MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY IS D-III ATHLETICS FACILITIES Misericordia University is a member of the NCAA Division III. The largest of the NCAA’s three divisions, Division III promotes a well-rounded approach to intercollegiate athletics participation. The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student-athletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region. While Division III is best known by some for what it doesn’t offer – athletics scholarships – it has plenty to offer. Knowing that Division III student-athletes play for the love of the game, the D-III experience is structured to help participants develop fully as students, athletes and citizens. Athletics participation at many of the 432 institutions that comprise Division III allows for student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and athletics. That certainly is the case at Misericordia as student-athletes are often active in student government, residence life and other extra-curricular activities. In addition, Division III playing seasons and class schedules are designed to minimize conflicts between athletics and academics and promote academic success. The facilities - all located on campus - include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts. Since 1993, the Anderson Center has provided a home for the Cougars basketball, volleyball and swim teams. The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic/ dance studio. While Division III athletics programs promote a wide range of participation, they don’t sacrifice when it comes to competition. In fact, the NCAA sponsors 36 national championships annually at the Division III level. The building attracts more than 75,000 visitors annually for recreational uses. Misericordia has enjoyed its share of success since joining the Division III ranks in 1992. MU has captured 41 conference titles and sent 19 teams to the NCAA Championships, including the women’s soccer team advancing to the 2012 Final Four. Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the footbal, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs. In addition, several individual efforts have helped put Misericordia on the national map: The Anderson Complex features a synthetic grass field and a six-lane synthetic track, with an eight-lane straightaway, which allow MU’s student-athletes to compete even when weather conditions are less than ideal. Eric Sweeney, swimming: NCAA Division III champion. Willie Chandler, basketball: Second leading scorer in NCAA Division III history. Heather Dougherty, swimming: School’s first NCAA All-American. Sam Helmstetter, women’s soccer: first-team All-American. Michelle Myers, volleyball: Led NCAA Division III in blocks per game. Amy Bower, cross country: All-American. Frank Redmond, track & field: MU’s first track & field All-American. Kim Daniel, field hockey: Seventh all-time in NCAA Division III in career assists. Mike Murphy, baseball: Division III record for hits in a game. Founded in 1924, Misericordia is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution serving both residential and commuting students. Sponsored by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, MU is one of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States and welcomes individuals from all faiths and offers a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. MU offers 32 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; and Professional Studies and Social Sciences. The University is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. These values are found throughout the University, from programs of study to service projects. The hallmark of MU is a dedicated faculty and a high quality core liberal arts and sciences curriculum. With 3,012 students, including 1,886 full-time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Small class size ensures personalized attention and a 12:1 student/faculty ratio allows students and faculty to truly know one another. Located in Dallas, PA, MU’s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere and is only nine miles from Wilkes-Barre and two hours from NYC and Philadelphia. The Misericordia softball team has called Anderson Field home since 1992. Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, Anderson Athletic Complex and Anderson Fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia University. Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to MU and the region. The Misericordia tennis complex opened in 2004 as part of a gift by the M & T Foundation. Honoring the Robert Tambur family, Tambur Field was christened in 2013 as the new home for the MU baseball team. McGeehan Field, named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan ‘46, opened in 2012 and provides a second artificial grass venue for the MU field hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams. In addition, the John & Mary Metz Fieldhouse was constructed in 2012 and provides meeting and locker room space for the MU football, soccer, field hockey, track & field, baseball and lacrosse teams. The 21,750 square-foot facility is named for long time board of trustee member John Metz and his wife and recognizes their contributions to the MU community. Coaching Staff PETE EGBERT Head Coach Pete Egbert is entering his seventh season as head baseball coach at Misericordia University where he also serves as the Fitness Center Coordinator. In 11 seasons as a head coach (including five at Fitchburg (MA) State), Egbert has been named conference Coach of the Year five times. His career mark stands at 254-185, which includes a 163-98 record at MU. A year ago, he guided the Cougars to their best season ever with a 39-11 record and a third-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Egbert’s teams have set MU records for wins in a season every year since 2009 and have won three straight Freedom Conference championships. The 2012 team earned the program’s first-ever national ranking, reaching the #10 spot in the country. In 2010, Egbert was named Coach of the Year in the Freedom Conference and ECAC South after leading the Cougars to a 30-16 record. MU won the Freedom Conference championship and advanced to the winner’s bracket final of the NCAA MidAtlantic Regional Tournament. His players have earned All-Region honors 12 times. In 2012, outfielder Kenny Durling was named an ABCA All-American and Evan Robaczewski was selected as Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Year. Durling and Andrew Tressa were named to the All-Region First Team in 2013. Egbert was named PAC Coach of the year in his first season after leading the 2008 MU squad to15 wins in his first season and a berth in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoffs. During his time at Fitchburg State, he led the Falcons to four playoff berths and was a three-time MASCAC Coach of the Year. Egbert earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Missouri and holds a master’s in physical education/athletics administration from Springfield College. CHRIS TUTTLE Graduate Assistant Coach Chris Tuttle is in his second season as a member of the Misericordia University baseball coaching staff. A graduate of Misericordia, Tuttle will serve as the graduate assistant/recruiting coordinator after spending one season as a volunteer assistant coach. Tuttle works primarily with catchers and hitters. As a player, he led the Cougars to back-to-back Freedom Conference championships in 2011 and 2012. A four-year starter, he served as team-captain during a senior season in which he developed into one of the top defensive catchers in the region. He finished his career tied for first in MU history in career (.995) and single-season (1.000) fielding percentage (2010). Tuttle also played one season with the Seacoast Mavericks of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Tuttle earned a degree in interdisciplinary studies and is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational management. PAT CLARK Assistant Coach Pat Clark enters his second year as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater. Clark works with MU pitchers and serves as the Camps Coordinator. Clark graduated from MU in 2012 as the Cougars all-time leader in innings (217), wins (17), innings in a season (80) and strikeouts in a season (58). His career strikeout toal of 134 is third and his eight wins in 2012 rank second all-time in a season. Clark earned Freedom Conference Pitcher of the Week honors multiple times and was named a third-team All-Region selection in 2011. He also won the first ever NCAA tournament game for the Cougars in 2011 - a 3-1 win over Messiah. Coaching Staff DAVID GARGONE Assistant Coach David Gargone enters his fourth year coaching baseball at Misericordia and eighth year coaching at the collegiate level. Prior to coming to MU, Gargone spent three seasons as an assistant at nearby Keystone College and two seasons as an assistant at Rockford College (IL) of the Northern Athletics Conference. Gargone also played collegiately for three seasons at the University of Scranton. An assistant professor in MU’s business department since 2010, Gargone has taught a wide range of sport management courses and helped numerous students secure internships and jobs with organizations throughout professional sports. A business management graduate of the University of Scranton, Gargone earned an M.A. in teaching from Rockford College and an Ed.D. in sport management with a specialization in sport marketing from the United States Sports Academy. Since 2008, he has spent his summers as Director of Athletics and Programming at Camp Winaukee (Moultonboro, NH), a residential sports and adventure camp for boys. ANDREW BENNETT Assistant Coach Andrew Bennett enters his third season as a member of the Misericordia Baseball coaching staff. He will work with Cougar hitters and infielders. A graduate of Hamline University (MN), Bennett spent one year as an assistant coach at his alma mater before becoming the head varsity baseball coach at Minneapolis South High School. In two seasons at South, Bennett led the Tigers to back-to-back conference championships and an overall record of 30-12. At Hamline, Bennett was a three-time All-MIAC team and the All-Midwest Region team selection. He twice garnered ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American honors and currently holds the career home run record at Hamline. He also played summer baseball in both the former Central Illinois Collegiate League and the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League. Bennett also played parts of two seasons professionally with the St. Paul Saints of the independent American Association and the Southern Illinois Miners of the independent Frontier League. Bennett graduated from Hamline with degrees in physics and mathematics and earned his master’s in organizational management from MU. He also teaches in the business department at Misericordia. 2014 Season Preview The only difference between this year’s baseball team and last year’s Freedom Conference Championship team is pretty much everything. a year ago with a .429 on-base percentage. He also proved to be one of the league’s top first basemen by posting a .993 fielding percentage. The Cougars of Head Coach Pete Egbert are ranked 24th in the nation in the pre-season, but Egbert admits that there are many unknowns surrounding this year’s squad. Faria returns behind the plate for the Cougars and provides power in the middle of the line-up. He was second on the team with 14 doubles and three home runs a year ago. Misericordia will face LaRoche in the season opener, March 1, in the first of eight games in Fort Pierce, Florida. In addition to the trio of seniors, Egbert is looking to a couple of returnees to fill the open spots in the infield. “It’s still very early to tell if we’re going to be that good,” Egbert said. “I have a huge concern that we lost 73 percent of our innings and we lost 48 percent of our at bats. It’s tough to replace that. You have to, but I don’t know that the formula is necessarily that easy.” Chris Boroch is expected to take over at second base while Kyle Lindsay will transition to third base. What the Cougars lack in experience, they hope to make up with athleticism and Egbert plans to use that to their advantage. While the Cougars may not hit the most home runs in the Freedom Conference, they hope to be among the league leaders in stolen bases and on-base percentage. “From a recruiting standpoint, we’re trying to bring in athletes,” said Egbert. “The best players in high school are often playing shortstop or center field. Last year, we had five kids on the field who were high school shortstops. Their athleticism gave us options. If you can play baseball, you can play baseball.” Three guys who can definitely play baseball the way Egbert wants them to play baseball, are seniors Julian Faria, Joe Tagliarini and Ryan Cacchioli. Cacchioli will be the team’s starting shortstop for the fourth straight season. He finished last season second on the team in batting average (.354), third in hits (54), and he led the team with 16 stolen bases. A four-year starter at first base, Tagliarini hit .301 While the infield is set, the outfield spots are up for grabs. “We’re very young in the outfield,” Egbert said. “We’re going to mix and match in the outfield and try to find the best combination.” Mike Comerford, Nick Hair, Jeremy DeCotiis, Bryce Frankenfield, Zillur Rahim and Evan Bush are some of players in the mix for the outfield spots heading into the season. While the pitching staff lost several accomplished veterans to graduation, the Cougars do return sophomore ace Ryan Dorosh. “Dorosh turned out to be a pretty good pitcher last year and we’re going to look to him to be our ace this year,” said Egbert. “He’s proven that he can be a top of the line starter in the Freedom Conference.” After winning three consecutive Freedom titles, including a 39-11 record a year ago, the Cougars expect to compete at a high level and play well into the month of May. “Our goal is to win the Freedom Championship and play in the NCAA Tournament,” said Egbert. “To do that, we have to prepare every single day and stress the importance of that to our guys.” Prep: Four-year baseball player in high school. 2014 Player Profiles Ryan Cacchioli---Senior, 5’10” Shortstop Hicksville, NY/St. Anthony’s Joe Tagliarini---Senior, 5’9” First Base Aberdeen, NJ/St. John Vianney 2013: Started 46 games...
