or Easter Sunday, 1968, because on April 4th
he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
What we do know is that as his body was
interred, America exploded in the greatest
spate of domestic violence since the Civil
War. Peter Levy examines uprisings that took
place across the United States, with a special
focus on the one that took place in Baltimore,
Maryland, which played a crucial role in the
rise of Spiro Agnew as a national symbol of the
New Right. Peter Levy is Professor of History at
York College, Pennsylvania. He has numerous

knew it was technically illegal for them to live as
a married couple in Virginia because she was of

Ages 11 - Adults. The symbiosis of social forces
and art during the Civil Rights Movement is
evident in the poetry produced from 1955
through 1975. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman explores
the impact of the social movement's upheaval on
American writers and illuminates their artistic
and political contributions to the struggle.
The presentation pays special attention to
poems written in response to the assassination
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as other
key moments of the movement. The poems
are placed in historical context through brief
discussions of the murders of Emmett Till and
Medgar Evers, the bombing of the Sixteenth
Street Baptist Church, and the assassinations
of President John F. Kennedy and Malcolm X.
Jeffrey Lamar Coleman is the author of Words
of Protest, Words of Freedom: Poetry of the
American Civil Rights Movement and Era and
Spirits Distilled: Poems. He is an Associate
Professor of English at St. Mary's College of
Maryland, specializing in multicultural/American

Line Assault on the Segregated South

Ages 11 - Adults. Join Betty Robinson as she
recounts her participation in the Freedom
Summer of 1964 with the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee. Ms. Robinson was
one of thousands of young white northerners
who went south called by the importance of
the Civil Rights Movement. She will speak and
answer questions about that period, share
stories of the two years she spent in the south,
as well as discuss the challenges we face in
our region today. Following the discussion,
we will be viewing the film Freedom Riders.

The Assassination of
Martin Luther King, Jr. and the
Baltimore Riots of 1968

Ages 11 - Adults. We do not know what Martin
Luther King, Jr. would have preached on Palm
or Easter Sunday, 1968, because on April 4th
he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
What we do know is that as his body was
interred, America exploded in the greatest
spate of domestic violence since the Civil
War. Peter Levy examines uprisings that took
place across the United States, with a special
focus on the one that took place in Baltimore,
Maryland, which played a crucial role in the
rise of Spiro Agnew as a national symbol of the
New Right. Peter Levy is Professor of History at
York College, Pennsylvania. He has numerous
publications on the Civil Rights movement. He
holds a B.A. from the University of California,
Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Ages 11 - Adults. It was a shocking reality
that often went unacknowledged, a system of
forced, unpaid labor, mostly affecting Southern
black men, which lasted until World War II.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by
Douglas Blackmon, Slavery by Another Name
tells the stories of men, charged with crimes
like vagrancy, and often guilty of nothing, who
were bought and sold, abused, and subjected
to sometimes deadly working conditions as
unpaid convict labor. Run time of 90 minutes.

volunteers, the Freedom Rides of 1961 took
the civil rights struggle out of the courtroom

and suspenseful story of a time when white and
black volunteers riding a bus into the Deep South
risked being jailed, beaten, or killed, as white
local and state authorities ignored or encouraged

knew it was technically illegal for them to live as
a married couple in Virginia because she was of

Pride and Protest: Poetry of the

and art during the Civil Rights Movement is
evident in the poetry produced from 1955

the impact of the social movement's upheaval on

As the nation marks historic anniversaries of
the Emancipation Proclamation and the March
on Washington, Created Equal brings together
four nationally-acclaimed documentary films
on the long Civil Rights movement.

are placed in historical context through brief
discussions of the murders of Emmett Till and

is handwritten and will fit in a 4.75” x 6.5”

Middle School teacher Michael Chrvala and
his students as they share their experiences
about their annual journey to the Ground Zero

fallen firefighters who perished on that fateful

by the events of 9/11/2001. Mr. Chrvala’s
commitment to remembering the legacy of

Middle School teacher Michael Chrvala and
his students as they share their experiences
about their annual journey to the Ground Zero
site and meeting the families of many of the
fallen firefighters who perished on that fateful
day. This year's program will feature special
guest speakers who were directly affected
by the events of 9/11/2001. Mr. Chrvala’s
commitment to remembering the legacy of
those lost earned him the Tribute World Trade

and the Finksburg Branch wants you to
help lift the spirits of women undergoing
treatments for breast cancer.
Girls Love Mail is a group devoted to
providing the gift of hand-written letters to
breast cancer patients. Your handwritten
letter can make a difference. All it takes
is a little of your time and a woman in
need will receive your personal words
of encouragement. Anyone can write
a letter. You don't have to be a breast
cancer survivor to join us.
Drop your handwritten letter off or create
one at the library and we will take care of
the rest. Please make sure your letter is
handwritten and will fit in a 4.75” x 6.5”
envelope.

Theater Department for an entertaining play

story is about Ferdo and Floof, two really
dumb dogs who are constantly getting into
trouble with their owner Roger, due mainly to
their desire to break his rules. Ferdo and Floof
decide to run away and seek fame and fortune
on their own, but find trouble instead. Ferdo
and Floof must rally their brainpower and learn
that sometimes following the rules is important.

a chance to visit this beautiful island recently
on a trip arranged through The Carroll County

Adults. Join us at the Westminster Branch
Library as we welcome author Robert P. Wack.
Robert P. Wack, the author of Time Bomber,
lives in Carroll County, where he writes and
reads when he isn’t practicing medicine as a
pediatrician. He was born in Washington, DC
and is a graduate of the University of Notre
Dame and Georgetown University Medical
School. Dr. Wack developed an interest in
military history while serving in the Army
Medical Corps, but science fiction remains his
first love. Books will be available for signing.
Gourd Birdhouse Art

Adults. Some birds migrate to warmer climates
during the winter season, while others remain
in the area, and we need to help those
backyard birds survive the cold weather.
A birdhouse made from a gourd can be the
perfect shelter. It can also be a work of art.
Come prepared to create your own art. We
provide the gourds, paint and a few ideas, you
provide the talent. This is a two-part program.

top of their list of usual travel destinations,
more and more Americans have begun visiting
this Caribbean island now that President
Obama has eased travel restrictions. A short
documentary film will be shown that explores
Cuban topography, religious practices, cuisine,
education, etc. You will also see lots of pictures
taken by some Carroll County travelers who had
a chance to visit this beautiful island recently
on a trip arranged through The Carroll County
Chamber of Commerce.
