DOUG NEWCOMBE February 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, I have a few items that I’d like to share with you this month. Newly Elected Officers to the Board of Education Previously I shared that we have two newly elected members on our Board of Education, Carrie Sepeda and Mark Zanotti. We are very fortunate at the Bay City Public Schools to have such dedicated community members willing to provide their service in the leadership our District. At our January Board meeting, our Board of Education was recognized for their service by our staff and students and awarded certificates of appreciation from our Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. Our Bay City Public Schools Board of Education Members are: Pauline Helmling, President Chuck Hewitt, Vice President Ben Gibson, Secretary Mike Wilcox, Treasurer John Billette, Trustee Carrie Sepeda, Trustee Mark Zanotti, Trustee Superintendent Search At a Special Board of Education meeting in November, the Bay City Public Schools’ Board selected the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to conduct an executive search process to identify a new superintendent in light of my retirement plans. To that end, the Board would like to offer opportunities for our parents, staff and the members of our community to provide their thoughts on priority considerations. A survey link has been provided on our home page at www.bcschools.net if you would like to participate in the process. The survey includes opportunities for input on level of education desired, positions previously held that would prove most valuable, areas of expertise, leadership styles, skill areas, personal characteristics, and thoughts on challenges you feel are facing the District. Please use this survey link to provide your thoughts. We value your involvement in this important process! Bay City Noon Optimists Present “Frozen” Our local Noon Optimists are offering the movie, “Frozen” on Sunday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Historic State Theatre – costumes optional! The movie is FREE; non-perishable food donations are appreciated and would benefit the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission. Throughout this novel study, students will complete an in-depth analysis of the narrative structure of their book, as well as various narrative elements. Furthermore, we are focusing on conflicts within the story and analyzing the author’s craft. Students will be assessed at the end of this unit with a Narrative Text Written Response that requires them to explain each Narrative Element in detail, describe their interaction throughout the text, and provide specific details from the text to support each one. Finally, we will be watching the movie adapted from each book and comparing and contrasting the two. As always, students are still required to read 20 minutes each night at home. Please continue encouraging this! Lastly, our book fair was a huge success this year! We want to thank everyone who purchased books and other various products, as well as volunteered their time so that we could make this event possible! We could not have done it without all of your support!! Thank you!! HMS ART was invited to display student work at the Bay City Players during their new show, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Next we will move to Central America and the Caribbean. Please ask your child about Mexico. I appreciate all of you who have continued to sign your child's planner on Thursday evening after I have put their grade in. If you could please send in a box of tissue it would be wonderful. We can always use wipes for our tables or hand sanitizer. Thank you very much. ***From Ms. Bauer: Are you ready for some warm and sunny weather? Because Ms. Bauer's social studies class is! We have been exploring Central America and the Caribbean Islands. We just wrapped up chapter 6 on Mexico and now are digging deep into chapter 7. We hope learning and discussing about the warm beautiful weather, culture, and history of these locations will bring sunshine to Michigan! Please be checking your child's skyward frequently to be making sure he/she is doing well and turning assignments in! ***From Ms. Garcia: Social Studies classes have just started learning about Central America and the Caribbean Islands. Central America and the Caribbean lie in the tropics. Because of this they generally experience warm climates and tropical vegetation. Many people visit these countries because of their physical beauty. 7th Grade *** From Mrs. Fischer: For the month of December, we took a closer look at Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Ask your student why no one sinks in the Dead Sea! We talked about how kosher food was made. Ask your student which meat is forbidden to be eaten by the Jewish people. We explored the areas of Israel’s West bank and Gaza strip and discussed the military actions between the Israelies and Palestinians. We ended this unit on a positive note. Ask your student about the “Teens for Peace” project in Maine, USA which is trying to mend relationships between Middle Eastern teens. We moved on to a large project covering the modern geography, government and social culture of the Middle East. Students worked from a 24 item rubric. They used a large sheet of blank paper and folded it into 12 boxes. They filled all of the boxes on the front and the back of the paper with information on the geography, vocabulary, timelines, symbols, fill in the blanks, biographies, compare/contrast, and illustrations associated with the Middle East. Students were then randomly assigned one box to draw on the white board and then explained their work to the rest of the class. It was a great learning experience and a fun time of interaction. 8th Grade *** From Mrs. Floyd: We have just wrapped up the first six weeks of trimester 2! Wow! We are now halfway through our 8th grade year. We also just finished studying about the Monroe Doctrine, the Missouri Compromise and McCullough v. Maryland. Can your student give you a brief low-down on each of those topics? We will continue to grow our nation over the next six weeks as we expand westward. Please continue to check skyward and remind for grades and important information. SCIENCE NEWS & HAPPENINGS Did you know that an object at rest still possesses energy? That when you place a cold object into a warm object the heat from the warm object is transferred into the colder object to make its temperature increase? Energy in Action is the title of the physics unit for 6th grade science. Students in all three classrooms have been conducting investigations and activities using everyday materials and computer activities to help us answer these and other questions. Ask your student...How is energy transformed from potential to kinetic? How can energy be transformed from one place to another? Students have also been focusing on how energy (potential and kinetic) effects the molecules in the states of matter. We have been learning that in a closed system nothing is gained or lost when the energy transformation takes place. At the completion of our Physics unit, we will be starting our unit on rocks and minerals. Earth Science topics will take us to the end of the year. Start watching the landscape around us for changes in the soil and rocks! -- Ms. Petrosky, Mrs. Richards, and Mr. Kraut HMS FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER Page 5 Author Johnathan Rand is coming to Handy Middle School on Friday, February 27th!
