New Community Director
Please join us in welcoming our new Community Director,
Haylee Beard. Haylee comes to Fort Leavenworth Frontier
Heritage Communities with many years of experience in
property management, with her most recent position as a
Regional Property Manager, overseeing multiple properties
in Kansas and Florida. Our prior Community Director Nancy
Thomas, has accepted another position within The
Michaels Organization. We wish Nancy great success and
are excited to bring Haylee on board to our Fort
Leavenworth Community!

Fall Mowing Schedule
Beginning October 5, 2015 Barren Outdoor Solutions will be performing bi-weekly yard maintenance on the
following schedule. Please ensure that all toys, patio furniture, garden hoses and other items that might impede the
Barren team from the maintenance of your yard are put away on your scheduled mowing day. Schedule is subject
to change due to inclement weather. When a weather delay occurs, work will be moved back by one calendar
day. This will be done until all areas are serviced within the calendar week. Any resident that has leaves/lawn
clippings may place them in a bag at the curb on your scheduled mow day and Barren Outdoor Solutions will
dispose of them.

Maintenance Appreciation Month
The month of September was Maintenance
Appreciation Month. To show our appreciation for the
maintenance staff here at Fort Leavenworth Frontier
Heritage Communities, we did a little something
special on Fridays throughout the month. We took
them cookies, had a couple of cook-outs, and ended
the month with a cake. Thank you Maintenance!
Pest Control
Pest control is available to all of our
residents. If you are having a pest issue,
contact the maintenance department
for a scheduled appointment.
Bulk Pickup
Bulk Pickup is available every
Monday. Please remember to
place your bulk items by the curb
no later than 7:00 a.m. to ensure
that those items get picked up.
Recycling Services
The recycling collection point is
located at 740 W. Warehouse Rd.
(adjacent to the DB Sales Store).
There are containers for paper
(shredded and whole), glass,
cardboard, plastics and aluminum
cans. There are also 35 yellow
dumpsters scattered throughout
post that accept paper, plastics and cans. Please
feel free to drop off your recycling at any of these
locations.

Vampire Electronics - How Much Do They Cost?
Vampire electrical loads (or phantom loads) waste energy. These silent thieves, also
known as standby power, refer to devices that continue to draw power when plugged
in but not in active use.
Why do we have vampire electrical loads?
The reason many appliances still draw power when "off," is because we have grown
accustomed to having electronic devices such as our televisions start up
immediately, or respond to the push of a remote control button. For this to happen so
quickly, circuitry in the appliance must be "listening" all the time for a remote control
signal. You can keep a little more money in your wallet by simply putting these
devices on a power strip with an “on/off” button, and being a little more patient in
letting them start back up when flipping the power strip’s button back on.
Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched
off. These “vampire” loads occur with electronics such as VCRs, televisions, stereos,
and computers (see table to right).
Smart strips are another great way to eliminate vampire loads in your home
office. A smart strip senses when the computer or TV is on or off. It shuts off things
such as DVD players and printers, that can draw up to 30 watts when off. Most
smart strips feature at least a couple of plugs that always remain on, for things such
as Wi-Fi routers. A smart strip’s other plugs will automatically turn off when you
power down your TV or computer, eliminating any vampire load caused by those
devices. In addition, smart strips provide the same surge protection that a regular
surge suppressor does, with up to 2875 joules of protection for devices such as flat
screen TVs and computers. Smart strips run from $30 to $40 in price, but can pay for
themselves in less than a year, depending on the number of computer peripherals,
etc., that you have.

The Howell Family was given this monthly award for energy conservation efforts, which included using the
programmable feature of their thermostat for air conditioning and turning off lights in unused rooms.
