A 2009 Report to the Community
YES serves as a lifeline for
kids and families
in challenging times.

Dear Friends and Supporters:
YES 2010 Board of Trustees
amilies were scrambling to make ends meet in 2009 as the
economic downturn was taking its toll. But thanks to strong
support from the Eastside community, YES responded with
compassion and strength. Job loss, economic uncertainty, and
heightened anxiety lead to increased family stress which in turn led to violence
including physical abuse, sexual abuse and suicidal thinking. More youth and
families needed help with more acute problems.
The community’s commitment to YES, especially in hard times, insured
that every kid and family got the help they needed. YES remained the only
mental health service provider in East King County to offer services on
a sliding scale that went all the way to zero. No one was denied help due
to inability to pay during this tough, stressful time. Thanks to a caring
community, YES was able to ‘be there’ for kids and families when they needed
help the most.
YES also continued to meet the needs of a growing and diversifying
Eastside with creative and effective solutions. In order to give access to a wider
arc within the Kirkland Community, YES partnered with the City of Kirkland
to move our satellite facility from Rose Hill to the historic Forbes House in
Juanita. YES addressed bullying, particularly cyber-bullying, with a new
prevention program that invites middle school kids to learn and teach antibullying behavior. YES also started a Teen Advisory Council to give young
people a voice in how YES can better serve teens.
This annual report documents YES’ 2009 achievements and impact on
the youth and families we serve. It also provides recognition to the many,
many donors whose generosity helped make possible the good work that YES
accomplished. Throughout these pages, you will find quotes from adults who
turned to YES for help when they were
kids. Without YES, they could have
been lost to abuse, addiction or suicide,
Thank you for being
possibly not surviving their youth. With
YES, they are now creative, productive
a part of the YES
and healthy adults and a living testament
community.
to what YES did in 2009 and has done for
the last forty-two years.
Thank you for being a part of the
YES community. We appreciate your commitment to YES and look forward to it
continuing as we continue to help Eastside kids and families.

YES by the Numbers
In 2009, YES made a significant, and often lasting, difference
in the lives of our community’s youth and families:
n YES provided 4,463 youth and
families with treatment and
counseling, up 10% from 2008.
YES continued to show a strong
commitment to prevention
by serving 29,980 youth with
prevention & education services,
up 60% from 2008.
n YES continued to be a resource
for the entire Eastside community,
providing services for any youth
or family that needed it. Of all
those served, 40% of YES clients
were low to very low-income. Over
$235,000 was provided through
the YES Lifeline Fund – supported
by community contributions - to
cover the cost of services for those
youth and families unable to pay.
n In addition to services offered
at its Bellevue, Redmond and
Kirkland facilities, YES offered
drug & alcohol, violence
prevention and general counseling
services at 39 Eastside schools,
teen or community centers.
n To better serve a rapidly
diversifying Eastside, 22 YES staff
were bilingual speaking Spanish,
Vietnamese, Farsi, Japanese and
Russian.
n 184 volunteers donated 13,470
hours to YES valued at over
$270,000.
n YES successfully concluded its
five year, $10.7 million capital and
program expansion campaign
in January 2009, meeting and
securing the Kresge Foundation’s
$800,000 challenge grant.
n In partnership with the City of
Kirkland and to be more accessible
to its residents, YES moved its
Kirkland facility from Rose Hill
to the renovated historic Forbes
House at Juanita Beach. The new
site is also home to a University of
Washington Field Learning Center
for Masters of Social Work (MSW)
students – a pilot project between
the UW and YES providing
MSW students with real-world
experience.
n YES developed P.E.A.C.E. which
stands for Peers Educating
and Coaching Empathy.
P.E.A.C.E. is an antibullying/cyber bullying
program patterned after
YES’ highly successful
Teen Dating Violence
prevention program.
Like the TDV program,
P.E.A.C.E. uses teen
mentors to educate
middle and high
schoolers and is
designed to meet a
growing, yet unmet
need in Eastside middle
and high schools.
n YES partnered with several other
organizations to produce the
documentary film, Put This On The
Map. The film features 26 Eastside
youth re-teaching gender and
sexuality and is designed as an
educational tool for teachers and
community leaders.
n The YES Board began a new
strategic planning process to
determine key initiatives and
areas of focus for the next 5 years.
The plan will insure that YES
remains both sustainable and
responsive to community needs.
n YES inaugurated the Teen
Advisory Council to provide
youth with a voice on how
YES can better serve young
people.

“At sixteen I was in over my head because of my
addiction to drugs and alcohol. I’d been arrested,
I was close to dropping out of school and my
relationship with my family was falling apart. After
waking up in the hospital hand-cuffed to a bed on
a DUI charge, I turned to YES for help. My counselor
gave me the tools and knowledge I needed to
understand my addiction and turn my life around.”
Jimmy, 25, assisted through the YES Substance Abuse Counseling
program. Now a commercial real-estate broker.

“My step-father put welts on
my back where no one would
notice them when I was nine.
I was staying away from home
to avoid him and my grades
were suffering. My mom
enrolled me in YES’ SUCCESS
Mentoring program and I met
Dan. He was the positive male
role model I needed. He gave
my life direction and made me
feel cared for.”

In Memory
of Dr. Bob
Thompson
In 2009, YES and our community’s youth
and families lost a dedicated supporter
and advocate. Dr. Bob Thompson served
on the YES Board of Trustees for more
than forty years. He deeply cared about
Eastside youth and tirelessly gave his
time, talent and expertise throughout
those years. We will miss him.

“At times I was unrecognizable
to anyone who knew me, that’s
how badly I was beaten by my
high-school boyfriend. At 18
years old, I came to the Eastside
from 3,000 miles away, escaping
that very violent relationship. All
I had was my baby and a diaper
bag. I still don’t remember how
I got hooked-up with YES, but I
do know that being a part of the
Teen Dating Violence Prevention
Program helped me to understand
what happened to me, create a
framework and recognize my role
in the relationship. I’ve been able
to heal and move on with my life
with my son by my side.”

S
hawn, who is my mentee, has
long struggled in school and
our weekly visits usually involve a
trip to the library to do homework or
organize a chaotic school binder. We
struggle through algebra, research
projects on the internet, and work on
papers. And his hard work is starting
to pay off! He’s turned his grades
around in the last year and is doing
well and is excited about school!
It’s not all homework though.
But mentoring is not about that.
I’m important to him because I show
up consistently, I listen, and I take an
interest in his life. I do not know how
to destroy an enemy Banshee with
the Spartan laser in Halo 3, neither
do I know all the songs in Guitar
Hero, but I do know which shops at
Pike Market will tell you stories about
the legendary ghosts that haunt the
market, and I can find the quickest
path to the tapir exhibit at the
Woodland Park zoo.

The YES SUCCESS program
We explore Seattle neighborhoods
and volunteer with the Eastside
Audubon Society doing native plant
restoration at Marymoor Park. We
also have fun bowling (our goal is
to reach a combined score of 200
one day), playing miniature golf,
and pumpkin carving with other
SUCCESS mentors and mentees.
For me, mentoring has been
incredibly rewarding. I get to share
in Shawn’s wonder in the world and
his enthusiasm for new experiences.
On a trip to the downtown Seattle
library, he stopped dead on the street
to comment on how beautiful the
pigeons were, and he marveled at the
steam coming out of the maintenance
hole covers. Seeing through his eyes
is fascinating and I am constantly
looking at things in new ways
because of him.
I worried at first that I wouldn’t
have all the answers and that
I couldn’t fix things for him.
