Office, located
on Warehouse Road, with a sealable widemouth container, and the staff will be more
than happy to provide you with a small
amount of touch-up paint.
Air Conditioning System
Have your Air-Conditioning system
checked out prior to seasonal use.
Replace the air filter (provided at the
maintenance office for pickup), and
clean debris from the condenser
outside.
Gutters/Downspouts
Please be sure there are no obstructions preventing the flow
of water from your home’s downspouts. If you need your
gutters cleared of debris, contact the maintenance
department and schedule a work order.
Household Hazardous Waste Disposal & Re-use
The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Point (HHWC):
Environmental Division, Bldg. 80; 684-8980; 07001500 M-F. All items are free to drop off and
pickup with a simple signature on the sign-in
sheet. This is the place for almost everything
that is prohibited to transport during your PCS.
If you are just arriving, instead of buying
everything new come by and see if those that
just PCS'd left behind something that you can use.
Example of items taken and re-issued: Anti-freeze, Oil, Oil/
Gas Mixtures, Oil Filters, Paint, Stripper, Thinner, Spray Paint,
Used Batteries (Lead-Acid, NiCad, Alkaline, etc.), Cleansers,
Furniture Polish and Car Wax.
Bulk Pickup
Bulk Pickup is available every
Monday. Please remember to place
your bulk items by the curb no later
than 7:00 a.m. to ensure that those
items get picked up.
Open fires are prohibited outdoors
except in specifically designed
outdoor cooking equipment. Inground fire pits are prohibited.
Barbeque grills and turkey fryers
must be at least 15 feet away from structures when in use.
Turkey fryers should only be used on concrete surfaces.
Never use grills under porches or overhangs. Grills should
not be placed near a building until cooled. Allow ashes
from barbeque grills to completely burn out and cool prior
to discarding them. The metal self-closing type of can is a
good idea to protect your family from fire. Once the coals
are cooled, generally over-night, they may be placed in a
trash bag and disposed of in your regular trash. Always
ensure that LP-gas cylinder valves are turned off at the
cylinder.
Play Time
Please ensure that all skateboards, bicycles,
and other play equipment are stored after
their use for the day. Basketball goals may
remain outdoors as long as they are away
from the curb. Any items that are left out
can cause a safety hazard.
Pest Control
Pest control is available to all of our
residents. If you are having a pest issue,
contact the maintenance department
for a scheduled appointment.
Recycling Services
The recycling collection point is
located at 740 W. Warehouse Rd.
(adjacent to the DB Sales Store). There
are containers for paper (shredded
and whole), glass, cardboard, plastics
and aluminum cans. There are also 35
yellow dumpsters scattered throughout
post that accept paper, plastics and
cans. Please feel free to drop off your recycling at any of
these locations.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Slim Down Fort Leavenworth
Big congratulations to Karen Faircloth
and Alison O'Brien for winning our 12week Slim-Down Fort Leavenworth
challenge. Karen and Alison used
every resource we provided ~
including visits with nutritionists, fitness
experts and the Army Wellness Center
to complete the challenge. They
showed up every single week for weigh
-ins, attended lunch & learn classes
and one-on-one sessions, went to the
gym and kept track of all of their
points.
Mother’s Day Contest Winners
Congratulations to Kristin Springer and Allison Mueller for winning our Mother's Day contests. Eight year-old Georgia
and three year-old Archer had some pretty cute things to say about their moms. Each mom took home flowers and
a very nice gift!

10 Tips for Living Green

Turn down your thermostat 2 degrees in the winter
turn it up 2 degrees in the summer. By doing this,
you can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by
2,000 pounds annually. Use reflective curtains to
regulate the sunlight coming into your home to aide
in heating/cooling.
Use green products such as energy-efficient
fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs.
While these light bulbs cost more than the typical
incandescent bulb, they can last up to ten times
longer and only use 1/3 (or less) of the energy as
incandescent bulbs.

Change out your HVAC filter on a regular basis.
Filters are available at the Maintenance Department
– (913) 651-3838.

Use power strips to reduce the amount of phantom
energy wasted. Phantom energy occurs when
appliances, electronics, and chargers are turned off,
but still plugged in and drawing power from the
outlet. In the average home, this can account for as
much as 40% of your energy bill.
5.
When doing laundry, wash
clothing in cold water as much as possible. Also,
consider using drying racks for heavy fabrics such as
jeans or towels.
6.
Recycle whenever possible. Recycling lowers the
need to use energy for activities such as extraction of
raw materials, transportation and manufacturing.
7.
Conserve water and energy for heating water by
reducing the time spent in the shower and by not
leaving the water running when brushing your teeth
or hand washing dishes.
8.
Buy environmentally safe,
biodegradable cleaning
and hygiene products.
9.
Use reusable shopping
bags vs. receiving plastic
bags at stores.
10. Consider carpooling. For
short distances, walk or
bike.

The Daniels Family was given this monthly award for energy conservation efforts including keeping doors and windows
closed while operating the furnace or air conditioning and turning the furnace/air conditioning off when weather permits.
The Daniels family also turns off electronics and lights when they are not in use.

2014 - 2015 Super Saver of the Year Award
On May 7, at the 2015 Army Earth Day and Environmental Awareness Day event held
at the Frontier Conference Center, Frontier Heritage Communities (FLFHC) awarded
their Super Saver of the Year award – valued at $580 – to
the Ross family. During the Ross family’s residence at Fort
Leavenworth, they average 38.5% of electric utility baseline
and generally are at baseline with their gas utility
consumption. The Ross family shares the following energy
conservation tips:
 Turn off lights when not in use
 Unplug appliances/electronics when not in use
 Limit TV use
 Keep heat temperature set at 67F
 Run the dishwasher only when full
 Wash laundry only with cold water (whenever possible)
 Unplug battery chargers as soon as batteries are fully
charged

Kids Corner
Father’s Day Look-alike Contest Rules
In June, we are celebrating dads with a father/child
look-alike contest starting June 1st. The contest is open
to children ages 1 - 18. Submit a recent photo of you and
your dad, or have your photo taken at the Community
Center office located at 220 Hancock Avenue. Photos will
be placed on our Facebook page as part of the judging
process. All submissions must be received in the FLFHC
office no later than June 15th, and winners will be
announced on June 18th.
Coloring Contests:
Birthday Babies!
Stop by the FLFHC office to enter our
monthly birthday drawing. Contest is open
to children ages 1 through 18. All entries
must be received between the 1st and
21st of each month. Winner will receive a
prize and be announced in the next month’s newsletter
and on our FaceBook page.
Children’s coloring contests are available the 1st through the
21st of each month. Coloring sheets are available in the
FLFHC office and on the FLFHC website
