Ventana Vista Students: Global Citizens
Part of CFSD’s Commitment to Learning in the 21st century includes teaching students
24, 2009
Digital Age Literacy. This includes the skills of Interactive Communication,APRIL
Technology
& Tools, Cultural Competence, and Global Awareness. In order for teachers to develop
these skills in students, CFSD has offered a professional development opportunity for
each of the last three summers that involves a study-abroad experience and travel to
, 2008
China. Many of you may recall that our art teacher, Janet Hasson, forged a relationship
with a school in Nanjing, China when she visited as part of the group that traveled there
during the summer of 2008.
As a result, last year’s fourth graders learned about the Chinese culture and created
traditional Chinese calligraphy scrolls. Thanks to Ms. Hasson’s efforts, and the efforts of
several Ventana Vista parents, we hosted a large Chinese Festival that coincided with the
Chinese New Year. Original artwork from students at the school Ms. Hasson visited,
Nanjing Youfu West Street Primary School, was featured at our festival.
The principal of Youfu and I have been in correspondence over the last year. When I had
the honor of visiting there with the group of CFSD educators this past summer, Ventana
Vista formally became a Sister School with Youfu. We became a member of a group of
schools committed to building friendly, collaborative relationships that facilitate
communication and interaction among different cultures across the globe. Over the last
several weeks, I have been visiting K-5 classrooms at Ventana Vista to conduct a lesson
about the similarities and differences between the U.S. and China, and to serve an
introduction to our newly formed relationship with Youfu.
Approximately two weeks ago, I received a surprising email from the principal of our
Sister School, offering an all-expense-paid trip back to Nanjing to participate in an
International Forum with the leaders of the schools in this cooperative organization. I will
be leaving on October 30 to travel there and to spend a week with 16 school leaders,
representing three cities in China, as well as Manchester, Britain; Melbourne, Australia;
and Singapore.
Each class at Ventana Vista is busy creating a scrapbook page to contribute to a gift that I
will bring to Youfu by way of introduction to our school. I look forward to learning more
about how we will develop our relationships with these global partners.
At the November FFO meeting, I will be sharing more about this experience and what it
means for our students. Please consider joining us on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30
PM. What an incredible opportunity for our school community!

What’s Happening in Third Grade
Third grade is really chugging along. We have learned so much already. Students are
developing their writing skills using the Six Traits. Currently, third graders are learning how to write
focused paragraphs with a lead and closing sentence, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Reading groups have now started where students meet in small groups to read, discuss the
elements of literature and build fluency and comprehension skills. In conjunction with this, they are
also learning about text features (captions, subheadings, bold words, pictures) to increase
comprehension.
In Science, we are studying the scientific method and have done some cool experiments to
test and observe. We are also learning about the structure of the Earth. Specifically, students need to
know the layers of the Earth and the different types and uses of rocks.
Math is always fun. We have just completed our graphing unit and our focus is now on
number systems: place value, comparing, ordering numbers and rounding/estimating. Addition and
subtraction will soon follow.
Third graders are also becoming savvy on the computer. Keyboarding, Word, and some
PowerPoint skills are being developed.
Stay tuned for information regarding our Halloween Extravaganza. Every year, third
graders carve pumpkins to light up the third grade stairway. It’s a beautiful sight.

Help our Students!
Parents, please help our students be their “Bobcat Best” in the morning by reminding
them to stay on the paved areas of the school. Children should NOT be playing in the
rocks, on the dirt hill or in the gravel area. The expectation is that students will be calmly
lining up at the front gate for release to their classrooms.
“Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Your Best, Be a Bobcat!”
Yearbook Reminder
Reminder!....Yearbook orders are due Monday, November 2nd. If you have not
already placed an order, please do so now.
The cost of a yearbook is $25. The memories are priceless!
Forms are available in the office.

MUSIC NOTES
Kindergarteners are learning all about the beat right now in music. We
pat the beat, draw pictures to show the beat, listen to our heartbeats
with a stethoscope and play the beat with rhythms sticks, triangles,
rainsticks and guiros. We enjoy listening to the “Anvil Chorus” and
playing along with triangles. We will perform the play “Bugz!” during
our second rotation after winter break.
First graders have been reading notes on the music staff. We are reading So and Mi, quarter
notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests. We enjoy rapping the song “Loose Tooth,” recording
ourselves with Garage Band and singing “Ode To The Treble Clef.” We will write many of the
songs we know in our very own music books using all the notes we’ve learned. After winter
break we will perform the folk tale “Tikki Tikki Tembo.”
Second graders love to sing “Mumble Grumble.” It was Mrs. Johnson’s favorite song from her
second grade music class. Its all about doing things like combing out snarls from our hair, tying
our shoes, finishing our food, and cleaning our rooms…“you don’t have to like it, but its got to be
done--Yeah….” Our music staff notes are So, Mi, La, Do and Re, and we read the rhythms that
have quarter notes, eighth notes, half notes and quarter rests. We will perform the African folk
tale “The Fierce Creature” during our second rotation after winter break.
Third graders have made the huge transition from Tah and Ti Ti to counting the beat with
numbers (one and two and three and). We are also reading note letters now, too. We learned that
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti and high Do can move around the staff, but that the music letters A, B,
C, D, E, F and G are always in the same spot. We enjoyed writing our own verses to the song
“Rocky Mountain.” The song gets longer and longer every year! After winter break, during our
second rotation, we will perform a play about Greek Mythology: “Theseus and the Minotaur.”
Fourth graders are kicking high with Recorder Karate! Many of us have earned upper level belts
by studying on our own at home. We love that our website has a “play along” feature so we can
hear the background while we play. We are becoming independent musicians! During the
second rotation, after winter break, we will perform the historic musical, “The Adventures of
Lewis and Clark.”
In fifth grade we put it all together and start writing major compositions. We are writing in ABA
form using all the notes and all the rhythms we’ve learned through the years. We also enjoy
Calypso Music. We are learning about it, playing it and singing it! One of our favorite music
activities is our xylophone ensemble, where we strive to play four parts together; soprano, alto,
bass and contrabass. We look forward to our second rotation musical: “Vacation on Mars.”
Additional important information: Due to the change in specialist schedules, not all grade levels
will perform their play on the same day like in years past. Watch your child’s backpack for notes
about their upcoming performances.
Have a musical day!

Dear Parents:
The Pima County Health Department has announced all Health Department
H1N1 vaccine clinics will be held at Tucson Electric Park, 2500 E. Ajo Way.
Effective October 26, 2009, the H1N1 vaccine clinic schedule will be:
• Mondays from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
• Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
• Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
• Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon
Priority groups for the H1N1 nasal spray include:
• Healthy young children through young adults aged 2 to 24 years of age
• Healthy household contacts and caregivers, who are less than 50 years old, of
children younger than 6 months of age - because younger infants are at higher
risk of influenza related complications and cannot be vaccinated
• Healthy healthcare and emergency medical services personnel - because
infections among healthcare workers have been reported and this can be a
potential source of infection for vulnerable patients. Also, increased absenteeism
in this population could reduce healthcare system capacity
Priority groups for injectable H1N1 vaccine are:
• Pregnant women - because they are at higher risk of complications and can
potentially provide protection to infants who cannot be vaccinated
• Children from 6 months through 18 years of age - because of the many cases
of novel H1N1 influenza in children and they are in close contact with each other
in school and day care settings, which increases the likelihood of disease spread
• Young adults 19 through 24 years of age - because of the many cases of novel
H1N1 influenza in these healthy young adults and they often live, work, and
study in close proximity, and they are a frequently mobile population
• Healthcare workers who have a greater exposure rate to H1N1 influenza
• Caregivers of infants less than 6 months who cannot be vaccinated
The H1N1 is free to those receiving the vaccine. No other Health Department
immunizations will be available at these specialized clinics.
Please refer to the Health Department’s website at www.pimahealth.org or call
the Flu Information Line at 243-7800 or 1-866-939-7462.

THANKS TO OUR
2008-2009 DONORS
www.cfsdfoundation.org
The CFSD Foundation saved twelve (12) teaching positions across K-12 through its $500,000 gift for 2009-2010.
The 12 positions included 5 at the elementary level (all four schools), 2 at the middle level (both schools), and 5
at the high school level. These positions mean that class sizes everywhere are smaller than they would have been
otherwise.
Additionally, at the high school level more sections of English, social studies, and science could be offered.
Without these sections, not only would other classes be potentially larger but some students would not have had
access to a full daily schedule of the courses that they wanted to take.
