GED Information Sheet Kentucky A Guide to Obtaining Your GED GED - What is it? The GED, or General Educational Development test, provide adults who did not complete a formal high school program the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills. The GED Test is comprised of five content area assessments: • Language Arts, Reading • Language Arts, Writing • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies Get Your GED in 6 Easy Steps! 1. Meet the requirements. In Kentucky, the GED can be administered to any Kentucky resident who is certified as “test ready” and who meets one of the following criteria: • Has a Kentucky address and is 19 years of age; or: • Has a Kentucky address, is 16 years of age and has been officially withdrawn from public or private school for 90 days as certified by the local school district or is officially withdrawn from public or private school and receives a superintendent’s waiver of the 90 days for a postsecondary enrollment deadline on account of a condition of employment, medical reason or family circumstances * You must present proof of official withdrawal from school on school form or school letterhead at time of testing 2. Complete the Pre-Test registration process. Kentucky requires that applicants must complete the KYAE 6—GED Testing Application form and take the GED Steck-Vaughn Official Practice Test administered by a Kentucky adult education center before officially registering to take the test. Residents of Kentucky can take advantage of the state's free GED preparation classes available at Adult Education Centers statewide, online via Kentucky Virtual Adult Education, or through Kentucky Educational Television's GED Connection program. The Kentucky Virtual Adult Education Program: Topics of study include reading and writing, science, math and social studies. Internet and email access is required. Enroll by calling 800.928.7323 or by visiting www.kyae.ky.gov for the center nearest you. To take online classes through Kentucky Virtual Adult Education (KYVAE), you must be at least 16 years old, not be enrolled in high school and either live or work in Kentucky. After you register online, your county’s adult education center will contact you. The KET GED Connection Program: Study at home by watching 39, 30-minute television programs. Students must also complete GED workbook lessons and take a pre-test assessment to determine which areas you need the most help. Tutoring, phone, mail, internet and television support services are available to all GED Connection students. Enroll by calling 800.538.4433. 5. Prepare Your ID & Pay the Fee. On the date of the test, you will need to show current, governmentissued ID, such as a driver’s license or state identification card. Fees range from $60.00 to $85.00 and will vary depending on the testing center. Contact a local GED testing center for current fees. 6. Take the test. Your results should arrive in the mail from the GED® office approximately 15 working days from the day you test. If you do not have your results within this time period, please contact the testing center. To pass the GED, you must earn a minimum total standard score of 2250 on all 5 tests and a minimum standard score of 410 in each subject area.
