It is the legend, the myth of reproduction and power, of man and woman. Zineb, the main character of the story, is 40 years old. She is the symbol of an entire generation that dreams of immediate change. The young girl, Rihana, however, is a character on the margin of society. This society with all of its contradictions reveals its true self amongst its minorities and those marginalized. This young girl tries to give a sense to a world that overtakes her but her excessive imagination and her sensibility leads her down the wrong path. The goal of this movie was to experiment with a new form of narrative in Moroccan cinema, and to try new aesthetic and symbolic methods all while trying to respect the visual dimension. This film is an unprecedented turn for this rare form of film narration in Moroccan cinema, what is the fantastical and how to approach this to reality. Poetry is also intertwined in the narration without sacrificing the voice of social criticism. The narration is not linear, jumping from the present to the past, from dreams to reality. It represents the timelessness of the subconscious, in which this young girl is victim as a result of her ignorance. In cinema, subjects are often handled on a thematic, aesthetic, dramatic and symbolic scheme. This is not a coincidence; it is the essence of art that renders it eternal. KANT would say that art is not the representation of what is beautiful, but the representation of one thing. A similar quote by ANDRE GIDE echoes this sentiment “May beauty be seen in your look and not in the object that is being looked at” (“Que la beauté soit dans ton regard et non dans l’objet regardé”) “The fantastic is the hesitation experienced by a being who knows only the laws of nature, facing a seemingly supernatural event.” (“Le fantastique est l’hésitation qu’éprouve un être réel face à un phénomène d’apparence surnaturelle.”)-TODOROV Mohamed MOUFTAKIR www.pegase-lefilm.com Copyright © 2010 DREAMAKER PRODUCTIONS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 3 4 Synopsis Rihana is a young girl in her twenties, born and raised in the countryside. Rihana, victim of a traumatic experience, finds herself in a psychiatric hospital. She is convinced to have been impregnated by a young man from her village called Zayd. Rihana also believes her pregnancy is blessed by the “Lord of the Horse,” a veneered spirit in the superstitious tradition and fairytale accounts of her father. Zineb, the psychiatrist handling Rihana’s case, is tasked with the mission of understanding and unraveling the mystery behind Rihana’s behavior. Her job is further complicated by Rihana’s uncooperative attitude, she cannot conclude if the young girl is lying, making up stories, or if she is consumed by the imaginary world in which she has taken refuge. Zineb remains pressed to unravel the truth and to uncover this girl’s painful past. In her quest to discover more facts about Rihana, Zineb finds herself embroiled in a situation that spirals out of control. www.pegase-lefilm.com Copyright © 2010 DREAMAKER PRODUCTIONS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 5 6 Principal Cast Majdouline DRISSI Majdouline DRISSI is an up & coming actress in Morocco, having won her first Prize as leading actress in “Pegasus” for her role as Rihana at the Tangier National Film Festival.
