Europa
he Granada district of Guadix y El Marquesado,
stretching from the province’s border with Jaén and
Almería, is at the very heart of the Andalusian hinterland. This
is an ancient crossraods between the region’s East and West.
The area’s beauty spots and charming towns are waiting for
us to discover them.
The district is formed by an enormous high plateau located between the Sub-Baetic and Penibetic ranges, its northern
limit is the Sierra de Cazorla and its southern limit is the Sierra Nevada, which separates it from the Mediterranean Sea.
This district is protected by the sierras which have been its
natural barriers since the beginnings of time, linked with La
Alpujarra by the Puerto de la Ragua.

How to get there
A captivating land

he district of Guadix y El Marquesado is a crossroads between the western Spain and Andalusia. Since prehistory it has been an obligatory route and boasts a
complete road network, making it one of the region’s bestcommunicted districts.

Only at 30 minutes away is Granada airport. The A 92,
backbone of Andalusia’s road network, crosses Guadix y El
Marquesado from East to West and a new section of the
dual carriageway links Guadix to Huéneja, in the Almería
direction. Neither must we forget the roads linking the district’s villages or the railway, the best way to travel and enjoy
the view.

In order to make your visit even
more rewarding and to help you get to know this ancient
land, this publication has been divided into two sections. In
the first section you will find information about the district’s
tourist products (heritage, cave-houses, handcrafts, natural
attractions etc.) and in the second part various routes
through its towns and beauty spots are presented.

Cultural crossroads
D
olmens, Iberian remains, and the Roman city of Acci

ancient settling of Guadix y El
Marquesado, a crossroads
dating from the most remote
Antiquity.

The Muslims who came to
the Peninsula in the 8th Century occupied these lands for
centuries. The Morisco
rebellion in 1568 provoked the expulsion of the
Muslim population and
their substitution by
Christian resettlers.

Thus began a new phase in the history of Guadix y El Marquesado.
New fiestas and celebrations were
introduced and the churches and
civil buildings which we can still
admire in each town and village of
the district were raised. The district’s Islamic heritage remained
however as we can see in the
Mudejar churches, agricultural methods, Arab placenames, etc.

he district of Guadix y El Marquesado enjoys a unique monumental heritage, witness to
its long history. The Muslims
left an indelible legacy: castles, city walls, towers, cisterns, baths and above all the
towns with their narrow
streets where time seems to
have stood still since the
middle ages.

O
ne of the identifying characteristics of a people is their cuisine. Guadix y El Marquesado’s cuisine is both simple and delicious, using local products and traditional recipes which have survivied the
march of time. Stews, migas, or fried (garlic) breadcrumbs, gachas, a type
of polenta, gurullos, a sun-dried pasta made of flour, water and salt, shaped like wheat and used in rabbit and game stews, kid or lamb in persillade, marinaded partridge etc...

herrings, papas a lo pobre,
“paupers’” potato stew, paprika with sardines, olla de San

to round it off, tocino de cielo, a delicious egg-custard.
Other products and dishes from the district are “los sustentos”, a
popular stew from Lanteira, Valle del Zalabí’s pork products and cured
meats, its wines, bread, cakes and pastries, while Diezma, is reknowned for
its partridges, cheeses and liqueurs.

dates back to Prehistory. Esparto, chairmaking, wickerwork
and wought iron are other handcrafts practised in the district,
with the added value of each craftsman’s personal stamp.

The clayey Guadix, earth is the raw material for its characteristic pottery with native forms such as water pitchers,
Accitan jars and the Guadix torus. To purchase pieces of
handcrafted pottery we can visit any of the numerous pottery
stands in Purullena, where Accitan jars are made and pottery
is thrown in the Levantine tradition can be bought. In Diezma
we will find esparto and plaited esparto handcrafts.

Excitement is assured in
the Gor bullruns, held during
the celebrations in honour of
San Cayetano, or enjoy the
fiestas celebrated in La Peza in
honour of Our Lady del Rosario. Savour the atmosphere of
pilgrimages such as that of
Our Lady, Virgen de la Cabeza in Esfiliana (Valle del Zalabí), or of San Antón, celebrated in Guadix and in Alcudia,
also in the Valle del Zalabí.
In Andalusia Holy Week
celebrations enjoy a long tradition. It has been celebrated
in Guadix since the 16th Century; its streets, squares and
other spots are an incomparable setting for the processions

Esfiliana’s Pilgrimage
A singular scenery
G
uadix y El Marquesado is a land characterised by its
contrasting scenery: from the foothills of the Sierra
Nevada to the mysterious, arid lunar landscape of the Montes Orientales, or western hills and from the reddish tones of
Hoya de Guadix dale to the green valleys of the rivers that
flow through the district.
From Fonelas to Alicún
The North of the district is arid, a land of ochre shades,
constantly changing as the day progresses. The clayey earth of
Guadix has the highest concentration of caves in Europe, picturesque scenery defined by the contrast of the whitewashed
chimneys of the red-earth cave-houses.

Leafy valleys presided by reddish peaks where caves
abound is the defining characteristic of the West of the district, while the countryside of Marquesado del Zenete heralds
the nearby Sierra Nevada.

The Western hills

beauty of the contrasting scenery are
the inspiration for
this route in which
the attraction of the
past combines with
rural tourism. This is
a land which has long
been witness to the
adventures of Man’s
history.
Alamedilla is a
good spot from
which to contemplate semi-arid surroundings next to
fertile lands irrigated by the Guadahortuna river. We can also visit
Puente del Hacho bridge, a typical
example of 19th-Century French engineering, spanning a large gorge.
Enjoying the delightful, impressive
desert scenery of Pedro Martínez,
dotted with farmhouses among the
hills and gorges, we arrive in Laborcillas which together with Moreda,
constitute the borough
of Morelábor; lands
with a true frontier
nature, as its archaeological remains testify.
The long history of Huélago and
Fonelas can be seen in Prehistoric engravings and Mudejar
architecture. We finish our trip in
Benalúa, an obligatory route
between Jaén and Almería (the
Roman Via Augusta) which
reflects its importance in the district’s history. We are now close
to the A 92, the backbone of
Andalusia, which brings any point
in the region within easy reach.

From the Valleys to the Mountains

concentration of dolmens in
the Iberian Peninsula. It
boasts a funerary complex,
the quality and variety of
whose archaeological remains make it an important
site, not to mention the
beauty of its surroundings.

Guadix, where as well as its
notable cave-houses we can
also admire the impressive
Cerro del Reloj hill.

where numerous farmhouses and villages dot the countryside. In Gor, our destina-
tion, it is impossible not to

the Las Víboras beauty spot.

our constant companion. We are in the
Hoya de Guadix dale,
completely surrounded by
various mountain ranges.
Here we can admire the eroded reddish peaks crowning
the fertile valleys, eternal
guardians which have jealously protected these lands
throughout their History.
We set out
from Darro which, together
with Diezma, nestles in the
foothills of the Sierra Arana,
an ideal base for activities
such as hiking. Towns and vi-
llages in the leafy valleys
bathed by the various tributaries of Fardes contrast
sharply with the naural ochre
walls surrounding them.
Passing through picture postcard scenery we arive in La
Peza, on the northern slopes
of the Sierra Nevada which
majestically crowns all of the
area’s scenery.
Only 7km from Guadix
we come cross Cortes y
Graena, a borough formed
by three different villages situated in a beautiful valley,
the colour of whose vegetation displays an incredible
range of tones. The most
important elements of its
history are the venerable
house caves which were
inabited as far back as the
Muslim occupation. In nearby
Purullena, set among scenery well worth admiring,
visits to the Cuesta del Negro archaeological site and
its large quarter of cavehouses are a must, while its
traditional pottery is a joy
to see.

he ancient city of
Guadix, was a Roman colony Iulia Gemella
Acci, and later the Muslim
town of Guad-Haix (Arabic
for “river of life”). In the 15th
Century it was the seat of
the El Zagal court before
being conquered by the
Catholic Kings. This
long, rich history
can be seen in
its streets, its
squares and
its nume-
rous monuments. A stroll
through the
Alcazaba quarter and its surroundings will
delight
the
senses.

dence of the legacy of the
Christian resettlers. Worthy
of admiration is the 17thCentury Corregidores Balcony on the South façade of
the Town Hall. The Cathedral, built upon the site
of the Main Mosque,
dates from the
16th Century.

and Renaissance interior was
terminated in the Baroque
period while its main façade
recalls the style of Borromini
and its impressive tower rises over the city’s rooftops.

This is the area where
most of the city’s monuments are to be found: the
16th-Century Archbishop’s
Palace and the Renaissance
Villalegre Palace lead us to
the Torreón del Ferro tower. More churches such as
the 16th-Century church of
San Miguel and of the church
of la Magdalena, one of the
oldest in Guadix, are testimony to the city’s Christian
heritage. From the nearby
Mirador de la Magdalena we
can admire some truly beautiful views.
Returning to the medieval quarter, with its narrow
streets, so typical of Muslim

architecture, we will see the Convent of the Conception and
the Peñaflor Palace, a beautiful noble mansion from the
Baroque period. We are now in the oldest part of Guadix,
close to one of its most emblematic buildings: the Alcazaba.

Nestling between mansions and Huerta de los Pastores
is the church of Santiago. This church was built upon the site
of a former mosque. Its Mudejar tower recalling its Islamic

to the Gate of the
same name and on to
the

church of Santa Ana, built

Around Guadix
O
n the outskirts of Guadix are a series of towns
and villages we cannot afford to miss. Set
between mountain ranges from which swift rivers flow and with a
great variety of scenery, their location, history and their inhabitants’
hospitality make them a must.

One of the bourough closest to Guadix is Valle del Zalabí, which comprises three settlement of which Charches is
one. It is located in the Gor foothills, next to the Sierra de
Baza Nature Park. A great day out is to be had in Fraguara de
Charches, a recreational area managed by the Enviromental
Agency. If not, we can always enjoy the town’s cuisine.
Alcudia, plainly visible from El Monterón peak, is also part
of the borough, its past evident in its streetplan. The third settlement is Esfiliana, where we
can enjoy its rich heritage and
beauty spots such as La
Cuñana. Its biograhical museum dedicated to the village’s Baroque sculptor Ruiz

guard over the whole area. Among the heritage to be
admired in the villages is
the ehtnological museum
in Albuñán, in a restored
ancient tinao (a type of
porch) and the medieval
cistern in Cogollos, next to
the imposing brick tower of

he whole of this
route is through the
majestic scenery of the Sierra Nevada foothills. These
boroughs, dotted with small

chestnut trees and the Barranco del Sened gorge, it is
in unequalled scenery, the whitewashed walls of its
houses contrasting
with their red

between chestnut trees and
brooks, postcard scenery
that will linger forever in our
memory.

next stop, standing between
flowing waters and groves of
trees. Its most important
ruins are the two fortresses
known as Castillos de los
Moros, or Castles of the
Moors”.
The mining origins of the
area of Alquife, are reflected
in its very name, from the
Arabic Al-Kahf, meaning “the
grotto”.

Continuing along the
slopes of the Sierra Nevada
we can make out the majestic La Calahorra castle,
regarded as a National Historical and Artistic Monument. It is a Plateresque
fortress from 1509, housing a
Renaissance palace, something which in its time was a
novel concept. With the Sierra Nevada in the background, its beautiful silhouette dominates the surrounding countryside, transporting
us back to earlier times.

Near to La Calahorra is
Aldeire, built around an
ancient Mozarab monastery.
Its fortress, dating back to
the Caliphate, should not be
missed, and neither should
the Arab baths on the banks
of the Los Molinos river, the
place for a beautiful stroll.
Not far away we come Ferreira, whose origins go back
to Prehistoric times and

whose uneven streets have
been endowed over the centuries with a rich heritage.

around a hill upon which the
remains a Muslim castle are

still to be seen. Through it streets run water chanels leading
to the former Islamic baths. The route finishes Huéneja,
strategically placed between the hills and the plains. Here
we can enjoy its delightful natural surroundings which,
thanks to its aquifers, are home to numerous chestnut trees
and watermils.
