2010-11 annual report g n i Mov d r a w r o F Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan Moving Forward WOMEN’S RESOURCE CENTER OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN 2010-2011 Children’s Learning Center students get moving during the annual Bike Day. MISSION | VALUES | VISION The Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan is committed to equality, justice and the well-being of women. To that end, we will engage our community and encourage all to work with us toward those goals. Eliminating the culture of violence Quality programs and services Understanding and respecting our diversity Advocacy for those in need Leadership in our community Integrity in all we do Taking action for social change Yielding positive results To be recognized as leaders for social change and respected as a strong voice for women, children and families. Our community will see us as an inclusive organization known for excellent services, effective programs and a dedicated staff. We will be responsible stewards and operate a fiscally sound organization, encouraging others to see us as a worthy investment and valuable community asset. “You keep us moving forward!!!” To Our Donors and Supporters: Oh my!!!! What a year 2010-11 was for the WRCNM. Just when I think things should slow down and we should be able to just do our work and serve those we have programming for, another challenge, another thing to do, or another force appears and propels us forward. As the first quarter ended, an opportunity to purchase Gold Mine North presented itself. In our planning activities this was on the plate and suddenly this wonderful building was there to buy. As the Board, Finance Committee and staff provided input, the writing was on the wall that we needed to forge ahead. An offer was placed, financing secured and we were on our way to having a permanent home for our expanded business venture. By mid-April we moved in. The new store is magnificent and the WRCNM took another giant step forward to provide long term financial stability for ourselves. Jan Mancinelli Forward motion also took on a new face with the launch of the 100 Men Campaign. Not only was it the first attempt to actively engage men in our work, but it exceeded our expectations when 125 men supported the campaign. This conscious move forward helped us put in motion new activities, education and awareness, new messaging and new voices to make progress in the fight to end violence against women. I am continually amazed and proud of all those who are part of our winning WRCNM team - volunteers, Board, staff, donors and this wonderfully generous and caring community. The agency stays in constant motion because the work propels us to do so. Speaking up to right wrongs, speaking out against injustice, seeking equality and justice are components providing the energy to keep on - keeping on. Thanks to all of you and the part you play to keep us moving forward!!! Sincerely, Jan Mancinelli Executive Director Programs & Services Review Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan The Children’s Learning Center • An educational environment for children age 2-1/2 through 11, licensed through the State of Michigan • 85 enrolled students • $7,464 in scholarships provided to families in need • 100% of parents surveyed said child had a positive experience Children’s Lea rn ing Center frie nds Project FREE Preschool • A state-funded school readiness program for four-year-olds • 2 certified teachers help build students’ social and academic skills • 34 preschool students graduated • 100% of parents surveyed were satisfied with education and care their children received te school gradua re Project FREE P Community Playgroups • 4 communities hosted free, weekly WRCNM Playgroups: Alanson, Petoskey, Boyne City and East Jordan • 279 parents and children participated • 2 trained facilitators • 97% of parents surveyed learned new parenting techniques Free Commun it y Playgroups Project FREE students love a good book “The grant helped us financially, as well as helped with my peace of mind.” “The WRCNM has helped me and my family through some very difficult times in the last 6 months. The grant that was awarded to me has helped my 3 year-old daughter in preschool, as well as helped me be able to work. It also gave me the option to continue to send my two older children to the WRCNM after school. The grant helped us financially, as well as helped with my peace of mind. I feel without the help of the wonderful donors and the opportunity to be chosen for the grant our life would be headed in a different direction right now. So, I want to say thank you for all that everyone has done for us. You have shown us that even when you’re down, there are complete strangers that care to help. And even though my family is not quite back on track, we are getting there because of all that you do. Thank you again so very much!” Programs & Services Review Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan Counseling • Masters’ level, licensed therapists trained to assist individuals, groups and families • 8 professional therapists • 5 office locations: Cheboygan, Gaylord, Mancelona, Pellston and Petoskey • 719 unduplicated individuals served eys fe’s many journ li r fo g n li se n Cou Domestic Abuse • 135 survivors and their children stayed at the Safe Home • 3,041 total nights of safe shelter provided • 529 not-in-residence survivors assisted • 881 calls to 24-hour crisis line • 303 survivors attended support groups Taking stock a t the Safe Hom e Transitional Supportive Housing • 68 domestic abuse survivors and their children transitioned from the Safe Home into this program • 15 housing units in our 5-county service area • 16,874 total nights of housing provided Sexual Assault & Rape • 24-hour crisis line and free, immediate support to survivors at emergency rooms • 312 sexual assault victims received services • 35 sexual assault victims under the age of 12 received services • 5 WRCNM offices in four counties provided sexual assault support groups for survivors, teens and family members rs o TSH opens do Helping surviv ors move on Counseling Services: Domestic Abuse Program & Safe Home: “The fact your services exist is extraordinary. It’s like being thrown a lifeline when you feel you’re drowning. My counselor has been great letting me know it’s more than OK to be me, and I’m so grateful for that. She is a great example and a very positive role model...all of you are. Thank you for all you offer; it makes all the difference to so many people.” “I have never been shown such acceptance, support, dedication and belief until I came here. Each and every one of you have made such a great impact on me and the kids. I could never express enough how grateful I am to have had such a great experience and new start. I am so very happy to begin the next chapter in my life. Thank you for all that you do and all that you are!” Transitional Supportive Housing: “I began in the Transitional Supportive Housing program in September 2011, after leaving my abusive partner and staying at the Safe Home. While in this program, I’ve taken on two part time jobs while I look for more permanent work. I now have a car to get back and forth to work and I’m taking college classes. With the help of the WRCNM, I’ve been able to overcome many challenges and barriers and am working toward my goals.” “I came to the Safe Home with two garbage bags of possessions and my five year old daughter. I was eight months pregnant. My partner had been violent toward me throughout our relationship. My counselor/advocate helped me with safety planning and finding housing. I’ve also been going to one of their domestic abuse support groups. The WRCNM has provided me with gas cards to get to and from work as well as vouchers for clothing at the Gold Mine Resale Shop and clothes for work through their Working Wardrobe program.” “I am so very happy to begin the next chapter in my life.” We handled 881 calls to our 24-hour crisis line last year Programs & Services Review Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan Employment & Educational • $43,000 in educational scholarships provided • 112 participants enrolled in college courses • 12 program participants graduated in May ‘11 • 66 Working Wardrobe vouchers provided to those needing interview clothing or re-entering the workforce into Moving back the workforce Violence Prevention • 1096 students attended programs on healthy relationships and violence prevention • 1535 people attended community presentations on violence prevention, awareness and social change • 5 community members served on the Violence Prevention Team Primary preve ntion efforts Gold Mine Resale Shops itical nations are cr Gold Mine do • The original Gold Mine store celebrated 30 years of serving the community and helping fund WRCNM programs and services • 3334 donations received • 3682.50 volunteer hours donated • $3514 worth of Gold Mine vouchers provided to those in need • 9,000+ square feet of space welcomes customers at our new Gold Mine North location • $4,000 Great Lakes Energy People Fund grant and a $3,000 Rotary grant helped purchase new exterior signage at Gold Mine North Employment and Educational Services: “There are days I don’t have enough gas in my car to drive the kids to an activity. The car we drive has not had heat for two winters. Often we go without new clothes or shoes that fit. The money we have received from the WRCNM for school and child care has enabled me to work hard and improve my life and the lives of my children. Truly, it is the only way I can continue on this course of self improvement.” “Your help is greatly appreciated. It has changed my whole life.” “Thank you for helping cover expenses for college over the past couple of years. It was difficult being a single parent of three children while attending college full time. There was no way I could have afforded it on my own. Since graduating from nursing school last May; I’ve obtained my license as a registered nurse and have found a great job right here in northern Michigan. Your help is greatly appreciated. It has changed my whole life.” Gold Mine Resale Shops: “After participating in the Employment and Educational program and graduating from nursing school, I was hired to work as a registered nurse. I was so excited! As soon as I got hired, I eagerly went shopping for new scrub uniforms. It was so exciting for me. Unfortunately, I did not realize how much a new pair of scrubs costs. It was way out of my range. So, I went shopping at the Gold Mine Resale Shop. I found a pair of name brand scrubs that were just like new for $5. The Gold Mine has become one of my favorite stores.” Men Move into Action Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan DJ Jones, Bill Wilson and Bob Waldvogel are first to contribute to campaign 100 Men Campaign This campaign helped the WRCNM successfully engage 125 local men in the movement to end violence against women and girls. t we watch… We are wha nd buy read, hear a role in The media’s g lence amon promoting vio sexualization boys, hyperism. of girls and sex Sponsored by: ource Cente r of Northern Michigan ial showing during a spec Learn more ovie to m a — ” M ion of “Generat sion. us sc di ht and stimulate insig Women’s Res 10 1220 Men Campaign 10 URCE CENTER HIGAN WOMEN’S RESO OF NORTHERN MIC • 125 men contributed to the campaign • $13,000+ in campaign contributions • 90 community members attended film screening and panel discussion of Generation M: Misogyny in Media & Culture • 32 local coaches attended Coaching Boys into Men workshops, two coaches trained to be co-facilitators, and three key athletic directors helping to expand program • 5 local cinemas featured awareness and prevention messages on movie screens • 30+ indoor billboards provided awareness and prevention messages • 13 page-dominant newspaper ads featured campaign supporters and prevention messages • 2 local schools featured prevention messages in football programs • 1500 educational brochures distributed • Educational/awareness materials created for community presentations Coaching Boys Into Men Workshop Comments: “A concept that has needed to be addressed for a long time. Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan People , Places and Events! 28 Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan People , Places and Events! Remembering Sue Anderson We lost a friend, loyal WRCNM supporter and co-worker when Sue Anderson passed away on September 2, 2011. Sue was an integral part of the WRCNM over the past decade, yet even more so she became an inspiration to many of us at the agency as she faced cancer with grace, courage, openness and resolve. Even on challenging days and during chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Sue entered and left the office with a smile on her face and a pleasant greeting to all. We will remember Sue as a genuine, generous and fun-loving person. A wind chime has been placed in the big pine tree on the Children’s Learning Center playground in Sue’s memory. WRCNM Board of Directors This policy-setting group is made up of current donors who have a strong commitment to the agency’s mission, vision and values. Each board member is a volunteer who is interested in committing more deeply to the organization and our goals. 2010-11 Board of Directors Front from left: • Diane Rekowski • Catherine Atchison • Tracey Grose, Treasurer • Mary Rapin • Sharon Schappacher, Secretary • Jeanne Cole • Linda Widrig Neuss • Patricia Forster Back from left: • Jennifer Holem Attie • Jennifer Waldvogel • Shari Kitchen, President • Lisa Blanchard, Vice President Not pictured: • Toni Felter • Jan Martin, Secretary Meet the WRCNM Leadership Team From left: • Dena Sydow, Marketing and Communications Director • Chris Krajewski, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Program Director • Jan Mancinelli, Executive Director • Gail Kloss, Finance Director • Nicole Lindwall, Clinical Supervisor and Children’s Services Program Administrator • Deb Smith, Assistant Director 30 “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~ Confucius Take a step toward a better tomorrow. Donate Contributions are a way for you to be actively involved in the Women’s Center without having to donate time. An annual contribution entitles you to receive the bimonthly Women’s Resource Center newsletter. Endowment In order to ensure services are ongoing, permanent endowments are currently held at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation and at the Charlevoix County Community Foundation. These endowment funds are permanent funds within the foundations. Earnings from the funds may be used by the WRCNM for special projects, programming or operating dollars or reinvested back into the fund. Planned Giving We will work with you and/or your financial advisor to help you make a planned gift that meets your wishes and provides you with the tax advantages that come with giving to an IRS recognized charity. Gifts in Kind Contributions of products and services are accepted. Volunteer The volunteer job benefits are great! You’ll meet other interesting people from all walks of life, learn new skills and feel good about sharing your time and talents. Give an hour a month, 20 hours a week or anything in between. Workdays and times are flexible for all positions. NONPROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID PETOSKEY, MI PERMIT NO. 192 Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan, Inc.
