2016 Summer Arts Camp Class Schedule by Time 9:00-10:15 Native Gourd Art Ages 10 to 14 Limit 15 Learn about gourd history, growing, and crafting with Pamunkey Indian Artist Ethan Brown. Paint or craft a gourd of your own. Teacher: Ethan Brown is a self taught artist, who lives and sells artwork on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. He has shown artwork at Art6 Gallery in Richmond and Gallery on the Hill in Yorktown, as well as created numerous pieces on commission. He has taught art workshops for Henrico and King William schools, as well as a Native Gourd Art Program at the West Point Library. He is currently creating art pieces for an educational program with the National Park Service for the Chesapeake Bay, John Smith Water Trail. Beginner Mosaics Ages K to 9 Limit 15 Welcome to the beautiful world of mosaics. Students will learn how to safely apply tile and decorative shapes, in various ways, to a clay pot and a birdhouse. They will also learn to grout their artwork when the pattern is complete. Teacher: Tina Crawford, self taught mosaic artist and acrylic painter. Taught art classes at Walnut Hills Baptist Church for 1 ½ years. Also taught several adult acrylic painting classes and mural painting. Whimsical Critters Ages completed K to 9 Limit 15 Whether a fun doorstop for the home or a crazy critter for the yard, students will design and paint their one-of-a-kind paving brick. Teacher: Sue Kurfees, retired visual arts teacher with 42 years of experience in K-12 for the Town of West Point and currently a teacher for Arts Alive Visual Arts Workshops. Zoomorphic Paper Mache Masks Age completed K-9 Limit 15 Explore your wild side! Learn about and be inspired by masks from around the world. Choose your spirit animal and create your unique zoomorphic paper mache mask. Campers choice of texture and design will complete their animal transformation. Teacher: Amy McElroy studied art Education at ODU and has nine years teaching experience and is a PK-12 licensed art teacher at Cool Spring Primary School. Beautiful Peacocks on Canvas Ages 10 to 14 Limit 15 Participants will create a series of canvas paintings featuring peacocks and their gorgeous teal, blue, gold, green and purple feathers. Teacher: Tina Oberg, art teacher at Hamilton-Holmes Middle School, has a degree in fine art from VCU, 20 years teaching experience and a three-time "Teacher of the Year" recipient. 1 Let’s Face It Picasso Ages completed K to 9 Limit 15 Pablo Picasso was an extraordinary artist and his work is honored to this day. We are going to spend the week collaging, painting, monotyping and creating faces. Lots of faces just as he did for over 75 years! This is fun and you will use many materials like gel medium, paint, tissue paper, glue, water, fabric, paper plates, cardboard, gelli plates and even a few things not exactly “art” stuff like joint compound! Leave with great faces and more ideas to do on your own. Teacher: Susan Musselman has been teaching art for 38 years and cannot imagine doing anything else. She has a Master’s Degree from VCU and currently is the Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair at New Kent High School. Ukulele Ages 8 to 14 Limit 10 Ukulele for beginners. Learn basic chords and strums and sing along to your favorite songs. Ukulele provided or bring your own. th Teacher: Iris Redmond, licensed in Virginia to teach music K through 12 grade, music teacher at West Point Elementary School for 10 years. Beginning Piano Keyboarding Ages completed K to 9 Limit 10 Campers will learn the basics of playing a keyboard with fingering techniques, scales, reading music and performing simple songs. Campers should have little or no prior experience on a keyboard or piano for this class. Teacher: Kristi Reynolds has a Master of Music in Piano Performance from HardinSimmons University. She is Artistic Director of the Middle Peninsula Chorale, is organist/choirmaster at St. Paul's Miller's Tavern, and is a private piano teacher and accompanist. Basic Acting Age 10 to 14 Limit 15 Want to learn the basics of acting? Come to Basic acting where you’ll learn how to move on stage, be heard, and express yourself! Teacher: Moriah Hancock is majoring in theatre performance at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has directed two shows and performed in numerous productions at New Kent High School, Astor College and VCU and is currently working on having her play produced with TheatreLAB. Disney Ballet Ages completed K to 9 Limit 12 Learn the art of ballet while dancing to your favorite Disney songs. Become fairies and princesses in this fun class. A big imagination is encouraged! Teacher: Linda A. Coffield, dance teacher for 30 years, Artistic Director/owner of Linda’s School of Dance in West Point, New Kent, Lancaster, and Middlesex counties. Step Dance Ages 10-14 Limit 12 Learn fun rhythmic patterns using your hands and feet, to upbeat music, chants etc. Footwork is the most important part of this style of movement. Campers should wear shoes with a solid sole or boots (no soft shoes or barefeet). Teacher: Ja'Nae Washington received her B.F.A.in dance at Radford University, Teacher at Linda’s School of Dance, professional choreographer, studied and trained with Urban Dance League and Broadway Dance Center in NYC, performed with Urban Dance League on BET’s 106 & Park. 2 Beginner/Advanced Beginner Gymnastics Ages completed K to 9 Limit 8 Gymnastic classes are designed to encourage progress while improving flexibility, strength and self-confidence. This class is designed for students new to gymnastics and still mastering basic skills such as forward & backward rolls, cartwheel, bridge, various jumping positions, handstand, etc. Teacher: Janice Collins, owner of the Northern Neck Athletic Center, is a Professional Member of the United States Gymnastics Federation. She has obtained the Advanced International Coach and Instructor credentials and is also a National/International Level Judge along with Skill Evaluator. Reader’s Theater for Young Readers Ages completed K to 12 Limit 8 Using scripts and folk tales from all over the world, campers will practice “read aloud” literature each day that develops vocal expression and interpretation while promoting reading skills in a fun way. Campers will work on their characters while using a cooperative, “team sport” approach to theatrical presentation. All campers will have parts to read and all reading levels will be utilized. Teacher: In addition to being part of Arts Alive since its foundation, Tim Dice has th worked recently as a Reading and Language Arts Tutor with York County Schools (K-5 ) as well as a private tutor. He has directed stage shows, art camps and has a lot of experience as a Stage Manager and performer. He holds a B.A. in English (Chapman University) and a Master of Divinity Degree from TCU, Ft. Pop Art Self Portraits Ages 10 to 14 Limit 15 Are you a Warhol or a Lichtenstein? Technical facial drawing with a pop of color. Campers will study pop art portraits and decide how they see themselves. Campers choice of medium such as marker, colored pencil, water colors and more will allow them to create their own style. Teacher: Amy McElroy studied art Education at ODU and has nine years teaching experience and is a PK-12 licensed art teacher at Cool Spring Primary School. Wooden Tropical Fish Wall Art Ages 10 to 14 Limit 15 Campers will create a large, stylized fish using wood (which will be cut by the instructor). Colorful paint, glitter paint, and puff paint will be used to decorate and give texture. Teacher: Tina Oberg, art teacher at Hamilton-Holmes Middle School, has a degree in fine art from VCU, 20 years teaching experience and a three-time "Teacher of the Year" recipient. 4 Painting 101 Ages: Completed Kindergarten to 9 Limit 15 Painting is great fun. We’ll use real easels, brushes, (YES! we will provide smocks). During the week, we will spend time learning in a fun way about colors, mixing paint and how to create wonderful artwork that you are sure to want to frame and hang! Teacher: Susan Musselman has been teaching art for 38 years and cannot imagine doing anything else. She has a Master’s Degree from VCU and currently is the Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair at New Kent High School. Drumming Ages completed K to age 9 Limit 15 This class will incorporate drums and percussion instruments. Campers will play musical games, learn rhythm patterns, and songs for performance. th Teacher: Iris Redmond, licensed in Virginia to teach music K through 12 grade, music teacher at West Point Elementary School for 10 years. Beginning Guitar Ages 8 to 14 Limit 8 Campers will learn the beginning basics to acoustic guitar playing. Basic group instruction will include posture, tuning, strumming patterns, and chord and melodic playing. Bring your own guitar if you have one; some smaller guitars will be available for younger students. Teacher: Kristi Reynolds has a Master of Music in Piano Performance from HardinSimmons University. Contemporary/Lyrical: Ages 10-14 Limit 12 Combination of jazz and ballet techniques, using literal representation of the music to inspire and express emotions or feelings. Come dance with me to Top hits like Adele and Sam Smith. Intermediate/Advanced Gymnastics Ages 9 to 14 Limit 10 This class is more challenging for those who have mastered basic skills and are ready for more advanced skills such as power hurdles, round-off, bridge kick-over, limbers, handsprings, walkovers, etc. Teacher: Janice Collins, owner of the Northern Neck Athletic Center, is a Professional Member of the United States Gymnastics Federation. Printmaking Ages K to 9 Limit 15 One animal to rule them all! Campers will be challenged to create their own, unique animal ruler after reading "Lord of the Animals" by Fiona French. They will learn two printmaking processes and create a series of prints. Imagination and creativity will be our guides on this adventure. Koinobori (Fish) Fabric Windsocks Ages 10 to 14 Limit 15 Participants will design a carp-shaped windsock known as "Koinobori" using colorful outdoorsafe fabric. A "scale" shaped printing block will be carved and applied using ink, in order to create a repetitive scale design on the body. Details like eyes, fins, and a tail will be enhanced using metallic, puff, and glitter paint. A Week of Games Ages: Completed Kindergarten to 9 Limit 15 Games are fun! Games you toss things in, games you have to remember things, games you need skill or games that are just weird. Some games you need a partner! Some games you can play alone! We will cut, paste, draw, glue, tie, paint on paper, cardboard, sticks and plates. Become a “Gamer”. No electronics needed! Campers will be using recyclable materials to decorate and fill the pages of their books. They will learn a few basic drawing and painting techniques and take away new ideas for continuing their books after the week is over. Teacher: Sierra Adkins is a theatre major at James Madison University and has participated in theatre most of her high school years. This will be her fourth year volunteering with Arts Alive. Instead of wet, messy adhesive, this process uses paper packing tape to create paper mâché quality. The surface will be decorated with words and/or images that have personal significances. Explore color and style while learning new tie dye techniques such as folding, banding, twisting, ombré, tritx (stitching and gathering) and non-wax color resist. Bring your own white or light colored fabric/clothing or choose from a selection at camp. Mask Making Ages: Completed K to 9 Limit 15 Masks are one of the most creative and versatile ways to express yourself. Short stories and poems will be read to inspire you to make a unique mask. We start by listening to a few short episodes, choose one we like, choose a character you like and then start creating what you see in your head. Each person will see something different. You will use common materials to make a mask the shape you like. Maybe, we can perform the story at the end of the week! They will use fruits, vegetables, other natural products, as well as recyclable materials, while they invent their own fascinating patterns. Besides printmaking, the campers will learn how to marble paper which can be used as a background for some of their creations.
