A HORSE CAN CHANGE A LIFE

Dear Friends,
Behind every successful business, there are usually several success factors.
For a therapeutic riding program, there are five critical areas of impact. The
past year was one in which all five rose to the top!
Our students have remained faithful participants. Some have been coming
to us for more than 30 years. Others, who took a break for a period of time,
came back this past year. In schools and group participants, we saw both
new and returning partners. We are very proud to report that our student
volume went up by 10 percent.

words, ‘walk on’ to his horse. It is very powerful to see
what a motivator this experience can be for children,
especially for Josh. From the moment we pull into
the parking lot, my son is so happy to be here and
I know it is going to be a good day.”

Our incredibly giving volunteers not only donated approximately $500,000
of service, but for the 5th year in a row, they led their own fundraising
campaign and raised more than $35,000 toward the care of our horses!
Additionally, our talented Board of Trustees continues to work very hard on
governing our program and implementing our strategic plan.
Through some diligent efforts on the part of our barn staff and with the
guidance of our horse care professionals, we were able to greatly improve
our horses’ average productivity. We have the healthiest and happiest herd
ever, which translates into even better service to our students.
Our dedicated staff team once again showed their ability to react to
community needs by creating and expanding our program offerings.
One prime example is in the partnership that we developed with the
Volunteers of America in order to better serve veteran populations.
Combining participation with service, the veterans in this year-round
program have overcome many personal obstacles that have carried over into
happier and more productive daily lives.
Of course, none of what we do would be possible without the generous
support of our kind-hearted donors. Their belief in the transformative
power of horses enabled us to end the year with one of the strongest finishes
in our 35-year history!
As we enter the Year of the Horse in 2014, let us all remember how
incredible it is that these majestic animals make such a huge impact on
the lives of those they touch!

Last fall, DJ set his sights on earning a blue
ribbon at our annual horse show. After his
ride, he waited wondering if he would place.
When the judges announced that he won,
DJ’s jaw dropped with surprise and delight.
His pleasure was clearly matched by the
sense of pride on the faces of his parents, his
grandparents and his instructor.

confidence has soared. Not only does he
have a blue ribbon, he now has a sport that
he can call his own!

In 2013, we served 740 students, up 10 percent from 2012.

Longtime volunteer Marian Ruddock has

(nearly half from inner city schools)
witnessed many student milestones that have deepened
her belief in the power of horses. “It’s easy to find joy in
the small miracles that take place here every day,” she
says recalling when . . .
A young man with little confidence, found success with
horses and began to believe in himself.
A teenager who rarely speaks, became so relaxed and
comfortable around the horses that he initiated a
conversation with others.
A student with autism who often rocks back and forth, sat
absolutely still and connected to the world while riding.
A veteran realized she was capable of being more open and
patient with others after interacting with our horses.

More than 60 percent of our students receive
direct financial assistance through our Ridership
Program, thanks to the generosity of our donors.

Marian is one of 250 volunteers who come to the
farm every week to work with our therapy horses and
students. In 2013, our volunteers donated 22,500 hours
equating to $500,000 of service. We thank our volunteers
for giving of themselves. They make a tremendous
difference in the lives of our students.
