Annual Report 2007 3
Dear Friends,
Thanks to the generosity of the people and businesses in our community, the
Bloomington Hospital Foundation had a very successful 2007. In celebration of
our many accomplishments, I present to you our 2007 Bloomington Hospital
Foundation Annual Report.
The theme for our 2007 Annual Report is, “Touching Lives.” As you will read on
the pages that follow, Bloomington Hospital Foundation was able to touch so
very many lives in 2007. For example, thousands of lives have been touched by
the Volunteers In Medicine Clinic, which opened in April and continues today in its important mission of serving
the uninsured of our community.
We continued touching lives by raising our promised $1.4 million toward the purchase of Advanced Cardiac
Equipment. It would not have been possible without the help and support of so many. We reached our goal
in part because of the Gala (which raised nearly $75,000) and major gifts from the Heritage Society,
Partners in Progress, the Business Honor Roll and the Volunteer Auxiliary (which donated $250,000).
And also because of you.
I’m proud to note that in 2007, Ray and Marcie Tichenor partnered with the Children’s Therapy Clinic to create
the Tichenor Fund for Children’s Therapy. Hoosiers Outrun Cancer was our most successful to date raising over
$160,000. And we partnered with local high schools to bring AEDs to sporting events.
The list goes on – and you can read about it all on the coming pages.
We truly had an incredible year. The Foundation raised and received over $3 million. At the same time, the
Foundation provided direct funding for local health care equipment and projects totaling over $2.7 million.
This is extraordinary and I am eager to see how many lives we will touch in 2008.
I, along with the Foundation, appreciated your support in 2007. And whether you contributed money, time or
talents, your gifts have been immeasurable. Thank you for your continued support of the Bloomington Hospital
Foundation. I look forward to continuing our journey of Touching Lives.
Sincerely,
James Laughlin, MD

Touching Lives…Today and Tomorrow
On these pages you will find detailed information describing the programs for which the
Foundation’s dollars were used in 2007. These programs are touching lives in our communities
today and will continue to do so well into tomorrow.
Advanced Cardiac Care
2007 was an exciting year for Advanced Cardiac Care at Bloomington Hospital. The Foundation’s major 2007
project was to fully fund the purchase of a new cardiac catheterization system in the hospital. A $1.4 million grant
from the Foundation was given to the hospital for this state of the art equipment and renovations for housing it.
In November, the newly renovated cardiac catheterization lab opened at Bloomington Hospital. The lab features
the latest in imaging technology and is enhanced with a state-of-the art Philips FD20 digital imaging x-ray system.
The new Philips system will lead to better patient comfort, shorter patient stays and superior patient outcomes.
Major gifts for this project came from the Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, the Heritage Society fund, and local
businesses and corporations participating in the Foundation’s Business Honor Roll, Partners In Progress programs,
and the Hospital Gala. Many generous contributions were
also made by individual donors.
“The Bloomington Hospital Foundation is proud to support
the hospital’s new cath lab. Our physicians perform thousands
of life-enhancing and life-saving procedures in the cath labs
every year,” said Chris Molloy, Vice President of Fund
Development and Executive Director of the Bloomington
Hospital Foundation. “Helping ensure our cardiologists and
health care teams have the most sophisticated equipment to
save lives and improve our community’s health is an honor.”
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the generous
support of the community,” Molloy continued. “Through
thoughtful donations and wonderful support of events like the

Gala, we were able to bring world-class diagnosis and
treatment to the people of south central Indiana, right here,
close to home.”
Cancer Care and Hoosiers Outrun Cancer
All cancer services are coordinated through the Bloomington Hospital Regional Cancer Institute where patients
receive care from excellent, fellowship-trained physicians, dedicated nurses, and a complete multidisciplinary
team working with the most advanced technology in Indiana. The Regional Cancer Institute includes an
inpatient oncology unit, outpatient oncology unit, the Olcott Center for Cancer Education, and two Radiation
Oncology Centers (one in Bloomington and one in Bedford).
Nationally, statistics show one in every two people will experience cancer in their lifetime. That means in some
way or another, cancer touches us all. That is why the Bloomington Hospital Foundation finds it so important to
support cancer care in our community.

Touching Lives…Today and Tomorrow
Volunteers in Medicine Supporter –
Susan Thrasher
“I think the Volunteers in Medicine clinic is very important for the
people in the area that don’t have health coverage and don’t have
a place to go,” Bloomington resident Susan Thrasher recently
said. “It’s a wonderful way to give back to the community – a way
to touch lives and make a real difference.”
Susan, who donated to the Volunteers in Medicine clinic in 2007,
recently retired to Bloomington. “The area has many treasures;
however, many of its residents also have income issues,” she
explained. “There are vast opportunities to give in our
community.”
“You can give money, your time, your talent – anything. Find a
need. Find something you believe in. Find a way to make a difference in someone’s life. For me, Volunteers in
Medicine is an exceptional example of this.”
She also explains that it isn’t just the organization that benefits. “Many people don’t understand until they donate or
volunteer – it makes YOU feel better! The rewards are great for the giver, too.”
Susan understands the importance of Volunteers in Medicine in our community. She has been impressed by the way
the community has responded to the clinic. “It wouldn’t work without the volunteers and the medical community.
There has been a real outpouring.”
She also knows that it will take continued dedication in both donations and volunteer time in order for Volunteers in
Medicine to continue to thrive. “Clearly I think it’s needed in our community. It’s something I believe in. And it’s
something that can and does make a difference in the lives of so many.”
Susan Thrasher is retired but continues to teach an economics class at Ivy Tech and is a tutor/mentor with the
Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. She takes pleasure in gardening.
She also enjoys and promotes the arts in the
area. Her daughter, Sarah, lives in San Francisco.

Touching Lives…in the Future
When you make a donation to the Bloomington Hospital Foundation, you can rest assured
that every dollar counts. As a not-for-profit hospital, in 2007 Bloomington Hospital provided
over $45 million in charity and uncompensated care and community benefit activities. Gifts
to the Foundation make a difference in the hospital’s ability to provide advanced medical
technology and enhanced services to all patients. As stewards of your gifts, we will continue
touching lives in our community throughout 2008.

Heritage Society Members –
Dr. Bill and Janet Anderson
“Bloomington Hospital is the gem of Bloomington’s
medical community,” retired Bloomington OB/GYN Dr. Bill
Anderson recently said. “They’ve provided care not just for
my family but for so many families. Donating to the
Bloomington Hospital Foundation is one of the most
worthwhile projects in the community. It truly deserves our
support.”
Dr. Anderson and his wife Janet are members of the
Foundation’s Heritage Society. “My wife made me join!”
joked Dr. Anderson. “I was a physician in the community
since 1970 and I felt a strong bond to the hospital. I knew
one of the ways my wife and I could activate that bond was
to contribute to the Foundation. It’s our way of supporting the hospital and the community as a whole.”
He noted that the Heritage Society provides an opportunity for people to provide leadership in the giving
process. “It’s a way of indicating to others that this is a worthwhile cause. And it’s a way to help the Foundation
offer resources for special projects.”
One such special project that the Andersons recently supported was the purchase of an additional bladder
ultrasound monitor for the hospital. “It was a need that I personally knew the hospital had. It was nice to be
able to direct our gift to that need.”
When they are not busy volunteering in the community, Bill and Janet Anderson spend time traveling and
gardening. Bill enjoys golfing and has just taken up piano lessons. Janet enjoys playing tennis and being active
in the community. They have three children and six grandchildren and are proud to celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary this year.

Physicians of Heritage Members –
Dr. Timothy and Jill Steiner
“We are very privileged to be physicians,”
said Dr. Timothy Steiner. “And I think we have
an obligation to help our community. Since
Bloomington Hospital is an important part of
this small town community, anything we can
do to make it better, stronger and more
advanced makes Bloomington a better place
to live.”
Dr. Steiner and his wife, Jill, are members of
Bloomington Hospital Foundation’s Physicians
of Heritage. Dr. Steiner joined the Physicians
of Heritage during his first year in practice.
“If I can afford to join in my first year, any
physician can,” noted Dr. Steiner. “It just takes
a little effort and commitment to the hospital
and our community.”
He said he likes the fact that Physicians of Heritage allows physicians – separate from other community
members and businesses – to make contributions to the Foundation. “The number of physicians in the Heritage
Society is a testament that we, as physicians, care about the hospital and our community.”
Dr. Steiner has a special interest in treating high school and college athletes as well as “weekend warriors.”
He spent a year at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation doing a fellowship in Sports Medicine. While there,
he was assistant team physician for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers and team
physician for John Carroll University. Dr. Steiner championed bringing automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
to area high schools.
Timothy and Jill are both from Indiana – Timothy from Carmel and Jill from Fort Wayne. They knew they wanted
to raise their children in Indiana with the same Midwestern-values of their own upbringing. Jill is a pediatric
nurse that now stays home and cares for their two boys – Jack, three years old and Will, one year old. They
both love the outdoors and find time to bike, hike and run.

Second Century Members –
Ray and Marcie Tichenor
“Every child on the planet deserves to live up to their potential,” Marcie Tichenor recently said. “It just so happens
that the children at Bloomington Hospital’s Children’s Therapy Clinic need a little extra help to do so.”
With that in mind, Ray and Marcie Tichenor decided to
make a generous donation to the Bloomington Hospital
Foundation in 2007. A quasi-endowment of $100,000
over three years will set up the Tichenor Fund for
Children’s Therapy.
For sixteen years, the Children’s Therapy Clinic of
Bloomington Hospital has provided specialized and
comprehensive care for our area’s children with special
needs. Its patient population has more than doubled in
the past seven years.
“The Children’s Therapy Clinic gives children chances,” explained Marcie. “Chances to do things in life they might not
have otherwise been able to do.”
Forty-three percent of the clinic’s patients are insured by Medicaid and receive their vital services at a financial loss to
the clinic and hospital. As demand increases dramatically and revenues increase modestly, philanthropy has helped
bridge the gap for the program to continue to meet its mission.
“The Tichenor Fund for Children’s Therapy is a solution to the challenges our Children’s Therapy Clinic faces,” said
Chris Molloy, Vice President of Fund Development and Executive Director of the Foundation. “This fund associates the
name of one of South Central Indiana’s most successful and generous families to the Children’s Therapy Clinic while
providing a stable, permanent and growing endowment to provide our children with the latest therapeutic equipment
and the most up-to-date resources and programs.”
As for the Tichenor’s, they are just happy to have found a cause so worthy of their support. “If everyone would just pick
one thing and support it, we’d all be better for it,” said Marcie. “Ray and I have been so lucky and blessed. We just
wanted to give back to this wonderful community. We know that the Foundation is an integral part to the functioning
of the hospital – so what better way to support our community – and its children – than by giving to the Foundation?”
Ray and Marcie Tichenor are relatively recent retirees. Three years ago they sold their company – T.I.S., Incorporated –
to their children. When they aren’t busy with philanthropy, they enjoy collecting art, gardening and cooking. But their
biggest interest right now is travel – including traveling with their three children, daughters- and son-in-laws, and eight
grandchildren.

Snowflake Festival
In December 1998, the Children’s Therapy Clinic held its first Snowflake Festival, a holiday event designed specifically to
meet the needs of the families and children served by the clinic. The intent was to create an environment where every child
could participate in all of the activities regardless of their abilities.
Each year since 1998, the clinic has tried to improve upon the event, adding new activities while maintaining the original
intent and meaning. Each year also saw attendance grow, until it topped 500 in 2006.
Their building could no longer accommodate the number of people attending, but they could not afford the expense of
renting an outside facility during peak holiday times. The Bloomington Hospital Foundation stepped in to fund an off site
event for 2007 at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Bloomington.
“The best way I could sum up Snowflake is that it is truly a labor of love,” said Pam Felts, Manager, Children’s Therapy
Clinic. “We work for months planning and preparing, designing crafts, shopping for clearance toys for gifts, wrapping
presents, you name it. Some people might think that you would have to be crazy to put that much work and effort and
energy into a three-hour event for kids.
But there lies the difference, really, we
don’t do it for any reason other than love.
Love for our kids and their families, and
for each other.”
“We couldn’t do it of course without the
support of Bloomington Hospital and the
Bloomington Hospital Foundation as well
as incredibly supportive staff members,
extended families and local businesses.”
A special thank you to the following
people who touched so many lives at the
2007 Snowflake Festival through their
generous donations.

Circle of Excellence –
Jim Ed Prow
“I’m getting ready to celebrate my 33rd year here at Bloomington
Hospital,” James Edward (Jim Ed) Prow recently said. “The hospital
has been good to me. And I have a lot of precious memories
especially of those I have worked with in the hospital. What better way
to remember those special people who have passed on than to give
to the Foundation?”
Jim Ed has donated to the Foundation several times over the years.
Many of his donations have been anonymous. His most recent
donation was not anonymous – he made a donation and in return
received his name on a brick in front of the hospital.
“I’ve spent almost half of my life here,” explained Jim Ed. “I wanted
to make sure that people – years and years from now – will see the brick and know I was part of this great organization in
some way.”
“This hospital is like family for me,” he said. “Most of my family is gone. When you don’t have close relatives, the people
you work with become your family. The ups and downs, joys and sadness, passing of the people you work with all become
‘family.’ The hospital has given me a job, a place to call my own, friends and stability. It’s been good.”
So when Jim Ed wants to give back, he thinks of the Foundation. “Giving a gift to the Foundation is a way of expressing
how I feel about the hospital – the care that I have for it and the care it has had for me over the years.”
Jim Ed is a Unit Coordinator in Psych Services. When he’s not busy working nights at the hospital, he spends time studying
genealogy (he belongs to several genealogy societies) or collecting antiques at area auctions. Jim Ed is well known for his
community interest as he is a charter, life member and past President of the Hendricksville Area Association.

Touching Lives…through Planned Giving
The Lasting Legacy Society is the name given to those who participate in planned giving to the Foundation. The generosity of
those that give will touch lives in our hospital for generations to come.
The Lasting Legacy Society is chaired by Jim Elliott. The committee continued its campaign – Where There’s a Will, There’s a
Way – to raise awareness and participation in the Lasting Legacy Society. The campaign includes informational mailings and
seminars.
Why is Planned Giving so important to the Foundation? “Endowments, plus earnings and dividends, account for approximately 75 percent of the Foundation’s investments,” explained Chris Molloy, Vice President for Fund Development and
Executive Director of the Foundation. And those endowments are touching lives.
A planned gift can be expressed in various ways such as giving a bequest, charitable remainder trust, gifts of real estate, gifts
of registered funds and gifts of life insurance. The Foundation encourages you to explore every option to see which may suit
your philanthropic goals.
For more information on making an estate or endowed gift to Bloomington Hospital, please contact Chris Molloy at the
Bloomington Hospital Foundation by calling 812-353-9549.
Much gratitude to the current members of the Lasting Legacy Society:

Lasting Legacy Society –
Susan and Charlie Wier
“Charlie and I love Bloomington Hospital,” Bloomington
resident Susan Wier explained. “We know the importance of
planning for the future for any organization. We want to be a
part of helping keep Bloomington Hospital strong.”
Susan also noted that planned giving is important because so
many people would like to give to charity yet need the assets
they have in order to generate income during their retirement.
“Leaving a bequest in a will allows people to be comfortable
and still be charitable,” she said.
Susan and Charlie believe that the Foundation is vital to the long-term financial success of health care in our
community. “Health care costs and equipment will continue to escalate and it’s vital that there be an
independent organization that can help support the hospital,” she said. “The Foundation is the vehicle that
allows people to give back in appreciation of what the hospital has provided to them, their family, and this
community.”
Since their marriage (a second marriage for both), they have accumulated real estate together. Susan and
Charlie decided to set up a trust to hold their real estate after their deaths. Their children will receive the income
from the trust, and after their children’s deaths, the remainder of the trust will be distributed to charity. “That
way we can provide for all our children throughout their lives and still be able to help our favorite charities,”
she said.
“It’s easy to do planned giving, and it doesn’t take away from your lifestyle while you are alive,” Susan
continued. “It sets a good example for your children and grandchildren that we all need to give back because
we all have been so richly blessed.”
Susan once worked as an LPN at Bloomington Hospital. She is currently a Certified Financial Planner, a
Chartered Financial Consultant and co-owns First American Trust and First American Advisory – financial services
firms managing over $150,000,000 in assets and offer insurance, investment, pension, and mortgage products.
Susan has served the hospital in many capacities, including serving as president of the Local Council of Women
in 2008. Charlie is a retired Geologist. He retired from Indiana University as a Professor of Geology and Head of
the Coal Section of the Geological Survey. He then worked for Amax International as an exploration Geologist
and traveled the world, living for a time in Botswana, Africa. Charlie is a SHIIP volunteer in Community Health
Education and is active in the American Legion.
Both Charlie and Susan enjoy traveling and gardening. They have five grown children and five grandchildren,
three of whom are currently attending college.

Partners in Progress
Partners in Progress is a corporate giving program inaugurated in January of 2006. It gives the Foundation the opportunity
to enhance recognition of generous corporate donors and elevate awareness in the organization and community of these
valued contributors and ambassadors of the Foundation.
Adding to awareness and recognition is the opportunity to have an exchange of ideas with the objective of assisting the
hospital with its mission of excellence in health care. Our 2007 Partners in Progress supported Advanced Cardiology
Equipment and the Olcott Center for Cancer Education. The following corporations are true partners on many levels:

Touching Lives…through Volunteers
In 2007, volunteers of the Foundation and of the hospital itself combined to give countless hours of
time through hundreds of volunteers.
Bloomington Hospital Volunteers
Bloomington Hospital has over 1,000 volunteers! The amount of time and talent that they give to the hospital and the
number of lives they touch is immeasurable. And they don’t just give of their time.
Over the years, the Bloomington Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary has given many donations to many important causes. And
2007 was no exception as the Bloomington Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary gave a $250,000 donation to support Advanced
Cardiac Care.
“We realized that we could not only make a difference for the hospital and the community through our donation, but we
could also be a leader – via a large donation – in showing other potential donors how important we felt it was to raise funds
for the cardiac cath lab,” said Connie Hill, Director of Volunteer Services for Bloomington Hospital and a non-voting
Auxiliary Executive Committee member.
“The mission of the auxiliary is to support the hospital’s mission in taking care of our patients,” she explained. “Our
volunteers give so much of their time and talent. It’s an added bonus for the Volunteer Auxiliary to also be able to donate
money for equipment that will save lives. Our volunteers are proud of that.”
