The Carls Foundation Gives $1.5 Million to Cancer Center
“He wanted to do something special
for Munson because he had received
such wonderful care there.”
- Elizabeth Stieg, Executive Director
The Carls Foundation
Bill Carls lived the American dream.
He was a true patriot and later in his
life used The Carls Foundation to
express his appreciation for the great
opportunities he found in America
after immigrating from Germany.
Nineteen years after his death, his
Foundation’s board – made up of
individuals he knew and trusted –
continues his lifetime of generosity
with support for community projects,
particularly those that help children.
The Carls Foundation has given a
$1.5 million grant to Munson Medical Center for the new Cowell Family
Cancer Center. Since 1986, The Carls
Foundation has supported Munson
with $3.6 million in gifts.
The Man
Behind the
Foundation
Bill immigrated
to the United
States from
Osnabruck,
Germany in
1924 at the
age of 21.
Like many
immigrants,
he arrived in
New York with next to nothing. He
took the train to Detroit, and leveraged his four years of experience as
an apprentice toolmaker to work his
way up through a series of die shops,
including 11 years as a die engineer
for Chrysler Corporation.
Bill immigrated to the United States from Osnabruck, Germany in 1924 at the age of 21. In 1945,
Bill and two men formed Numatics Operating Valve
Company in Milford. In addition to his engineering
skills, Bill was a talented pen and ink artist.
2
In 1945, Bill and two men formed
Numatics Operating Valve Company
in Milford, opening their first facility
in a three-car garage. Four years later,
Bill invented a unique spool-and-
sleeve pneumatic valve. His design
uses a film of air millionths of an inch
thick to suspend the spool inside the
sleeve. The cushioning effect allows
the valve to operate longer, more consistently, and with fewer breakdowns.
The air valve was considered a totally
new concept that is still used worldwide today in manufacturing everything from automobiles to textiles.
Bill became sole owner of the
company in 1951 and served as
chairman and chief executive officer
of Numatics, Inc., until 1990 when,
at age 87, he sold the company and
its 10 manufacturing plants to the
corporation’s management executives. Bill always shared credit for
the success of Numatics with his first
wife, Marie, who worked beside him
for nearly 30 years until her death in
1981. The couple was well known for
two things: exceptionally hard work
and open-handed generosity.
When asked what college he attended, Bill would reply, “I’ve seen it from
the outside.”
A Genuine, Generous, Genius
Bill was first and foremost a brilliant
inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist. His active mind was always
working on ways to make things
better right up until his death in 1995
at age 92. Bill treated his employees
like extended family and had a strong
desire to help (and feed) people. On
his birthday each March 13, every
employee at every facility was treated
to donuts and coffee. If an employee
or an employee’s family member
died, he often quietly paid the funeral
expenses. Private acts of generosity
In addition to his engineering
skills, Bill was a talented pen and
ink artist. He loved classical music,
rhododendrons, well-behaved
children, photography, and boating.
He also had a great sense of humor,
with a telltale twinkle in his eye.
As a youth in Germany, he enjoyed
participating in “wandervogel,”
singing and playing the guitar
while hiking.
The Traverse City Connection
Bill and Marie loved northern
Michigan and often traveled to
Leland to go fishing. Bill continued
to visit the north after Marie’s death,
and met his second wife in Cadillac.
He wanted to live in Traverse City
and they built a home on the Old
Mission Peninsula.
In 1986, a gift from The Carls
Foundation established the William
and Leni Carls Speech and Hearing
Clinic at Munson Medical Center.
Subsequent gifts allowed Munson to
purchase and equip mobile hearing
labs so that audiologists could travel
to do children’s hearing screenings at
schools around northern Michigan.
The Carls Foundation has supported
many speech and hearing programs
around the state, a special interest
that stemmed from Marie’s hearing
impairment.

Special Label ‘All Hands In Against Cancer’
L. Mawby Wine Supports Cancer Center
“All Hands In Against Cancer” will be
available in the Grand Traverse area
throughout 2014. “We’re contributing
$1 to the campaign for every bottle
sold, so it’s really simple.”
“...everyone has some relationship with
someone who has experienced cancer.
This is an opportunity to do something
to strengthen our human ability to thrive.”
-Larry Mawby
L. Mawby Vineyard in Suttons Bay
produces a special sparkling wine
each year to support a local charity.
“For 2014, we decided the fundraising effort for the Cowell Family
Cancer Center at Munson Medical
Center is the charity of choice for us,”
Larry Mawby said.
Larry was approached about supporting the cancer center by fellow
Leelanau Peninsula fruit grower Ann
Gregory, who sits on the Munson
Healthcare Regional Foundation
Board. A cancer survivor himself,
Larry thought it was a great fit. “Personally, I’ve always felt it is very important as an individual to give back
whatever you can to the community.
I always encourage my fellow business people to look into their heart
and see what is really important to
them, to their family, to their employees, to their customers, to their
community, and do something to
help support that. In this case, I think
the Cowell Family Cancer Center is a
4
really, really worthy cause deserving
of everybody’s support.”
Larry’s own experience gives him
empathy for what others face when
given a cancer diagnosis. “I had colon
cancer 21 years ago and had surgery
and chemotherapy at Munson. I definitely understand the need for a local
cancer center and I appreciate the
work that Munson has done for all
these many years to support patients
in the area who have cancer.”
Larry’s family has grown fruit for
generations. When he graduated
from college, he decided to grow
wine grapes. “My passion for the last
40 years is trying to find what grapes
will grow here and to make the best
wines we possibly can from those
grapes.”
The sparkling wine selected for the
“All Hands in Against Cancer” label
is called “Us.” “I think of ‘Us’ as our
relationship wine,” he said. “This recognizes that everyone has some relationship with someone who has experienced cancer – a friend, yourself, a
loved one – we all have a relationship
with cancer. This is an opportunity to
do something to strengthen our
human ability to thrive.”
“It feels wonderful to be able to do
something,” he added. “Everybody
recognizes this is a really large project. All too often we feel that what
we as individuals can do is such a
small thing. The fact is, everything
helps. Every hand in against cancer
is another hand helping in the right
direction.”

If you love hearing the “thwack”
of a bat connecting with a fast

by local author Jake Smith. And,
if you love or have ever loved a
child, you will be moved to tears
by this must-read of a father’s
devotion. Jake is the associate
publications director at Village
Press, and Wish is his first published novel. It is “fiction with a
mission.”
Jake’s story chronicles a young
family’s odyssey after their son’s
leukemia returns following a brief
remission. Whether you’ve had
cancer, known someone with
cancer, or been spared from the
cancer journey, the story will grab
The message in the subtext is
clear: Everyone has a role to play
in supporting children who are
battling cancer. “Every children’s
hospital has a wish list of things
needed, whether it is gas cards
for the family when they need to
travel for treatment, or something
to help make it just a little easier
for a child going through chemotherapy,” Jake said.
Readers of Wish also are encouraged
to join the bone marrow registry. “A
cheek swab – that’s it, and you could
save someone’s life so their family
doesn’t have to live without their
loved one’s smiles and laughter,” Jake
writes. “You could be a wish come
true for someone today.”
Wish is a tribute to all families who
have endured a child’s cancer diagnosis, and to those in the medical
community who work with pediatric
patients, perform cancer research, or
raise funds for cancer treatment.
Jake and his wife, Vickie, are the
parents of three healthy children.
They used a portion of Jake’s book
advance money to support hospitals that serve children with cancer,
including a donation to Munson
The Stats
Medical Center in memory of Katie
Heintz, a Traverse City teenager who
battled leukemia with great faith (see
page 11 for photos from the annual
Katie Heintz Basketball Tournament). Jake’s goal is to share his
book’s success with hospitals around
the state and nation that provide
pediatric cancer care.
Wish is scheduled for release in May
and will be available on Amazon.

Heart Center Update:
Donor-Supported Programs Impacting Lives
Lisa Aldrich is a walking testimonial
for the life-changing care taking place
at the Webber Heart Center. As a
Munson volunteer, she greets visitors, provides directions, and wheels
patients where they need to go. Not
too long ago, Lisa couldn’t walk 100
feet without having to stop because
of severe shortness of breath. She was
on oxygen 24 hours a day, the result
of pulmonary hypertension, a secondary diagnosis to lupus.

Munson’s new Heart Failure Clinic

When Life Throws a Curve,
Munson’s Patient Needs Fund Can Help
Family finances were unexpectedly tight. The family’s insurance
would not cover name brand
medication, and the $60 a month
needed for Ezra’s daily dose of
Prevacid just wasn’t there.
Ezra was enrolled in Munson’s
Pediatric Feeding Program and
was making progress, but without medication, he could not eat
without pain.
Occupational therapist Dawn
Brown was working with Ezra and
told his parents that funds might
be available through Munson’s
Patient Needs Fund. She successfully applied for a grant for the
Kladder family to cover the cost
of Ezra’s medication. “It was just a
relief because we didn’t know how
we were going to pay for it,” Holly
said. “We had made all of the
adjustments we could make and
there was not any extra money.
When that money was available, it
was a real blessing. We could have
asked our parents for help, but it
was nice to know there was an
option right there at Munson.”

The timing couldn’t have been
worse. Ben and Holly Kladder’s
little son Ezra needed medication
to help manage gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD). The generic brand of medication Ezra took
was discontinued about the same
time Ben’s employer announced a
20 percent pay cut for all employees.
Ben and Holly adopted Ezra shortly
after his birth on Valentine’s Day
2011. He had his first episode of
GERD when he was five days old.
“He started flailing his arms and
legs and it was obvious he was in
distress,” Holly said. “It was a helpless feeling. There are babies who
spit up, but this was so obviously
accompanied by pain.”
likes to sing and he is very musical.
He was singing little tunes before
he could talk.”
After multiple trips to the pediatrician and multiple attempts to
find the right medication, Ezra
started taking generic Prevacid
when he was one month old.
The Kladders enrolled Ezra in the
Pediatric Feeding Program when
he was 14 months old.

David Hunter
David and Nancy
Hunter met as
college students
the summer they
both worked
as water safety
instructors at the
National Music
Camp in Interlochen. Their romance
has spanned 52 years of shared life
that has taken them around the globe.
David’s career in international business found the couple and their two
daughters making homes in Stuttgart,
Germany; in a 1630-circa house on the
canal in the medieval city of Brugge,
Belgium; in Arco, Italy surrounded
by the “jaw-dropping” splendor of the
Italian Alps; and in the old Spanish
colonial city of Queretaro, Mexico.
After a career that involved flying three
million miles, the Hunters decided to
look for a retirement home in Leland,
where they had enjoyed camping and
summer days with their girls. In 2002,
they settled into a home on the north
end of Lake Leelanau.
As they had in every stateside and
international town they called home,
David and Nancy became involved in
the local community. Nancy, a pianist
and organist, served on the Traverse
Symphony Orchestra Board. David,
interested in science and sailing,
joined the Inland Seas Board, the
ShareCare™ of Leelanau, Inc. Board,
and several other boards.
He met Munson Healthcare Regional
Foundation President Des Worthington when the Inland Seas Board asked
her to speak at their board retreat
8
about ways to be more effective. After
he and Nancy hosted an in-home
gathering for the new Cowell Family
Cancer Center, Des and board chair
Charlie Bumb approached him about
serving on the Foundation board. “I
was flattered,” he said. “I think it will
be fun and I’m looking forward to it.”
It was an easy sell. Despite being
“wonderfully healthy” for most of his
life, a health problem in 2012 gave
David first-hand experience with
surgical services at Munson Medical
Center that made him a fan. After
playing golf downstate for several
days in some discomfort, Nancy
insisted they go home so David could
see his doctor. They went to Munson’s
Emergency Department instead,
where David learned his appendix
had burst four days earlier. Surgeon
Thomas Quinn, MD, removed his
appendix laparoscopically. “He did
such an extraordinary job. I had a
wonderful experience at Munson.”
“All of us at some point will have a
need for Munson services,” he added.
“As that need is wonderfully fulfilled,
people become passionate about
Munson and many of them
are people who can and would like
to be more involved in giving.”
David is currently pursuing his
“unfulfilled aspiration to play good
golf ” and fishing off the shore of
Boca Grande, Florida until spring
returns to northern Michigan. The
Foundation, however, did not give
him the winter off – he was sent a list
of donors to call and thank, a job he
is happily doing between tee times.

Chuck Havill Update:
Returning to Good Health
At the end of
January, Chuck
Havill and his
wife, Anne, got the
news they’d hoped
for: a PET scan
showed no presence of cancer cells
in Chuck’s body.
Last August, Chuck was diagnosed
with oropharyngeal squamous cell
carcinoma (cancer of the throat),
caused by a virus. In the December
2013 issue of Focus, Chuck shared
some thoughts about how the new
Cowell Family Cancer Center would
improve care and lessen the burden
on people with cancer. As a member
of the Munson Healthcare Regional
Foundation Board, he knew the facts.
As a person suddenly battling cancer,
he knew the stark reality.
One of the most trying parts of the
experience, Chuck said, was the 90day wait between the end of treatment and the first scan to see if the
treatment worked. “That’s the difficult
time – the waiting,” he said. Chuck
had an appointment with his physician two days after his PET scan in
January, but he couldn’t wait for the
results. He logged into his physician’s
online patient portal where the results
were posted within 24 hours. “I don’t
know if he gets happiness in telling
you good news, so we tried to act surprised when we saw him,” he said.
Chuck will now have a blood test
every three months to monitor his
progress. What lingers is the certainty
that coordinated cancer services
10
delivered in one location is a critical need. “I’ve never, ever felt more
certain that this cancer center is so
incredibly important,” he said. “I just
know what these people with cancer
are going through out there. I cannot
express how important it will be to
have a navigator in place at the cancer
center who is educated on all kinds of
cancer and can answer questions.”
Through his experience, Chuck
developed a profound respect and appreciation for Munson staff who work
with cancer patients. “I’m so very glad
I had my treatment done here,” he
said. “The phenomenal heroes were
the staff members – the nurses, the
receptionists, the technicians. That is
the number one thing that blew me
away, the 50 to 60 staff people I encountered. The doctors are brilliant,
but it’s the everyday workers who give
you hope and reassurance, and they
are very, very knowledgeable.”
Looking ahead, Chuck is enthusiastic
about the floor-by-floor drawings he’s
seen for the new cancer center, which
incorporate elements from some of
the best cancer centers in the nation.
“It is going to be an incredible place of
healing and a peaceful place for those
who are going through something
that is horrendous and scary.”
Chuck continues to recover from the
after effects of treatment, but can now
spend a little less time thinking about
cancer. “I am so incredibly grateful to
my family, my friends, and God. I’m
very happy, but my heart still goes out
to people who are diagnosed with less
than a year to live and to those who
don’t go through treatment because
they can’t afford it.”

Hoops For A Cause
For the ninth consecutive year, the Katie Heintz Basketball Tournament
was held at St. Francis High School in March. The tournament raises
money for pediatric oncology at Munson Medical Center and was
established as a memorial for Katie Heintz, a 16 year old St. Francis
student who lost her battle to leukemia in 2005. Students from the
Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools took on the faculty during the
contest and the finale was a battle between teams coached by John
Cueter, Director of Fox Motors and Otto Belovich, owner of Cherry
Capital Subaru Cadillac and Traverse Motors. More than $8,000
was raised to benefit pediatric hematology and oncology patients
at Munson.

Countdown to Cancer Center
Groundbreaking
After years of planning and preparation, a ceremonial groundbreaking
for the $45 million Cowell Family
Cancer Center will take place on
Thursday, May 1, at 1:30 pm. Donors,
physicians, employees, and the media
are invited to be on hand for a brief
ceremony.
The new three-story cancer center
is expected to open in 2016 and
fundraising for the center continues.
Preliminary work has been com-
pleted at the site on
Beaumont Place just
north of Munson
Medical Center.
Eight buildings have
been removed on
adjacent parcels to
create a park-like setting. More than
300 members of Munson’s support
staff have been relocated to Copper
Ridge to reduce traffic congestion.
An historic section of Kids’ Creek
has been restored to its natural
setting and flows just north of
the cancer center.
Employee Donations
Complete Campaign
The annual employee giving
campaign in March gave employees
another opportunity to support the
new cancer center. Employees have
donated more than $100,000
toward the new center, in addition
to supporting the Patient Needs
Fund, Munson Hospice, and a
variety of other funds.
