In which the President elucidates the
President, OVR PCA
details of the November 2014 General
Membership Meeting.
No doubt faithful readers of this column
will recall that at the end of the last
column, your President promised to
spell out the details of the General
Membership Meeting. So here are the
details and the agenda.
The meeting is Saturday, November
8, at Porsche of the Village from 7-9 p.m. The club will
provide (free) food sufficient to hold the older members
until breakfast and sufficient to hold the younger members
until they can get to the clubbing scene. Menu details
next issue.
Most of the evening will be an informal social event for
extended gripping and grinning with old and new friends.
Note the emphasis on ‘new’ friends. We would like to use
this as an opportunity for members not usually involved
with OVR activities to come out. This will be a free event
after all.
But we will have a modicum of business. Voting for next
year’s officers will be by paper ballot from 7-7:30. We will
also put a ballot in the Bent Pylon for you to mail in if you
cannot make the meeting. Just be prepared to put your
membership number on the ballot to forestall voting by
anyone who studied at Hizzoner the Mayor’s School of
Ballot Management.
Sometime after 7:30 the President will announce the
election winners and give a quick 5 minute “State of the
Club” presentation to review where we have been in
2014, where we plan to go in 2015 and what resources
we will develop and expend to make the 2015 program
possible.
Following the presentation the President will don an
asbestos free flame retardant suit and in the best
tradition of the British House of Commons, open the
floor for comment or question so that any and all can ask
questions such as:
Do you like this month’s cover? Patti
Godofsky took the photo with her
phone while on the Kentucky Back
Roads Tour. Thanks Patti! Pictures
like this make your newsletter more
interesting. Keep them coming.
I had the pleasure to be at the start of
the Back Roads of Kentucky Tour. It is
always gratifying to see club members
set to enjoy an event. The camaraderie was evident with many discussions happening before
the call to “mount up” went out. Then the excitement built
as people climbed in their cars and jockeyed their way out
of the parking lot. As I took pictures, I noticed everyone
had a smile. And why not; they were out on a beautiful
day playing with their Porsches with a group of like-minded
people. I wonder if the 15 1/2 year old son of a Porsche
owner enjoyed the tour. I’m guessing yes. His dad announced it was his son’s first drive in the Porsche. This
brought a round of applause from the other attendees.
After the tour group departed, I took a windows down
sunroof open cruise down Route 50 from the west side of
Cincy to Cars & Coffee. This event on Riverside Drive just
east of downtown is a Saturday morning ritual for car-lovers in Cincinnati. I’ve heard there are always a few OVR
members there with their Porsches. The wide range of
cars on this particular Saturday included a new Lamborgini
Aventador to a well used VW Bus from the 50’s. If you like
cars, you should check it out.
A new event is on the calendar: a tech session at Forgeline Wheels in Dayton. With a full calendar like the club
has, there must be an event you want to attend. If not, can
you suggest one? Contact President John Meyers or any
of the board members with any ideas you have to ...
Have fun with your Porsche this month.
How come we don’t ………..?
How much money was used for what……….?
You don’t really think that ………. is a good idea, do you?
And the most important comment:
What we really should be doing is ………… and I want to
lead the charge.
I look forward to seeing everyone in November. Did I
mention that this will be a free event for the membership?
Until then, let me know what you think.
4
Would you like to talk about your new Porsche or your old
Porsche? Do you have something to say to the club? Say
it in the Speaker’s Corner column. The subject is open as
long as it pertains to the club and/or Porsches or is of interest to the club. E-mail it to [email protected].
Hare & Hound Rally
Driver’s Ed Event
Josh Snyder - Event Chair
Dennis Okin - DE Chair
When: Saturday, August 16. Driver and navigator meeting
8:30 a.m. First car depart by 9:00 a.m. The rally should
conclude around noon.
Our region will host a Driver’s Education event this coming October 18th and 19th at the highly regarded Mid-Ohio
Sports Car Course. This fine track is less than 3 hours
from the greater Cincinnati area.
Where: Starting location - TBD. Will be announced in an
e-mail blast. Ending location – to be found by the hounds.
Registration: clubregistration.net – Registration opens
Wednesday, July 16 and will be limited to the first 20
people registered.
Cost: No entry fee
Other: Due to the nature of a hare and hound rally, a codriver is HIGHLY recommended.
If you’ve never experienced a hare and hound rally, you’re
in for a real treat. Don’t miss your chance to participate
in the only competitive rally on the OVR calendar this
year. Now, what is a hare and hound rally? The leader
of the tour is the hare. All other rally participants are the
hounds “tracking” the hare. The goal is to find the hare
by following markers along the road indicating which
direction the hare travelled.
The hare leaves the starting location and drives a
predetermined route that is unknown to the hounds. The
hounds are then released at regular intervals with only a
starting direction. They then look for markers along the
route; a marker at an intersection indicates that the path
changes. The hound must choose to turn either right or
left. A second marker will be placed along the correct
route within a quarter mile indicating that the correct path
was chosen. If there is no second marker within a quarter
mile, the hound must turn around and continue tracking in
the opposite direction. The winner of the rally is the hound
that reaches the destination with the fewest miles on their
trip counter.
Registration opens Wednesday, July 16 on
clubregistration.net and will be limited to the first 20
vehicles.
These biannual Driver’s Education courses provide drivers
with an exciting weekend activity where safety and fun are
the most important rules. If you have never driven a road
course in your Porsche or other type of vehicle, it is an
exhilarating experience. You will drive this course with one
of our many talented instructors.
First timers: There will be two classroom sessions over
the weekend which will help you understand the course,
your car and performance driving. The first driving session will be without helmets. Your instructor will drive the
first two laps at a moderate speed showing you the corner
worker’s locations, the proper driving line around the track
and a brief demonstration of your car’s braking capabilities.
Then you pull into the pits and you swap places in your car.
This is where the real fun begins. You will slowly become
more familiar with the track and your car’s performance
and handling attributes. During subsequent run sessions
on Saturday and Sunday, you will improve your driving
and knowledge of the track. You will drive a total of 8 run
sessions and at some point on Sunday your instructor will
probably allow you to solo on one of the most famous road
courses in the United States!! Please remember safety is
our number one priority and you will drive within your own
safe limits which greatly improve over the weekend.
You do not need a helmet as our region has many loaner
helmets. All you need are long sleeved shirts, closed toe
shoes and we guarantee you will go home with a huge
smile on your face.
An added bonus is the Friday night pizza party where you
will meet your instructor and the other wonderful people
who keep coming back to this event.
Still not sure? Try our Taste of the Track program which
allows you to drive the first run session only and attend a
classroom session. After driving the first session, if you
want to complete the weekend, just pay the difference of a
normal registration.
Many of your friends in the Ohio Valley Region have done
these driver education events and can tell you more. To
register go to Club Registration at the following link:..........
www.clubregistration.net/
PHOTOS NEEDED
E-mail your OVR event photos to me at
[email protected] and see them in the
Bent Pylon.
You save $50 by registering and paying for the event at
least 30 days prior to the event. If you have any other
questions please e-mail me at [email protected] . I
must warn you these Driver’s Education events become
addicting: just ask those of us who have been doing them
for years and years. It is also another great way to meet
the fabulous people of the OVR family.

Speaker’s Corner
C. Steve Nelson - Concours Chair
Rolex Series Race at Indy 2013
Editor’s note: The Tudor United Sportscar Series, formerly
called the Rolex Series, will race this year at Indianapolis
Motor Speedway on Friday, July 25. See www.imsa.com
for more information. Steve wrote this article after attending last year’s race.
I have always liked Indianapolis. I worked there at one
point. How can you not like a town where all the driveways
on street after street after street display white and black
checkered race flags? And how about Meridian Avenue
which literally runs north and south in the middle of the
state. Hard to get lost in Indiana – try cruising around in
the countryside and after you notice how the county roads
are labeled you can figure out where you are without previously knowing.
Several of you are racers so pardon me while I savor
the moment of heightened appreciation as I got into my
Porsche after the race to head for home. A different feeling. If you have not done so, go see one of these races.
Better yet, go racing.
And if you have just bought your first Porsche know that
you have more than a car.
On the 26th of July, 2013 my youngest son and I spent the
day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track and I do not
mean the oval. I mean the infield track with left AND right
turns.
As we were following our route to parking in the infield at
9 a.m. the first thing we did was drive under the track – a
cool factor to start. As we kept driving further into the
infield my son said, “You have great parking as the track
has to be right here – listen to the cars. The track has to
be right here, where is it?” As we pulled into the Porsche
Corral my son, a Ferrari nut wearing his Ferrari shirt,
pointed out to me that Porsche has a corral, Ferrari has
a stable. I said that’s nice, YOU are in my Porsche and
Dayton is 100 miles away!
The track was actually right there, that is once we parked
our chairs on top the grassy knoll at the corral, facing an S
curve coming right at us. WOW, great seats and parking
for a sharp group of Porsches. Our view let us see across
the infield to the track where cars were coming at high
speed into tight curves then coming toward us from our
right and heading directly for us in the S curve in front of
us, then left again into a very fast and very noisy straightaway. Fantastic seating, screaming, thunderous machinery with great acceleration. Listening to that demonic, fine
machinery as it roared down the straightaway was amazing. Walking on the pedestrian bridge over the track while
the beasts blasted under our feet zooming by with tremendous sound, I was in my 20’s again thinking for sure that I
was attending a Star Wars movie.
The early afternoon race was The Continental Tire Series
with cars that you and I drive – Porsches, Aston Martins,
BMWs, Mazdas, Camaros and more. It was an exhilarating race!
The roaring race? - The Rolex Series and WOW:
Porsches, Audi R8s, and prototypes racing at 5:30 p.m. to
8 with lights on.

New 2014 Series
www.IMSA.com
On March 14, 2013 United SportsCar Racing was unveiled
as the new premier United States sportscar racing series
beginning in 2014. The name was chosen as a result of the
specific meaning each word has. United is powerful and
universally recognized for its true meanings: unity, collaboration and synergy. In the short term it represents the uniting of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the
American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
However, long term it represents the uniting of fans, partners, teams, drivers and sportscar racing as a whole. The
words SportsCar and Racing were chosen because they
are descriptive words that allow existing and potential fans
to easily understand the series. United SportsCar Racing
also unveiled a new logo – a modern interpretation of a
helmet. The design of the helmet logo combines signature
elements of tracks on which the series competes. The
sweeping middle section represents a road while the upper
portion represents tracks such as Daytona International
Speedway, a combined oval and infield road course or
“roval.” The lower portion represents the road and street
courses the series will race on such as Sebring International Raceway and Road Atlanta.
In 2014, IMSA will sanction United SportsCar Racing, Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, Cooper Tire Prototype
Lites, IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada, Ferrari Challenge and Lamborghini Super
Trofeo.
Hear the Roar
P2O July 25-27
Dennis Okin - OVR Member
p2o.morpca.org
P2O IS IN GRANVILLE, OH. ON JULY 25-27, 2014
What if you could not hear the roar?
I have been fortunate to be able to drive my ‘97 911 993
on Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course for a number of years.
Since I only have 282 horsepower I am passed numerous
times on the back straight by cars with 350….400 …500
and sometimes 600 hp. As they roar by the vibration from
their engines shakes my car and my ears……What if I
could not hear those roars as they passed? What if you
could not hear the everyday sounds that are essential for
a normal life as well as make life interesting and vivid?
The lack of hearing and its effects are devastating on
children and is the sole purpose of Ohio Valley Voices.
Their motto is: Helping deaf children speak. Ohio Valley
Voices (OVV) has both Family Programs and Academic
Programs having the sole purpose of helping children.
OVV is an early intervention program that teaches
children with hearing loss to listen and talk through the
use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Their mission
is to provide every child in their program with a languageenriched environment and the tools to talk so they can
have the brightest possible future.
One of the annual fund-raisers for Ohio Valley Voices
is the Hear The Roar / OVV 500 held at Motorsports
Country Club in Batavia. This year the event is scheduled
for Friday, September 12th. Ohio Valley Voices is lining
up drivers for the fourth annual OVV 500 which benefits
children with hearing loss in Greater Cincinnati who
attend their programs. Teams of 3-4 drivers compete in
races on a professionally designed track in European
karts, traveling at speeds up to 45 mph. These Enduro
style races will ensure plenty of seat time for ALL drivers.
So get a team together and help a child “hear the
roar.” Join us on Friday, September 12th at Cincinnati
Motorsports Country Club for a day filled with fast karts
and fabulous prizes, including an entry for OVR’s Annual
Autumn Thunder Driver’s Education at Mid-Ohio. Prizes
will be awarded at the post-race party and participants
also enjoy lunch and an exclusive silent auction and
raffle.
For information on sponsoring a team for this great event
or driving as an individual (individual entrants will be
placed on a team) please contact Dennis Okin at 513300-5076 or [email protected].
Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause of the
Hear the Roar / OVV 500. Thank you!
Hosted by the Mid-Ohio Region of the Porsche Club of
America, P2O is simply a casual, Porsche party giving
attendees the opportunity to hang out in a great little
uptown area with a bunch of other Porsche enthusiasts.
With its convenient location and great amenities, this
offers the Porsche lover a great opportunity to visit
with old friends while making new ones too. This is the
perfect place for a car event with Granville’s wide streets,
sidewalks, and a great infrastructure; this experience will
provide a small-town atmosphere with all the amenities of
a big city.
Friday is our casual party in Granville. The party at
the Buxton Inn can be both indoors and outdoors, so
if the weather is wet we can go inside. Saturday is our
signature event where attendees show off their cars and
cast their ballots in the Peoples Choice car show with
awards to approximately the top 10% of registered cars.
Sunday has an organized drive and a Polo Match/Car
Show for all makes.
P2O is the brainchild of MORPCA members Bill and
Marylynn Roe. In 2003 and 2004, the event was
known as Porsches 2 Pinckney (Michigan). After the
only restaurant in Pinckney closed, volunteers began
looking for a new location for a 2005 event. Oxford, a
college town in western Ohio, was chosen after months
of searching throughout the tri-state area for a perfect
venue with the infrastructure and charm to be a home
for seven years. On Saturday July 30, 2005, MORPCA
hosted the first annual P2O event in Oxford. Marketed
as a casual Porsche party, P-cars of all ages and models
began arriving days before the event — from as far away
as Ontario and Maine. With 140 Porsches adorning the
brick streets of the quaint, uptown area, it was obvious
that MORPCA had picked the perfect site for a Porsche
event. Traffic was prohibited in the downtown area from
6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. providing a great location to display
the cars. With an adjacent bandstand serving as event
headquarters, this was a unique site that was just perfect
for a casual Porsche party unlike any other. Attendees
were able to enjoy a variety of shops, restaurants, and
watering holes all within easy walking distance of their
cars and their friends. Before it was all over, 14 different
PCA regions and eight states were well represented at
the show.
Starting in 2012, the event moved to Granville as
an upgrade from the previous venue, offering more
accommodations in a fresh location.

Drei Staaten Gruppe Picnic
Stan Yarrish - OVR Member
Photos by Stan Yarrish
The Annual Drei Staaten Gruppe 356 Car Club Bull
Session and Family Picnic was held on May 19th, in
Sharon Woods Park, on its traditional date of the Sunday
after Mother’s Day. A beautiful day brought out almost 20
356’s and a few other 911 variants. Even a few interesting
non P–cars showed up including an original Mini Cooper,
a mid 60’s Corvette, and a late 60’s Camaro.
After a great lunch the crowd filtered among the cars to
catch up on the long winter of discontent, and to share
plans for the summer driving and show season. New
this year was a People’s Choice balloting for some killer
Porsche AG club trophies. For a complete rundown of
the winners see the write-up on the DSG website, www.
dreistaatengruppe.com. Also on the website you can see
a full gallery of photos from the event.
A repeat of the ever popular Porsche Trivia and
Knowledge Quiz was also part of the festivities. A tough
15 question multiple choice quiz did not produce a single
perfect score, so prizes were awarded in decreasing
order of the correct number of answers. Some great shirts
and other apparel from Stoddard’s and Porsche of the
Village were the prizes everyone was competing for.
We also ran a mini swap meet for anyone who had
Porsche parts that needed a good home. There were only
a few offerings this year. Perhaps everyone is keeping
their parts for their next Porsche project?
Join us again next year at perhaps the same location. All
Porsche car owners and interested parties are welcome
to join in the picnic and fun!

Germania Maifest Car Show Results
C. Steve Nelson - Event Chair Photos by Wade Huston.
This year we launched a new show which was held with
Germania Society’s Maifest at Germania Park. We had
38 cars in attendance with a really great mix of 911s, 928s,
914s, 912s, 944s, Boxsters, and Caymans.
Everyone had a good time in spite of the monsoons that
had occurred daily for the week and a half leading up to
the event. This was a direct hit on attendance since all car
show parking was only allowed on the grassy area. The
area we used was well-drained and that worked out nicely.
Maifest attendees were impressed with the good looking
Porsches at their event.
Recipients of the 15 People’s Choice awards were pleased
and a few new members now realize that yes, their car is
good to show. Winners were: First Place - Brad Shisler,
914; Second Place - Art Lee, GT2RS; Third Place - Don
Shaw, ‘84 911 Cab. Awards were presented in placing
order to winners: Jerry Jackowski, Mac McGregor, Mart
Reyes, Roger Millar, Don Gamble, Stan Thomkos, Mike
Piposar, Bob Cox, Joe Fee, Patti Godofsky and Jim Hopgood.

Thanks to Sven Menninger of the Germania Society for
his help in coordinating our efforts for having OVR at the
Maifest. See you next year.

Around the Zone
·
Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,
Michael Soriano
Zone 4 Representative
The 3rd Zone Event of the year was held
the last weekend in May; the Porscheplatz at Belle Isle. With only 27 days’
notice, I had to reschedule all of my
planned region visits and spent much
of the month of May focusing on planning and organizing this event. Each
and every region did a fantastic job to
help promote this event, which I am
pleased to announce was extremely successful. In fact,
ticket sales for Saturday surpassed the track’s expectations, and we had to request an additional allocation of
tickets. The event was attended by members from at least
10 of the 12 regions within the zone, and it was great to be
able to spend some time getting to meet a number of you.
The weather was absolutely perfect to enjoy a number of
races at scenic Belle Isle including a TUDOR race, a Pirelli
World Cup Challenge race, a Super Trucks race, and 2
Indy races. Over 150 PCA members and Porsche owners enjoyed the exclusive trackside accommodations and
were treated to meet and greets with Leh Keen of Alex Job
Racing as well as Magnus Racing’s Andy Lally and John
Potter. There was also a presentation by Roger Hood from
Mobil 1 Racing. Over the course of the weekend a number
of raffles took place, and attendees had the opportunity
to win a Hot Pit Tour, in which the winners actually visited
the pit during the TUDOR race; a Hot Lap Experience
where the winners accompanied a professional driver as
he drove the track at speed. After an exciting and fun-filled
day, one lucky attendee won a new set of Michelin tires.
With this being the first Porscheplatz in the area in a number of years, there was concern about how well it would be
received. While acquiring one of these events involves a
great deal of persistence and lobbying, keeping high profile
national events such as these depends on how well the
events are supported and on your participation. I want to
thank everyone in Zone 4 for working together and laying
the groundwork for the future.
For those of you who enjoy participating in car corrals and
watching races, July provides you with a number of opportunities; these include the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix,
and the 2nd Porscheplatz in our zone at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. In addition, don’t forget about P2O in
Granville and the 36th Annual Concours d’Elegance of
America at St. John’s in Plymouth, MI.
Please continue to read your region’s newsletter and check
the region websites and e-blasts for the most up to date list
of events available to you both in your region and throughout the zone. Consider attending:
